Here's the start! I can keep this first post updated with some info as we go along as hopefully we'll have plenty of politics, plants and new groups to populate this land! tada tada a map
The colors are just for biomes. They are uh, kinda accurate if ocean current flows clockwise/left to right. I thought it would be interesting to have a circular current that the boat can just... naturally(magically) flow around. If the world was created by gods it doesn't have to follow physics.
For the northern and western islands, light blues are tundra, dark green is conifer, mid green is forested, pale green is grassland/plainland/prairie (aka easily farmable) and the grey is ice plains/flats
The bright greens to the top right are temperate rainforest! The grey-green on the eastern island is swampland and the orange over there is where dunes would be placed by the current.
Onto the hot biomes! All the arid biomes are on the mainland and include savannah/steppe in yellow, desert in orange and mesa/hot steppe in red.
Purple/pink is Mediterranean zones. The bright green on the island is rainforest. The dashed lines in the bottom left are where reefs can form. Probably the biggest one at least. I put some spiky rocks in that bay too, since it's on a fault line and would have had volcanic activity. The islands are not to scale or anything; we can put as many as we want in the archipelago. The last few would still be volcanic, though the biggest and westernmost would be stable.
They made a canal across the west side because it was too dangerous moving through the stones and reefs and shallow ocean over there. The eastern island has massive bridges between their islands! Maybe made by gods! Ideas of DnD style Races and elf masks If it helps for the mask thing or if you're interested, the original idea involved various races of elves (some from DnD, other I just kinda made) with their own masks. The masks would began to be worn around ten years of age and rarely taken off, only sometimes around close family members really. Hight elves- Masks of porcelain molded into a perfect face with various embleshiments. A hood/scarf was around the rest of their head. Wood elves- Flat pieces of wood with rectangular eye holes cut out. Flowers, paint, branches, teeth, claws, etc. would decorate them. The rest of their head was uncovered. Dark elves- Simple cloth/scarves worn on the bottom of their faces. Fire elves- Metal helmets over their entire head. May have some metal embellishments depending on rank/status. Sky elves- A colorful, decorative scarf over the lower parts of their faces with dark goggles covering their eyes which could be taken off. Water elves- Simple veils over the lower parts of their faces. Usually somewhat sheer.

