The pup was quiet for a moment at Sam’s question, trying to think about what to say. “I don’t think that’s a question for me. Mom just calls me David so that’s what I go by. Mom calls herself Felamore, but I still call her Mom.” He answered. He didn’t know what Felamore would actually call herself other than her own name. He was honestly a little confused by the question overall.

David let out another quiet chuckled and he grinned back over his shoulder. "It's nice to meet you too, Sam." He turned his head back as the ground under his feet started to turn softer and sure enough the little stream was there ahead of them.
He moved ahead without a second thought to the mud underpaw immediately sticking to his fur. He waded around in the water only up to his knees, looking for little spots that crawfish could tuck away into. Of course his movement muddied the water and he had to move himself out of the stream to wait for it to clear, offering Sam another smile.

"They're very good at hiding." David quipped, shaking some of the water from his limbs one at a time. He started watching the water again as the murk he'd kicked up was carried downstream, his eyes scanning the little crevices in the rocks and mud. He didn't see anything just yet, but his romping had probably scared a number of them into hiding. They'd probably be still for another minute before starting to venture out. "They're also very crunchy." He added with a big grin.

David nodded at Sam's observation. "Yup. by scaring them all off, they stream is still and easier to watch. If you see anything moving, that's one coming out of hiding!" He said, crouching himself lower to the water and watching closely for any sign of movement in the mud. He looked back up at Sam briefly, his tail still moving wildly in his excitement., then back at the water. He didn't see anything just yet, but he was very excited to pounce.

The movement downstream had actually been behind David where he wouldn't be able to see it, but indeed a thumb-sized crawfish was starting to peer itself out to gauge its surroundings. David was crouched facing upstream, watching a small motion of his own as he tried to decide whether he was looking at a twig or a crawfish's foot poking out. He hunched forward a bit, drawing all six limbs lower and tighter as he got ready to jump. He wriggled slightly in his anticipation, still unable to keep himself still when he was getting ready to make an attack.

David's ears flicked at the second that Sam broke the silence and he relaxed his pose. He nearly stumbled trying to stand normally again and he backed off from the water's edge with his eyes on the boy. He didn't want to get close and crowd him if he was about to make a catch. Instead, he moved himself as far back as the grass with his ears perked forward and tail wagging in excitement at the thought to Sam getting a crawfish out of the stream. "Get it!" He urged, his voice low. "Watch for the pinchers!"

David’s grin slipped at that. He tilted his head in confusion, not sure what to make of Sam’s refusal. “How do you know you can’t do it if you don’t try?” He asked, stalking up behind Sam and giving him a soft bump in his back with his horns. “Just give it a shot and if it gets away there’s plenty more,”
He pushed his muzzle into the boy’s back again, trying to nudge him forward and encourage him to give it a try. He had no understanding for any of Sam’s caution or discouraged demeanor, it made no sense to him why something as simple as crawdad hunting could be impossible to him.

At the first nudge, Sam held out his arms to help keep his balance. Of course, the beast was right. How would he know he couldn't catch one if he didn't try? It probably was simpler than he was making it out to be, but that didn't change the fact that he wasn't sure how to go about it. Did he simply reach in and grab the crawfish? Was there a way to lure it out of hiding? But before he could narrow down a plan, he was nudged again. The boy tried stepping forward to steady himself, but his foot landed on a rock slick with damp moss. The next moment found him on his side in the small steam, creating a splash that would have scared off the crawfish in question, and many more, back into hiding.

David froze when Sam had started to tip over, watching with his ears flattened down. That had been his doing. If there had been a chance Sam would catch a crawfish, it was gone now. He did feel a bit bad for that, Sam looked none too pleased to be soaking in the stream.
The pup made a soft chirp and just darted forward, letting his limbs go out from under himself and flopping into the water beside Sam. He smiled again, this time more apologetic. “Sorry. I should’ve been more careful with you.”

