Also, Skystar gives off massive Ashfur in Bramblestar's body vibes. I mentioned that a tree fell in RiverClan's territory while Riverstar was away - Skystar says that's StarClan's sign that he's allowed to hunt in their land, and he mentions that "SkyClan will always follow StarClan." Basically, he uses StarClan to justify his reasons for invadign RiverClan territory. The thing is, I love these types of villains. I just don't like that they're once again making Skystar an antagonist. This is just ridiculous! I'm not even mad either, just incredibly annoyed. But if another leader had to be an antagonist, then the least they could've done is change things up a bit. ThunderClan and RiverClan even have a huge rivalry over a bunch of rocks in the future, so why not foreshadow that and do something with Thunder instead?

ThunderClan and RiverClan even have a huge rivalry over a bunch of rocks in the future, so why not foreshadow that and do something with Thunder instead? My initial thought was that they were setting ThunderClan up to be the villain. When Riverstar sees Arc, he scents ThunderClan and is suspicious. Lightning Tail brings Arc to camp in the beaten and battered state, and Riverstar accuses Lightning Tail of hurting him, but Lightning Tail replies, "we're not foxes," so automatically the blame goes to Skystar. (Which, I mean, Skystar DID do it, but that's besides the point). Skystar, this time, didn't do it because of his kits, like he did in MFV. He just did it because... um... StarClan. That was literally his reasoning.

QUESTIONS Does Arc die or join RC? Does Riverstar lose lives? Any new non-RiverClan cats? How exactly does the mentor/apprentice proposal happen? Any inklings of developing Clan culture (decorations etc)? Also for the mall scene, very interesting since its the 1920s canonically (hence the Model Ts) Edit: Nevermind, those were invented in the 1800s, this is very possible with albeit older models of the machines

hot take i guess but im not surprised about skystar. hes always been a tyrant who abused his own clan, caused the death of one of his kids, and generally treated everybody including his son like utter shit. he was never “redeemed” in any way, they just had the narrative bend over backwards to go “oh but its everybodys fault🥺” and made excuses for everything clear sky did while he kept being a despot. his own clanmates are afraid of him and his stubborn bullshit caused his son a slow, painful death. hes trash, always has been, always will be. moments that stand out are publicly humiliating i believe falling feather by encouraging his clanmates to abuse her as punishment for being nice to thunder, and rubbing thunders face in frosts infected, weeping wound and telling him to lick it clean. maybed ill do a full breakdown some day? if theres interest?

I'll answer more questions if anyone has them tomorrow, but for the last thing, I'll leave you guys with Riverstar's nine lives ceremony.
Life 1: Clarity and perspective, Gray Wing Life 2: Kindness and humility, Quiet Rain Life 3: Patience, Moon Shadow Life 4: Wise, nurturing heart, Storm Life 5: Resilience, Jackdaw's Cry Life 6: Initiative, Hawk Swoop Life 7: Honesty, Rainswept Flower Life 8: Fairness, Frost Life 9: Courage, Flutter. She also tells Riverstar that she was killed by a monster.

Makes you consider how much mankind has accomplished. I honestly might be mistaken when I say it's a mall, but here's some transcripts from the text that made me come to that assumption: "A massive roof stretched far above their heads. It looked as though Twolegs had build a second sky. The ground was shiny stone, and there were trees, but not like any Riverstar had ever seen before, and water, held in high-walled ponds where fountains spurted towards the roof. The water shimmered strangely blue, reflecting daytime stars that twinkled overhead. Twolegs swarmed like rats, streaming in and out of bright openings in the walls. Loud, rhythmic noise thumped from the openings, while the Twolegs cawed and chattered like crows. Riverstar was breathing hard. Smells overwhelmed him, sharp, tangy, musky, meaty - so many flavors jumbled together, which confused and alarmed him." [...] (escalator scene) "Up there!" Riverstar heaved himself from the water and nodded towards a slope of jagged steps. It was a short jump from the pool, and Drizzle made the leap easily. Arc followed, yelping with surprise as he saw his friends swept upwards. The steps were moving! He leaped after them, wobbling as he landed and ran up the steps past them. [...] The jagged steps lifted them higher. They were nearly at the top. His breath caught when he saw the steps flatten and disappear into a gap in the floor, sucked between teeth that looked as though they would crush them." [...] (elevator scene) "Riverstar saw an opening to a small, square cave. [...] Had the Twolegs noticed? None of them were looking. [...] Then the cave made a clanking noise. Riverstar jerked backward as the opening began to slide shut. [...] Suddenly the ground seemed to drop beneath them. Riverstar's heart shot into his mouth as the cave began to fall. Terror shrilled through his pelt. They would crash into the ground at any moment. He braced himself, pressing his belly to the floor. The cave stopped falling. It fell still with a smoothness that amazed him - as though he'd been scooped from the sky by a gentle paw - and the wall opened again."
I mean, it genuinely sounds like a mall to me. Did I get that wrong?

Not really a hot take. I'm pretty sure most people hate Skystar. I know he's not popular on here, at least. I also re-read DotC recently in anticipation for RH's release, so I'm fully aware how bad he actually was. But when I'm talking about his redemption, I'm talking about how things were set-up in TBS specifically that seemed like it was going to actually amount to something in the following books (actually taking accountability for his actions, disbanding his guards at the borders, etc...).
Then what could've been the start of something just immediately gets thrown out the window in the next book, making the transition from TBS to AFD feel pretty disjointed, at least to me. He's an antagonist, that much has always been obvious right from the get-go, but given that he never learns from his mistakes long-term, it makes me wonder if the plan was to always have him be this era's (arguably worse) version of the Terrible Two (Leopardstar and Onestar) or if something got changed between the last three books and they just never revised TBS to fit in with how he acts in all his other appearances for some reason. Also, continuously using him as an antagonist just gets really boring after awhile anyway.
In other words, my brain is looking at this from a Doylist perspective, not so much a Watsonian one.

