Watching Elfen Lied for the first time cause it was recommended to me literal years ago by someone on the old forums and I JUST remembered about it today.
In any case it is... Interesting? Ok? I can't say I like it very much tbh.

Lately I've been feeling like a lot of blah.
Stuff isn't fun anymore and I've made sure I'm fed/watered/slept/medicated/daily-vitamin'd (actually slept too much out of sheer boredom) and still it persists. Nothing holds my focus.

Just gonna copy my movie review here: Here's a hot take.
It sucked.
Like really sucked.
For being an almost 2 hour movie it sure had a lot of absolutely nothing going on. I know that periods of silence in horror movies are to build up tension but that wasn't the vibe here, it was boredom. Especially in the entire first half hour of the movie where the alien isn't even known about or an issue yet. There was plenty of time to give us some kind of world building and character building. Why do I care about these people? I didn't. In fact in the case of 2 of them, I just wanted them to hurry up and die faster because seeing them on screen was insufferable.
If they had made me care about these characters at all, I probably would have felt something when they died beyond "Damn, that's crazy." or really been scared in the long silences because that's what makes a good horror. You need build up the characters/world and then send them all through hell.
I actually dipped out of watching about 4 or 5 times because I just needed to have a brain break and do something or I was gonna fall asleep on my couch. I felt obligated to finish watching it because it's a "classic".
There were only about 3 points in the whole film I enjoyed:
The foreshadowing of coming across the alien skeleton with a hole in it's chest. I already knew that was going to happen cause that scene is pretty iconic at this point. But I can imagine that watching this film for the first time in theaters and being able to make that connection with what happened later would have been neat.
The scene where one guy is trying to catch the cat and the cat backs down because the Alien is right behind him, and then it shows the cat just silently watching him be killed. I normally don't like it when a movie avoids showing it's deaths, but this one was unique. Also several of the other close-up angles were very nice. From a purely cinematography instead of writing standpoint, this movie *is* set up with plenty of interesting scenes in mind.
Watching Ash getting his head beaten off. --Of course me enjoying his death was immediately counteracted by the absolutely dumb as shit "plot twist" that made absolutely no sense of any degree. So point revoked.

Ended up seeing Hellraiser(1987) by myself. Id write a movie review but I honestly don't know how to feel about it. The story was like a 3/10 but the visuals for the cenobites and concepts are like an 8/10. It was freaky but like... kinda boring? executed poorly? But also looking at the wiki pages has me intrigued and wanting to watch the rest of them. I dunno. This post is absolutely hilarious to me now that I'm on movie 6, have read most of the comics, and I can safely say that this is one of my biggest hyperfixations.

Oh please do tell me more. Favorite movie? The first one is definitely a little strange and not super thought out as I reviewed before. Hellraiser 2 and 3 really picks up the story though. New characters, figuring out what Hell/Labyrinth is actually like. How they drag people into opening the box in the first place. How Pinhead and other cenobites became what they are. 4 and 5 are where most if not all people think the series jumped the shark and became a cash grab. And you know, I'm not actually gonna fully deny that, they're the weirder ones that go sort of back to the first movie in a way, just Pinhead going off because someone opened the box. *~in space~* It was mildly funny though because I watched it right after watching Alien, and it HAS an Alien reference in it, which I wouldn't have caught if I hadn't seen it like the week before. So it amused me.

Oh that does sound interesting though. I wouldn't have made that connection either. Highly entertaining. What are the comics like? Mm diverse. Since Clive Barker lost the rights to his original work with it fans really took it and just ran off with ideas. There's definitely still what he wrote which is considered the "most" canon but considering something canon in the Hellraiser franchise is debatable at all. A lot of them have to do with one-shot stories about other labrys configurations (boxes) and other cenobites. Some of these configurations aren't even boxes, but "unlocked" by someones pure lust for power, or sensations. Not all cenobites were previously human and some are animals. Some of my favorite comics include one that implies Disney theme parks are partially Cenobite-run and operated. He made a deal with one so that in exchange for the land someone owned, he would provide a steady surge of people looking for "ultimate pleasure". After all... its the most fun place on earth. And makes you wonder extra what the tunnels under Disney are really for. Another one is about someone with an extreme case of leprosy who found a box and became obsessed with opening it to be able to feel anything at all. His condition gets worse enough to the point that he loses his fingers and ability to open the box, as well as most touch-sensations so he lures in other people to open it for him, and while the cenobites torture his "offering", they describe the amount of pain they are inflicting to them as a way for him to experience the sensations by imagination. This turns into a regular thing since he is luring people in regularly. The third and, quite honestly my most favorite, is a really obscure one that is basically only Hellraiser in name and theme, but uses it in such an obscure way. It just works as an analogy for how people create and how cruel the professional world and editors can be. It's... extremely visceral though. A man's labrys configuration is an extremely real looking, but lifeless baby he has made out of parts of his own flesh. He is extremely excited about his creation, but the cenobite it summons starts criticizing it, ripping off limbs and mutilating it until finally the man snaps and says that he should take the offering as a whole instead of choosing which parts it does or doesn't like, at which point the cenobite throws the entire baby in the trash, and walks off to a line of people also holding babies to mutilate, who are much more willing to let it happen. But as the analogy for creating. God I understand and appreciate it so much. Creating is so much of yourself to put out for the world and having it be criticized or not taken within context and ripped apart instead of being able to share this thing you made in its whole is a pain like nothing else.
