Webseed recognizes that Wolfclaw has Rabies. The medicine cats make a temporary den for him outside of camp though they don’t know how to cure it. Webseed says she saw some cats getting cured around the twoleg place so she’ll check it out tomorrow

As the kits' apprentice ceremony draws nearer, Ferretpurr and Spotcloud convince Duskstad that Cloverkit was perfectly capable of handling herself. She had learned the sign language well and was a focused kit. The leader decided to have her train under the gentle Badgerleaf while Swanpaw went to Windflame.

Even though they were prepared, the battle was bloody. Snookdusk, Windflame, Archheart, and Whistlepool all died while Nightcatcher and Cloverpaw sustained bad injuries. Duskstar also lost a life. They were able to drive off the rogues, though. Swanpaw’s new mentor is Whisperstream.

Now that the threat is over, the clan is looking at both Russetnose and Waspclaw. Waspclaw fought valiantly during the battle and is welcomed back to the clan but Russetnose did too much damage during his time as leader. He is asked to leave and he does not argue against it, thanking everyone for believing him one last time. Moonbranch and Blizzardwind are curious about where he would go now and discover that he found twolegs to take care of him.

As the time for him to give birth soon approaches, Webseed is told by Duskstar and Moonbranch that this must be his last litter if he wants to stay a medicine cat. While his experience was invaluable, the medicine cat code still dictates that a medicine cat cannot have kits. With that in mind, he moves into the nursery and is left to think about the future of his role.

Without his role as medicine cat, Webseed isn't sure what he can do in the clan. Shadowwolf, noticing Webseed's dilemma, tries to talk to him, but the tom isn't very responsive to his efforts.

Webseed finds some comfort not just with his mate but also with the current batch of kits that was making the nursery so crowded. Hillkit in particular seems the most interested in his stories, not only of their past outside the clan but of their experience as a healer. If he could not give up a future family, then he would be glad to help guide a possible replacement. He talks to Moonbranch about Hillkit's interest.

Duskstar is one of the oldest cats in the clan now and it is showing. He complains about his joints and a pain in his side but the medicine cats can do little when he spams in his sleep and loses a life.

It's been some moons now, and no signs of Hootkit. The clan eventually gives up on finding the kit, deeming him dead.
