“Alright, Riolu! Use tackle!” Nova said to the fighting type pokemon, pointing towards the Shinx she had encountered along Route 202, just outside of Sandgem Town. Riolu let out a cry and charged towards the Shinx, tackling it with full force. The Shinx struggled to get back to its paws, weakened significantly from the battle already. Nova pulled a pokeball out of her pocket, feeling a bit nervous about catching her first Pokémon. “Okay, here goes nothing!” She said to herself, launching the pokeball at the Shinx. She held her breath as the ball opened and pulled the Shinx in, watching nervously as the ball shook a few times before it finally stilled, “Yes! We did it, Riolu! We caught a Shinx!” Nova said happily, catching Riolu in her arms when he jumped towards her and hugged him. She ran over to the pokeball and picked it up, “Looks like we’ve got a new friend.” Lilina looked up from her spot beneath the shade of a tree. She had stopped to allow her new Turtwig a chance to rest from their training. After all, everyone knew that even with a type advantage, Devon was no pushover for the first gym battle. She had come into the league very late, having been weary of Pokemon for years until she finally built the courage to start her journey. Her attention was caught by a trainer across the way who was battling one of the Shinx. Lilina watched intently, wondering how this other girl had gotten a Riolu. |

Nova set Riolu back down on the ground and tucked the pokeball holding her newly caught Shinx into her belt, “I suppose we should start making our way to Jubilife City now, right, Riolu? We can get some rest there and pick up some supplies before we make our way to the first gym.” She said, glancing around the surrounding area. Her eyes caught sight of Lilian looking her way and blinked in surprise. Nova gave the other girl a shy smile and waved towards her, “O-oh, hello.” She said, suddenly feeling embarrassed to be overheard talking to her Pokémon like she would with a regular human.

Her eyes caught sight of Lilian looking her way and blinked in surprise. Nova gave the other girl a shy smile and waved towards her, “O-oh, hello.” She said, suddenly feeling embarrassed to be overheard talking to her Pokémon like she would with a regular human. Lilina blinked with surprise when the girl noticed her. Tucking a strand of light green hair behind her ear, she responded with her own hint of shyness, feeling a bit guilty for startling the girl. “Hello! Sorry to startle you… I just noticed that you were battling with a Riolu. I’ve never seen one around here. The Shinx, though. They’re common here.” She mused, before she lifted up her Turtwig and nodded. “This is Sage. She’s my partner.” |

My name is Nova, and this Riolu is my partner.” Nova said, picking her Riolu up and holding him close to her chest. “I’ve only just started my Pokémon journey, what about you?” She asked, feeling a bit awkward. Nova had always found it to be easier talking to Pokémon than it was to other humans, having always been fairly shy. “Just started my journey too.” Lilina admitted, placing her Turtwig down and scratching the back of her head. “I’m… not the best, at Pokemon… anything, really. I was too unsure to start younger, so. Here I am now. Oh! My name’s Lilina.” She introduced, looking at the Riolu with an awkward look. How did one go about interacting with a Riolu. She swallowed. “I’ve never caught a Pokemon before… Uhm. So. Watching you helped a bit. I think. Maybe, uh. Maybe you could help me catch one?” |

Nova blinked in surprise at the request, not having expected the other trainer to ask for her help. “Oh, sure! I can help you out. Um, is there a specific Pokémon you’re looking for then?” She asked.

Nova blinked in surprise at the request, not having expected the other trainer to ask for her help. “Oh, sure! I can help you out. Um, is there a specific Pokémon you’re looking for then?” She asked. “Thank you!” Lilina smiled, relief filling her as she nodded over towards where a few Surskit were skating across the small ponds and streams in the forest. She admitted. “I uh. Think those are Water Types, which would help alot with the first badge… I think. They’re kind of cute too. They just move so fast.” She admitted. |

Nova glanced over at the Surskit and nodded in agreement. It would be pretty smart to have a couple of water types for the first gym, “That’s a smart plan. Let’s go see if we can corner one. You’re going to want to fight it first before you try and catch it, the weaker it is, the easier it is to keep it in the pokeball.” She said, looking back at Liliana.

