rules
due to the subject matter of this thread, there needs to be a few rules put in place. first, all forum rules must be followed. second, be respectful to everyone. all diseases, illnesses, conditions, disabilities, and feelings are valid. this is not a place for hatred or arguments. this is a place for discussions about disabilities, for support, for education, and for general chatting. third, please no spamming the thread. fourth, if you have any triggers come forward with them! this is a judgement-free zone and I don't want anyone getting triggered because they were afraid to speak up about their triggers. fifth, if someone says they need a trigger warning for something, respect that and use the trigger warning when appropriate. and lastly, please enjoy yourself.

chat members ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 Al, Alex -- triggers: s*xual assault, self harm/mutilation I'm here to chat with other spoonies and educate non-spoonies, as well as to give support to everyone that needs it. I have interstitial cystitis, complex non-combat PTSD, bipolar disorder type I, and generalized anxiety disorder. I'm also fairly high on the autism spectrum.
creatiine nickname -- triggers: here to get more education on how to not be an ableist. anxiety and depression
froglet nickname -- triggers: I'm definitely a spoons person but i don't really like to admit it, even to myself. but i have chronic severe bouts of depression and asthma/bad allergies so like..existing is pretty hard. tell that to my 3 jobs and pre-med classes though lol
@jasper nickname -- triggers: i consider myself a spoonie, and am here to talk to others who are similar? as far as mental conditions, i have severe ptsd, bipolar type II, and anxiety. that by itself is probably enough to slow anyone down, but that's not all. i'm also a type one diabetic, and all of my doctors think i've developed either fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue disorder in the past two years, although i haven't been officially diagnosed with either.
Sour Candy Sour -- triggers: I'd like to join this thread cause it'd be nice to talk to others like me, and who knows, maybe I could get some help here and there if needed. I have General Anxiety Disorder and I have some form of depression, though my anxiety is usually more of a problem as I can rarely ever leave my own home without getting at least a minor anxiety attack (Unless it's for going to school, but even then on some days in spring/summer I get pretty bad to the point where I have to leave early some days...)
Armageddidn't Ed, Tom, Haru-Chan -- triggers: YoI Iḿ kind of mentally disabled... I have Bipolar Disorder, though it's more manic. I also have ADHD, Yall can call em basically anything, though either Ed, Tom, or Haru-Chan is preferred. I can be over-excitable, and a little weird. I also sometimes end up self-deprecating myself on bad days. Sometimes, though, I do it jokingly. I've only truly been depressed once.
Arrow↠Deirdre nickname -- triggers: I've had with JIA (juvenile idiopathic arthritis) for practically my whole life but I started having Reynaud's and Pernio about eight years ago. That's also when I started to struggle with GAD and persistent depressive disorder. Just recently I found out that my JIA is causing me to be constantly anemic, which is kinda annoying.
@brokennose nickname -- triggers: I think I'ma spoony. I have depression.Ima suicidal.I don't know what it's called or if it even qualifies but I argue with myself for hours at a time and it gets physical cause I hurt myself doing it.
Leapkit Eddy, Chester, Leap, Rescue -- triggers: visual of self-harm/gore, mentions of otherkin I have diagnosed BPD (borderline), ADHD, C-PTSD, and depression, as well as scoliosis and some form of undiagnosed joint pains in my knees and wrists. Sometimes I will also get bouts of shakes ever since I was about 12 and they nver figured out what it was but i take a beta blocker for it when that happens and it can go away within the hour afterwards or until I exhaust myself. I'm so low on spoons I start using sporks, forks, knives, chop sticks, and my bare hands instead. I can't afford to just stop going most of the time, but it is what it is.
✨ nissabug ✨ Nissa -- triggers: I have diagnosed but medicated anxiety and trichotillamania with my eyelashes,,,,, it was diagnosed this year but i’ve done it for over 10 years lmao, and I have mild sensory processing disorder!!

I’d love to participate in this! It looks really neat and being educated on these kind of issues is really important to me - so this is definitely something I’ll try and be active in. For nick names I’ll go by Des or Destiny whatever else people can come up with. I’d consider myself a non-spoony who just really wants to help people who want it and learn what I can!

Hey! I'm a non-spoony, as the term says, but I have a few questions. 1: What, exactly, does or doesn't count as a mental disability? I don't want to offend somebody by saying that their condition "Doesn't count", or something. 2: Can I please have some education on triggers? "Triggered" is a term that a LOT of people throw around the internet, but I actually have absolutely zero knowledge on actual triggers. Thanks! Welcome! 1) Anything that is debilitating, such as severe anxiety or depression, schizophrenia, etc. There's probably a whole list of what mental illnesses are counted as a disability out there and I'd be happy to find it for you later(around 10 pm) but I'm leaving for work soon. If I find it before I leave I'll post it. ^.^ 2) A trigger is a real thing and people saying "oh i'm so triggered llolololololol" pisses me all the way off. A trigger is something that can TRIGGER a negative reaction - such as a flashback, panic attack, etc. I get triggered by seeing s e x u a l assault in movies and by seeing my abuser. There are tons of different triggers and I definitely know there's an extensive list of them so I'll try to find that as well. Also, kudos to you for actually educating yourself~<3

Also another great analogy for the whole spoon thing is using a glass of water. Some people in the morning start out with a full glass of water, while others start out with less or none. When you go throughout the day, your glass of water has sips taken out of it, and some people need to take longer sips than others for the same tasks. This is just how I would describe it, you don't have to pay any mind to it. c:

Speaking of anxiety; I just had to go through an attack just now for what reason I don't really feel like sharing but I believe the worst part is over, just trying to relax and wait for myself to stop shaking/feeling sick

hey guys! sorry about not coming back on last night. I'm flying back home to Virginia from Oregon this morning and my friend and I had to drive two and a half hours to get to the airport this morning. needless to say, we had to get some shut eye after we finished work at her farm. anyway!!! Sour Candy, I'm glad you're feeling better. 𝐿𝑜𝓉𝓊𝓈𝒲𝒶𝓋𝑒𝓈 I'd love to talk to you about your chronic pain/CFS! I have interstitial cystitis, which is a chronic pain disorder, as well as CFS/ME. also, by BPD do you mean bipolar or borderline?

I'm sorry I'm really uneducated ;-; anxiety and depression are one hundred percent disabilities. they're disabilities called "invisible" disabilities because they're not physical so you can't tell right away that someone has them. however, they're just as valid as physical disabilities and that's something extremely important to remember~<3 DSM-5 does count depression as a disability to their manual. It counts as a mental discord/disability. In many colleges and universities (I have no idea if you attend those yet, but I just wanted to inform) you quality for the disability office to help you. Which would mean you can have priority registration (before the rest of the school is allowed to pick their classes, though the veteran students register the same day as you), you're allowed someone to do note taking for you, you are allowed extra time on tests, seating accommodation, a person from the disability office can give you a ride to your classes with a golf cart, etc. It all depends on the school and what they can offer students that qualify for the disability office.
I know for me I get an extra time for my test and I'm always seated at the front. I don't take my exams in the classroom I either take it online, in the disability office, or in my professors office; which the professor, by law, works with your accommodations with the disability office. In the past I was allowed notes during my exam since I have a sort of learning disability that is hard for my brain to process information at the same speed of my colleagues. That aspect has some restriction because it might be fair for my abilities to pass a test. The school doesn't want to cross boundaries where it could be cheating. I could explain what counts as cheating if you want me to.
Additionally, I think SSI qualified people with depression benefits depending on the state, though SSI benefits are hard to get and maintain because you have to follow the rules.
