As the resident nursery helper, Nightgleam grows close to Quailkit and Mosskit and, by association, to their father Barkstream. Eventually, the she-cat catches feelings for the tom but Barkstream keeps his distance. He was still grieving for his lost mate and was unwilling to pursue another relationship so soon which makes things awkward between them. The kits however begin to see Nightgleam as a mother and Quailkit even thinks about becoming her apprentice.

Carrotpelt finally wakes up but is agitated and does not recognize anyone. Lotusfeather thinks that the fall might have affected his memory and now the tom has amnesia. It pains his kin to see him in such a state and Fallowstar thinks that he might need to train as an apprentice again after his leg is healed, depending on how much he remembers of warrior life. Duckspirit rarely leaves his side and she and Nightgleam do their best to get his memories back.

Stoneblaze and Raggedfur want to have kits, but they don't know who to ask to surrogate. Rabbitleap agrees to have their kits, and they move to the nursery. The clan starts to worry, because depending on the sizes of the litters, they may have too many mouths to feed.

While the clan is worried about overpopulation, everyone is suprised when Kestrelstrike and Frostflower give birth. Kestrelstrike gives birth to four healthy kits, while the rogue queen Frostflower gives birth to two, but sadly one is too weak to survive the night.

Frostflower and Seedsprout grow close and become mates. The tom acts like a father to the young Windkit and cares for him while his mother was recovering from her injuries. When she finally heals, the two make a decision to raise him as a clan cat fully without telling him about his mother's kittypet origins. Her life before the clan was harsh and she didn't want him thinking about ever going through that life.
