"It's fine," he said after a minute, resting his head back next to hers, counting the ceiling tiles. Maybe she was doing the same thing. "Really, I've slept in a worse situation than this one."

Madeline didn't want to know. Not in a way that she didn't care, she just didn't want to hear anymore pain he had experienced, didn't want to feel anymore herself, or him. Yet that would never be true; life would always have those bad turns, she realized. She turned her body in his direction, and looked directly into his eyes. "I'm glad you're here." With me. "Not there." By there, she meant HYDRA. She closed them again and moved her head to the spot where his arm connected to his chest, and put her hand on the edge of his abdomen.

It was unfamiliar to him, the sensation of someone lying next to him, that was. For a moment, he tensed, and then relaxed, breathing out softly. "I'm glad you made it out too," he replied, breaking eye contact to study the panels on his metal hand and arm, "it was a bad place. They did bad things." To him. To her. He remembered a lot of them, when he thought about it. He tried not to think about it, actually.

She had started to nod off to the sound of his voice, but then suddenly remembered she had promised to stay awake with him that night. That was why she had stayed, right? To help fend off any bad dreams that might come to him, and vice versa. He drew her attention to his arm and she watched it to. "I hope we never see them again." she mused.

"Rogers and Natasha said they'd protect us," James sighed, "and that other man. It's only that, in my head, everything is backwards, I think. The people they work for, S.H.I.E.L.D., they're supposed to be our, or my, enemies." He couldn't get it out of his head. Every time he saw them something ticked. He was still scared.

"But they're not." she reminded him, although she supposed he already knew that, and was just trying to get used to the idea.

He paused, taking a deep breath, and then nodding, softly, "I know, I do. I just... I wish that I knew who I was." He could remember snippets if he really tried, but it was almost like his brain was trying to force him to not. Maybe it was because he was used to pain when he asked questions, especially about himself.

She wanted to tell him not to try to think about it, but didn't. He seemed so desperate to learn about his old self. It was sad. She tried to be optimistic with her words. "Maybe you'll remember some day." she said, keeping her eyes transfixed on where her hand was and watching his stomach rise up and fall down with each breath he took.

"Maybe," he replied, shaking his head softly, "one of the doctors came in, before I met, well, saw Steve. He said that they shocked me, to screw with my head. There was... lots of damage." He shrugged one shoulder. Maybe he'd remember fully. Maybe he never would. "Do you remember anything, Madeline?"

"You mean, before I was brought in?" she asked. "Not really. I've had dreams, but they never explicitly revealed that much to me. Mostly just angry voices, fuzzy images I couldn't make out. That's it. And then there was the one I told you about earlier. That was probably the most detailed one I believe."

James hummed in the back of his throat, nodding slowly. At least he had someone to tell him about himself, whether he trusted them entirely or not. Madeline had no one. "I hope you remember," he said slowly, looking down at her with an eye-crinkling smile.

"Thank you, again." she whispered. A yawn was beginning to build up inside her again but she fought it down, her eyelids fluttered instead with tiredness. No, she had to stay awake, for James. He couldn't be alone. She hated that feeling. She looked into the bright screen of the TV to see if that would help.

"Madeline," he said after a moment, voice soft as he looked down to her, "you can go to sleep, if you want." He would be fine. He was scared, and he was in a strange place, but it wasn't the first time. She probably needed to rest more than he did.

"You'll be okay?" she blinked slowly up at him. Before he could answer, she closed her eyes, adjusted herself and tried to sleep, listening the beating of his heart underneath her ear. She'd need to get up early in the morning to get back to her room if she didn't want anyone walking in on them. "Wake me if you need anything." she said, and then fell silent.

"Yeah, I'll be okay." James didn't have any recollection of falling asleep, but he must've, because he blinked awake when he heard the door, and felt sunlight hit his eyelids. Someone had turned the TV off, and as he blearily raised his head he heard someone say: "Aw, that's adorable." And there were Natasha and that other man (Sam?) staring at the two of them, both smirking.

(GotG 2 was hilarious! Have you seen it yet?)
There were muffled voices, and when Madeline woke, her surroundings were brighter. She didn't notice Natasha and Sam at first, the light was coming in through the window and blinded her vision. When she did recognize their shapes and who they were, her eyes widened and stomach tightened. She tried to scramble backwards, but being that they were in a bed, there was very limited space she could move to. "Um...." she glanced sideways at James, then back at them. Crap.

