Just noticed that. Thanks!
I also just added in the two side images you've provided. Might move them elsewhere later.
I'll draw up some achievemnts. I figure we'd do it check-list style.
Anything to add/edit to the rules besides PG/PG-13?

Okay, here's a list I copied from my old clan. I think it'd a good place to start. Ignore the checkmarks.
Semi-Active ✔ • Reach 100 Pages Small Clan ✔ • Have 10 members Big Clan ✔ • Have 20 members Active Clan ✔ • Reach 300 Pages Beginner Battlers ✔ • Win one battle Death Song ✔ • Have five characters die Large Clan ✔ • 40 members Good Fighters ✔ • Win three battles Very Active Clan ✔ • Reach 500 pages Good Patrolling ✔ • Send one patrol to a border every other day Huge Clan • Reach 50 members Death Crowd • Have fifteen characters die Successful Mentors ✔ • Make ten apprentices into warriors Great Fighters • Win 6 battles Great Patrolling ✔ • Send out one patrol to a border every day Extremely Active Clan ✔ • Reach 800 pages Pro Battlers • Win ten battles Traitorous Plotting • Have a traitor in the clan Deathly Clan • Kill off twenty cats 9 Lives Gone • Have a leader die Pro Mentors • Make twenty apprentices into warriors Perfect Comradeship • Have thirty hunting patrols successfully catch a deer Mega Clan • Reach 100+ members Epic Patrolling • Send out two patrols to each border every day Fiercest Fighters • Win fifteen battles Experienced Clan ✔ • Become 6 months old Mega Active Clan ✔ • Reach 1200 Pages Lots of Lovebirds • Have twelve cats with a mate Dominant Clan • Send out four patrols every day, two to each border Activity Beyond Belief • Reach 100 pages in one day Famous • Become a well known clan on the forums Long Lasting • Reach a 1 year anniversary Model Clan ✔ • Never get deleted in a six month period
I took out any that weren't relevant. I'll be editing this so it'll change somewhat.
I think it'll really help to encourage activity, as well as an added benefit of giving the clan something to strive towards/ideas for other RPers to execute. I want to add more that are more unique, stand-alone goals, like the traitor of 9 lives one.

Oooooh I like those achievements! We'll add 'em. I need to adjust my prey/predator list but I'll do that tomorrow since it's kinda late.
Siders? You make 'em just like you would a banner but muuuuuuch smaller.

For other achievements, stand alone ones– Apprentice Quest: Attempt to see the Caldera/Bog Spirits? Or perhaps– Plague Spirit : Have more than 8 cats sick at one time. Mischief Managed : Play 10 successful pranks on rival Clan. Get Spooked : Spook/Be Spooked (by) a clanmate more than 3 times. Herbal Remedy : Help the medicine cat acquire herbs more than 2 times. Raiders of the Lost Clan : Successfully steal prey from rival Clan more than 4 times

whOOPS missed that post!!
I really like those, especially the Raiders one. They'd be good at sparking conflicts and drama Maybe we could each have a few that are clan-specific, too. BayouClan could have some about flooding and alligators, CalderaClan could have something about lava and steam vents?