I mean, it genuinely sounds like a mall to me. Did I get that wrong? Lol, they described the sensation of being on an elevator and escalator perfectly! I think it’s safe to assume it’s a mall. It’s not like the cats plan to buy anything, so they wouldn’t have to go into those details.

He stays with the Park cats.
2.) Yes, two. He loses one drowning trying to save Drizzle and loses the other in a fight against Slash.
3.) I've listed his new campmates in a previous reply, but other than the Park cats, and the kittypets, Cleo and Casper, not at the top of my head.
4.) Riverstar is thinking of cats to help the younger cats learn how to fight/hunt. He has an apprentices den build, and he gives the cats who are living in the apprentices' den their own mentors. For now, the older cats were just training the younger cats, but he acknowledges it specifically in a ceremony; Croak is Snow Tail's mentor, Dawn Mist is Trout Fur's mentor, Moss Tail is Willow Stream's mentor. Drizzle is the first warrior made (no ceremony, Riverstar just acknowledges her as a warrior), and Spider Paw is her new apprentice. This is all officially acknowledged when they realize Skystar's threat, too. So the idea of mentor/apprenticeship is built upon in this book.
5.) One of Riverstar's campmates, Silver, started the idea where RiverClan decorated their dens with feathers and shell. Night furthered the idea more when they moved into their island camp. Also, Night built Riverstar's den for him.
And random fun fact. I know a lot of you guys have said that Riverstar named his own kit after himself - Finch actually named Ripple Shine. Riverstar also suggested Arc Pelt for Arc Shadow's name, but Finch said Arc Shadow instead.

Good to know that Skystar is still an asshole and has basically learned nothing/not changed ("redemption" my ass).
So let me get this straight (which I'm not), they created a whole new character (named Finch) just to be Riverstar's mate and so he could have kits while their romance was written badly/rushed once again (like with Thunderstar and Violet Dawn)? *massive sigh and sideye*
At least the three RiverFinch kits have pretty neat names (maybe a bit too cool) Dusk Smoke, Ripple Shine and Arc Shadow. Like damn.
It really does feel like they just gave Riverstar a mate and kits so that he could be revealed to have modern RiverClan descendants. I know lots of people think it will be Frostpaw as for the direct line but I kinda want it to be someone else, maybe the soon to be outright villainous Splashtail. Who is related to Frostpaw as well anyways but still. Frostpaw seems more likely though.

That being said, if it had to happen, they could have truly at least gone with an already existing character like Night who had interactions with him for the entire book (and in the DotC arc) which seems to span a few years (or just a year idk). Creating Finch (and Flutter too for that matter) just to be Riverstar's love interest(s) is just so unnecessary imo.

THIS. This is why I will always say that I like Clear Sky as a villain but not "redeemed" because in my eyes he never was. The narrative tells you he was and want you to believe he is but I will never be convinced that Clear Sky is, or can be, good.
Someone like him, with all he's done, doesn't deserve redemption and my mind will never change on that.

Oh yeah okay. Honey Pelt could have been behind Skystar's back trying to prevent the battle or something, no, no, **** it. Poor Moth Flight. She parted ways with her kits for nothing actually because the parentage between Spider Paw and Honey Pelt didn't stop a battle between SkyClan and RiverClan from happening, worse, Honey Pelt didn't even try to acting for his brother apparently. I wonder how Moth Flight reacted to learning this.

This book feels... very underwhelming. It is, honestly. We have the preview, River Ripple has a few more campmates, then we have DOTC, MFV, and after that it's just him with the Park cats, and then an attack by Skystar that ends rather oddly. Skystar just retreats. That's... pretty much it, other than Riverstar gets a mate and kits. Not much to it.

I don't feel like reading 3 pages of spoiler thread can someone give me a summary of whats happened up to this point -The first half of the book is basically a DOTC rehash, other than what we've seen on the preview on the site. After River Ripple is beaten by Hawk, he becomes a kittypet. Then the Twolegs get a dog and River Ripple escapes. There, he meets Night and establishes a loose coalition of rogues. Not like the camps the mountain cats have, just a place where they chill. They're not required to stay. Fast forward DOTC, then MFV, then Riverstar has his nine lives. After that, Arc comes to the camp and tells him that Slash is bothering the Park cats. River Ripple goes to help him defeat Slash, Drizzle tags along. Riverstar loses a life saving Drizzle. They go to the Park where they defeat Slash. Riverstar loses a life during this. In the meantime, Riverstar falls in love with a cat named Finch. He dallies along and doesn't want to leave until Drizzle nearly drowns trying to leave without him. Riverstar realizes he has to go. Finch originally doesn't want to go with them, but changes her mind. They ride a makeshift raft down the river back towards RiverClan, where they come across a patrol. They go back to RiverClan, where Night was ready to go to the Moonstone to get her nine lives. Skystar has been hunting on their territory - while Riverstar was gone, a storm knocked a tree into RiverClan territory from SkyClan territory, so Skystar was using the tree to hunt. He says that "StarClan wanted him to." Riverstar organizes a system of mentor/apprentices and asks for help at the Gathering from the other Clans, none of them are too keen on helping Riverstar fight. So Riverstar fights alone.
