Nightcatcher is finally deemed well enough by Moonbranch to return to her regular duties. However, a badly set paw causes her to have a permanent limp in her gait. She does not let it deter her and she is back to her usual self very quickly.

In the short time that he has stayed here, the clan considers Eelsplash and Reedkit pleasant additions to the clan. The tom is respectful and obedient albeit a bit standoffish and distant. Many assume he was still struggling with the grief of losing his mate. He gets along surprisingly well with Waspclaw. Reedkit on the other hand is a very happy go lucky kit. She's a bit lonely now that she's the only kit left in the nursery but Ferretpurr was going to give birth any day now and she was excited to meet them. No one was ready to tell her that she probably wouldn't get to no them for long before they returned for ValleyClan.

Eelsplash and Reedkit leave to return to ValleyClan. The distant tom’s goodbyes to Waspclaw are the longest but it is clear he is grateful for DarkClan’s help. Reedkit appears upset at having to say goodbye to DarkClan but also appears to be looking forward to returning to ValleyClan.

While out hunting, Maggotpaw is hit by a monster. Swanflight is also hit while trying to save her apprentice. Her efforts were in vain as he was killed on impact while she is left critically injured, her forelegs twisted. The two are found by a patrol of by Heronflame, Badgerleaf, Heronpaw, and Sweeteeth. Swanflight is rushed to the medicine cat’s den by her father but even he is uncertain if she will survive.

Swanflight doesn't survive, leaving Webseed, Shadowwolf, Problem and Dewskip distraught. Due to the trauma, Problem gives birth prematurely to three kits- Poolkit, Poppykit and Puddlekit. It is not known if they will survive.

Heronpaw and Hillpaw find a sickly stranger from the twolegplace, around their age. She had a bad cough and patches of her fur had fallen off with itchy irritated skin underneath. She had had heard that clan cats had healers so she was asking for some help, especially since it seemed that there was an outbreak of this particular disease in the twolegplace. Wanting to help, Hillpaw immediately goes to fetch Moonbranch while Heronpaw kept her company by the border. Moonbranch is a bit puzzled but knows that coughs were probably contagious and doesn't let her in camp, much to the apprentice's displeasure. After discussing it with Duskstar and Webseed, they ask her to stay outside by close enough so that the medicine cats could periodically visit. Webseed would visit her the next day, seeing as he had more experience with stranger diseases.

Webseed is concerned when he realized the progression of her illness. He has heard of this disease before but he hadn't know a cure unfortunately. He said that when kittypets got it, they were sent to the cutter. Those who were not so fortunate were weakened severely or died. It could bring ruin if an outbreak started in the clan so when Splashtalon and Sweettooth both started coughing, they were quarantined immediately. Moonbranch and Webseed could only try to ease their coughs with tansy and spare catmint and gave them as much prey as they could spare and hoped they kept up their appetites.

The clan begins to adapt strict rules on who can interact with the sick cats. Only the medicine cats are allowed to enter their makeshift camp to bring them prey and herbs. While Webseed was trying to think of treatment for them, Heronpaw begins to build a friendship with the stranger and finds out that she had been a kittypet before she was abandoned by her housefolk. Her neighbor who caught it before her was given some foul liquid to drink by their housefolk and it made him better and now refused to let him out of the twolegnest. Webseed hears this and wants to ask around the twolegplace if anyone had found an alternative, maybe a herb with the same effects. Moonbranch and his kin are warry as the outbreak started at the twolegpalce in the first place and he might get sick as well.

The clan is in a chaotic state. Both the outbreak and the mysterious death of Jaypaw had got everyone on edge. Heronflame and Heatherblaze are snappish and and accuse everyone who even mentions their son's name. Webseed in more insistent that they let him go seek a cure, especially after a coughing Birchleaf joins the infected in the quarantine camp. Duskstar offers to take Webseed's place in the moving of herbs and prey, reasoning that he had still some extra lives in him so he was the most expendable. With that, even against Shadowwolf's judgement, Webseed goes off in search of a cure.

With the leader and medicine cats busy to mediate, Dewskip is the sole position of power left that tries to keep Heronflame and Heatherblaze calm. They have settled to accuse just Mistywater of murdering their son for the sole reason of her being the newest joiner, thus making her teh most suspicious. Without evidence, Dewskip cannot simply punish her but it seems she had done it for him. In the dead of night, Mistywater runs away. The parents say that her escape is a sign of guilt and now the rest of the clan is inclined to believe the same.
