crossposting from fan clans
hello! I'm looking for one more 1x1 to round out the next few months. I will say I'll be a little picky on this last one because I do want things to go smoothly and I really really want to worldbuild something cool and have someone I mesh well with! My quick list of Traits I'm looking for in a partner: - Advanced rp (aka able to put out 700-1k posts when necessary AND make good content) Also able to be flexible on action scenes and know when to shortpost to keep flow - Willing to roleplay multiple characters each and able to work with multiple characters in the same scene - Willing to roleplay fantasy and/or fantasy aspects - ASSERTIVE worldbuilder. Specifically someone who is willing to make something up on the fly and roll with an ongoing worldbuilding process. I want someone who is willing to take risks and think outside the box to come up with cool scenarios and both character and environmental storytelling! I want someone to actually bounce ideas off of and they'll bounce new things back. - Can rp with queer and diverse character cast - If we rp outside the forums, must be 18+ and/or can discuss boundaries in terms of language and content mentions; otherwise all forum rules apply here - idc what plot, I just want to worldbuild. Ideas welcomed - will rp romance any pairings - Basically I want someone to create a story with and really dig into characters through roleplay. - Uh, dm me or reply if this sounds like something you're interested in and we'll go from there. I might ask for rp sample if I haven't seen you around before. For this side of the forums though, I do have a few worldbuilding bases we can start on! A lot of them have only minor ideas and/or basic maps where we can just run free with ideas. Most are alt-world realistic geography settings that have varying levels of fantasy liberties taken. I just really like running geographical simulations and making accurate rivers and mountains and ore beds lmao

This sounds like it's something right up my alley. I'm always up for worldbuilding and I'm a suckered for anything fantasy related. For my posts, I tend to write 500-700 word replies depending on the scene/previous reply, but have gone up to around 1.5K words at times.

yo thanks for the quick reply holy usually it takes months haha I wasn't actually expecting something so quickly and may have bitten off more than I can chew with also starting up a new job this weekend, but what the hell I can try as long as you're okay with being a bit patient with me on the startup!
Do you have any base ideas or snippets that we want to start with? I'm really down with anything right now! I've done the base for the last two rps so I totally would love to go with someone else's ideas if you have any!
I do have two or three worlds that I can share as bases as well. One isn't mapped, but has a bit of Lore and follows the "civilization vs wilderness" trope; feels like a westmarch campaign if you heard of those. There are safe zones marked by purple crystals where groups of people can live safely, but outside of those are very dangerous. Ideal if you want to have full creativity on plant and animal life. (I originally have their world as "explore and document the wild" not "conquer and tame the land" but either works) The second is more fleshed out in the grand scheme with a flintlock fantasy era-esque war drama going on. I have a map and the countries plotted with different territorial disputes. But there's very little done at the micro scale though so it has plenty of room to grow! I also have Rath that's been my toss-in world for dnd-esque generic fantasy plots. There's a bit of scattered Lore but most of it is make whatever is needed.

Don't worry about timing. Before I replied, I was deliberating if I should post or not because I just started a new semester of schooling myself. I eventually gave in, as you can see, but I'll probably be a bit spotty myself for at least the first week or two.
As for ideas, I do have a few. Some are general ideas for places in a world while others are random things I just thought up but haven't managed to fit in anywhere.
Ideas A super continent that had a portion if it shattered by a god (or some sort of magical trickery, or it was just a natural formation and given a fantastical explanation)
Archipelago kingdom that specializes in seatrade and has a navy
Flat gem chips is used for currency
A mask wearing society. The masks are decorated and may be used to denote status, wealth, occupations, etc. Different people within the nation/world all have different customs with the mask. Some cover the whole head, hair included, others cover the lower part of the face
Frozen wasteland that was once a prosperous nation. Evidence of such is now buried or desolate ruins
Clockwork glass birds that fly around and can play music
A forest with a creature that grants wishes/desires, but also gives a curse. It ranges from mildly inconvenient (like forgetting why you went into a room, but only for something you really needed) to something a bit more damaging (a loved one being completely erased from memory). The forest has odd animals and plants and only allows some people through. The path opens up for acceptable people, but closes behind them. People never take the same path twice
Giant, underground city (or a city in a ravine) with homes lining the walls. Glowy plants and animals. A river runs through it and into some caves. The caves house various dangers, but are kept at bay by people who patrol the caves
Jewelry that can turn into a weapon/summon a weapon. For example, an emerald necklace with a gold chain can summon/turn into a sword with an emerald blade and gold hilt
A giant ship sails through the waters. It's like it's own small country with leaders and citizens. People visit to get away from their current life. Maybe kinda like the lotus casino from Percy Jackson
And these are some ideas I have. With that said, both the civilization vs wilderness and flintlock fantasy ideas sound really cool.

