I forgot to mention one more thing. The spirit cats tell River Ripple that he "connected" them to their ancestors, that he was the mountain cats' connection to the dead cats.
I guess it's easier to quote from the book. Tall Shadow mentions that Stoneteller connected with their ancestors in the mountains, and River Ripple replies:
"Perhaps you never needed to," River Ripple mewed. It seemed without Stoneteller to speak on their ancestors' behalf, the dead had been forced to intervene directly. It had been the only way to stop these cats from destroying themselves. And he'd been their way in."
I don't really understand. During the first battle, the ghost cats wake River Ripple up and he goes to the four trees and watches them fight. I think you guys can discuss that as you want, but it doesn't really make sense to me. I'm happy to elaborate if necessary.

Does Spider Paw join RiverClan before or after the Park mission? That will help us piece together the timeline. Before.

What about Pine Needle? He and Drizzle are littermates. Also, weren't Pine and Drizzle kits around the same time as Snow Tail, Trout Fur and Willow Stream? They were all kits in leaf-bare together and MFV implied that Drizzle and Pine Needle were still kits in newleaf when Moth Flight and Micah visit RC in that book. Drizzle couldn't swim there either. Pine Needle doesn't really do much in this book. He's not mentioned that often, I think other than the mention of him playing with Drizzle, Drizzle just mentions she told him where she was going. No, I was wondering if he was mentioned to be a warrior alongside Drizzle or no. Side note, do we ever find out who mentored these two?

Does Spider Paw join RiverClan before or after the Park mission? That will help us piece together the timeline. Before. Did the whole ending take place in greenleaf? If Finch was pregnant at the end of greenleaf, then the book should've ended in leaf-fall for the kits to have been born. Riverstar got his nine lives in greenleaf and Spider Paw joined in greenleaf.

So the timeline appears to be: MFV- newleaf? to leaf-fall. Leaders get nine lives in greenleaf. Spider Paw joins RiverClan in leaf-fall. Riverstar leaves soon after? Lingers at Park for two moons- late leaf-fall/early leafbare? RiverxFinch kits born late leafbare/early newleaf? Then the SkyRiver battle is soon after? So that would mean RH ends around the same time TE happens. Thunder's kits and River's kits are roughly the same age then. I smell a fanfic.

I’m trying to mostly avoid spoilers, but the main thing I want to know: is it a retread of DotC/Moth Flight’s Vision, or does it move that era along a little further?

Yes, Pine Needle is made a warrior alongside Drizzle. Dew mentors Drizzle and Mist mentors Pine Needle, but this is before the mentor/apprentice system is officially introduced.

Most of it is a DOTC/MFV rehash, but it moves it a long a bit further. Not as much as Thunderstar's or Shadowstar's novella, I would say, though.

According to the wiki he joins on page 464 of MFV, while the events timeline has leaf-fall at page 472. Though it could've been directly on the borderline of greenleaf and leaf-fall, since it's pretty close together.

I don't feel like reading 3 pages of spoiler thread can someone give me a summary of whats happened up to this point -The first half of the book is basically a DOTC rehash, other than what we've seen on the preview on the site. After River Ripple is beaten by Hawk, he becomes a kittypet. Then the Twolegs get a dog and River Ripple escapes. There, he meets Night and establishes a loose coalition of rogues. Not like the camps the mountain cats have, just a place where they chill. They're not required to stay. Fast forward DOTC, then MFV, then Riverstar has his nine lives. After that, Arc comes to the camp and tells him that Slash is bothering the Park cats. River Ripple goes to help him defeat Slash, Drizzle tags along. Riverstar loses a life saving Drizzle. They go to the Park where they defeat Slash. Riverstar loses a life during this. In the meantime, Riverstar falls in love with a cat named Finch. He dallies along and doesn't want to leave until Drizzle nearly drowns trying to leave without him. Riverstar realizes he has to go. Finch originally doesn't want to go with them, but changes her mind. They ride a makeshift raft down the river back towards RiverClan, where they come across a patrol. They go back to RiverClan, where Night was ready to go to the Moonstone to get her nine lives. Skystar has been hunting on their territory - while Riverstar was gone, a storm knocked a tree into RiverClan territory from SkyClan territory, so Skystar was using the tree to hunt. He says that "StarClan wanted him to." Riverstar organizes a system of mentor/apprentices and asks for help at the Gathering from the other Clans, none of them are too keen on helping Riverstar fight. So Riverstar fights alone. His mate, Finch, has three kits - Arc Shadow, Ripple Shine, and Dusk Smoke. After that, they fight against Skystar and they win, pushing the tree away in the river.
That's... basically it. Thanks for the quick summary! As for the second half, yeah, even the new stuff seems underwhelming after seeing it all laid out like this. Poor Riverstar though, I will give him that. Though this does make wonder, what's the last paragraph of the book anyway?

