Fallowstar makes the rogues prove themselves by making them deliver a piece of pray for each cat in the clan. She leaves Icechill in charge of them and says if they accomplish it within 3 days, they will be allowed to join fully. Though she didn't make Nightgleam's joining this challenging, Fallowstar reasons that in lieu of the fox attack, SpiceClan would need the best warriors they could get.

On the first day, one rogue almost catches a blackbird. A she-cat manages to catch a squirrel and a mouse, but misses a vole. The smallest one of the group can't quite catch anything, while a tom with lighter fur successfully catches a thrush.

Icechill takes a liking to them and starts teaching them better hunting techniques. By the end of the 2nd day, they catch a total of 12 freshkill - though Icechill himself caught 2 mice to help them. He approves and tells them they only have 8 more to go.

On the last day, the one with darker mottled fur catches two birds, the she-cat catches a mouse and the shortest one catches a vole. Icechill catches a thrush, and two rouges work together to catch a rabbit. Now, they only need two more pieces of prey.

When Fallowstar meets them, Icechill informs her that though they didn't catch all 20, they did show impressive dedication and quick improvement of their hunting skills. After some convincing, Fallowstar allows them to join though makes the one with the most trouble hunting an apprentice.

Nightgleam has her second litter of kits, and some warriors are preparing by expanding the nursery den. Apricotheart and Heartpaw die in the process, while Nightgleam grieves for her only kit that survived from her first litter- dead. Icechill is made the new deputy in Apricotheart's place. Lotusfeather is upset, because no kit in the nursery wants to be a medicine cat.

On the day of Seedpaw's warrior ceremony, Fallowstar and her patrol of Baylight, Waspstrike, Birddash, and Carrotpaw gets attacked by a badger. Birddash takes a hit to save Carrotpaw but he dies soon after returning to camp. Fallowstar also takes the brunt of most of the badger's attacks and later dies in the following days due to infection. Carrotpaw's training is given to Waspstrike after the incident.

Yarrowfang surprises everyone by leaving the clan to be with her kittypet mate. Though Kestrelstrike is sad to see her go, she has high hopes that her daughter would be safer off living the life of a kittypet.
