Maria stood in the living room, her body frozen in the closing pose for one of her lyrical dances. After a few beats, the song playing through the speaker attached to her phone drew to a quiet close. After a few seconds more of holding her pose, almost as if she was waiting for the applause of her invisible audience or some one to draw the curtains closed before her, she relaxed. Her arms dropped from where she'd been holding them up, and she picked up her phone, preparing to start the delay timer on her phone and go again. A soft knock sounded on Maria's door, before it opened a crack and Ruby's head poked in curiously. "Hi Maria, what are you up to?" The 11 year old asked, before opening the door fully and coming in. She leaned slightly against the door, arms behind her back as she looked at the setup with childish intrigue, a cheerful smile dimpling her cheeks. Although Maria was a teenager, Ruby still enjoyed her company immensely, and when those closer to her age weren't around, she often wandered down to the basement to see what her older sister was doing.

Maria looked up, a smile already across her face. She dropped her phone on the nearest high surface and stepped closer to Ruby. "Not really a whole lot. I was practicing one of my lyrical routines, but I've been through that a few times already." She looked past Ruby into the main room for a second before looking back at her younger sister. "Were you wanting to ask me something?" She then got a rather mischievous look on her face. "I could teach you some of the younger kid's routine if she wanted?" she offered, half expecting the more sport girl oriented to say no, but also knowing she was often interested in her sibling's activities.

Ruby's blue eyes grew as wide as an owl when she heard the offer, and she immediately nodded, delighted. She was still at that age where she wanted to learn anything and everything, and although she was more of an outdoorsy person, she enjoyed trying other things too. Plus she enjoyed watching Maria dance, and admired the older girl's balance and intricacy. She was definitely eager enough to try, although if the energetic tween would stay still long enough was a different story. "Sure!" She said with a big smile.

"Okay. We'll start with some of the simpler stuff, early ballet, I guess? If you pick it up the basic technique quick enough, I can go through the moves and just teach them to you as you need them." Maria smiled and walked closer to Ruby, taking her hand and leading her out into the more open space of the main room of the basement. She was excited to teach, because teaching dance was something she'd considered as a future job; she'd always enjoyed helping with the younger classes at her studio when she had time. "Now take off your shoes, they're not flexible enough for you to do everything easily. I would also take off socks as well, because you might slip, but if you'd prefer to leave them on that's fine."

Ruby nodded as she listened attentively. It was pretty funny to see the little girl hanging onto Maria's every word. The older kids really were role models to her after all. She took off the sneakers she had on, worn and dirty from extensive use, and her socks soon followed. The girl was now standing barefoot, wincing at the feeling of the cold cement under her bare toes. She wiggled her toes slightly as she got used to the feeling and looked up at Maria expectantly for the next set of instructions.

"We'll go through basic foot positions first. You'll use these in almost everything." Maria said, the stepped in the first one. Her heels were pressed together, her toes turned out at forty-five degree angles. "This is first position. Then there's second." Her feet slid out so that they were about shoulder width apart, still at the same angle. "And third." She finished, her right foot landing so that its heel pressed against the center of her left foot's arch, still at the forty-five degree angle. "There are a couple more, but those are the main ones. Did you get it? Let me see them."

Ruby watched carefully, wiggling a little bit in place, as if itching to try herself. When finally prompted to do so, she tried her own hand at them. She did the first two alright, but struggled with the third, having trouble remembering how exactly it looked. She eventually completed the step after being hit with an epiphany on the right step, beaming at Maria upon finishing. Her steps lacked the precision and finesse of Maria's of course, but they were a start.

"Good!" Maria said, just as Ruby finished the third position. She'd seen her struggling, and had been about to step in just before she got it. "So now we'll start the actual routine. I'll show you, we'll go through it together a few steps at a time, then I'll watch you do it, correct if I need to, then we'll learn a little more, and so on." She then stepped into the opening pose, and ran through the entire song, counting just loud enough for Ruby to hear her, but quiet enough that it would be masked by music, if any had been playing. It was a simpler dance than any she actually preformed, but still harder than those that they would teach to a toddler or the other youngest classes.

Ruby's eyes flitted back and forth as she watched Maria dance. She was glued, just like she always was, and clapped gleefully at the end. Even if it was a simple one, she always thought she was amazing. "It looks cool! But....hard." She admitted sheepishly, which was pretty hard for the normally very competitive girl to do. She had watched all the steps, but could only remember a few. It was amazing how she could remember complex soccer positioning and maneuvers, but her mind was completely boggled at a few dance steps. "One more time, and I'll join you?" She suggested, thinking that maybe if she tried it herself, she could get it with guidance.

"I didn't expect you to get all of it from that, Ruby. I'm going to go through it slower," Maria said, shaking her head with a smile. She'd forgotten that Ruby's competitiveness sometimes lead her to think she'd be expected to do somethings without the proper teaching. "We'll start at the beginning," she continued, then began to lead her younger sister through the first three moves of the dance, making sure to watch her sister's face for any confusion or difficulty learning it.
"Okay," she said afterwards, "Show me those three and we'll continue on to the next bit."

Ruby watched again, trying to keep focused. She seemed determined to learn it this time. After taking in the three moves, she nodded. "Okay! I think I can do that." She said slowly. She tried, and this time was just a little bit smoother than before. The second go-around definitely helped, because she seemed to be remembering better. She completed the last step and then stopped, letting out a breath she had been holding. "Did I do good?" She asked, looking up at Maria hopefully.

"Yeah. You're picking up a lot better than most of the other first time girls I've seen." Of, course all of the girls she was thinking of were a little younger, although she was pretty sure that wasn't something Ruby wanted or needed to hear. She smiled encouragingly instead, and started to teach a few more moves. Ruby was learning pretty quickly, considering that she'd never done any real dancing before. "After we get a little more of it, we can try putting it with the song as well, instead of just the counts."
(It's getting pretty late here, so this will probably be my last post for the night. I should be able to get back on either a little late tomorrow night or late Friday night. (Color guard takes over half of my free time but I love it anyways.))

(It's fine Con. I know how life can be ) "Yeah. You're picking up a lot better than most of the other first time girls I've seen." I should be able to get back on either a little late tomorrow night or late Friday night. (Color guard takes over half of my free time but I love it anyways.)) Ruby was in the process of executing a move when she heard the last part, and she stumbled slightly. "W-With the music?" She echoed, sounding a little overwhelmed. She had just started getting the hang of moving with the counts, but the sound of adding live music sounded like a bit much to the eleven-year old. Nevertheless, she shook her head slightly and steeled herself. "I can do it!" She told Maria obstinately. Even if she doubted herself, Ruby was willing to try.

"If you're nervous we can go over the dance a few more times. If you're not sure enough of it, I'd rather keep working on the same part than have you stumble through blindly. Here, go though it with me again, then we'll go through it with the music together, then you can try it yourself. I'm not going to just throw you to the sharks Ruby." Maria said. She then adjusted her stance back to the beginning pose, and began the counts again, looking back at Ruby every now and then to make sure she was doing alright.

Ruby nodded and went through the steps again, following the counts the best she could. It was a little unpolished, but it came out better than the previous attempt. Ruby was starting to get comfortable with it. She completed the last step, and took a breath. "Okay, we can do it with the music now." She said with a small nod.

Maria smiled and nodded back, then retrieved her phone and speakers from where she'd left them, returning to Ruby with the song already queued up. She hit the delay button, set down the two items, and returned to her spot, holding the beginning pose. She counted through the first eight counts of the song, then began to dance at just the right time. She didn't completely expect Ruby to stay with her, as the song was a little faster, and she'd forgotten to give her a que for when to start.