Oooh yessss. I also had an idea.
Every once in a while we'll roll two D20 dice to estimate whether or not we'll have volcanic activity and what kind of eruption if so. The first dice is rolled to determine if there is volcanic activity and/or earthquakes caused by magma shifting. 1-5 is no 6-10 is light earthquakes (or 1-4.9 on the Richter scale) and maybe more smoke from the main caldera, 11-15 is earthquakes varying from 5-5.9 on the Richter scale 16-20 is yup, volcanic activity is definite with earthquakes on the scale from 6-7.9.
At that point we roll the second dice to determine what kind of eruption we'll be having, a water eruption (Vulcanian/Peléan/Plinian) or an earth eruption (Hawaiian/Strombolian/Weaker Vulcanian). Which just means which is more explosive and which is effusive, the more water in the magma the more explosive an eruption. As follows this is how I've organized it :: 1-5 is a Hawaiian eruption (almost no water or ash, super slow moving and will harden over after it's done) 6-10 is a Strombolian eruption (kind of like a soap bubble, it just throws the magma up into the air and it can be gentle or explosive) 11-15 is a Vulcanian eruption or a Peléan eruption (Vulcanian can be explosive or catastrophic, early signs of future Vulcanian activity is lava dome growth, and its collapse generates an outpouring of pyroclastic material down the volcano's slope characterized by short lived explosions followed by a quieter more continuous eruption.) (Peléan eruptions are characterized most prominently by the incandescent pyroclastic flows that they drive forth, basically a glowing avalanche of extremely hot volcanic ash. Categorized as catastrophic/cataclysmic/paroxysmic depending on the ejected material volume) 16-20 is a Plinian eruption (legit the worst one besides a super volcano. cataclysmic/paroxysmic/colossal. Plinian eruptions form sustained eruptive columns that can last for days. Regions affected by Plinian eruptions are subjected to heavy pumice airfall. Pyroclastic flows and surges are also a thing, and they move much farther than a peléan pyroclastic flow. Think Pompeii).
Side note, here are some potential achievements for Caldera Clan: Black Snow : Survive 1 volcanic ash fall Ashen Faces : Survive 1 or more pyroclastic flows Valley of Death : Survive 1 volcanic pyroclastic surge Bubble, Bubble, Toil, and Trouble : Survive 1 "earth" volcanic eruption Summer's Blessing : Survive 3 or more "earth" volcanic eruptions Fire Sky : Survive 1 "water" volcanic eruption (Vulcanian/Peléan) with 75% or more still alive Evermore : Survive 1 "water" volcanic eruption (Plinian) with 30% or more of the Clan still alive In the Summertime : Successfully climb to the Caldera without being seen by twolegs 4 times. Breathe Deep : Get 5 or more cats to find their warrior names in the caldera

I was gonna say, I only understood about half of what you just said xD All I read was "boom, bigger boom, massive boom, death" How often are you thinking we'd roll? And could I do something similar but with swamp flooding?
And I like those a lot! I'm going to draw some up.

Right! So I'm gonna just work on the history thing, waaay back when we had a basic history thing about the scar in the land, the east/west border and the map. Also here's a tentative general history:
In the Ancient Days, in the time when our ancestors walked not the sodden earth of the Bayou or the crisp grasses of the Caldera but the cobblestone paths of the town by the sea, there was a pull. A pull for some, that lead to the warm, berry bright woods of the mountain that loomed in the distance, where to live is to be fire itself. For others, it lead to the dark, mysterious bayou, where one finds strength and spirit in water. Our ancestors felt this pull, but only a few ventured out into the wilderness. Then more joined and soon, there was a hearty population living in the wild. At first, they tried to coexist as one, living on the edge of both worlds. A roughly built camp was dug into the land between fire and water, a large maple tree as the marker. But it could not last, for those of fire and air felt their hearts darkening and twisting in the shadows of the bayou while those of earth and water found unbearable uncertainty in the caldera's shadow. But still, they fought their spirits in an attempt to stay together. Fights broke out between the two factions and it was almost certain that blood would be needlessly shed until one day, the earth rumbled and the sky went alight with fire and smoke from the mountain above. The distinctive maple tree moaned as the wind picked up and the scent of rain filled the air, though no rain was yet falling. The invisible line between the groups cracked open like a gaping wound, bleeding red molten rock deep below, separating the two factions with a physical divide they dare not cross. Then a tremble in the earth, a rumble that made pebbles jump high and the maple sway treacherously. The groups scrambled backwards, away from the wound in the earth, not only because of the rumbling but because of the distinctive crack that filled the air. The maple tree, which stood so confidently was falling. The cats watched in horror and awe as the tree crashed over the gorge, as if to be a bridge. In the moments that followed, the reasoning for the rumbling became apparent. The river, which was diverted due to the earth quaking and shifting, washed into the gorge. The sizzling sound of rapidly cooling stone filled the air as the river ran over it's new path.
[ I am unhappy with parts of this. But it's a start! ]

Yess swamp floods! You can use my scaling if you'd like, to decide the level of flooding/type of flooding and how badly it messes with things.
Also that is essentially it. The hawaiian erruption through the strombolian eruption would only really affect CalderaClan but the rest of them would also affect BayouClan, particularly the peléan/plinian eruption, that would affect everyone. As for rolling, once a month? Whenever we felt like we needed to?
I'm gonna continue making the achievements specific to CalderaClan– it is quite enjoyable. Ooooh maybe there could be levels to members? Like how many achievements they've been a part of, etc? Like points and when they get a certain amount of achievements/activity then they can be allowed to create larger plots/given actual leadership positions, etc.

