Sootclan was founded by a loner named Soot. Soot was an explorer and he had traveled to many places before he settled down, creating SootClan. On Soot's journeys, he came across three other groups of cats, living in what Soot saw as a paradise.  To the North was a coniferous forest (relating to or part of trees or shrubs bearing cones and evergreen leaves), where a "clan" as they called themselves Evergreenclan lived. To the East lived Vineclan, where dense shrubland dominated, with a thin river running through the land, continuing on to the west, where it got thicker. To the South was a Tundra forest that got colder the further you went in. It snowed in the coldest parts during leaffall as well as leafbare, and prey was scarce. Only the cats of Sparkclan could live here, with their thick pelts and slim bodies. Soot came to the clans after a devastating leafbare, where the clan to the West had been wiped out by sickness and famine. The remaining cats of that clan, which had been called Stoneclan, had scattered, agreeing to live as loners near the territory as they were to small and weak to be a clan anymore. Soot disagreed with the decision to just let the cats of Stoneclan die off, so he and a few other cats from the other clans went to look for the remaining Stoneclan cats. The search did not take very long, as the cats of Stoneclan had not been strong enough to go very far from their home. They were still a small clan and it took moons to restore the clan that once was. In those moons, Soot recruited other kittypets and loners that lived around the territory's . After moons of hard work the clan was restored. At the first gathering that all four clans were together again, the new leader announced that  Soot had died in a rockfall, protecting the new clan that he had created. Because of this, they had decided to name the clan Sootclan in his honor, and the four clans vowed never to forget the brave tom who had saved Sootclan from extinction. They are now known for their small, stocky builds and excellent climbing skills.

Sootclan's hunting grounds are a large taiga forest. It contains mostly of  Spruce and Larch trees with a few pine's scattered here and there. A river runs through the territory, but it freezes in leafbare so no cat can use it when it is needed most. Downstream the river flows into rapids, where large chunks of ice form in the colder seasons. Sootclans camp is hidden under the canopy of 3 large baobab  trees, providing Sootclan with dens in the roots. Sootclan uses moss and fireweed to line their nests. They also use fireweed along with brambles for the wall. The entrance is a low, very well hidden alcove of roots, that over the years SootClan cats disguised to look more like the rest of the forest. 

The four clans converse with Starclan at the Moonmeadow. It is a large meadow just outside of SootClan's territory where rare herbs grow. Medicine cats meet here every half-moon to talk with Starclan.