(I'll fix continuity with worldbuilding; I'm stealing characters from other roleplays that flopped) Kas Kahva an Rahkas "Kas"
|| Male (He/They) || 36 || Pan
Kahva an Rahkas goes by many names. On the Divine plane of his birth, only friends and family would use the familiar "Kahva", while formally he would go by his earned title "Rahkas". But here, on the mortal plane, he answers to the shorter "Kas" or, on paper, "Lavender". Kas has pale skin with freckles down the backs of their arms and across his back. His eyes are grey. Their hair is blonde, darker at the roots and fading to light highlights at the ends. His hair is naturally curly and somewhere just before shoulder-length. Long enough to hang down, but not enough to tie back. His features are narrow, but soft and rounded, they don't have many harsh edges to his frame or his face. Kas' appearance looks human at a glance, but can be quite unsettling once you realize everything is just slightly... off. His face is perfectly symmetrical. His eyes are slightly too small, too rounded. His cheekbones are too flat and connect too far back on his skull. His ears also are pushed back and tilted upwards, curving to points. His legs are slightly too long for his body and his fingers too long for his hands. Kas' disproportionality puts them right at the cusp of the uncanny valley, close enough to easily pass for human, but far enough away from that to understand that something about him is not quite right. He is always a bit.. eccentric with his choice in outfits. For him, nothing is quite right without the appropriate hat or gloves or shoulder cape. He prefers pastels and muted, light colors. He is usually wearing a pale-yellow shirt with darker fitting pants --with plenty of pockets-- and tall boots. Their cape is an over-the-shoulder pin, white with a golden border and black curling embroidery.
Kahva an Rahkas is a Divine. He hails from the Divine plane, a mirrored reality that touches the Middle plane at some points. He often misses the Divine plane, but while he endlessly complains about the Middle plane, they still haven't left despite having no real reason that they couldn't return whenever they wished. As a Divine, Kas has some innate connection to magic, particularly light magic. This connection isn't very strong, often only enough to light a candle or make a stone glow unless the conditions (moon cycle, closeness of the planes, what he last ate) is exactly perfect for the spell. He also retains some of the Divine truthsense, though ironically the truthsense works best for small lies and ancient mythos rather than anything helpful.
Kas is a creative problem-solver. Logic has no place in his decision making process, and his Divine perspective often leads him to think outside of the box in rather unpredictable ways. He would also rather solve a problem using wit rather than brawn, but would rather endure physical pain than any degree of mental or emotional stress. He cannot stand embarrassent or humiliation, even secondhand. They have a surprising amount of strength, as most of their mass is in his Divine form, which isn't physically expressed. He is also decent enough with a sword, though most of that knowledge is in showy sparring and fencing. He abhors violence and will avoid conflict as much as he can. Surprisingly, he makes a good mediator and confident; he doesn't care enough to divulge secrets, and his personal disgust of conflict and secondhand emotional stress leads them to often intervene and diffuse. Kas is selfish to a fault. There is very little in this world that can make him see outside himself and his own priorities, though he has no qualms aiding others when their goals align with his own. They are quite vain, believing the Divine are superior to all else on this plane. This makes Kas hard to tolerate sometimes, but can make him easy to manipulate. He looks down on anyone and anything from the Middle plane. Even the language is ugly to them, and he isn't very fluent in common despite living here for almost a decade now. He often supplements his lack of fluency with Celestial, and has a habit of removing verbs from sentences to mould the grammar closer to his native tongue. But however aloof he holds himself from the middle plane, he is curious about its workings. Though he is quick to toss out anything that isn't to his standards, he figures himself on a quest to find the beauty in this plane (however sparse it may be). Though what he considers beautiful is seemingly random to the other non-Divines, and he can never explain his logic without long asides into Celestial poetry, senseless analogies and current moon cycles. Kas was sent to the Shattered Plains by the Eastern King, though they are closed-lipped to the reasons they are so dedicated in finding it. What he will say, however, is that he's been working under the king for years now and has the king's own ear. He is normally an accessory to court, but he was asked personally to take on this mission and venture off. Why? Because they're the best man for the job, of course, and someone has to make sure the treasure makes it to the king's hands. Unlike the Divine, the races of the Middle plane are so quick to succumb to greed after all.
Lachlan Lachlan Conway Inkeep's Daughter || Female (she/her) || 20 || Hetero Lachlan is tall and lanky. She was told that soon, perhaps, she'd grow a woman's figure like her mother's: with curving hips, a strong back, a cupid's bow smile. But none of that has come to pass and she still looks more like a growing teenager than an adult. Lachlan, however, has learned to adapt. She has straight, dark brown hair that waves at the last few inches, which she leaves down, reaching almost to her waist. She helps hide the sharp angles of her face with light touches of cosmetics, along with shadowing her eyes to highlight the bright hazel. Lachlan often wears long, colorful gowns that complement her height and loves weaving thin ribbons through her hair.
Lachlan is curious, bubbly, and always welcoming of strangers. A massive extrovert, Lachlan has grown up at the inn and its constant stream of interesting patrons, and loves prying their stories from around the fires late at night. She may be horrible at remembering her history and math lessons, and is absolutely horrible with directions, but she never forgets a face. She can be impulsive, however, often promising more than she can realistically give. Lachlan just wants to be helpful. Besides this, she is optimistic to a fault, believing wholeheartedly the best of everyone. Her determination to be helpful is a double edged sword, but her hope in the world is admirable if a bit foolish. Lachlan resides in an inn between the north and middle islands of the Eastern Kingdom. She is the daughter of the innkeeper that houses travelers between the two islands. The inn is well known and frequently traveled. Lachlan has recently contracted vampirism, though she doesn't really understand that yet.
Lucie Lucille Sutton || Female (she/her) || 27 || Demi-bisexual
Physical Description: Lucie is on the shorter side, only 5'4 at 26 years old. She has dark, curly hair cut to the shoulder, sometimes tied back in a bun but often left in a frizz. Her dark brown eyes sit under downwards-tilted brows, her face is rounded, cheekbones low, a scattering of lighter freckles over her nose. Her skin is mid-toned, too dark to tan, but never burns. She has a curvy body type and is slightly overweight from the rich foods her family affords. Yet her arms and legs are strong from the hard labor of the loom; she was given all the hard tasks her siblings didn't want to do and the long hours have given her strength. Her stamina may be great for weaving, but less so for running, and she has a weak core strength.
Personality: Her confidence has never been her strong suit. Being the one who picked up most of the distasteful work, Lucie often allows herself to be relegated away from important things and set her own way and can be easy to push around. She would rather go do something she doesn't want to do than make a fuss about it. She hesitates to show weakness or ask for help, but luckily she rarely needs it. She's a sharp thinker and has a strong arm and will, unafraid to take her time to learn skills particularly when no one is there to watch her fail. What she lacks in confidence she makes up for in determination and creativity. She's one to do a task well rather than quickly. She's loyal, and wants to use her position to speak out for those who don't have a voice (even if she's too afraid to take sides). Lucie is the kind of person that wouldn't be brave enough to stand up for someone in an argument, but would make them tea and cookies to help soothe them after the fact. A good friend and outgoing in small circles, but someone who shies away at the first sign of disagreement.
Background: She comes from a long line of weavers, rich folk who, while skillful, rather talk about weaving than do any actual labor themselves. Lucie is the fourth of five daughters: she wasn't in line for inheritance like the eldest, (the second never counted, shunned for leaving the family name and joining the mercenaries), the third was prettiest, in line for a good marriage, and the youngest, four years younger than Lucie, was a weaving prodigy. This left Lucie, the disposable one, to be sent away to the Shattered Plains to oversee the Sutton mines and increase her family's wealth. Like the rest of the Suttons, she learned to work the loom before she could even say full sentences. Lucie had taken to it quickly, though she found much more enjoyment knitting and spinning the soft wool than she did working the loom. She had always known she would be pushed to exile in the Plains. Since she was old enough to understand the arrangement, Lucie has been both excited and mournful of her duty. She knew it was the best she would get, rather than be married off to a lower noble, whatever one her parents could arrange the lowest dower for, hoarding the rest for the other daughters. But she hated that she never got a choice, was frightened of the responsibilities and wilderness. She knows that although she will be the top dog for the immense Sutton Estate in the Shattered Planes, when it got dangerous or the work boring, the Suttons would be happy to ignore the fact that Lucie was there at all.
Nasir Nasir || Male (He/Him) || 22 || Honestly who knows
Nasir is only 5'2 and built broadly. He has dark skin, dark eyes, and dark hair. He is mostly human but has some fire elf blood from the fact that he can make his hands, feet, and brows glow at will and has some natural affinity for fire magics, though he doesn't particularly know how to control it.
Nasir is a fighter. Since he was thrown out into the desert to fend for himself, Nasir learned from experience how to fight to survive. He is good at reading the land, has a natural ease of navigation, and is fair with most martial weapons though he prefers a heavy saber or sword at his back. He's never fired a gun, though he's always wanted to try. Nasir is quiet, preferring not to draw attention to himself. He thinks himself Ra's shadow. He also thinks he looks way scarier than he actually does. Nasir is fidgety and really doesn't have a lot of patience; if it's something he can't fight, he doesn't really want to deal with it. He tends to wander and find his own goals and way when left to his own devices.
Nasir is Ra's protector. He hails from the desert region of the continent from a group of fanatics who stayed to honor the gods instead of fleeing to the islands' safety. At a young age, Nasir was picked to be sacrificed to pacify the god, since the group had recently fallen prey to a particularly nasty sand-bat. He was left out on the desert to die. But Nasir survived. He's learned much about surviving in the time since then, and during his travels he picked up Ra, a kindred spirit that was also alone on the mainland. The two have been inseparable since, closer than brothers even though they share no blood. Ra Chandran "Ra" || Male (He/Him) || 19 || Homosexual
Ra is half lizardfolk half wood elf. He is slight of build, perhaps 5'7, with chestnut to grey skin and pale tan scales on the sides of his neck, back, and arms. His ears are elven but his eyes are larger than they should be and bright yellow. His hair is wavy and blonde.
Ra is, in short, an archeologist. He doesn't do well with people, but is engrossed in figuring out and documenting the history of the main continent, particularly the areas that have never been seen before.
Ra's parents were also archeologists. They would take Ra around the world to learn from the ruins they found. His father was born on the eastern continent, but he doesn't know his mother's history. Both his parents died on an expedition deep into the Shattered Lands, leaving Ra at a camp on the outside at only thirteen. Fortunately, he found Nasir. And while the older boy was only sixteen at the time, he took Ra under his wing and they've travelled together ever since.

