A starving fox is chased by TroutClan towards DarkClan territory on accident. It catches Dustsnout off guard while she was out gathering herbs. She is thrown against a boulder and left unconcious before a hunting patrol rushes to help her.

The fox makes another appearance stealing freshly caught prey from the new apprentices. Too young to fight back, the three hide in a thorn bush while their mentors chase the fox away for now. After the clan realizes it was TroutClan's fault for sending the fox their way, Brookstar and Smokepetal debate on trying to send it back over to their side.

The newest warrior Sunflight is not handling the shock of having to kill Brookstar, his grandmother, after witnessing her kill several of his clanmates. While being proud of his skill in battle as an apprentice, he had never expected to lay a claw on his clanmates, not to mention his own leader and kin. He is often distracted or skittish and it is rubbing off on Tawnypaw's training. The young apprentice has taken to being very bold and independent but also foolhardy and attention-seeking, sneaking off under her mentor's nose to do who knows what.

Ruddystar is conflicted, having been part of a batch of recruits from the twolegplace. He knew there were good cats living in comfort that could have the heart of a warrior if given the chance but he also knew that a young feral like Tawnypaw would be easy prey to the dangers found in the twolegplace. He surprises her and the rest of the clan by changing her mentor - Goosepounce would be the one to continue her training. Sunflight felt a little ashamed at having failed his first apprentice but also relieved to not have the responsibility anymore.

Ruddystar falls ill and the medicine cats suspect it might be infection in his lungs due to his heavy cough and trouble breathing. He loses a life from it and is left to rest for several days. Stuck in recovery, he does not notice the relationship between his senior medicine cat and the warrior but Spiderjaw sure does. He warns his former mentor about sticking to the code although he does not push it.

Driftleaf acknowledges Spiderjaw, but can't help it, and Tulipwater falls pregnant. Unable to tell the clan who the father is, Tulipwater and Driftleaf have a big fight, as Tulipwater wants to tell, but Driftleaf doesn't want to stop being a medicine cat, and so they break up.

Driftleaf is firm in his decision to break off the relationship, being particularly cold to Tulipwater and leaving Spiderjaw with nursery duty. Sunflight is surprisingly helpful during these trips, having taken to assisting the medicine cats this entire time. He has slowly learned herblore and he has taken over fixing dens and maintaining the camp walls and he finds that he appreciates this more relaxed lifestyle than that of a regular warrior.