Good idea.” Lilina looked down at Sage and smiled. “She just learned Razor Leaf. We’ve been training alot… because she’s all I have right now.” She stood up, looking towards the Surskit before nodding. “How do you suppose we’ll corner one?” |

Really, Nova, thank you for helping me. I want to try and be the best I can be, after uh… waiting so long to start.” Lilina admitted, eyes bright with gratitude before she nodded to Sage. “Let’s get ready for a battle, okay?” The Turtwig hopped on her feet with a cry of excitement at the prospect of getting a new friend. She turned to ready herself. |

“Oh, it’s no problem! I don’t mind helping a fellow trainer out.” Nova said with a small smile. She set Riolu back down and gave him a nod. “Alright, Riolu, let’s help Liliana out, okay? You go that way and chase one of the Surskit towards Liliana. I’ll go the other way.” She told him, pointing in the opposite direction.
“Ri!” Riolu cried, turning and running off in the direction his trainer pointed. Nova looked back at Liliana, “Get ready, this shouldn’t take too long. Make sure the Surskit doesn’t see you until the last moment.” She said before turning and hurrying off. Once she was in position, she gave Riolu a signal and the blue Pokémon jumped out of its hiding spot, startling a few of the Surskit. Nova ran out next to cut off any escape and both her and Riolu started herding one of the Surskit towards Liliana.

Lilina waited until the Riolu had corralled one of the Surskit towards her. With a breath of anticipation, she extended her arm and called out. “Now you face me, Surskit! Er… Uhm, I don’t want to hurt you, just! Let me catch you, okay?” She pleaded.
Confused by the girl’s odd request, the Surskit skated to a halt in front of the Turtwig, only to give a small noise as the Turtwig sent a Razor Leaf his way. The Surskit dodged the first few leaves, before he was overwhelmed by the attack. As usual for such an early route, the little bug couldn’t handle a strong grass move like that, and skitted to the ground, easily defeated.
“Oh! I’m so sorry! Did we over do it?!” Lilina squeaked, feeling bad for the poor thing.

“Quick! Throw the pokeball before it gets its second wind! You’re doing great!” Nova called out to Liliana, having watched from a distance. Her Riolu nodded in agreement, moving over to stand next to his trainer.

Yeah, right!” Lilina stammered, quickly scrambling to get out one of her Pokeballs, before lining up her aim and throwing it at the Surskit with an apologetic grunt. The Surskit glowed red for a moment before being pulled into the Pokeball. It shook one, twice, three times, before it clicked with a secure capture. Lilina blinked with surprise. That… that wasn’t so bad! She hesitated, breathing. “Is… that it? I did it, right?” |

I like that name.” She smiled, before she admitted. “I best get Skipper to the Pokemon Center. Sage too. She’s worked hard today.” Lilina looked at Nova then, looking curious and a bit hopeful. “Are you headed to Jubilife City as well? If you’d like, uhm. We could go together. I know how to get there.” |

“Really? You want me to travel with you?” Nova asked in surprise, suddenly feeling shy again. “I would like to go with you, if that’s alright with you. I was about to head that way before I met you.” She added. It would probably be best to travel with someone, especially since Liliana knew the way to the city. Nova had been terrified that she would get lost on the way.