Zelwyn Emersen She/her, ? - 29 years old, half-fae half-human ranger. At first glance, Zelwyn looks like a normal half-elf with pointed ears and long limbs. Upon closer inspection, her features are noticably different. She has long, pointed ears, her body is slightly too long, and her eyes are a touch too big and wide. Zelwyn has tan skin scattered with patches of freckles and various scars throughout her life. She has very angular and long features, which is especially noticeable in her face. Her large eyes look different in the lighting. In direct sunlight, they appear amber; in darker areas they appear more green; under candlelight or electric lights they look yellow. Her long, wavy, reddish-brown hair is usually kept in a tight braid--away from her face to keep it from being distracting. Zelwyn is fairly tall, standing at 5'11'', and has an athletic build due to the nature of her work. - Zelwyn is more of the silent type. She prefers to observe from the shadows, taking in conversation while not participating in them much herself. Her reserved nature leads her to being more thoughtful as she thinks through what people say. Due to her upbringing and job, she's quite resourceful, knowledgeable, and adaptable in most situations, however it's also left her quite serious and mostly humorless. Zelwyn's quite blunt, preferring to say what a situation is outright as opposed to sugarcoating it. This has led her to be rather pessimistic, though she would claim she's just being realstic. - As a ranger, Zelwyn is used to the dangers of the wild. Her grandparents (on her father's side) were some of the first people to begin exploring the Shattered Plains. Growing up, her father taught her and her brothers all the necessary survival skills for both living on the mainland and exploring the Shattered Plains. Though she can shoot a rifle--and is fairly skilled with the weapon--she much prefers the bow and a good hunting knife. Both are much quieter to use, don't cause ringing in her ears, and are easier to maintain in the wilds. Due to her fae heritage, Zelwyn has fairly good eyesight and hearing and had some darkvision. She sometimes offers services as a hunter or guide. - Zelwyn's father comes from a long line of homesteaders, rangers, and survivalists. His family has almost always lived on the mainland and were one of the first to start exploring the Shattered Plains. Her mother came from an affluent merchant family. While trying to establish a trade route on the main island, the pair met. Eventually, they married and had three children, Zelwyn and her two younger brothers. Taven Magus He/him, grayasexual biromantic - 21 years old, human performer. Growing up and spending most of his life in the warmer regions of the world has left Tav with dark, olive-toned skin. He stands around 5'8'' and has a rather slim and lanky build. Though he's gotten more careful with sage, Tav still has a tendency to bump into things. He has a round face with a pointed chin and curly, black hair he tries to keep tamed. Scars on the left side of his body and face are from a beast attack when he was a child. It left one of his dark green eyes (his left one) completely blinded. He occasionally wears wears eyepatch over his left eye for the theatrics of it. - Tav is a very friendly and outgoing guy. He enjoys talking with people and getting to know them, even if he knows he'll never see them again. His good-natured and comfortable attitude often makes those around him more likely to open up, though he doesn't see that success with everyone he meets. He has a sense of adventure and doesn't like staying in one place for too long, so he's always finding himself on the move. He enjoys attention and likes to overexaggerate pieces of his life. This leads him to being somewhat arrogant and boastful. This has also gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion as he talked up skills he didn't possess. - Like his parents and older siblings before him, Tav is a powerful wizard. Unlike the rest of his family who either pursued scholarly callings or worked for nobility and royalty of the eastern islands, Tav spends his time as a traveling prefomer. Specifically, a traveling magician. Most of his acts involve sleight-of-hand trickery and he often finds using real magic to be cheating, with the occasional exception. If he's not putting on a performance, he's telling stories of his travels or exaggerated tales of his life. Though he'll say something different every time, a childhood accident left him blind in one eye. - Tav comes from a family of wizards. His parents worked for the eastern royal family before retiring. His oldest sister, like their parents before them, has taken their place. His brother is a wizarding professor at a prestigious school. Finally, his second sister works at a library. Neleth Vizac She/her, pan - 25 years old, quarter-merfolk three-quarters tiefling researcher. Looking at Neleth paints a fairly clear picture of her heritage. Short, straight, white hair is usually neatly combed and kept down, partially due to the horns that curl to the sides of her head. She has a tail which, just like her Horns, are a mark of her infernal blood. She has dark blue skin with a lighter front and darker stripes on the back of her body. That coupled with the slight webbing between her fingers and toes and black eyes with light blue sclera are a mark of her merfolk heritage. Neleth is fairly short, standing around 5'3'' and is generally somewhat small. - Neleth is an easily excitable person. Almost anything can get her excited or capture her eager attention, including watching paint dry. That is assuming, of course, she can sit long enough to watch it. She has a tendency to get easily distracted, with is only made worse by her scatter-brained nature. This leads her to be consistently curious and talkative. Together, it often makes her shift from topic to topic, whether it's in her head or chatting with others. It can lead to overcharging on occasion. Neleth can be impatient and brash, rushing off head-on into whatever she sets her heart on instead of taking it slowly. Some find this surprising due to her intelligence. For some people, that intelligence would be attached to someone cold and unfriendly. For Neleth, that is not the case. She's quite sweet and easily trusting with people. ( Brownie, I added some stuff so if you want to take a read through, feel free)

Having an adventure in the east works for me.
I really like your characters. They're cool and unique and I look forward to interactions between them and my own when I get them up. Speaking of, I'll probably start out with three and add a couple more as I go. That's what usually happens, at least.
I'm good with having magic where anything goes. I'm curious to see what we can do/ accomplish without restraints right now.
Anyway, give me some time to get some characters up and we can go from there.