1 - 5 No change 6 - 10 Drought: roll further to check the intensity and its effects 10 - 15 Flash floods, which occur suddenly but end quickly (within a few days) 16 - 20 Flooding: roll further to check the intensity and its effects
DROUGHTS: 1 - 7 A slight drought in which the water level only dips about six inches, which would create shallower waters and channels 8 - 13 A worrisome drought; the level has fallen a full foot, drying out many channels and limiting the swamp ecosystems 14 - 20 A catastrophic drying of the bayou that results in the disappearance of many ponds, mires, and streams, leaving formerly underwater grounds high and dry
FLOODING: 1 - 7 A slight flood of six inches above the average water level, which can make travel tricky across the territory 8 - 13 A disconcerting rise of water level that is a full foot above the norm. Many land masses once high and dry are now underwater. 14 - 20 Disaster level flooding in which over half the territory is underwater, even reaching into twolegplace
Not quite as expansive/impressive as yours
Also, I was doing some research into possible conflict, and I'm thinking of bringing in swamp fever at some point (spread by leeches). Nothing like a good old plague.
The points system sounds fun, and if you'd like to do it for Caldera give it a go! Personally, I think it'd be too much to try and keep up with. Last thing I need is more things to keep track of.

Ooooh yes, I like that system. Simple but looks extremely effective.
Swamp fever? Gotta love that plague.
which gives me an idea for CalderaClan. Heat Sickness is a thing for people/animals who live in overly hot places and it can be deadly if not treated. Treatment is water, shade, sleep and some pain killers for humans but I might twist it up a notch for the sake of fiction.
I might try the points system, but I'm worried about competition and then scaling and what if I miscount the points someone has– in theory it's a good thought. Might work on it a bit more before I put it into practice.

I think I'll go with leptospirosis for swamp fever. Bacterial infection that comes from drinking or being exposed to infected water, which is spread by the urine of animals like rodents. Perfect for a swampy territory. Adults in good health should be able to fight it off, especially with help from antibiotics. But the young, elderly, and immuno-compromised can be very susceptible, especially with only wild herbs for antibiotics. Which then can lead to organ damage and even death. The dangers therefore would be keeping it quarantined away from the susceptible, as well as making the adult cats who have it vulnerable/weakened to any viral agents circulating at the time (like white/green cough)
Heat sickness x 5. Do it.
I'mma read the history you wrote up in just a sec

Yesssss ooh man that's gonna be great. How would they know how to block off the infected water source?
Heat sickness can cause delusions and brain damage and coupled with living on a volcano? Asking for trouble, particularly in the high summer months and during a drought/after a water eruption? Oh man so many possibilities.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They don't know where it comes from or how it originates, only that is has something to do with the swamp. What a scary thought.
I'd think smoke inhalation would also be a danger.

Ooooooh yes I like this. So much terror. What's safe? What's not?
Oh for sure, but only when the caldera is being grumpy. It's only a danger if you stay within the mists of the crater for too long, or if the volcano has erupted and the ash is falling.

I just finished the traditions and the welcome for CalderaClan– now to write up the camp. Tell me, should I have ancient lava tubes as the camp or just a standard we-live-in-bushes-and-mud-dens camp? Because lava tubes pose their own dangers– what if they reactivate?

|
|
Post by Saint Ambrosef on May 24, 2017 12:45:26 GMT -5
You could split the difference and make their camp in a cave formed from lava flow ages ago. Still volcanic, but not as dangerous as lava tubes.
Just to forewarn you, I won't be on too much today. I have a buttload of math I gotta get done and turn in the grades by the end of the day, so I won't have much free time. Tomorrow will be normal. I'll work on the history, welcome, and finalize the achievements and rules.