Nova had been terrified that she would get lost on the way. “Sure! I mean- yes, that would be fine.” Lilina exclaimed, composing herself. She had wanted to find a traveling partner for a while now, and Nova seemed like she knew what she was doing. That was just fine with Lilina! After all, she had two Pokemon now thanks to her. “It’s not far. We can get your Shinx healed too. This way.” She pointed down a forested path, before she started forwards. Sage trotted at her side, surprisingly speedy for a Turtwig. |

I hear that’s where most trainer’s tend to get their first Pokémon partner.” She said, trying to make some small talk. “Yes, I did. A few days ago.” Lilina nodded, looking down at Sage with a small smile. “Professor Aspen was very kind. I could tell he was in a bit of a hurry to get somewhere, but I was told that’s very common.” She giggled a bit. “I like Grass Pokemon. And I know that one day, Sage could become a big Torterra, and that makes me feel very safe.” She admitted. “And, well. Sage was just too cute for me not to pick her.” Sage gave a delighted noise, butting her head affectionately against Lilina’s leg as they walked. “What about you? Does your Riolu have a nickname? Did you start with a Pokemon from the Professor too?” Lilina asked. |

Nova gave a shake of her head, looking down at her Riolu and giving him a smile, “No, I’m afraid I’m not very good at coming up with nicknames for my Pokémon.” She said, looking back at Liliana, “And I actually found Riolu when he was still in his egg. He had been left all on his own, so I took him in and hatched him myself. I still haven’t met the Professor just yet.” “Oh! So you’re going all solo on the league, then?” Lilina blinked, intreauged by what Nova was telling her. “I guess there’s no rule saying you have to start with a Pokemon from the Professor… but, if we run into him, I can ask if he’ll give you the starting stuff, like the badge case, all that.” She pulled out her Pokedex with a smile, opening it. “Professor Aspen asked me to fill this up as much as I can.” She pointed it towards Nova’s Riolu and grinned as new data was entered into it. “Thank you!” |

Does it give information like it’s said to do?” She asked. Truthfully, Nova hadn’t even thought that she would need to see Professor Aspen before she had set out on her journey. But then again, she wasn’t exactly supposed to be on her journey in the first place.

But then again, she wasn’t exactly supposed to be on her journey in the first place. “That’s right! Take a look.” Lilina invited, holding the Pokedex out to Nova and tapping Riolu’s icon. A screen of information appeared, including a text description of common information about Riolu as a species. The Pokedex spoke the information out loud, making it easier to read in the passing sunlight. “It’s really fun to read all the new entries. Uhm… I haven’t caught alot of Pokemon, but I have seen alot.” She scrolled through all the Pokemon she had seen on the past few routes. |

It helps me see what typing Pokemon are, what they like to eat, what their cries sound like.” Lilina nodded, gushing over her Pokedex, as she greatly enjoyed doing research. Maybe one day, she could be a Professor like Professor Aspen. Even so, she focused back on Nova. “If you want to use it, feel free to, I need to scan Skipper when we get to the Pokemon Center.” |

“I wouldn’t want to be a bother.” Nova said, not wanting to take advantage of Liliana’s kindness. “So, do you have any plans once we reach Jubilife City? Besides going to the Pokémon center that is. I was thinking I could pick up some supplies from the Pokémart while I was there.” She had already encountered a couple of trainers on her way and had also earned enough to get her a few more potions and pokeballs.

I was thinking I could pick up some supplies from the Pokémart while I was there.” She had already encountered a couple of trainers on her way and had also earned enough to get her a few more potions and pokeballs. “Plans? Well, I guess stocking up like you, and heading right for Oreburgh City. That’s where the first Badge is after all. They say Devon has Pokemon that were brought back to life!” Lilina exclaimed, looking both nervous and excited at the same time. “But, uh. I’ll have to train a bit in the Oreburgh mines before I try to fight him. With Grass and Water on my side, no rock stands a chance!” She smiled. |

“I wonder how they managed to bring Pokémon back to life, that is amazing!” Nova gushed, wanting to see the Pokémon for herself now. “I plan on going that way next as well. Um.. would you perhaps like to keep traveling with me, since we’re heading the same way? I hear that most trainers tend to stick together in small groups.” She suggested tentatively, hoping that Liliana would agree.