Ahhhh they're all cuties esp Neleth I love little teifling merfolk baby <3 And it's all good to be on and off; I know I've been running errands all day too and went on a nice hike.
I've been calling the ruined lands the Shattered Plains but there's probably a few legend names for it. I can start a few characters up there tonight since it's a smaller area, perhaps you could start something in the eastern islands? I have too many ideas for where to start over there, so imma make you choose ;)

Ah sounds good about the hike. It's nice to get away from people sometimes.
I like that name for the broken region, and it'll be fun to come up with some more names. Also, sounds good! And yah for choosing! Maybe! Anyway, I can definitely starts something in the east.

Lucie || Shattered Plains Fortress
"But I have orders from the King!" Lucie gave the man a pitying glance from over her papers, though it was hidden from his eyes from the mask over the bottom of her face. She'd seen many like him beaten down by that same doorman. In fact, she herself thought that the Sutton name would carry weight here when she arrived a mere three weeks ago, but it hadn't taken long for her to learn that the only thing the Shattered Plains respected was strength and money. She had none of the former, but luckily her name did mean give her plenty of access to the latter.
She watched as the doorman closed the door in the petitioner's face. He battered at it in vain: the heavy wooden door was set straight into the stone side of the ravine so sturdily she doubted a cannon could break it down. Eventually he gave up and slunk away back towards the mouth of the fortress, the white shoulder cape fluttering dejectedly behind him. Lucie shook her head and started back on the papers, trailing a finger down the list of names. Many were foreign, with syllables she didn't know how to pronounce and some with letters so different she didn't know where they originated or what they sounded like. A few were notable as elvish names, but as she scanned the crowd that didn't help narrow down the options.
Anyways, the advertisement was clear: Lucie would be sitting under the sign for the Beetle's Fang inn. One of her mother's people that has been working her for longer had given letters to everyone on this list offering them money for exploration and maps. Lucie skimmed over the terms and was surprised to see how slim the Suttons' cut would be. Of course, many of the people already in the Shattered Plains were here for a reason and most were not interested in seeking employment from a third party. Perhaps these slim trimmings were as generous as they could allow.
Lucie already finished a drink while she sat and called the waiter for another. "Watered down, please." She might be here a while.

Neleth, the Excitable Researcher The journey to the Shattered Plains had been a nightmare. From what Neleth was told, it was supposed to be a straightforward trip. She'd sail in from the southern isles and cut through a portion of the mainland before ending up at the Shattered Plains Fortress. That was supposed to take about two weeks. Instead, she had arrived at her destination three and a half weeks later after numerous detours and delays in her journey. Most people would probably have been annoyed at that. Neleth was not one of them. The woman had loved every moment of it. After spending most of her life in the southern isles, it was refreshing to expierence a new land. It was especially refreshing to expierence a new land that was still being explored and discovered.
Now, Neleth had found her way to the Shattered Plains Fortress, and it did not disappoint. People of all shapes and sizes flowed past her, most barely sparing her a second glance. It was amazing! Neleth grinned as she moved deeper into the fortress, clutching her notebook excitedly. It had instructions copied from an important letter the researchers guild had received. Her parents, who were the heads of the guild, had gotten the letter from an old friend detailing a mission to explore more of the Shattered Plains. After some extensive persuasion on her part, they had eventually agreed to let her go.
Pausing out of the way of passersby, Neleth pulled the notebook up to her face, reading over what she copied from letter again. She was just one part in a small group hired by the mysterious friend to explore the plains. Though the promise of money was enticing--it was something her parents were interested in as research trips weren't exactly cheap--the possibility of being one of the first to truly study what the Shattered Plains had to offer was even more so. Neleth scanned over the words, eyes lingering on the intended meeting place.
"Look for Beetle's Fang inn," she read to herself, smiling. She closed the notebook with a muffle snap before searching around for any sings of the inn. If it came to it, she could always ask for directions. As she tried to keep focused on her task, she noted the people who walked by. A disgruntled patron in a white cape. A tall, msuclar orc woman. A group of halflings, dwarves, and an elf. It was all so spectacular and nearly...overwhelming. As her eyes wandered through the fortress, she noticed the lack of electrical lighting. Candles, oil lanterns, and what she could only assume was some sort of spell kept the place lit. Her eyes widened in interest. She knew there were places that still lacked the luxuries electrical lighting provided, but it was still surprising to see those places in action. How hard would it be to set up such a system here? Was it something people wanted? Was it even possible to have electrical lighting in the Shattered Plains? What would--
Where was she? Right, searching for Beetl's Fang inn. Or the sign, at least. With a shake of her head, Neleth continued her search and eventually found what she was looking for. The place was carved into the rock with seats places in front of it. The sign swung out above the seating and right underneath was a woman. With her smile widening, Neleth headed towards the woman at the bar.
"Watered down, please," she heard the woman say. As the waiter began to fulfill her order, Neleth sat down right next to her.
"Did you get a letter to meet under the sign at the Beetle's Fang inn?"
(I wasn't entierly sure if everything was kinda opened with shops and such being carved into the rock while seating and stalls were outside or if whole buildings/rooms were cut into the rock. Or maybe it's a combination of both? Like there's a front area that's in the main walkway, but the rest of it is carved into the rock. I went for the first thing, but I'm fine with changing things if I need to.)

