Lightfoot's distancy is also noticed within his warrior duties. He lags behind other cats when patrolling and rarely responds when asked to help out around camp. Bramblenose and Waspstripe caught him once hunting too close to the border. His behavior is rather troubling, but the deputy decides to tell Icestar in confidence. Dandelionblaze is frustrated and confused by her ex-mate's behavior. He had given up her and her kits for another clan, so she decided she doesn't want any reminders of him. Dandelionblaze makes a deal with two rogue mates that since, all of their litters have been born dead, she'll give them her kits when she has them. She stops thinking clearly and also agrees to give them Fernshine's kits, without her knowing. The rogues promise to feed her and her clan well for this, as a thank-you.

Mottledkit is found missing. A search patrol is sent for the kit, but there is no sign of Mottledkit anywhere.

Icestar allows their passage and offers to let them stay at their camp for a night so that the expecting mother could rest. They graciously accept the offer and Seedsprout can't help but think that it was lucky that the black kittypets looked nothing like Windpebble. His adoptive son was never told his true origins and he didn't think his mate was ready to explain her past to the both of them. A few days after the kittypets have passed through, more scents are discovered past the border. One intruder is caught and is taken back to camp for questioning. The roughed up tom wore a torn collar and looked incredibly surprised and a bit frightened when he noticed Frostflower peeking out from the nursery. He, like all of his group, thought she had long died. The prisoner explains that he was sent to try and find the three who just left - their leader wanted them back.
