(I may also write out Ruiz’s court scene now while I have some muse for a long scene since the actual rp stuff to do with that scene will generally be the aftermath and it’ll be a while till we tackle it)

When Val’s partner turned to look at her, the woman offered a nod in return. The two women seemed to understand one another in a strange sort of way. Something Valentina couldn’t put her finger on.
It seemed like they might just get on. Maybe. The jury was still out on that one, but the woman was hoping this would work well between the two of them.
“Looks like it’s you and me, Lowelle.” she said
Once they were dismissed, she grabbed her coat, turning to Ress. They needed to get moving.
“Our victim didn’t live too far from here. Let’s go, we’ll check out his house. There’s gotta be something there to set us on the right track here.”
Sure, cold cases were something that happened. But there was always evidence somewhere, and that was something Val truly believed. It was just that sometimes the evidence wasn’t found. She was determined that there had to be something there, anything to point them in the right direction.
——————
Theo was in too good a mood to have it spoiled by not being able to work solo. He was finally getting into a juicy case once again, something he was thrilled about. It had been far too long - never again.
He simply nodded to the captain, feigning professionalism when really he was like an excited child. This was real detective work once again.
Once everyone had cleared out, the detective approached his partner.
“Alright, Captain, time for a stakeout. Which means you get to be stuck with me for several hours, unable to leave” Theodore said with a grin
He was genuinely just looking forward to this, actually. And though he would never admit it, he liked the Captain. He was a good guy and an excellent cop. This would be a good case, something that he was pleased to be working on.
“All we know is the location of the meet, but not the time. So we should get moving now and probably also bring snacks because we’ll be there for a while and I get snacky on stakeouts.”

Ress cracked a small grin towards Ryan, she understood his reasoning at least, but she was tired, having got 4 hours of sleep, and note to self, go to be at a decent time that isn’t midnight. Her eyes focused on Valentina, and she supposed that she could warm up a tiny bit to the other women. They didn’t have to be friends, but she could at least treat Val like a living human being.
“So, House first, sounds good. See if we spot anything there, and see if any updates on DNA tests have spawned,” She noted, grabbing her own jacket, and some keys off the wall. “So whose driving?” She asked, almost teasingly in a way, but regardless, she threw the keys to her partner, hoping the girl would catch them(and sure she would). Ress May be stoic, but she really didn’t trust herself driving on 4 hours of sleep. Also, she didn’t exactly like driving, ever, when she worked with anyone. She didn’t like driving when she didn’t need to in general.
Ress didn’t like working with others, and she didn’t like the comfort zone she was being forced out of. But she did like the fact that it would make her a better person. She really hoped her family would be proud.

Ryan stepped out of the briefing room, he could see the suppressed excitement in the younger detectives eyes. He wasn't sure if he was looking forward to being stuck o a stake out with him, in a confined space, but it would certainly be a good 'get to know you experience. Theo came up to him, the energy of an excited puppy, who's owner had just said 'walkies'. "You have appropriate clothing I assume?" He said simply, he had a selection of his own more casual wear in his office for just such an occasion, not that he planned to carry out a great many stakeouts. No he was a stand in whilst the number of Detectives was odd and they needed back up. He certainly wasn't going to send anyone in to a drugs bust alone. "Let me go and change quickly to something a little more subtle and we will get straight to it." His tone was serious, although the mention of snacks did amuse him. He vanished in to his office and returned a short while later in a pair of black trousers a plain white shirt and a casual jacket. Still smart but far less noticeable than the Captians uniform that was his everyday dress. "Lets move." Without waiting for a response he headed down towards the garage. They had a plain, undercover car assigned to them. Boring and everyday, no one would view it as out of place. "Now what do you want in the way of snacks?" He said, glancing sideways at the younger detective, a teasing smile on his face.