(Either or! I like the idea that some are more open than others; the only thing that's really set in stone (heh) is that they're in a narrow, easily defendable corner of the ravine. Probably down in a crevasse that has a roof. Idk how much space is in the "fortress" and how much has been carved out as the makeshift city expanded with adventurers and their needs for shelter and entertainment. There could be a deep, safe inner city zone and a larger portion that's just caverns and tunnels that has sprawled as the population grows faster than they can build walls and fortifications.
I'll have a reply up tomorrow morning. I got stuffs to do and have to make sure I sleep haha)

(Alright, sounds good! Also yay puns. That aside, I like the idea of the fortress being nestled in a crevasse with an overhang above it. Seems cool. Also, I like the idea of having an inner city that's safer and an outer city that's not so much.
And sounds good. I know my replies were slow today. Anyway, hope you sleep well.)

Lucie || Shattered Plains Fortress
Lucie was thanking the waiter for her drink when a short tiefling hopped up into the seat beside her at the bar. Even though she'd been in the Shattered Plains for a few weeks now, she wasn't accustomed yet to the wide variety of people here. The tiefling's blue-hued skin and black-on-blue whiteless eyes startled her. "Did you get a letter to meet under the sign at the Beetle's Fang inn?" she asked, speaking to Lucie.
"Oh!" Lucie exclaimed, suddenly realizing this must be one of the company's contacts. She shuffled the papers to give her a moment to gather herself, bringing the list of names back to the top. "I'm the one that sent them, actually. Lucie Sutton from Sutton Weaving." Lucie turned and extended a hand with a welcoming smile. This tiefling girl was the first to actually answer the call, after all. And Lucie would do her best to convince her to sign on with the company. Honestly, now that she had a moment to look at the girl, she wondered how she would fare in the Shattered Plains. She might have fearsome horns and a tail flicking beneath the bar stool, but she was shorter than even Lucie with a thin frame. She had to admit when she read through the list of names she was expecting rougher and more desperate contacts.
Maybe that wasn't a fair assessment, she thought. But it did take a certain strength to venture into the unknown; perhaps not all of that strength was physical.

Neleth, the Excitable Researcher Watching the woman--who appeared to be around her age--Neleth quickly adjusted the skirts of her dress to get more comfortable in the seat. She turned to face her, fighting the urge to look past the waiter and into the room beyond or watching the crowd as it passed. Instead, she studied the woman. She was curvy with dark hair and friendly eyes. Overall, the stranger was really pretty.
Still smiling at her, Neleth glanced over the papers the woman was shuffling through. She only caught a glimpse of a few words and phrases, nothing much to figure out what they said. Perhaps she could just ask later. Assuming she could remember and that the other woman was comfortable sharing that information with her. After a moment of looking over the pages, she finally pulled a list of names to the top. Neleth, of course, recognized them all. She had read over and copied them down multiple times. Once everything was settled, the woman finally introduced herself. Neleth's smiled widened as she took Lucie's hand.
"Oh, you sent the letters?! Well, nice to meet you, Lucie! I'm Neleth. Neleth Vizac, second daughter--and second youngest--of Kren and Myran Vizac, and one of the researchers from the Turquoise Researcher's guild. You've heard of the Turquiose Sea, right? Well, our guild's right by the coast, hence the name. Have I been the only one to show up so far? Have you met the others before? Has anyone else contacted you yet? Do you have any idea when everyone else is supposed to get here? If not, do you know what to look for and is there anything I can do to help?"
Neleth usually had enough self control not to bombard people she just met with a million questions. However, she couldn't help herself now. It was just all so...interesting. The Shattered Plains; Lucie Sutton who was sitting in the next seat; the opportunities for research presented before her.

Lucie || Shattered Plains; Beetle's Fang
Lucie couldn't help but smile as the excitable tiefling brought forth a slew of questions, though it only showed in her eyes as her mouth and nose were covered by a thick woolen mask brightly colored like a sunset. She quickly scanned down the list, and while Neleth's name wasn't there, there was an entry for "Vizac". "You're the first to arrive, Neleth," she said, making a mark next to her family name. "And my advisor wasn't hopeful that anyone would show up, actually. Most people here aren't looking for employment, and few other outsiders would take the risk to come here."
The Suttons must have called in favors with some others, though. The family had leverage, although she knew that leverage didn't reach much farther than Talhakcion: the middle eastern island where the Sutton Weaving held their home base and where Lucie had grown up. Though the fine textiles the Suttons produced were now shipped globally, that had only really begun in the last ten years once the northern civil war was over... Sometimes she cursed the direction of the counter-clockwise current. Maybe then she would be at a shipping outpost in the sunny southern isles instead of this loud, claustrophobic, cold stone hole in the most dangerous part of the known world.
Lucie pulled out a sheet of paper from the middle of the pack and slid it across the polished stone bar to Neleth. "Terms of employment," she explained, summarizing the somewhat wordy contract. "Any treasure you find is your own, but Sutton Estate takes exclusive access to any maps you make of the surrounding Plains. We pay by the day, competitive rates to other insurance companies, so I'm told. What we're really looking for are these, though." Lucie leaned over and flipped to the last page of the packet in front of Neleth, tapping her pen against the list of minerals. "Malachite, cinnabar, ochre, lapis, azurite and aragonite are the main minerals Sutton Estate seeks. We pay for those by the gram, though the rates change depending on the general market, as expected."
The mineral dyes were rare on the islands, but could be found plentifully in the Shattered Plains, where caverns and ravines cut deep into the earth, leaving the ores exposed. Some, like lapis, had value outside of dyes and others, like cinnabar, had magical properties. Both would be contested by other parties. Hence why the Suttons were paying so much for explorers like Neleth to make maps and collect the minerals. "Your job would mainly be to identify the minerals, map them, and then we'll send out menials to mine the larger viens. Again, paid by the day."

