Tawnypaw gasped loudly as her head broke the water. Her paws paddled wildly, and she began to struggle and thrash slightly, not entirely aware of what was going on. All she knew was that she had to get out of the water, and as fast as she possibly could. “Twn’paw!” Owlwhisker grunted between her scruff, pulling her closer to the shore and letting her move to her own paws. Letting go, he panted out. “Tawnypaw! Relax, Tawnypaw, calm down! You’re alright!” He tried to soothe.

Tawnypaw stumbled forwards until she was fully out of the water, before collapsing onto her side, taking long, deep breaths. She whimpered quietly, beginning to heave up the lungful of river water she'd managed to inhale. Thankfully, though, she appeared to be safe - soaking wet, and exhausted, but safe.

“Starclan, are you alright?” Owlwhisker rushed after her, nosing her with concern and guilt. “It wasn’t too deep out there, even for you, I thought you would have-...nevermind that, we’ll just...we’ll take it much slower from now on.” He promised.

"My-my fur got caught," Tawnypaw panted. "I-I think it-it was... I think it was a stick or something. Dragged me underwater. I was fine until my pelt got snagged." “It’s alright.” Owlwhisker soothed. “It’s not your fault. I should have checked around for any sticks before I let you in. I won’t make that mistake again.” He promised, surprisingly serious for once.

"It isn't your fault," Tawnypaw replied. She shuffled to her paws, resisting the urge to shake herself off. "I lived alone for moons before coming to RiverClan. I should know better than to go into any situation blindly. If it wasn't for you, I'd be dead right now." “Then let’s both agree to be more responsible.” Owlwhisker nodded, not wanting her to blame herself for anything. He looked at the water and mewed. “Do you want to try again? We’ll stay in the very shallow parts. If not, we can do some fishing on the banks instead.”

"Fishing is probably better," Tawnypaw admitted, after a few moments' thought. "I need the practice, and it might be better to avoid swimming for today." She took a few steps backwards, shaking off the river water clinging to her pelt, soaking her through. “That, we can do.” Owlwhisker nodded, shaking water from his fur as he crouched on the riverbank instead. He instructed. “Remember, fishing is about keeping still, and being patient.” He started.

Tawnypaw nodded firmly, indicating that she understood. She settled herself by the riverbank, making sure her shadow didn't fall on the river, before settling down to wait. Within a few minutes, she made a catch, casting a large splash of water out of the river. It was only a minnow, though - a large minnow, but a minnow nonetheless. “See? That’s much easier.” Owlwhisker chuckled, his tail flicking sharply as he made his own catch a few moments later. He purred. “You have a very good reaction speed. You’ll certainly excel as a hunter.”

"Thanks," Tawnypaw purred. She settled herself back down, staring down at the river. She was definitely becoming a master of the thousand-mile-stare - she did it a lot for her age. She jumped slightly after a little while longer, before diving into the river head-first. A few seconds later, she resurfaced, a still-live trout writhing in her jaws as she tried desperately to hang onto it. Owlwhisker slipped in swiftly to help his apprentice with the fish, supporting her as he led them towards the bank once more. He chuckled. “Quick! Land the final blow!” He boomed dramatically.

Tawnypaw dropped the trout onto the riverbank, before bending down, biting down hard on its spine. The fish went limp, and Tawnypaw straightened back up, sighing heavily. "Well!" She remarked, looking down at her catch. "That was... intense." “Certainly more intense than usual! You keep frightening me when you slip in the water so fast.” Owlwhisker admitted. His eyes trailed over the fish as he praised. “These are great catches. Have you been practicing during your break times?”

"Yeah," Tawnypaw admitted. "I-I sometimes come down here during breaktimes and off-days to practice fishing. I'm too nervous to talk to the other apprentices, so I just train," She explained with a shrug. Training was easier than accidentally making mistakes about Clan life. Owlwhisker looked at Tawnypaw with sympathy, sitting down next to her. “You know, I can always help you talk to other cats. Sometimes you just have to take a breath and jump right in! The clan has been great to me, when I once felt the same way you did.”

"I'm just scared that I'll do something wrong," Tawnypaw mewed, looking down at the ground. "Willowpaw's already learned more about Clan life than I have. I don't want to say or do something wrong, and then never make any friends..." “The worst thing you could ever do, is stop yourself from trying something new, and from taking a chance.” Owlwhisker reminded lightly. He pressed his muzzle to Tawnypelt’s forehead, mewing supportively. “You have it in you. You just need to take that first step. Try with your denmates. Ask them how they are, if they want to train with you.”

Tawnypaw thought for a moment, before nodding silently. "Okay," She agreed. "I-I'll try to talk with them when we get back to camp later today." She had to at least give it a go, didn't she? She'd never be a real Clan cat without any friends. "That's the best thing you can do." Owlwhisker nodded with approval, moving to flick Tawnypaw's ears with his long tail. The slender Saimese tom looked at the fish then, mewing out. "Do you want to try and catch one more, or should we bring these back to camp and work on battle moves instead?"

"Let's take this catch back to camp now," Tawnypaw decided after a moment's thought. "We've caught plenty, and combined with what the rest of the Clan will have found, everybody should be well-fed. It isn't like it's the dead of Leafbare anymore, after all. Prey's not so scarce." “Very well! Once we drop these off, we can work on your back kick. I know a good move you can learn.” Owlwhisker mewed excitedly, always enjoying to teach his apprentice new moves. Minkstep’s apprenticeship had allowed him to set the base for his future mentoring, and he knew he was much better at it now.