Ahhhhh all of those are so cool! Esp the clockwork birds that's just so steampunk it's amazing
You down to mix and match some of those because I think I have a way to get a few in there. I'm thinking the "world cracked by a god" works really well with the "cavern/ravine" ideas: there would be other land available at the edges, but the middle part of the continent would be dominated by a barren plateaus and deep ravines that aren't very hospitable. Perhaps there's gemstones or magic available there, but only to those brave and hardy enough to deal with the creatures in the depths.
A few other little things can be added in there, like the gemstone weapons and currency. The deepest ravines have the most valuable gems for making into these weapons and money. Riches abound. Perhaps the masks can also come into this culture, both as status and to keep some anonymity in this place where anyone could be carrying fortunes in gems at a time. Masks to keep safe or denote large companies/gangs would make sense.
If we wanted to make this continent a very large island, we could totally swing in the hotel california boat and a few large island kingdoms! We could even have one big island on each side, and the middle part be no-mans-land wilderness, the center of which is this god-smashed cavernous hole

tada tada a map The colors are just for biomes. They are uh, kinda accurate if ocean current flows clockwise/left to right. I thought it would be interesting to have a circular current that the boat can just... naturally(magically) flow around. If the world was created by gods it doesn't have to follow physics. For the northern and western islands, light blues are tundra, dark green is conifer, mid green is forested, pale green is grassland/plainland/prairie (aka easily farmable) and the grey is ice plains/flats The bright greens to the top right are temperate rainforest! The grey-green on the eastern island is swampland and the orange over there is where dunes would be placed by the current. Onto the hot biomes! All the arid biomes are on the mainland and include savannah/steppe in yellow, desert in orange and mesa/hot steppe in red. Purple/pink is Mediterranean zones. The bright green on the island is rainforest. The dashed lines in the bottom left are where reefs can form. Probably the biggest one at least. I put some spiky rocks in that bay too, since it's on a fault line and would have had volcanic activity. The islands are not to scale or anything; we can put as many as we want in the archipelago. The last few would still be volcanic, though the biggest and westernmost would be stable. They made a canal across the west side because it was too dangerous moving through the stones and reefs and shallow ocean over there. The eastern island has massive bridges between their islands! Maybe made by gods!

Sweet! That has always been my intenion with the bird idea and I'm glad it translated well.
I'm also very down to mixing and matching. It's always fun to see what results from it. Anyway, I didn't consider it before, but I like the idea of combining the cavern/ravine stuff with the cracking of the land. It makes sense. Also, I like the idea of mines/veins/ores being more exposed, which can lead to people gaining the magic/gemstones/whatever we decide. I like the concept of the deeper someone goes into a ravine, the more precious things they find. Makes the danger of collecting those valuable items worth it for some.
I really like that idea for the whole masks concept and how they might be used in gangs/organizations. Also, if they're working in an enclosed space where a lot of dust/things that shouldn't be breathed is up in the air, it keeps them safe (as you mentioned).
If it helps for the mask thing or if you're interested, the original idea involved various races of elves (some from DnD, other I just kinda made) with their own masks. The masks would began to be worn around ten years of age and rarely taken off, only sometimes around close family members really. Hight elves- Masks of porcelain molded into a perfect face with various embleshiments. A hood/scarf was around the rest of their head. Wood elves- Flat pieces of wood with rectangular eye holes cut out. Flowers, paint, branches, teeth, claws, etc. would decorate them. The rest of their head was uncovered. Dark elves- Simple cloth/scarves worn on the bottom of their faces. Fire elves- Metal helmets over their entire head. May have some metal embellishments depending on rank/status. Sky elves- A colorful, decorative scarf over the lower parts of their faces with dark goggles covering their eyes which could be taken off. Water elves- Simple veils over the lower parts of their faces. Usually somewhat sheer.
Anyway, onto the map! I love it!
The giant hole in the middle of the main island/continent is great! Maybe there's caves/mines on the sides of the hole? Perhaps these caves lead to ravines?
The ocean having a circular flow is really cool and I like the idea of the ship/ships in general just being able to travel around the islands using that current. And yeah, it's a magic, fantasy world. Physics doesn't need to have a huge bearing on things.
I love all the islands surronding the main one and how they all match up with the places they split from. The canal separating the main island from the one on the bottom left if really cool and I love the bridges connecting all the islands on the eastern side. Also, yes to volcanic islands. And yes to all the biomes within the islands.
This map was really cool and I'm excited to start populating it with other ideas.