Neleth, the Excitable Researcher Though the lower part of Lucie's face was covered, Neleth could tell she was smiling by the way the upper part of her face lit up. Neleth smiled back as the woman answered her questions. It was surprising to find out she had been the only one who'd arrive so far. It was even more surprising to hear that people weren't interested in employment. Wasn't living in the Shattered Plains dangerous? Why wouldn't people want to create bonds with others, especially when such things would be beneficial? It was also surprising to hear people didn't want to come to the Shattered Plains. Despite the risks the land presented, it was a wonderful oppertunity to make new discoveries and learn what the Shattered Plains had to offer. Why would people pass up the privilege to explore uncharted lands?
Lucie sliding a new sheet of paper to her pulled Neleth from her thoughts. She began to read it over as the woman explained the terms of employment. As Lucie spoke, Neleth found herself growing all the more excited. Her excitement only grew as a packet was brought to her attention. Tapping on the last page with her pen, the woman mentioned the minerals they were searing for. Neleth grinned widely.
"Ah-ha! And that's why I'm the best woman for the job! While I research a lot of things--history, biology, ethics, mathmatics--my main points of interest are in geology, chemistry, and bonty. I don't mean to brag, but I'm easily one of the best geologists in the guild. I can certinaly help discover where these minerals may be. I brought some equipment with me to test the rock here, but I will need more. Luckily for me, my parents also have some contacts around here to help with that. Speaking of, I will need to stop by a place called Melfred Engineering to get said supplies. It should be nearby, and we can go after everyone else gets here."
Neleth paused as the waiter approched her. She absent-mindedly ordered water as she read over the terms of employment once more. After a few minutes of silence, the waiter brought the order and she had finished through her reread of the page. With a satisfied nod, she turned back to Lucie with a smile.
"I agree to the terms set. Is there anywhere I need to sign or is a declaration enough? Or do you want a written statement from me?"
(Sorry for the late reply. I worked most of it while at work, then I took my siblings out to dinner.
Also, just wondering, but do you also want me to get up a starter for the eastern islands in the next post?)

[[ no problems, honestly 1 reply a day is more than enough as we get rolling.
And sure! I'm down to bring some other characters in. Right now the only one that would be over there is Lachlan, but I am totally open to making more characters to get something rolling.
Speaking of which, if we want more people in the Shattered Plains party, I can throw in Nasir and Ra duo. Lucie is more of a base-mom character, I don't think she'll be going outside the fortress. If you want to throw another in we can, otherwise they'll have a party of three.
I have Kas showing as the disgruntled man in cape, if you want to have any other character go on a more lone-wolf treasure seeking kind of mission with him. Otherwise he can dip in and out when we're around town. Either or. I'm more throwing out characters to have as dynamic background figures; they don't all need to be on screen. That's why I don't mind making bunches to throw out there. ]]

(Okay, that definitely works~
Sounds good! I was going to have Taven in the east doing things and Zelwyn in the Shattered Plains. Anyway, I could probably make another character or two as well. I do have a couple of ideas floating around in my head.
Ah that makes sense and is really cool about dynamic background characters.
As I already mentioned, Zelwyn is in the Shattered Plains. I would imagine she knows the terrain/enviorment well enough to find her way around, though she's only explored/survived in a fraction of the area. She could work as a guide for Lucie's team or for Kas. I'm fine with either one.)

[[ sorry no reply yesterday! I wrote like 5k words of a short story and that was all I was going to write for the day haha My writing muscles were tired out. I tried to throw some things in here, get some people on screen. Leaving what starts to transpire with this ragtag group to you. ]]
Lucie // Nasir & Ra ;; Neleth || Shattered Plains; Beetle's Fang
Lucie pointed with her pen at the appropriate sections to sign. A general contract, a short exemption of risk from the Sutton Estate from any liabilities posed by the terrain, and a non-disclosure statement for any maps and information learned on the job. That portion was valid for the next five years, hopefully to keep any new information out of competitors hands and stop their workers from double dipping on map bounties. "That should do it," Lucie said, "I don't really like the paperwork either, I'd rather be at the loom. Good textiles speak louder than any length of pompous words."
She rubbed the fabric of her current tunic between her fingers, disappointed. It was very practical wear, not at all befitting of her station, which is usually something Lucie could appreciate. But the fabric was rough and dull and not at all flattering to her figure, and while significantly cleaner than most the adventuring types that lived in the Fortress, still made her long for the nice dresses back home. She had brought a few with her, but couldn't bear to expose any of the nicer weaves to the cold, damp, and dusty air deep in this ravine. They sat packed tightly in paper wrapping back in her rooms at the company's outpost here. Oh, but what she wouldn't give to wear Ariel's parting gift: a cheerful yellow sundress with flower embroidery so meticulous only her younger sister could have the eyes to stitch it.
Lucie looked out over the Fortress street: the most open part on the base of the ravine, a corridor of walking traffic fenced on both sides by storefronts cut into and out of the stone walls. "We're expecting a few more," she said hopefully, though she didn't know if it were true. They would have to find someone to do the work; Lucie would push the board for even better terms if that's what it took. She knew the accountants wouldn't be happy with that, but it wasn't like they had too many other options besides sending Lucie herself out there, or a herd of paper-pushers at the outpost. They had plenty of menials that would mine and retrieve the minerals, but none of them had any sort of training and couldn't be expected to return from the dangerous world outside the Fortress. It would be like tossing leaves into the fire.
But Lucie didn't feel any better sending Neleth out there, let alone by herself. She seemed capable enough. But it was dangerous, and Lucie worried there would be no one else to send with her. It was just as she was about to look away from the road and back to see if Neleth had any more questions about the terms of employment that she caught two men --boys, really-- marching pointedly their way. Her heart sunk even further. Were they desperate enough to hire children? The shorter one pulled a paper from his belt, looking from Lucie to the sign and back down to Lucie. "You're the one hiring mercs?"
She nodded, resigned. "I'm Lucie Sutton from Sutton Weaving."

(No worries! If you needed a break from writing, then you needed a break from writing. No explanation required.
Also, sounds good and I feel bad for Lucie. She wants the mission to go well, and so far has a researcher with prarically zero survival skills and a nineteen-year-old orphan and his guard to help with it.
Also, I'll probably not reply until sometime tomorrow because I have to go to bed for work.
But real quick, would you rather have Zelwyn on Lucie's mission or have her go with Kas? I'm literally fine with either, but was curious if you had any thoughts on it.)