Sam sat up in and inspected his wet clothes. That part really didn't bother him as much as the part of how he was going to explain this to his aunt when he got home. Then David was flopping down next to him. The apologetic look on his face was one he wasn't expecting. After all, he had just scared off the crawfish again and wasted minutes of waiting. He shook his head. "No, it's okay, you didn't mean to," he said. After all, if the boy had been able to keep his balance better, he wouldn't have fallen in the first place. "I'm not the most graceful person in the world. This kind of thing happens a lot." Well, most of the time it was due to someone else's foot catching his and sweeping it out from under him, but he was used to it. It was easier to dust yourself off than trying to confront them about. "Sorry I scared it away again."

David’s tail flicked in amusement and he smiled again. “What are you apologizing for? This is your first time hunting crawfish! You think my first try went this well?” He quipped, standing and shaking the water from his fur. This sprayed droplets everywhere and left him with his fur standing in all directions but he still looked pleased. “You just need to keep trying and learning.”

“Well if I sit and tease you for it, you won’t want to try again.” David replied simply. He looked Sam over for a second and he grinned again. “You’re actually smaller than you look.” He remarked, amused at how loosely his clothing hung now that he was drenched. “I might weigh more than you do.”
He wasn’t trying to be rude about it, but David was just not realizing their size difference. Yes. Sam was taller, but he didn’t fill out his clothes and he didn’t seem to have much body strength compared to what David might have expected. Honestly now David just felt like he’d been bullying a younger pup.

Well, he had that right. Sam didn't take teasing well; he took things very literally. To the comment about his size, he couldn't argue there either. He was slim, slimmer than he could be. Most days the boy didn't feel like eating, or he simply forgot. At breakfast and dinner at his house, he usually ate light and quick, wanting to remove himself from the table and awkward conversation as soon as possible. When he was alone, he would snack, but snacks wouldn't fill you up like decent meals. "Yeah, I'm not much for bulk," he commented, trying to ring out as much water from his shirt as possible while he was still wearing it. There was nothing to be done for his pants. Just now, he was thankful his cell phone was in his backpack and not his pants pocket. Aunt Tera would never forgive him for ruining his phone. "I've never been one to try and body-build."

David nodded as Sam spoke. “Once you’re bigger, you realize how small you were. Especially when you want to be somewhere you don’t fit anymore. When I was a new pup, I used to fit in a spot in the den. I’m bigger now and I can’t get into the hollow anymore. You might fit though, if you tried. It’s a nice spot.” He waiter for Sam to finish shaking out his shirt before he moved over next to him again, this time much gentler about the force he gave when he bumped his head against Sam’s chest. “Let’s walk while you dry off. That is if you’re not for crawfish hunting again. I mean, you’re already wet if you take another fall.” He grinned.

David shrugged a bit at that. He didn't quite get why Sam would want more clothing since his clothes would eventually dry out, but he didn't press for any answers. Instead he just gave the boy's hand a nudge and began walking. He wasn't sure where Sam would want to go, but it was nice to just walk through the woods. Especially since he was usually restricted to certain spots in his mother's territory. She hadn't complained yet about him straying beyond where she wanted him to go yesterday when he'd followed Sam out of the woods, so he hoped she was just proud of his ability to sneak about.

"Not always. Oh, well it is nice, yes. But I cannot just roam." David replied, smiling. "There are certain parts of my mother's territory I'm told to avoid, and I'm never to cross out of our borders. I can understand it, and I'm happy enough here, but there's not many others to talk to and walk with. Which is why I'm happy you came back to our woods. It's nice having company." He stepped over a fallen log as he walked, one ear turning to listen to the woods as he focused on Sam. "You can always come out to our woods when you please, too."

“Humans do camping things right? Bring a tent out and stay through the night!” David suggested, his ears sitting upright at the idea of having someone in the woods overnight. His mother likely wouldn’t let the boy in their den, but maybe he’d be able to stay beside the tent and talk to Sam through it.

David mad a bit of a face, not understanding the concept of 'school'. He figured it would be better to ask his mother and another day ask Sam if she couldn't tell him. He started walking again, this time looking ahead at the trees and undergrowth as he tried to pick where he wanted to go. "Are there days you think you can come out and sleep in the woods? I'd stay close and make sure that you're safe out here."
