Kendall frowned as the creature bared its teeth when she neared it, becoming particularly annoyed when it refused her help. The clothing covering its body was shredded and stained crimson with dried blood, the bandages on its back clearly needing some adjustment if they were to work properly.
"If you want to get better and stop cowering under my bed and go back home - that is, if you have one -" she added hastily, "then you need to let me fix this mess. You've done enough damage to my place already and I can't have you bleeding out in the night." She shifted closer to it, her eyes softening when she met its gaze. "I'm here to help you, okay? I know you're a little nervous, but I'm safe. You're safe here, okay? Just let me fix your bandages and then you can rest here for the night if you need to."
The young woman moved to touch the creature's back, then paused. "I suppose you'd want to know my name before you'll actually let me help - I'm Kendall. I've done this - well, not this exact situation, mind you - before. If you don't mind me asking, what's yours? And where did you get this... pelt?" she asked, her hand reaching out to touch it gingerly.

Thornshade The creature flinched at her words, trying to move back further. There was no room for retreat between him and the wall, so he was only able to press against the wall a little more. The wound in his back only hurt more and he gave a small hiss of pain, pulling up the seal pelt over his head. He didn't want to face or deal with the woman here. Whatever he'd thought of her before, he had to assume she was hostile. Of course she wouldn't be happy to find him in her house. No human he'd ever heard of allowed a nonhuman in their midst. --------------- Cobraheart Blair had remained seated where he'd been when the beast left the cave. His eyes watched the entrance, ready to stand off against any unfamiliar creature that attempted to enter. He recognized Avi's silhouette as he returned and waited for him to pass before turning his gaze back to the entrance. Even if the beast would fight on his behalf if something attacked, he felt better to remain vigilant himself and watch. Years of camping alone in the woods with the knowledge of what roamed it left it as a habit. (Sorry, sooooo much homework. Only had time to make garbage posts in OTD How long should we wait before introducing the wolf?) "Here." The beast set the snow down near the fire, tail still lashing as it had been for the past hour. "Be quick about it. The longer we sit here, the hungrier they get." Now, in the safety of his home—though Avi was still looking over his shoulder—he could deal with the arrow. He took it gingerly in one hand, thinking he could just pull it out, but was surprised by the amount of pain it caused him. Biting back a few choice words, he gave up and paced toward the flames, deep in thought about Blair and the monsters outside and the deal he'd made. Things had changed drastically in the past hours.

He listened to her as best he could, but at some points, her words became harder to follow. Names... okay... He started to open his mouth, but when she moved forward with her gaze on his pelt, his hand gripped the animal hide tighter and snapped it in the opposite direction of her reach. "Stay away from it!" He barked, showing his teeth again. He didn't mean to raise his voice when she had yet to, but he was terribly afraid of her taking it. That was how this whole mess had started. "If you truly mean to help me and you're not trying to trick me into anything, you'll leave it alone! I'm not too weak to fight a human threat just yet."
----
(It's all good) (I'd suggest a run-in with the wolf's underlings later in the night, maybe? The actual wolf might be a little later, or after their introduction?)
Blair watched the snow as it began to soften, and then melt. He waited a little longer for it to be warmer. The noise from the beast's attempt to remove his arrow drew his attention and he gave a slight smirk. Not to start anything, but it was almost funny to see the familiar sight. "Give me some credit, those are monster hunter's arrows. The only way that arrowhead is coming out is if you know how. You think I'd use something that anyone could dislodge and toss aside easily?" He picked up the can of melted snow and paused. In all fairness, he had gotten him the water he needed. "I'll take it out once I'm done with this." He offered.

"Tell me how," the beast roared. It had come out more loudly than he intended, but so it went when Avi was angry and in pain. "I don't need your help." Clearly he did need help, but Avi was nothing if not stubborn, and still didn't trust Blair. This was a working relationship. This was not a friendship. It didn't make sense that he couldn't just pull the arrow out anyway; snap it in half and give it a good tug. Then again, there were a lot of things the demon didn't understand about Blair and his career, for lack of a better word. (That's a good idea. Should help to establish some element of trust. Then again these things hardly ever go the way I want them to. Seems like the characters have a mind of their own )

"It's more muscle memory. It's a motion, I can't really describe it. You learn it from years of practice. But if you want to remove it, you'll have to push it the rest of the way through and hope you don't image anything important." Blair replied. He left it at that. No need to push the monster for trust. If he was stubborn enough to keep pulling, he'd only tear himself up worse. That wasn't his responsibility, he already told him how it worked. Instead, he focused on the water, dabbing a piece of cloth from his bag and dabbing it at the wound along his head to try to clean it up.

Avi, his shoulder now not the only damaged part of him, carefully weighed his options. He didn't trust Blair. His distrust, at first, was enough enough to make the beast lean toward pushing the arrow all the way through. And then he made the mistake of moving. That arrow wasn't going anywhere. Finally, less than happy with the decision, Avi resigned. "Fine. But don't try anything, hunter."