[[ (; enjoy the sleep! tomorrow is the last day in a while I can sleep in and I am determined to enjoy it. Then it's back to 7am alarms
I think she'd pair well with Kas tbh! In the original roleplay, he was actually paired with another fae ranger so that's actually really funny that she matches his original partner so closely haha
That leaves Ra, Nasir and Neleth for the other party, unless you want to make another and add em to the group! I'm fine with just the three of them; Nasir can take care of the two academic types though it would be hilarious to have him constantly annoyed with Ra and Neleth doing smart science things and nerding out together the whole time ("Another one?" Nasir said, half-jokingly, "It was hard enough keeping Ra out of trouble without someone to give him more questions to try and find answers to.") ]]

(Yes, please enjoy it! You deserve to sleep in!
That's a funny coincidence, and sounds good. I'll get her starter up (and Taven's) when I post next.
I'll probably hold off making more characters (at least fully fleshed out ones) for the time being. I think having the small group works fine for now. Poor Nasir does have to deal with two nerds now who do science things and wander off to look at something cool. Guy probably deserves a raise or a bonus or something.)

Neleth, the Excitable Researcher Neleth nodded along as Lucie pointed to the places she needed to sign. Producing her own pen from a pocket, the woman began signing her name on the indicated lines, still listening to her companion as she spoke.
"Agreed, though in my case it would be research and the evidence to back it up as opposed to the loom. With that said, I'm sure me doing a bad job at the loom would beat out any paperwork to do. I also imagine it wouldn't be nearly as much pressure as writing up a contract. By writing up a contract, you have to make sure everything's in order, because if something is wrong--a word is missing or misspelled, there's a loophole that's been missed--then you get blamed and have to deal with multiple unhappy people. The job also seems boring. Sitting around all day just to write contracts for people? No thanks. I can barely sit still enough to write a whole report, I can't imagine how I would survive going over-" Neleth made a mocking gagging sound "-legal documents."
By the time she finished speaking, Neleth had managed to sign everything. Her signature was a bit squished, but neat with portions that looped on certain letters; a fine combination of Kani's and Maken's handwriting. Lucie answered her other question as she stared into the main walkway of the Fortress. Neleth, unaware of the worries plaguing Lucie's mind, pulled out her notebook to jot down some notes.
"That's good," Neleth replied, her focus still mostly on her notes. "I'm sure they'll be here soon enough, especially if they're coming from outside the mainland. I was supposed to be here weeks earlier, actually. In fact, I left a few days after we received the letter. However, the trip didn't go as smoothly as planned and it was diffcult to find many people who wanted to venture into the Shattered Plains. Perhaps the others have had equally bad luck as well and will be a few days late." There was silence between the two women for a moment until a new voice caught Neleth's attention.
"You're the one hiring mercs?" Neleth turned in her chair, catching sight of two newcomers. With a smile, Neleth studied the pair for a moment as Lucie introduced herself. One was a dark-skinned man who appeared to be around her height. She didn't miss the way he hovered protectively around his taller companion, clearly marking him as some sort of guard. The other was fairly tall and had tan scales going up the side of his neck as well as pointed ears. He obviously had some combination of lizardfolk and elvish ancestry. Still smiling, she held out a hand toward the pair.
"I'm Neleth Vizac, daughter of Kani, Maken, and Lon Vizac of the Turquiose Researcher's guild. I will be the geologist on this mission. It's nice to meet you."
Taven, the Crafty Magician It was midday by the time Taven reached the inn. He had checked the name given to him on the paper aganist the sign hanging outside. It was, of course, a perfect match. With a quick stretch, he headed inside and was greeted with a warm, familiar atmosphere of laughter, conversation, and drink. Taven smiled to himself as he found an empty spot and settled down, placing his bag beside his feet. He placed his foot through one of the straps to keep oppertunitsts from snatching it. If someone tried to nab it, he would catch them in the act. As he got comfortable in the wooden chair, he switched between keeping his eye on the crowd and the musician currently providing some entertainment for the inn.
It wasn't a particularly high end place. He'd stayed at far finer establishments before, with a far more high end atmosphere. He also found most of those places boring. It was usually the same musician playing the same piece with the same patrons having the same conversation. At inns like these, he never knew what he would find. From bar fights to storytellers capturing everyone's attention, it was always a fun mystery to discover. Even if these places didn't have the best rooms or most comfortable beds, they did have some of the best company.
As Taven lounged in the chair, he kept watch for his inquiry. Usually, he could be left to his own devices, traveling the islands, preforming for whoever was interested, and meeting some very fascinating individuals. Today, he wasn't hanging around the inn for his own entertainment. Instead, his parents had asked for him to meet with...someone they knew. Though, perhaps "ask" was putting it nicely. It was more if he didn't do what they asked, then they would stop putting up with his adventurous tendencies and force him into the family business; working for nobility and royalty. That was, of course, something he had zero interest in.
If he lost his freedom, he would simply...wilt away. Taven wasn't born to wilt away, and he certainly wasn't born to sit hidden from the world and wither away to nothingness. No. He would continue to adventure through the world for the rest of his time. And if keeping that freedom meant meeting with someone his parents ordered him to, then he would do it. At the very least, it was something interesting. Supposedly, they had been requested to investigate some strange occurances in the area. Some people went missing along the road, others were reported to have gained some sort of affliction. Supposedly, his contact was going to give him more information. So that was why he was at one of the most popular inns between the northern island and the middle island.
Zelwyn, the Resilient Ranger It wasn't often Zelwyn ventured into the Shattered Plains Fortress or other places like it. She usually spent her time exploring new areas within the Shattered Plains or would go back to one of her home bases hidden throughout the mainland. With her, she carried a small pack, her bow and arrows, a hunting knife, and a deer carcass thrown over her shoulder. Those who knew her--or knew about her--gave her a respectful nod, which she returned, and a wide berth. Those who didn't gwaked as she passed by or simply ignored her. She could see a few eager faces eyeing her prize hungrily. A well placed glare stopped those types in their tracks. Most of them, at least.
Fresh food--especially meat--was somewhat hard to come by in the Shattered Plains. The deeper in an outpost, fortress, or town was, the less access they had to it. Few animals wandered into the confusing network of tunnels, ravines, and caverns, and it was diffcult to keep any sort of functioning farm within the damp, cold environment. Very few places within the Shattered Plains kept livestock around, finding care for the animals to be rather diffcult and expensive. So, most crops and livestock was kept on the unprotected plateaus above. Preservation charms, like the one on the stag, could keep a corpse fresh for a while. However, they only lasted for a set amount of time and could get expensive. That in turn would lead to expensive meat, which only the most wealthy could afford.
As for whatever creatures lurked around the Shattered Plains, it was often a mixed bag. Some animals were inediable, others didn't have enough meat on them to create a substantial meal. There was also the general pickiness of travlers who ventured to the Plains too, of course. Zelwyn would never understand that. Food was food. As long as she could safely eat it, she would.
Zelwyn read signs as she made her way through the main walkway. She paused in front of a particular one; Cracked Plateaus: Ware and Supplies. Carefully balancing the stag on her shoulder, Zelwyn entered the shop. The few other customers lingering around the store eyed her for a moment before turning back to whatever they were doing. Quietly apporching the counter, the ranger placed the carcass down with a thump. Behind the counter was a bespectacled halfling. He had thick, dark hair and was clearly unimpressed with what she did.
"As promised, one fresh stag. The charm should last another day or so, which means you don't have to take it to be processed immediately." The halfling blinked at her.
"Did you really have to place the dead animal on the counter during business hours? Couldn't you have taken it to the butcher yourself, Zelwyn? What if it's diseased?"
"It's not diseased, I made sure of it. But next time, I can leave it at the butcher's for you. When they sell it to high paying customers, though, don't come crying to me." Revis grumbled something about her being frustrating but made no further argument.
"Now, I've filled my end of the bargain, Revis. It's time to fulfill yours. Where are these new arrows you've been telling me about?" Revis glanced around the room for a moment before sighing.
"Give me a moment." Zelwyn watched as he hopped off the stool and scurried to the back. A minute later he returned with a leather bundle clearly holding the ammunition he promised and an assistant to collect the stag carcass. Once gone, he unrolled the bundle and revealed twelve arrows. Zelwyn picked one up and began examining it. Surprisingly, the shaft was made of some type of lightweight metal. As she looked it over, Revis cleared his throat.
"While you're here, there's also someone I'd like you to meet. I think you can help them with what they're needing. And before you back out or refuse, at least hear him out." Zelwyn didn't say anything as she continued to study the arrow, though she shifted to get a better view around the room.
(And that took way longer than I intended.. I also went a little overboard with Zelwyn's reply, so sorry about that.
For Taven, I had no idea where exactly Lachlan's family's inn was located at, so I was just kinda vague. Is it supposed to be on the bridge connecting the north and middle eastern islands or is right by the mouth of the bridge?)

