hyperfixations are an adhd symptom, special interests are an autism symptom ^^ there is definitely a lot of overlap especially if you're autistic and have adhd, but hyperfixations tend to be a faster cycle - obsession with the thing where you can't think about anything else, you spend all your time thinking about and working on it, etc etc, but then it might sputter out and go dormant for a while or disappear entirely special interests tend to be much longer lived and identity based - you can get new ones as you age, but they tend to root very deeply and while they tend to be "milder", they are much longer lived in general. Hyperfixations tend to last a few days to a few months(or a year, even), but special interests can start in childhood and be lifelong, it's common for them to become careers and such Rain the quote breaker strikes again. I still don't know Ice's magic for making sure they don't break.
you called? (^:
anyways hi i have adhd star wars and warriors are my main two hyperfixations but i season them with some other stuff to keep it interesting

being an extravert with autism is WILD because I actually enjoy being around other people and socializing (usually it's the sensory overload that gets me when I'm out in public) but I'm like. really klutzy at it. I'm starting to recognize that I have a habit of getting too comfortable with someone too quickly and possibly overwhelming them with info and making them feel awkward. being chatty and enthusiastic but unable to recognize social cues is not a good combo! hihihi i’m vix! i have adhd (just diagnosed this september but i knew i had it for years) and i’m currently trying out some meds. i started one type a few weeks ago to no avail, and i’m starting a new one tomorrow. uhhh i don’t think i have any major current hyperfixations to talk about, but i can already tell i’m going to be insufferable when the new attack on titan season starts coming out in a few days because oh boy does that show have me in a chokehold. i only recently got over my hyperfixation caused by the previous seasons release lol

Shrike oh my word, yes! if anything the increased isolation during the pandemic has only it made it worse. now whenever I get together with my friends I cannot shut up. Someone once described me as having "golden retriever energy" and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Either way, I hope it's not too annoying, because I really need the social interaction, and the only way to get better at it is through practice! ^^' ugh, phone calls are the worst. I panic every time I have to make one -- even if I rehearse what I'm going to say ahead of time, something about that disembodied voice right in my ear with absolutely no social cues to go off of really freaks me out and I forget how to form coherent sentences, omg. I also have auditory processing issues and rely on reading lips somewhat, so I often have to ask people to repeat themselves, especially on phone calls.

I love being friends with and/or knowing over half the forums and then they end up meeting each other in strange places.
And then in other news, finding out two friends are related is always wild.
But anyway, I love the Harvest Mice, but now I'm curious if they use things other than tennis balls.

I don't know if it's just me, but I cannot handle Discord calls the same way I cannot deal with phone calls. It sucks because I'm a part of some amazing servers/communities, but I'll never get to play with them. (Playing with buddies without a mic is quite compromising, as you might imagine.) Ah, I've always preferred playing alone anyway.

Is it that hard to play online without a mic? I have been considering the idea of trying out some MMORPGs (like ESO) but I don't want to use a mic because I'm self-conscious about my voice.

My best solution to not wanting to play with a mic would be play games that have a chat feature built into them.
On the other hand, you could also choose to play by only using the mic and talking to people you already know you mesh well with or trust. I hate mics too but I don't get the same jitters talking to the people I trust the most compared to talking to people I don't know that well or haven't ever talked to vocally.. Start out small with only 1-2 people.

I really like this thread idea Hi, I'm Marten, but most people know me as Chicken on here, I was diagnosed with autism a few years ago (I've also been diagnosed with other things) I can't really recall any special interests, but I do have a lot of hyper-fixations, at least, according to the definitions that people put on here. Does anyone ever get hyper-fixations but they don't know why they enjoy that particular thing so much? That's how I am with a lot of things. I think right now, my biggest hyper-fixation is MBTI, and I know, there are some people here probably being like "Oh what again?" Or maybe not, because they know what it's like lol. I guess that's all I have to say for my introductory message, I look forward to talking to everyone!