I feel like the last season that's mentioned in text is leaf-fall. I just rechecked the book, and the river doesn't freeze over by the time the battle with Skystar happens. It might still be before leaf-bare, and it's raining a lot. The kits are born in late leaf-fall, and by the time the battle preparations start, Riverstar mentions their kits are only four days old. There's a small gap between Riverstar's confrontation with Skystar and the battle, but the book doesn't elaborate how long it's been. It's really just a break in the page that lets us know there's a gap in time.
One weird thing to mention. At the Gathering when Riverstar returns, Jagged Peak mentions "there are more squirrels in the pines than we've ever dreamed of." I have no idea if he returned to ShadowClan agian, or if that's a mistake on Kate's part.

The last paragraphs of the book end with Riverstar reflecting on his friendship with Night and his connection with the river, but the very very last paragraph is: "Riverstar's heart ached with happiness. He lifted his tail, his gaze sweeping the far shore as dawn broke over the forest. A flash of sunlight sliced through the clouds and glittered on the surface of the river. Back at camp, his kits would be waiting for him with Finch. "Come on," he mewed. "It's time to go home."
This is right after they win the battle against SkyClan.

Actually, does anyone remember this scene from MFV? At one point in newleaf Dappled Pelt mentions that River Ripple is really good with kits and that she was surprised he didn't have any of his own. Well, there you go Dappled Pelt. You should've just waited a couple seasons.

Just saying, I actually like that Night isn't the one to become Riverstar's mate. Straight males and females can be just friends without needing to get into a relationship. It's nice to have a close, strictly platonic male-female friendship in Warriors, as there aren't many I can think of that are very close.

This series (and media in general) really needs to showcase more platonic relationships, but in this specific case, while I'm glad he and Night have such a strong friendship, if Riverstar had to get a mate at all, why have him get together someone who only gets introduced in the last few chapters of the book? It doesn't help that Finch's backstory is basically just a repeat of Night's anyway.

My problem isn't that Riverstar didn't get with Night, it's that the cat he got with seems to have an extremely similar backstory to her. It's just super weird writing in that regard.
As already said too, it just seemed to be really rushed with her being introduced not too far off from the end of the book.

It'd be one thing if Finch had been introduced sooner and she had actually been a part of RiverClan early-on, but to not only have her appear so late—therefore rushing her relationship with Riverstar in the process—but giving her a similar backstory to Night as well? Well, in that case, he might as well have ended up with Night! Finch even looks similar to her (black cat, whereas Night is black-and-white). It just feels so unnecessary.

So, I guess like some I feel a bit let down? We waited forever for this book and maybe I hyped it up too much because Riverstar is everyone’s fluffy good boy, but from I’ve read from both threads im very underwhelmed. In DOTC Riverstar is shown to be already in the forest territories fully swimming and fishing, however from what I’ve gathered from the spoilers he’s only lived by the river for a few seasons and is still learning when the tribe cats arrive? To add on the whole Riverstar having a mate and kits wagon: I shipped him with Night in DOTC solely because she literally taught him to fish and swim but she was the only other river cat. Going into this book, I was okay with him not even getting a mate or kits- not every character needs that. But why create a cat at the very end who not only looks but acts like Night and make her his mate? Again, not every cat needs love but there was a lot of potential and story behind Night and River. I also love how she was ready to go to the Moonstone to become leader after waiting for Riverstar. She was ready to lead to Clan she originally was hesitant about forming. I just love her.

I wonder if the recent battle was why things were so tense between RiverClan and ThunderClan over that leafbare.

Alongside that, it had the idea that River Ripple always wanted to be in a group with other cats, that he wanted a sense of belonging and wanted to live like the forest cats, when in DOTC it seemed he was happy just chilling on his own.

I just read the spoilers and honestly this book sounds so unnecessary and boring. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of Riverstar to begin with but you need to get through half the book to get any original content...? Might just be me but I don't really want rehashes of events we already knew happened. Even the new stuff sounds exceptionally underwhelming. And no comic? What's going on over at WP??
Skystar sounds like an ass as per usual and he hasn't changed. I get you need an antagonist, but this guy constantly flip flops between a potential redemption and just being unnecessarily antagonistic and cruel. Also not a fan of Night not being paired with Riverstar (like if they had to give him a love interest, why not Night?? She's RIGHT there!), but I still like their friendship regardless. And then more female characters getting shafted for male pain/development? I guess it's keeping in theme with DotC but god. At least they remembered that it was Riverstar who created the more formal mentor/apprentice system.
Perhaps I need to read the book myself and I'm being too critical here, but this sounds like a waste.
