"I'd offer to provide you some warmth but, uh. That would sound a bit awkward..." Weaselstride shrugged with a hint of the aforementioned awkwardness she thought about. She glanced at him once, before she admitted. "You could always hide out in the medicine den, I'm sure Dawnshadow would let you hide out to avoid a chill."
Cobblepaw noticed Snailpaw looking around, and the mottled tom lifted his tail to wave to them. He mewed. "Psst! Snailpaw! Over here! I found a dry spot in the gorse wall. You look like you're a whole cat heavier under all that water!" He chuckled, humored but friendly.

Palegaze chuckled, charmed by her slight awkwardness. Boldly, he scooted closer, enough to feel some of the warmth from her pelt. "We're Clanmates and denmates, Weaselstride," he said. "I don't find it awkward at all."
He shook his head at her suggestion. "Ah, I wouldn't want to bug her. I'm plenty dry here."

It was nice to have him close, even though she had never much enjoyed anyone else's presence. It didn't make her belly flutter like Soarshadow and Antbite talked about all the time, but it was a nice feeling, simple closeness and comfort from a cat she had found herself becoming more content with. She decided not to try and decipher it into some complexity. It was nice to just... be here. "Well. You and I are a bit different in that regard... but I'm glad I can offer you this assistance." Her whiskers twitched a bit as she allowed him to press to her side.

"Differences are what make life interesting!" Palegaze said lightly, bending to lick at the sodden fur on his shoulders. "I'm glad too. I was about to turn into a lump of ice over here."
Palegaze watched as the rain drummed against the sandy floor of the camp, eyes half-shut. He enjoyed Weaselstride's company; unusual for him.

Weaselstride was silent for a moment, taking in Palegaze's words with careful consideration, before she looked up at the tom again. While most cats were rather tense in the presence of his unique features and eyes, she found that she rather liked that he looked different. It made it easy to spot him amongst the Clan. She flicked her tail.
"Well, that's the last thing we need. I doubt you'd want to spend the next moon coughing and sneezing."

"Oh, absolutely not! I've had enough of smelling herbs with that poultice on my face for a whole quarter-moon," Palegaze snorted, gesturing to the large scar on his face. "Besides, even if I'm not a senior tunneler yet, I still need to help with Eclipsesky's training, and Beanpaw's of course!"
He tilted his head to look down at her. "And...we haven't gone tunneling together yet."
He held her gaze for a second before looking away with an awkward cough. Why did he say that?! "So, yeah. Um. Lots to do, can't be sick."

Weaselstride was a bit stunned at that, but she quickly offered a casual smile. “Well then. We’ll just have to go tunneling together soon. As for Eclipsesky, I’m guessing he’s chosen to try being a tunneler?” She asked, knowing how important Eclipsesky was to Palegaze.

Palegaze relaxed, relieved she didn't seem to catch his fluster. "Yes, like his mother before him," he said. "Lavendersun loved the tunnels. Also, he's super small, so he can really get in there," he chuckled. He looked away into the rain, his demeanor deflating a little. "It'll be hard for him, to change paths like this. But I hope I can help see him through it."

Blacktail always made it look so easy, to do both, but my grandfather and uncle were driven on seeing Dashclaw be like them. The disappointment they had in him…” She narrowed her eyes with a stern anger. “Stupid. I’m glad he’s a Moor-Runner again, I don’t care if me and Antbite are tunnelers and he isn’t. He’s never judged us for being tunnelers when he and my mother were moor-runners. That’s how it should be.” She mumbled.

Palegaze twitched an ear at her intensity. "...You're right. There shouldn't be a divide, we're all WindClan cats."
"You know, I was initially apprenticed as a moor-runner. It makes sense; my mother was an excellent runner, and I have a nearly identical build," he said. He shook his head. "But I couldn't do it. I was fast enough, agile enough; but my pelt..." he shrugged. "Well. Pansyfoot switched to train as a tunneler when I did. You know the rest."

I do wish I could have known her too.” Weaselstride admitted lightly as she looked at Palegaze, before she mused. “And… I’m glad that you switched, in this instance. If it made you happier, and that the Tunnelers are lucky enough to have you.” She admitted honestly.