The amount of times I have annoyed people by asking about their sun, moon and rising sign keeps on growing put I just cannot stop being fascinated by it on and off over the years. I have no idea if this would be called a long term interest with breaks or a recurring hyperfixation. Because it stays around for a while when it comes back but then gets overshadowed by other interests as the year goes on only to return even stronger. Anyways, enough about me, I saw your threads regarding MBTI and got interested for a bit until my zodiac fixation started kicking in again with those multiple "Zodiac Signs as ..." threads I made sometime around last year.

Chicken I'm mostly just interested in finding out anyones sun, moon and rising sign while reading about/attempting to memorize certain attributes each of the twelve different astrological signs have. But I cannot read a birth chart even if my life depended on it. Yup, my sun sign is Leo but I recently found out that my mother mixed up information in regards to my moon and rising sign. For the longest time, she (and thus I) was convinced that my moon sign was also Leo while she could not remember what my rising sign was. It turns out that the answer/truth was just one Google search away on an astrological site and my moon sign is actually Gemini while my rising sign is Cancer. The latter finally explains why I turn into a crying mess so frequently. I seem to remember that you are a Capricorn, if I'm not mistaken?

I think i recall someone in here saying they liked dragon age and im too lazy to double check who.
In any case, it is one of my more casual interests and i found the dawn of the seeker movie. I didn't even know dragon age had a movie.
I'm torn because the extra backstory and the gearing up for the civil war was nice backstory. But. Uh. If i can be honest if it wasn't a dragon age movie it was kind of bad and I couldn't get over how shallow and inconsistent the writing and animation was. Like some parts had some deep dialogue while others seemed very bland and then the fight scenes immediately after almost seemed like they were just trying to distract from it. And just. The dragons or other things being such a high quality and then the people looking so flat and textureless.
My enjoyment really was mostly from the extra story and I do have a better appreciation for Cassandra now. I have played inquisition but she was just always a party member I half ignored so maybe I should go back and see her dialogue more next time. :3
Also. I wasn't expecting the big bad templar dude to be voiced by Fking Piccolo lmao.

No need to be sorry! it is a chatroom after all Yeah, you would think airports would be the one place that makes my anxiety go super crazy, since it technically has all my triggers (too many things to listen to at once, not being sure where to go / what to do, and pretty dire consequences if something goes wrong), but for some bizarre reason I've never been that bothered at airports. I'm just too fascinated with all the systems in place (security, baggage, air traffic) for my anxiety to get the upper hand. It's great.

𝕱𝖑𝖚𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖋𝖆𝖑𝖑Oh, that's cool, I don't really know much about it either tbh Yes, I am! Great memory! Skypaw13Oh that's cool Oh, speaking of MBTI, I've been doing some more research, and I learned about something called the Ti-Fe/Fi-Te judging axis and the Si-Ne/Ni-Se perceiving axis. I'm pretty sure I'm on the Ti-Fe judging axis, and I'm also pretty sure that I'm on the Si-Ne perceiving axis, which would mean that I'm not an ISTP, but rather either an INTP, ENTP, ISFJ, or ESFJ, though, I'm open to deliberation about things regarding this. Oh, another thing that I did, was write a brief description of the cognitive functions, and made my sister rate what she thought she was on each one, and what she thought I was on each one, and then I did the same. The results were Her: ESFP/ENFJ from her rankings, she had Se and Fe as her highest, both of which ENFJ uses in their function stack, however, overall, she had more fitting with ESFP, I also got her ranked as ESFP with my rankings for her. Before that, I had her typed as an IFSP so close, she could still be an ISFP. Me: This one was a bit more difficult, she ranked me highest in all the introverted functions, but since she had ranked Ne as my highest extroverted function, I settled on INFP, from my rankings, I got INTP, though I had a much harder time ranking myself. Sorry for the mega long post

