Fireclan attacks Darkclan because of the raid. They kill Acornwatcher who was trying to protect Web and the kits. Web's profession as a healer comes in handy, as he had some deadly nightshade on hand. Sinking his claws into them, he scratches the Fireclan warriors with his poisoned claws, which although isn't much, causes the Fireclan cats to back away. They don't know what may happen if they are scratched by claws covered in the highly toxic berry juice. Web was able to fend off the Fireclan warriors from the nursery.

Upon the discovery that the FireClan cat she was in love with had been part of the attack, Ferretpurr starts to rethink her feelings for Spotcloud. She is worried about her friend after his injury and especially worried about the state of the clan's herb supply. Two big battles happening so closely to one another meant that their stocks were low and her sister Creekmoon often asked for help looking for herbs.

Web's methods are strange and use herbs not found in clan territory but the medicine cats both see its effectiveness, especially in times with low resources. With his help and a few out of therritory expeditions, Spotcloud is back in full health and returns to his duties. Ferretpurr starts talking to him more and the too soon become mates.

With high numbers, DarkClan is able to ward off any remaining FireClan patrols. However, having more mouths to feed makes the clan think about expanding their territory. FireClan, who has caused them much anguish before, is the prime target. The next gathering shows that DarkClan was not the only one to suffer during the floods. FireClan arrived led by their deputy, announcing that their leader was feeling unwell and deflecting any other questions. Leopardeye, who was still on friendly terms with his mother, informed her that the FireClan leader had been swept away by the flood and the clan was desperately finding any signs of life or at least a body to bury. Since DarkClan territory was the most affected, he asked if she could keep an eye out in case they were swept out in that direction.

Although all the clan is prepping for the future battle, Rowangrass steps down as deputy and retires, just like she said after training her apprentice. Joining her in the elders' den is Spotcloud. The tom had recovered from his injuries but it took a great toll on his lungs and he is too weak to do proper duties so he retires early. Dewskip is named the new deputy.

While FireClan refused to join the battle, they did manage to locate the body of their leader with the help of a passing DarkClan patrol. Their deputy awknowledges the help and, although clearly they didn't want to, they thank the clan by allowing them to have a portion of their territory, thus eliminating the need for further violence so soon.