Thanks I really like maps <3
And for the center, I was thinking less one big hole and more just... ruined land? I don't know how we want to do that, if it's more a "tainted" variety where things start becoming dangerous, or that's where all the ravines start. I'd imagine that whole area is covered with deep trenches maybe miles wide. Or perhaps floating/crumbling slabs of plateau? Or just huge pillars from the depths? crazy things like that. Less "empty" and more "broken".
I really really like the ideas of elves instead of generic humans! Or we can do both and add a few other dnd races in there. Perhaps the elves are spread out, but each other race has a home island/kingdom? I'm a sucker for lizardfolk if we want to throw them in the eastern island swamps and dunes. Perhaps some sort of merfolk/selkie people from the southern islands? I would love to play a frost-aasimar from the north. That would be so cool to have fluffy winged not-humans adapted to the cold north.
Or just have a free-for-all with races and homelands. Just each make characters and give them homes and see what shakes out. Though we'd have to decide how connected or isolationist each island is; I'd assume in the middle it's whatever adventurers are brave enough to go there and it's a mix of every group.
idk how much you want to actually plan vs dive in and build as we go. I'm cool to hop on whatever ideas we have here and make up the rest on the fly! Just yeet some characters and add more when they need to be there and work from the ground up into some sort of conflict driven by character wants and the growing world

Maps are so much fun. I love both making them and looking at them.then. Sounds good to me. Maybe it could be something of a combination? Like it's where the ravines begin, but also tainted/"cursed". It could be a combination of deep trenches/ravines, floating/crumbling plateaus and maybe some areas have these pillars. I think, if you want to, we can kinda go crazy with it. Also, maybe these cracks/shattered area/broken area could look like when a hammer smashes down on tile. Kinda like this: duckduckgo.com/?q=hammer+impression+in+rock&t=fpas&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.shopify.com%2Fs%2Ffiles%2F1%2F1330%2F1631%2Fproducts%2FN11143.jpg%3Fv%3D1482218175) I like the idea of certian races coming from certian places. Maybe we have a few races (elves, humans, dwarves(?)) who are quite spread out across the land and others (lizardfolk, selkies, merfolk) who only come from certian places. And yes, love fluffy-winged nonhumans. Great idea. As for how isolationist or not the islands are, maybe that depends on the residents? This could be something we explore more in the rp, though. Honestly, I'm fine with either. Jumping right in is cool, but if there's anything else that you think needs to be planned, we can figure that out now. Oh, but I did have a little idea for the main islands. So maybe there was some event millennea ago that broke everything causing people to flee to the outer islands and maybe even the edges of the mainland. So for a good amount of years, no one dared/wanted to go back to the main island/the middle of it because they feared whatever might be lurking there. So, during the however long time, the people explored the outer islands and focused on making those their new Hine. Perhaps only somewhat recently (like the last 50 years or so), people have begun exploring it again. Also, do you think this will be more flintlock fantasy or medieval fantasy? I'm fine with either personally.

Yeah! A whole bunch of weird, broken things that people don't really know about sounds like the perfect soup for some adventurers to explore! And it totally works that only recently have people gone back. I'd guess there's like, hermits that have been there forever but they may or may not be hospitable towards our adventuring groups. A lot of them probably were runaways/outlaws in there too.
AHHH don't make me choose era I love them all. But I haven't done flintlock in a while, and guns would make sense why people feel brave enough to travel down there! Esp if they have cannon and could build a little fortress in the corner of the ravine. With guns in the walls, that should be pretty safe from any creatures down there.
I think the only real last thing to discuss is where to start and how many characters each to work with. I think we should totally have new adventurers in the Chasms as that will have the most exploration and drama, but is there any other location you'd like to have a splinter crew start at? One of the islands that interests you in exploring the culture further?

Yes! Let's have hermits! And some can be criminal/outlaw hermits! I would imagine it'd be a mixed bag if they were hospitable or not. Maybe most aren't, but some are. We can even have a case where someone appears to be friendly/hospitable, but kills and robs the guests who stay with them.
Alright, a flintlock fantasy works for me~ Also yes to ravine fortresses.
As for characters, I usually do two or three. Anyway, I like having a new adventuring group exploring the caves and I think it'd be fun to have a splinter group either in the north, or on the islands to the east.
Also, magic. Are we going to do anything goes, or is it going to be structured/planned out?

We can do one to the east! I do like the wintery cold lands to the north, but tbh I don't even want to think about cold right now. And the east is interesting since warm currents give it a warmer climate than the latitude suggests. I'm guessing the heaviest civilized area is either on the northern island near the lake or the center area with the farmland hills. Whoever does the starter for there can choose that.
I'll start with a few characters but I will say I do tend to spread out into a wider cast.
As for magic, lets start with anything goes and if things start getting too weird or crazy we can step back and lay some ground rules for what we have. I'd prefer not to take anything off the table to start so we can have a unique system in place. That's half the fun of worldbuilding is to take some creative starting ideas and see where they lead.
Here, let me make a thread and we can move there to put down some characters. I have a few ideas already and two characters that I'll adapt for this!