Palegaze smiled, touched by her sincerity. "She was," he said softly. "I'm glad, too. Looking at it now, I can't imagine myself anywhere but where I am now."
Belatedly, Palegaze realized he was no longer shivering. In fact, he felt rather warm.

Palegaze's whole demeanor flipped as soon as his apprentice was brought up.
"Stars above that kit is adorable," he said with a snort. "I know I shouldn't focus on that, but it's true. He's got such a personality and is so determined to do his best. He listens so intently, and is genuinely excited about the learning process. Poor thing would probably jump at his own shadow, though we can work on that. He's been a delight to train so far, especially after..." Palegaze shook himself, trying not to think of his previous apprentice. "Ah, sorry. My words got away from me. I never thought I'd enjoy mentoring this much."

“I’m sure it’s a great feeling. Not that I’ll know anytime soon, seeing as I just earned my name… but I’m glad Beanpaw has made such an impression on you. He’s my kin after all.” Weaselstride’s muzzle quirked up with a hint of mellow humor at how excited Palegaze got.

(this is pretty late sob) (It’s okay!) Cobblepaw waited for Snailpaw to join him before he hummed. “Besides the gathering drama from yesterday, there’s not much. It’s likely though that my siblings and I will have our assessments soon…” He seemed to trail off, lost in thought at the statement.

"Ah, that must be why I've grown so attached to him," Palegaze responded casually, internally throwing himself into the gorge for speaking without thinking. He cleared his throat, bewildered as to where his silver tongue had run off to. "A-anyways, I'm sure you'll be a fantastic mentor once it's your turn!"

Weaselstride was a bit surprised by Palegaze’s words, trying to decipher exactly what he meant. Was he… referring to being attached to her? She expected to feel exasperated about that, yet all she could feel was a gently pleasant curiosity. She shuffled her paws lightly. “You know, if I were my brothers, I’d think you were soft on me.” She mewed, blunt but faintly humored, a bit bewildered.

Palegaze flushed from ears to tail-tip, something falling into place. He looked away, embarrassed but knowing she wasn't wrong. "Ah, those two will make a moon out of a tail flick," he chuckled, deflecting. "How's all that going? I saw Soarshadow went out on a hunt with Ivyvine, you know."

This kind of thing was not her strong suit anyway. “Soarshadow’s a helpless romantic for any decent looking tom that passes his way. Ivyvine especially, he’s mooned over him since we were young apprentices. I never understood it but. I guess he felt pretty strongly about him, and never stopped.”

"Well, I mind it. If you're going to be taking care of them, they need to appreciate you." Copperkit replied stubbornly. "I'll always protect you. And I'll be really good at it when we grow up and I'm a tunneler!" She promised. Clovekit gave a light purr. “Thank you, Copperkit. I know you’ll keep me safe.” She blinked a few times before she mewed softly. “I want to know how much papa will tell us. I don’t like it when he’s sad.” She thought of Brownleaf, and each of his many visits. "I wish he had told us before." Copperkit replied, thinking of all the times they asked about their mother and how Brownleaf would deflect their questions. As much as she loved Ashsong, she would have liked to have her father's comfort when she learned about Meadowbrook. "I wonder what made him love her so much, if she really was that bad."

She knew that their father was loving and kind. Surely he would not have loved their mother had he known of her apparent deeds beforehand. “Maybe we should… ask him again. For the truth.”

Palegaze nudged her. "Bet you a whole rabbit they're officially mates before the next Gathering," he snickered. “You know good and well you’ll be getting a rabbit with that bet. Well. Unless Ivyvine can’t read the signs. Soarshadow’s theatric like that. He’d want the thrill of a whirlwind romance with plenty of soft drama.” Weaselstride scoffed with a tiny grin.

Palegaze laughed, full and deep. "All right, you got me! I just want a rabbit," he meowed to Weaselstride. He'd dried significantly between the warmth of her fur and the overhang of the den, but the rain just keep falling in sheets, the wind whipping it across the moor.
