I've wanted to make a thread like this for a while and I'm procrastinating rn so seems as good a time as any. Anyway I wanted to make a space for anyone who does any kind of handicrafts to post about what crafts they do and their current projects, and if some people do the same crafts we can maybe discuss techniques or people can ask craft questions?
I've been a crafter most of my life and there's very few standard crafts I haven't dabbled in at some point or other, but I'm most experienced in knitting and crochet. Also make a variety of miniatures, but that's mostly self-guided and I claim no expertise lol. I work as a manager with one of the big chain craft stores so it's also something I'm in proximity with all the time.
My current main projects include a giant knitted blanket commission that I kind of hate because both the yarn and the selected stitch annoy me, a thankfully much simpler and smaller crocheted afghan I'm making just to relax, and my first ever pair of knit socks. In non-yarn crafts, I have a dress pinned that I need to actually get around to sewing, a cross-stitch i've been working on for several years that may never be completed, a half-constructed miniature room, and a polymer clay model of a love death and robots character that i keep scrapping and reattempting.
So yeah, what kind of crafts do people do? What are you currently working on?

I'm currently trying to sew plushies of Chibi versions of my characters, who happen to have anime designs. Partly to help promote my stories, but mostly because I want to hug and squish cute versions of my beloved characters. This is one my mother and I made together. There's a lot of things wrong with her--some of the fabric material isn't the best, she's too big, her legs are too long, her proportions, especially her head, is a little off, and several other mistakes, but all in all, for my very first try, this plush didn't come out too bad! She's technically not one of my characters because she's more of a prototype test, but once I get better, I will hopefully be able to sew my own characters as Chibi plushies! Also, can you tell I'm a My Little Pony fan?

oooo this thread may be a really good way to motivate me into get back into my hobbies. it has been a few months since I've done them, but I crochet and knit! I've also been wanting to get into sewing, but I haven't found the time to learn a completely new skill (I may start hunting for some dress patterns tho). I'm waiting right now to get a new knitting set, and I want to start learning how to make cableknit sweaters because they are farrrr too expensive lol

Twilight Sparkle aw she's super cute! I like the little bows on her shoes c: how did you make her hair? the layering effect is nice. and your mlp collection is fun lol it's been a while since I watched the show but I do remember Rarity was always my favorite.
Saint Ambrosef that's cool, vintage clothing always looks so pretty! Do you have a favorite piece you've made?
VIXENCLAW yes I'm hopeful this place motivates folks to work on their stuff or try new things! or in my case it's kind of for accountability (I need to finish the nightmare blanket 🤦). also yay another fiber artist! i feel like people treat cable knitting as a really difficult technique but I'd say it's not that bad to get the hang of. Though I've only made smaller cable pieces (scarves/hats), with sweaters you have to throw in garment shaping which makes everything more difficult lol.

anyway I've made no progress on anything originally listed but I did bake a pistachio cream cake for an occasion and it turned out pretty good, esp for gluten free baking. that kind of counts as a craft? craft stores have bakeware/decoration departments, it's a craft 😤
now i need to stop getting distracted by projects i could be doing and focus more on what i already have in progress. primarily the blanket commission.

Thank you! Her hair is made out of felt. The bangs are little spikey pieces of felt that was hot glued to her head. I think next time my mother and I make a plush, we'll try a softer material for the hair, maybe something like minky. Felt works fine, but it's not soft to the touch. And yeah, MLP: FiM rocks! Twilight, Sunset, and Rarity are my favorite characters. Rarity would approve of this thread lol.

I've made a couple among us crewmate plushies with minky and it worked nice as a textured fabric, it would probably work pretty well for hair! Might be a little more difficult to wrangle into place without extra stitching though.
I don't remember Sunset, not sure I made it to her introduction. Forget where exactly I stopped, maybe after season 2 or 3.