[[ nah, i think i'm going next week. ]]
"It's okay," James said simply, looking over to Madeline, now that he had his bearings. He almost swung himself out of the cramped hospital bed, but then remembered that he was cuffed. "Natalia, can you uncuff me?" And without a question, she did, producing a key from one of her pockets to free him. He hopped out and brushed by her, into the bathroom. That left Madeline with Sam and Natasha. "So," the only man in the room said, eyebrows raised, "have a nice night?" "Stop it!" Natasha chided as she walked back over to him, smacking his arm with the back of her hand.

[Okay. They showed the Thor 3 trailer and I almost lost it. I'm sure the lady next to me didn't appreciate it that much, whoops. xD)
Madeline didn't say anything at first to that, she avoided eye contact with either of them. Her face was completely red with embarrassment. At least they weren't mad, but she still wished they hadn't caught them like this. Still, she felt the need to apologize. "I'm sorry. I should have stayed in my room." She blinked at her hands and looked up. There was confusion and a tiny reminiscence of the hurt she had felt last night in her eyes. She didn't want to apologize, was there really a reason to? She didn't feel like telling why she had come here either.

[[ oh gosh. me. ]]
"Nah, it's fine," Sam said with a shrug, "I watched you leave on the cameras and saw you come down here, figured you couldn't get back to sleep." His smile, though mischievous, was good natured as he leaned back on the dresser, and Bucky came out of the washroom. "You sleep well, man?" There was a pause where Bucky stopped moving altogether, thrown off by the question, before he nodded and scooted back to the bed, where he sat. "Yes," he told him with a nod, "I did." "Good," Natasha replied, tossing bags at Madeline and Bucky, that held clothes, breakfast, and some toiletries, "you two should get ready. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s head is going to be here to debrief the two of you at noon. Sorry, James, but you have to wear handcuffs." The man paused, and then nodded, clutching the bag to his chest as he said, "It's fine. I don't trust me either."

She nodded. "Okay." Madeline took up the bag with clothes in it. "Do you mind if I take these to my room before that?" she asked, more so Natasha than Sam. She would change and get ready there, and it would be a nice break to think privately over last night, and about what was to come when S.H.I.E.L.D. questioned both of them later without being distracted.

"Bye," Bucky said, raising one hand at Madeline, as he scooted off the other side of the bed, eyes darting away from her as he opened the curtains, blinking against the light before he stretched. "Want me to walk you up?" Natasha directed at Madeline, from where she leaned on the wall.

"Yes. That'd be nice." she answered her. Madeline waved back at James before she left. They returned to her hospital room, in the state she had left it in. She sighed and took the clothes into the bathroom to change. She noticed the bruises along her body in the mirror that were still there, but thankfully weren't as dark before, they were fading away. She quickly ran a brush through her hair, which had become a bit frizzled after getting out of bed, and brushed her teeth. After that, Madeline flipped the switch, straightened her shirt and walked back out into the main room where Natasha was waiting.

Natasha was waiting, perched on the armrest of Madeline's bed, eyes focused on nothing until the young woman came into view. "We were going to go down to the cafeteria," she told her, unfurling and standing up, "Steve's going to meet us. This is a S.H.I.E.L.D. hospital, no civilians. Is that okay with you?" She was still going to get food whether Madeline liked it or not, but it would be easier if they all went together. Sam said that Bucky had agreed to come along.

"No, I don't have a problem with that." If she was talking about the man, Steve as they called him, she'd just try to stay out of his way as much as she could. If he was meant to be part of the whole questioning process, well, that was a whole different situation and she'd just have to toughen up and face him. Besides, he was with S.H.I.E.L.D., and their goal was to help people, not harm them. And the thought of food, even if it was from a cafeteria, made her hungry. She hadn't had a lot the last few days due to her nervousness.
Steve was already waiting there, he had gotten up early and agreed to meet Sam, Nat, Bucky, and Madeline in the cafeteria before the debriefing. He leaned against one of the tables with his food already, and lifted his wrist to check his watch. It read, "8:30 AM".

