Otterpaw encounters the stranger who looks like her at the border who looks at her strangely and asks how old she was. The apprentice was confused as she was not told by Doepool and Bristlefur that she had been found as a kit so she did what she was taught to do: warn the stranger to stay away from DarkClan. Her mentor eventually finds her and the stranger quickly leaves but the encounter made Otterpaw curious.

Squirrelbloom finds three kits who happen to be Feather's (grandchild of Fishtide) kits. Feather was found dead nearby, her mate nowhere to be found. Squirrelbloom brings them back to camp. She was thinking Goldenpoppy and Havenskip might want to adopt them.

Ruddystar's lungs do not seem to recover smoothly and the leader's voice has become hoarse and his breathing labored. While it doesn't seem to be greencough like the medicine cats fear, he still loses a life from it.

Vixenkit succumbs to her injuries. With no queens to take care of the remaining kits especially when Ruddystar's litter had not yet been fully weened, the clan is forced to ask for help from their neighbors. Luckily, TroutClan had a queen who just gave birth. Although he didn't want to be separated from them, Ruddystar could not leave to watch over them with his leader duties so his daughter Doepool volunteers to stay in FireClan as well. Driftleaf once again pushes away his feelings when his kit, now assumed orphaned, leaves with the rest of them.

Ruddystar's age gets the better of him as he was climbing up a tree one day. With too weak a grip, he slips off a branch and bashes his head against a root, killing him. Now on his last life, he decides to retire and return to being Ruddypelt as an elder. Goosestar names Jaysnout as the new deputy after Bristlefur says he was too old for the position.