I learned crochet later and honestly even though I've made some decently advanced crochet projects it still feels like I haven't learned it properly because I can never remember even basic stitches. Feel like I have to re-teach myself what a half double crochet is every time I start something new.
And I feel you on getting emotionally attached to projects, I struggle letting anything I make go, even the complete disasters ;-;

Did a little bit of work on Nightmare Blanket. Progress is slow, it takes like 20-30 minutes to knit a row and i am tired ;-;
the socks are a nice distraction because the rows go super fast but i feel guilty working on anything that isn't the blanket lol

Bridesmaid dresses are a wild first project, props to you. I've picked through some formal gown patterns and they're not easy. I've only made a few garments myself too, but they've all been loose-fitting things with very little structure.
I've been hand-sewing bags/small quilts for a while but I finally made the jump to machine sewing because of the pandemic (lots of cloth face-mask requests). I was honestly very afraid of sewing machines for a long time and I still kind of am (have heard way too many horror stories about fingers run through with needles), but I'd like to work my way up to making myself more clothes as well c: both general wear and because I'd kind of like to cosplay lol
I looked up 30s wideleg pants, they do look really cool! Big fan of any kind of more flared pantlegs tbh they look nice and also are just generally more comfortable.

hello,,, i dont usually make much, but since im getting more into cosplay, i want to make my own props and such and i already have a question! i want to make an angel halo that is attached to a clip or similar rather than being attached to a headband as i will be wearing a wig and i dont want to make it super obvious it's attached to the wig. any tips on what materials i can probably use?
|
|
|
Post by *Ɗαɾƙρσσℓ* on Apr 25, 2023 19:22:24 GMT -5
Hm I guess it kind of depends on the structure of the halo? and whether it's supposed to sit above your head or kind of frame it? If it's just supposed to be a floating circle attached to a clip maybe wire wrapping the clip and making a wire stem to attach to the halo would work, provided the halo is made out of something like craft foam cord or a thin metal band that's not too heavy. If it's a clip at the back of the head that sits closer to the hair you probably have more options for how to attach it but I still can't think of much besides painted craft foam to make the actual halo out of.

Finally finished a Chibi plushie I was working on with my mom! She turned out very good, except her face and eyes are a little bit off, but oh well. This is only the second plush I've ever made so fingers crossed that I'll improve. Still, I think she ended up well! It feels so cool to bring one of my characters to life. Meet Princess Harmony! One picture of her front, one of her back, one of her size compared to my hand, and one compared to the first plush I ever made alongside my mom. Note the dramatic size difference, haha. (I'll also make a separate thread about this)

Oh gosh she's so much smaller than the first one lol she's super cute! Thank you! Yeah, the first one was way too big, over one foot tall. The new plush is about 7(ish) inches tall. I actually forget her exact height, but it's definitely closer to the average Chibi plush size.

I actually sewed a dress! It was from pre-smocked dress fabric so the easiest project ever basically. BUT I had leftover fabric from shortening the skirt so I used it to add on straps and a pocket. I wanna post a photo but this place does not make adding pictures easy lol

Seamstress, sewer, and sewist are all technically correct I believe. I think sewist is the most fun lol
But imma try to get a nice pic of the dress and post it at some point. I also just don't take pictures very often so the only one I currently have is a poorly angled mirror selfie that doesn't show the dress off too well.

I finally dug up a picture of the bridesmaid dresses I made! Very proud of the results! There were actually two, one for each bridemaid. The skirt is chiffon layered over a cotton blend, gives it a nice shimmery effect. The bodice is the same cotton blend with a lace layered on top. Idk if you can tell in the picture but the sleeves are just the lace. You can't see the back in this picture, but it's just a simple V-shape to a zipper. Easiest back to do (other than straight straps), since other designs require a more custom back fit. Also do you know how hard it is to make a custom fit dress when both wearers live over 3 hours away from you?? I only got one chance to have them try on mock-ups 😩 Luckily both of them are similarly sized to me, albeit differing proportions, so I could kinda try stuff on myself to make sure it at least wasn't radically off the mark.

i've made a bunch of bracelets in the last week. Started with doing a few in some pink beads for the barbie movie and then i just kept going lol past that am also attempting to knit some drawstring shorts that i'm drafting the pattern for as I go. this is the kind of project that is either wildly successful or a failure that I abandon halfway through. we'll see!
