In an effort to find the murderer, guards are placed in every den and the clan stays awake in rotating shifts. Waspstar also starts reinforcing the walls of their camp to make sure no one could sneak in. Her clan was falling apart due to these deaths and they were getting no where to stopping it. Webseed was at a loss as well. Waspstar tried asking him if StarClan had any messages but the tom's outsider background had always made it difficult for him to connect and now that he was the sole medicine cat, he was sorry to say he received no guidance from them.

Cloverleaf becomes distant after the deaths of two of her kits, especially Skykit who had been born dead like herself. She begins to stop eating, refusing prey and saying the warriors need it more as they’re at risk of being killed.

While the clan's low numbers were grim, it has been a blessing in disguise after a famine strikes the clans as a result of the forest fire. With less mouths to feed, they were doing a little better. Deaths are reported from their neighbors and it seems as though the murders have stopped for now. Waspstar forgoes some of her meals to allow the others to eat more, specifically Smokekit who Cloverflower was growing increasingly protective over. Even Ashstripe wasn't allowed too close to him.

Because Waspstar was forgoing too many meals, she loses a life from starvation. Ferretpurr nearly has a miscarriage, but Spotcloud noticed, and the kits were saved. Spotcloud himself, started to force-feed Ferretpurr when necessary, since she didn't want to eat more than her fair share. He didn't want to lose this litter.

Ferretpurr cannot wait out on the nursery any longer as she enters labor suddenly while setting up patrols. She gives birth to two kits although both are sickly due to the lack of food. Ferretpurr almost dies from the birth but Webseed manages to save her. Privately, he warns Spotcloud that she may not have long for the world unless the clan gets some more prey.

Smokekit becomes an apprentice despite Cloverflower wanting him to stay in the nursery for longer. To try and reassure her, Waspstar trains him personally. The whole event seemed to drive Cloverflower and Ashstripe's relationship to the brink and the two have not been seen talking to each other in a while. The rest of the clan soon believe that they may stop being mates altogether.

Spotcloud comes back looking a little roughed up but triumphantly carrying a fat chicken he had caught from a barn. He said that they could probably sneak off some more prey if they were careful but the guard dog had gave him a scare. Thanks to Spotcloud's scouting, the clan would try to catch a young chicken once a moon. Any more frequent and they might risk the ire of the twolegs there. With that extra food, the clan manages to get past the famine without any more losses although Badgerleaf got one of his eyes scratched and blinded by the angry rooster.

(Time to get rid of the incest! It gets really bad when it’s not watched carefully, as in I’ve had to chart a family tree and have seen littermates have kits together among other things and I’d rather nip any accidental inbreeding in the bud.)
Streamkit and Beekit go missing. Beekit is later found that day, crying from atop a low tree branch. Blood and fox-scent cover the base of the tree and scraps of blue-gray fur also covers the area. The patrol that finds the young tom then must be the bearers of bad news and that Streamkit has been killed by a fox.
Feathercall blames Pebblefire for not having looked after their only kit. Ferretpurr senses there is likely more rage for his parents and Clan’s failure for not having found him as a kit but feels her input might just make things worse.

With Shadowwolf still gone at the twolegplace, Waspstar takes Feathercall and Poppyshade with her to investigate the strange scents. They eventually find a gruesome sight. Outside the border and close to where the kits had been attacks, there appeared to be piles of crowfood leading straight into their borders. Someone had led the fox right to them. Feathercall insisted on figuring out who it was but Waspstar knew that they could not afford the cats to go off on a dangerous mission - not yet at least. They hoped that Shadowwolf would return with recruits soon.