Blair nodded slightly. "Alright, let me finish up here." He replied simply, wiping away the last of the blood from his hair with the cloth. He soaked the clothe gain and wrung it out before pulling a thin bandage from his head. He did a quick job wrapping his wound before standing up. He picked up the can of water and walked over to the beast. It was still a bit odd to be standing in front of him without being about to fight him. Even if he didn't fight every monster he came across, he usually didn't hang out with them. He took a look at the arrow and frowned a little. It was a terrible shot. He needed more practice at firing without taking time to aim. "Well... Sit still. This isn't really a painless thing." He said, putting a hand close to where the skin had been punctured. He placed another hand on the arrow and waited a bit for the beast to brace himself.

"Just do it." What bothered Avi more than the pain was the waiting, especially for something like this, where he had no idea what to expect. He didn't see how things could get any worse, stuck here relying on his mortal enemy for help. The beast could honestly say sitting still in front of Blair—as he'd ordered—was the strangest thing that had ever happened to him. And really he was just biding his time until the wolf went down. Avi gave himself a week at best, with the hunter's brains and his brawn. There were pros and cons to working together under such a contract.

Blair checked the arrow a second, figuring out what side the barbs were on before he pushed downward to dislodge the barbs and pulled the arrow outward. He'd never actually had to remove an arrow from a living creature, so he wasn't sure how badly it would hurt, only that it wouldn't be a pleasant experience. He kept his thumb pushing down on the arrow to keep the barbs from rehooking the beast's skin or muscle as it was removed. He saw the glint of light from the fire hitting the metal under the wound and gave one last tug, freeing the arrow. He moved his other hand over the injury to keep pressure on it. "Do you have anything to cover it? Bandage? Mud will do in a pinch."

"That would have been a thought five minutes ago!" the beast shouted, fighting hard to keep from lashing out at Blair. "I'll have to go outside again. But maybe not right now." Avi hadn't been prepared for this, but he wasn't about to let Blair know. Though he already had, in a way. Unfortunately the beast wasn't good at keeping a blank expression, and that normally got him into trouble.

Blair gave a small shrug. "There's probably more bandages in my bag. No point in you going out again." He replied. "Keep the pressure." He told the beast as he released the wound and walked back over to dig through his bag. He returned with a cotton patch with sticky adhesive on the edges and moved the creature's hand aside before he stuck it over the wound and pressed to make sure it stuck.

(legit if I don't reply just like my post like 10 times)
When Avi saw the amount of blood now staining his palms, he was both amazed and a little terrified, but simply allowed Blair to continue with his work. Truth be told he liked having someone around to help. What he didn't like was accepting it. "We have to clean this up. Now. The wolves will be here if they smell blood—mine, especially." The beast was panicked, though it barely showed in his deep voice. He was also rooted to the spot. "Have you ever fought a wolf, hunter?"

(XD Good to know)
"Yes. I can take one. But there's never just one." Blair sighed. "If we wipe it on a cloth and bury it in the snow, it should stop the scent from traveling far." He said, going back to his bag. He had a shirt he could change to, so he swapped with the one he was wearing and passed the bloodied shirt over to the beast to use. A thought hit him. What scent would the wolves catch that would draw them in? "What are you that they'd flock so quickly?" He asked.

"What am I? That's something I've wondered for centuries," Avi replied, shaking his head. "A deal with the devil that wasn't kept." It was a vague explanation, but that was all the beast could offer Blair. The rest of it...there was a long story. "Let's just say the wolves and I aren't on good terms. It's not so much what I am as it is what I did. I thought I had done the right thing." There was no sadness in his tone, no remorse, only ice, as he took the shirt from Blair. "I prefer not to be cornered."

Blair listened with a slight frown. There were labels for people who were changed by dark deals, but without knowing the details, he couldn't offer any to the creature. For now, he just waited for him to finish wiping off before he took the shirt back and started toward the cave entrance. As soon as he saw snow, he shoved the shirt into it before a breeze could carry the scent and he covered it up, packing the snow down on top of it. He looked around briefly, trying to take in the sights and sounds of the night for any sign of trouble.

(Sorry got distracted by ACT scores 😂)
Avi didn't follow Blair until he heard something suspicious outside. Tumbling rocks, normally not a concern, sounded strange, somehow. Just a feeling the beast had. Avi couldn't explain it.
"Hunter," he called from the entrance of the cave, heart pounding, "You should come back inside. We're not alone." His gaze flitted to the rocks, and though he couldn't see anything, Avi wasn't swayed. "They followed us here."

(It's all good. I'm working on a commission)
Blair scowled, a harsh glare scanning over the woods before retreating into the cave. He went toward his bag, intent on fetching something. He had an idea to keep the beasts at bay, at least until they could form a proper plan to fend them off. "Hold the line. I need to set something up." He ordered, already digging through his belongings. Cooking oil... wouldn't hold very long, but he had plenty of it. Silver scraps, enough for maybe five or six minutes... He grabbed the oil and scraps, then the flint.