Hi! I’m Ivy (or Falcon, I go by that in real life sometimes so that’s also fine) and I was professionally diagnosed with autism around a year ago after my therapist suggested 6ish months prior that I likely was autistic.
My main special interest is birds and has been for most of my life. I’ve made my special interest into my career, as I’m an ornithologist doing field research (so far I’ve studied eagles and am now studying woodpeckers). I’ve also been a wildlife rehabilitator for 10 years and have cared for over 1,000 birds.
My other special interests include coins (and banknotes), true crime, airplanes (especially plane crashes and what causes them), animal color/pattern genetics, Warriors, Wings of Fire, solitaire, Minecraft, clovers (I have a whole system for finding and documenting four+ leaf clovers), and math (for the most part, not like the math you get taught in school, but real-life applications and math puzzles and just interesting things about math). All of these interests are recent, as in I’ve been obsessed with them at some point in the last year, and I’ve been into them for many years (for the most part, except coins and airplanes which are both fairly new interests) but I cycle through them, so my level of interest may vary at a given moment, unlike birds which I’ve had the same level of intense interest in for pretty much forever.
Anyway, sorry for the long-ish intro but I’ve been wanting to post here ever since this thread started (love this idea, by the way!) but haven’t had the time/energy until now.

Hi Ivy! I love talking to you about birds, I always learn so much new birds from you! I remember you showing me some of your coin collection before, how is that going? True crime is amazing, also, if you care to share, I'd love to know more about your system for finding and documenting four leaf clovers The coin collection’s going well, I got a lot to add to it from Christmas! I need to sit down and properly organize a lot of the newer coins but I haven’t had time and probably won’t for a while, but oh well, I’ll just have to save that project idea for later. I now have coins from 172 different countries/monetary systems (I say that because not all of them are from just one country, ex. the euro, which I count as its own different currency but technically it’s not just one country’s; also there are some from countries that no longer exist/have changed into something else), and banknotes from 64. Clover info: I’ve been into clovers since 5th/6th grade, if I recall correctly, after looking for four leaf clovers on a walk with my grandfather. We actually used to pick bagfuls of clover and sort through them at home to see if any were 4+ leafs, which I don’t really do much any more because I don’t have time for that but occasionally if it’s convenient I check nearby clover patches.
Anyway, when I used to pick bagfuls (again this started when I was like 10 and I still use pretty much the same organization system, so it’s not exactly perfect but it’s decent) I’d label the bags with the date and time harvested and the location (I’d use names I came up with using landmarks on the bags themselves but I have coordinates for them online). Later, after I’d searched the bags, I’d press any 4+ leaf clovers (or just ones that I found interesting for some other reason, like especially big ones or ones with other odd mutations). If it had been a while since the clovers were picked and they were beginning to wilt, I’d leave them in cups with water overnight to rehydrate them, then carefully dried them off and then pressed them. They were all pressed between paper towels under a stack of really heavy books for around a week, and I wrote the same info on the paper towels as was on the bags, as well as how many of each type of clover each paper towel contained (ex. “4 4-leafs, 3 5-leafs, 1 6-leaf”).
Even when I didn’t bring home giant bags of clover, I just did the same thing with pressing the 4+ leafs I’d picked. I’m really good at finding them just looking through a patch, partially because of practice with clover-finding specifically and because I’m used to looking for subtle details with other things, like bird identification.
Anyway, I know which patches around places I frequent are likely to have 4+ leaf clovers and which aren’t by now, as when you find one, you’re generally far likely to find more. I’ve searched several patches intensively and not found a single one, and others I’ve only looked at for like five minutes before finding 30. One such example was the one at my school, way back when I first got into this in 5th/6th grade (I forget which). In that patch, I found 20ish four-leafs, several 5-leafs, two 6-leafs, and a 7-leaf (highest I’ve ever found!) in minutes. I still have all of them, but especially the 7-leaf; I know right where it is because I have it in a little clear plastic holder keychain thing. It’s still in good condition, though its color has faded to brown since it’s so old.
But yeah, I have hundreds of these things, and I wish I could do more intensive studies on them to figure out what exactly causes 4+ leaf clovers. I figure it’s partially genetic but also partially environmental, based on my observations, since they tend to come in clusters but it’s also not guaranteed, and I’ve noticed I have better luck finding them earlier in the spring, and on the edges of their patches oftentimes. They also tend to have a high incidence of occurrence on all my school campuses 5th/6th grade through high school, which made me joke that they were all built on toxic waste dumps or something.