(TW I guess for brief mentions of drugs and abuse but tbh I should probs put trigger warnings right on the front page just in case cos there’s murder and drugs and stuff. Also this is typed on mobile so forgive probable typos)
Val had taken the stand, and was wearing her dress uniform as the captain had recommended. Her dark hair was in a neat bun, and she had forsaken the dark makeup she usually preferred. She looked a lot different than she usually did.
But now the questions were beginning, and she could already feel herself tensing up. The woman took some deep breaths to calm herself down. She was nervous.
“Can you please state your full name for the court?”
Okay, well that she could do. Though she knew that the captain and her colleagues were somewhere watching, and she could almost sense Lexi’s excitement at finally getting to hear what Val’s real name was.
“Valentina Lucia Ruiz.” the woman said calmly. She was feeling nervous but was doing well at keeping it at bay thus far.
“And you are the detective responsible for this case? All of the evidence that has been presented to the court was procured by you, and you were the detective who interrogated the defendant?”
“That is correct,” Val said with a nod
“Very well. Detective Ruiz, let us talk about your past for a moment. I would like to bring to light some issues that I think the court would find very interesting in their consideration of this case.”
Her heart sank, but she nodded. She could feel her breathing growing shallow, speeding up a little. She needed to relax.
“Now, I see here that you have a record. Care to talk us through that?”
It was all Valentina could do not to glare at the lawyer addressing her. She didn’t want to talk about it, and her heart was pounding and she was feeling faint. Making an effort to slow her breathing and keep her voice even, however, she began to speak.
“I was in and out of juvie during my teenage years. Relatively minor misdemeanours, but also some drugs charges.”
“I see. And were you addicted?”
“Yes, for a period. But I have been sober since I got out of juvie the last time.”
All of her problems had been because of her home life. Her family had been fairly well-to-do, and she’d lived in a nice house and gone to a private school. But her parents were emotionally and physically abusive to her and her older brother. It had made her angry to see her big brother, who she had always thought of as strong, made so weak by her parents. And she had been determined not to do the same. She had internalised her anger, but burned with rage inside all of the time. Especially during her teenage years when things were really bad.
“This seems like a sketchy past for a detective protecting our city and being trusted with the proper handling of evidence, interrogations, and even weapons. And then let us move on to your more recent issues. You’ve a history of angry outbursts in court, with you having made some rather imaginative and violent threats towards those questioning you in the past. I would not find it a stretch to suggest that your evidence is flawed, and that you would be likely to use intimidation or force in your interrogation of the defendant.”
“I don’t cope well with courtroom situations, I know. It brings back bad memories. And I know I get angry. But I am not who you think I am. I was a bad person once upon a time, and I know I was, but I turned my life around because I sat there in juvie and decided I didn’t want to be who I was anymore. I wanted to do the right thing and prove everybody wrong who had said I would never amount to anything, and to stop others making my mistakes. I turned my life around, got my GED, went to college, became a cop. And I’m a good cop. I might get angry but I would never let it interfere with my work, I am always above board. And my evidence speaks for itself because I never close a case until I have absolute confidence I’m right. And I did not come this far to be told by some stupid lawyer that everything I did isn’t worth anything because you’re not going to believe me anyway.”
She held her head high, almost surprised at what she had said, but trying to carry it off with some confidence. Her words were confident, her demeanour had to be too.
“No further questions.”

(I love Ryan he’s amazing x I might get replies up before I sleep
And ugh I was just doing research and realised that drug offenses would have disqualified Ruiz for financial aid for university so she probably couldn’t have afforded to go to college I’ll have to edit that, though I think most of the time you need a college degree to be a detective right? I might have to change some things)

“Of course I do. I’m going to go and get changed into something too, I’ll meet you out here.” Theo with a nod. The very suggestion that Theo did not have appropriate clothes for this stakeout shocked him. He was all for casual clothing.
He emerged back into the bullpen, having changed in the bathrooms, in a hoodie and a pair of jeans. This was Theo’s casualwear and was much more comfortable for sitting on a stakeout than his normal clothes. He noted his hair needed a trim; it was starting to curl a little. He didn’t mind his curly hair, but they made him look so much younger than he actually was and he just wasn’t a fan.
He smiled when he saw the captain in his clothes. Of course the captain had kept his rather official-looking style. Still, it was decent for a stakeout. He wouldn’t stand out too much so that was good.
“Don’t worry, I have some peanuts I sometimes bring on things like this,” Theo responded to the captain’s words, noting his teasing smile “they’re good for stakeouts because they’re healthy and not too fatty.”
This was, of course, not true. But Theo has always been told otherwise and anyway he had pretty much brought himself up on snacks like these as a kid. It wasn’t something he liked to talk about, but Theo had spent most of his time alone after his father left when Theo was twelve. His mother had worked a lot and so the boy had learned to take care of himself. In his own childish way, of course.
“Let’s roll. Stakeout time!” Theo grinned, heading towards the car they had been assigned.
It was such a boring car. He understood why it had to be boring but why couldn’t they have been assigned an awesome sports car or something.

The two moved forwards together, Ryans eyes glancing sideways as Theo commented on the peanuts. "You know that's not true right. Peanuts are almost 50% fat." He got the feeling from his attitude and his immaturity that Theo had not had supportive parents. It was a personal matter and not something the Captain would ever pry in to, but he was a detective and this was a relatively easy assumption to make.
Meanwhile, Ryan was thinking much the same about the car. A sedate, black sedan. Nothing flashy, it was the automotive equivalent of the colour beige, dull. "You want to drive?" He quizzed, though he had pulled open the passenger door and dropped his leather satchel bag in to the foot well. He had packed a few of his own provisions, anticipating the kind of 'snacks' that Theo would have bought, he was glad that he had, mostly for the flask of coffee, a vital staple of a stake-out.
A short while later they were parked up, a little down the road from where this supposed meet was planned. The windows were slightly darkened, making it much harder for passers by to look in, but still providing them a clear view. "So fill me in on the details you have so far." He said resting back in to his chair, looking at his stake-out companion.