"Come on then," Natasha said, beckoning with one hand as she pushed herself away from the bed, and began out of the room. The walk to the cafeteria would be short, and maybe she'd be able to discuss a bit of what the briefing would entail, including some of the more... personal questions.
Meanwhile, down in the cafe, Sam and Bucky slid in the chairs across from Steve. Sam had put on a suit and shaved, but he still looked as worn out as he had in the past couple of days as he took a swig of his coffee and stabbed moodily at his eggs. Bucky looked tired too, and nervous, fidgeting and tugging at his own suit that had been provided in the bag. Sam had made him tie his hair up too, and he couldn't help but reach up and screw with that, not used to it touching his face. "Good morning," Sam finally greeted Steve, in between bites of eggs.

Madeline closed the door behind them and kept pace at her side while they walked down the empty hall to wherever the cafeteria was. "Do you know what they are going to ask me? I already told you everything I could, I think." There wasn't that much, it wasn't like she had worked at HYDRA undercover to find out information. No, she had been stuck for there for a time where there was barely anyone to speak to. And almost every day had been the same routine; wake up, train, refuel, and then back to the cell.
Steve was wearing his brown aviator jacket, and his hair was neatly combed and styled as always with gel. "'Morning." He returned back to Sam with a thin smile, mind somewhere else. He didn't worry about eating at the moment, although he was pretty hungry. He was more concerned about how this questioning was going to turn out for Bucky. His eyes flickered over to his friend, who was messing around with his hair and outfit. "Damn it, Buck. Don't worry about that right now." he said low, but firmly. He didn't mean to be upset with him, he was just worried. If Bucky made one wrong move, or said the wrong thing... Steve didn't want to think about it.

"They'll probably just ask the same questions that we did, but in more detail," Natasha explained, "and they'll probably ask about your personal relationship with James." She shrugged, glancing over at Madeline. She would be fine. If anything, Natasha and the rest of them were most worried about what James might say or do. It was no far stretch to say that he wasn't necessarily in his right mind, and though he'd been doing pretty good this morning, well, Natasha wasn't sure that he was as stable as he seemed. But, that was what the handcuffs were for, so she'd have to pray that he'd be fine.
Bucky persisted in his noncompliance with his outerwear, unbuttoning the front of the suit, and deftly yanking out his ponytail, so that his hair once again fell into his face. That was when he stopped, and took a big bite of the eggs he'd piled onto his plate, apparently done with his silent complains, for now.

"Oh, alright." on the outside, she acted fine, really, the first half of what Natasha confirmed wasn't too bad, she hoped she would be able to get in there, say whatever needed to be said, and get out. My personal relationship with him?Did that have to include last night? It was just one time, it wasn't going to happen again... She wouldn't say anything, even if Nat and Sam had caught them together, the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't need to know as well, especially Steve.
Once Bucky had finished fiddling around and began to focus on his breakfast, Steve turned back to Sam. "Maria was just here a while ago, she left right before you two arrived. She told me it starts in around thirty minutes." He began. He looked over his friend's shoulder, "Where are the others? They're going to run out of time."

Natasha simply nodded. She could feel Madeline's discomfort, and well, she could guess what it's about. She hoped the woman knew no one was going to get mad, but all she said was, "Oh, here we are." She opened the double doors to the cafeteria with the keycard around her neck, gesturing to the line, "Take whatever you want, it's on me."
Sam looked behind him as well, and said, as Natasha and Madeline entered, "There they are. They have a longer walk." He turned back around, taking a loud bite of his toast as he checked his phone with his other hand. Bucky was just pushing his food around on his plate now, separating the fruit and the eggs and the meat perfectly, and then shifting them around again.

Madeline walked over to the counter were they were serving breakfast, it was set up kind of like a buffet line. She didn't take much, just a glass of milk, some cereal, and dropped a few strawberries into the mix. After that she had to look around to find the table where the others were, and spotted them sitting in a corner already. She shuffled over with her things, and found an empty chair next to Sam. "Hi." she said awkwardly, lifting her hand in a small wave.
Steve was quiet, his elbows were propped up on the table as he studied her not angrily, but his eyes were giving her a hard stare. He wasn't about to make any harsh comments at the table, he'd tried to honor what Bucky wanted, if it was to be nice to this girl. Madeline picked up her spoon, and stirred her cereal, avoiding eye contact.