[[ I love them all ahhh <3 I'm figuring out who I want to throw in with Taven because Lachlan can probably be around for a bit but she wouldn't really be a contact kind of person. Perhaps I can introduce the vamp that turned her? That would make for an interesting character, particularly with dealing with "mysterious disease" and missing people hrmmmm? ;)
And I love the worldbuilding you have going with Zelwyn's intro that's awesome stuff! Any length that's just worldbuilding is always a-okay with me even if they take longer.
as for the inn, I was also deliberately being vague so we could move it where we need to for whatever plot we wanted to run. The idea of it being ON the bridge in some capacity could be an interesting one though! ]]

(Ah, thanks!
Honestly, I partially put all that in Tav's post because of Lachlan's stuff. Also, maybe having the vampire join in would be super interesting and cool. It could also lead to some interesting interaction between Lachlan and this hypothetical vamp character if you wanted to explore that.
That's also good to hear! I was just going to have her walk around with the stag, but I started to wonder how long it would take for her to get to the shop and everything else just kinda formed from there.
And sounds good about the inn! I wasn't entierly sure if you had anything in mind, and was being intentionally vague myself, as mentioned. Also, even if the inn itself isn't on the bridge, maybe we can have a few rest stops/small places along the bridge for travlers to stay at.)

[[ oops if there's any plot mentions in Lachlan's it's just leftovers from the other rp she was meant to be in and not anything specific for here, though honestly the plot is pretty general and totally still works in this setting! We can make it happen that way for sure. And totally! That was half my reasoning for throwing a vamp in hehe
I love reading just extra worldbuilding and character x character interaction with your own characters !! It tells so much and you can go so wild with it without having to slow down, so it's just more efficient to get big worldbuilding out that way. Totally delve into that wherever it fits and you want to explore something on your own. I love using other people's pieces to work into the setting and vibes.
ooooooh so the bridges are longer than a day's journey? that could be super interesting! There's the work of literal gods, so anything is possible. Perhaps the coasts are lined with cliffs to dissuade ferry travel, leaving the bridge as the only realistic highway between islands. . . Though I'll stop there, since we're probably going to take Tav that way and we can describe it then in detail (; ]]

(Sorry, I was talking about the vampire thing only, though I can see why you were confused. I should've been clearer. Also, there's a lot that can be done with that idea, I think.
Same here! It's so much fun, and can add extra life into the world. Like when Zelwyn and Revis were interacting, it was fun to write their interaction and kind of explore their dynamic. It's also quite fun to expand on/piggy back off of other bits and pieces other people have added and create something new in the world.
Maybe? I actually didn't consider how long travle would be, but I think it'd be cool if there were rest stops and maybe small "markets" on the bridges. Or maybe even under the bridges? But anyway, maybe some of the coasts/the coasts on certain sides of the islands aren't accessible by ferry? But anyway, as you mentioned, we can discuss it more later.)
