Val nodded, catching the keys the other woman threw towards her. She gave a small smile in response to her teasing tone. It was going to be okay, they’re ere quite similar. Both women were stoic, and Val appreciated that. She also didn’t like small talk, and she didn’t think she’d be hearing a lot of that from Ress either.
“I’m happy to drive,” Val nodded “but I’m warning you now that I’m used to driving motorbikes so... I might be a little rusty.”
Nevertheless she led the way down to the garage, unlocking the car they would be driving in and getting in the driver’s seat. She put on her seatbelt as Ress joined her and did the same thing.
“Alright,” the woman said as she started the engine and began to pull away “so we’ve never really worked a case just the two of us, right? You seem like a decent person, I think we’ll be alright.”
As long as the woman didn’t ask Ruiz too many questions (especially personal ones) or do that weird crying thing or anything like that then it would all be okay. Valentina didn’t deal well with emotional or chatty people.

“Do you want me to drive?” Theo joked with a raised eyebrow as he got into the driver’s seat
Perhaps the captain forgot that to let Theodore drive was to put his life in the young detective’s hands.
But later on, once they were parked up, the captain asked him to fill him in on the details Theo had so far.
“Okay, so Hart got away from me a year ago when a bust went wrong but I had this gut feeling that he was important, that he was part of something big. I got a tip that Hart is meeting with Cèsar Ramirez out here sometime today. Ramirez is a big supplier, and it’s a good sign because I know he has links to some pretty big groups. He doesn’t meet in the open like this often. Ramirez also supplies some small-scale dealers, which is the catch, but if he’s willing to meet Hart out here in the open I’m willing to bet Hart is the real deal. Otherwise he wouldn’t take risks to supply him.”
As the detective spoke, his eyes remained trained on the scene outside, watching for any sign of Hart or Ramirez.
“I’m hoping catching them will give us something we can use to bring us to something bigger.”

The one benefit of the worlds most boring car was that it was at least roomy, and surprisingly comfortable. It was the kind of car low level office workers, with long commutes would drive. A car you didn't mind being stuck in traffic in, because lets face it, it didn't go that fast anyway. Ok so Ryan was a bit of a car snob, he enjoyed anything with an engine and was a surprisingly good engineer, self taught he spent his free time tinkering on a rotating selection of project vehicles in his garage. It was pretty mindless work, but it kept his thoughts on what he was doing and prevented his mind wandering down dark paths.
It was part of why he was asking Theo pointless questions, of course he had read through the case files and knew all of this information, but there was something about drawn out, distraction-less pauses that invited. Obviously this was a case that was personal for Detective Danton, he had been the officer working on the original case. His blue eyes were also fixed on the street beyond, quieter than most city streets with only the occasional passer by, each he gave a quick assessment. Most were just members of the public, wandering to the shops, or home after a night shift, but he gave them all a quick look over anyway.
"What do you think of these sort of cases? They don't fall under what you deem boring?" He was interested to find the line of just what kind of cases the younger detective enjoyed, it was telling about ones personality, this sort of hands on investigating seemed far more Danton's style than door knocking and desk work.

(I didn’t know whether you felt like having them just sit and chat for a while or whether you wanted them to spot their targets so it’s up to you. Either is fine by me)
“No,” Theo smiled “this is definitely not boring. I don’t like cases where I’m stuck behind my desk or I’m just doing door duty, I like meatier cases like this one. Where I really feel like I’ve made a difference by taking someone down.”
Theo hated it when a perp got away. He could not allow that to happen, and so whenever a perp escaped him he would always try and chase them down until they were apprehended. He didn’t want to risk anyone getting hurt because he had failed when trying to arrest a criminal.
His mother always told him that he had become a cop because he wanted to protect everyone the way he has protected her when he was growing up. He wasn’t sure if that was true but it sounded good, so he didn’t care.
He looked over at his captain for a moment though, only breaking his gaze on the street outside for a moment.
“What about you? I bet you’ve worked some pretty awesome cases.”
Surely the best part of being on a stakeout with an officer who had been on the force for longer than him would be hearing cool stories? He knew Captain Ellis had to have some interesting stories to tell.
He had suspected that his captain was trying to pass the time by asking about a case that he had doubtless, if Theo knew anything about him, already done his research on. That was why he asked about cases. Those would be interesting topics to talk about and it invited stories to pass the time.

(I was thinking maybe have them chat for a bit, it's still early in rp time so I doubt their perp would have their meet up)
The shadow of a smile touched his lips, but his gaze didn't shift from the street around them. So Theo was a cop with a superhero complex, he liked that, meant his heart was in the right place even if his methods could potentially be problematic.
"Taking down bad guys, yes that seems a very 'you' explanation." It wasn't meant as a taunt, just an observation. A slightly suspicious looking individual took his attention for a moment and he lent forward in his seat. He watched the man walk towards them but it seemed the man was just a common junkie, scruffy and doped up.
Theo asked about his cases. For a lot of cops bragging about the cases they worked on was a favourite part of the job, but Ryan was not that way inclined. He had been when younger, more naive and hadn't seen quite so much darkness.
"Yes, I've worked on a fair few cases of interest. I wouldn't refer to them as awesome." A slight shadow fell across his features. "I was mostly on homicides. You probably know some of them. They teach one of them in the academy now." He was a little smug about that one. A typical murder that seemed to have no leads, until it fell across his desk and he linked it with several other murders and missing persons cases. After that he had qualified as a Criminal Profiler and that had seriously kick started his career.

“I guess it’s a ‘me’ answer,” Theo said with a shrug “I mean, I know people become cops for different reasons. But I don’t have a past to face or something to prove. I just want to help people and protect them. But I think that’s why most cops want to do this - I’m not special or different for that.”
He paused for a moment, looking out of the window, evidently debating whether or not to say something. Evidently deciding he should, he began to speak, though for the whole time he did not look at his captain.
“I’ve let someone get away before who ended up killing someone. I could have saved a life if I hadn’t made that mistake. That’s what really made me want to make sure that I was always out there and doing the best I could. I know that every bit of our jobs, even the paperwork, helps people. But it doesn’t feel that way.”
He listened to his captain talk about the cases he worked on, biting his lip.
“Ah, forgot you worked homicides. Probably shouldn’t have said awesome. But they really teach one in the academy? That is pretty cool. I knew I’d heard your name before. What case was that one?”
The strange thing ones, Theo could see a shadow of himself in the captain. Something that he could tell made them the same somehow. Maybe Ryan had been a lot like him as a young cop. Which told Theo that with a few years on the force under his belt, he could be a very different man. But he knew the kind of things the captain must have seen on his cases changed a person. Theo was childish, but he had already seen a lot. He joked about it, tried to turn the gore into something cool, but it got to him sometimes. Like it did everybody. It must have gotten to Ryan too.

"It's noble of you. Like you say, everyone decides to become an officer for different reasons but I think just wanting to help people is probably the most honourable. It also makes you more inclined to do stupid things." He inclined his head towards his companion but didn't take his gaze from the street. The atmosphere in the car changed a little at Theo's confession, it was something that clearly bothered him.
"Mistakes happen, we are only human." That was true but it didn't mean you wouldn't think about those mistakes all of the time, the what if's and the how comes. He had a few of those himself. He raised an eyebrow, awesome was certainly not the word to describe his cases.
"I started out in Georgia, the kind of crimes there are all what you would describe as boring. Except one case, a murder of some loner. No leads, no witnesses, the victim was ID'd because they were already in the system for several minor offences." He tilted his head back a little as he thought about it.
"I started pulling similar cases from the system. Turned out there were 5 open cases across three states all with the same MO. They called the perp 'The Trucker' I always thought giving serial killers nicknames was unnecessary glorification" And they were always so predictable. "Supposedly they teach the case to encourage looking beyond the case you're presented with. Who knows if it works"

“We have a Trucker situation”)

“Ehh, I do stupid things anyway,” Theo responded “but thanks. Why did you decide to become a cop then?”
Maybe that question was too personal, but he felt it was still worth asking anyway. The captain intrigued him, he wanted to know more about him. Whether or not he had been like Theo when he had been a young cop.
“Yeah, that’s true. I’m just trying not to make that particular mistake again.” he responded
He just didn’t want to let a criminal roam free a moment longer than he had to. He just wanted to make a difference, and some parts of his job didn’t feel like that. Besides, he didn’t have a head for organisation or paperwork.
He thought Val was the same. He didn’t know why she had become a cop, but since she didn’t talk about her past he imagined it was something to do with that. But she didn’t like to do paperwork either, she preferred to be out in the field. Not that that ever stopped her from doing her paperwork on time.
He listened in silence as he captain discussed his case. He definitely recognised the case from the academy, and he couldn’t help but give the captain a smile.
“Oh my gosh I remember that case! No, it was totally useful. I applied that to one or two other cases I’ve worked on. There’s always more of a link that you presume there will be. I didn’t realise that was your case.”
But he still shot the captain a glance.
“Names for serial killers are cool! I bet you thought it was cool at the time.”
