Character Name: Sam

"Sam," Mrs. Tripple starts, "I am so sorry about your loss. Your brother was such a wonderful person, and I know he'll be missed. If you need anything, be sure to tell me."
While the neighborly woman looks sympathetic and deeply saddened, something inside of you refuses to accept that these emotions mean anything. Indeed, to give into grief seems as though it would be quite inappropriate of you for some reason. While you are unsure as to how genuine you can be with her.
"Thanks," you say numbly "You've been a friend of our family for so long...it's only natural for you to console me...I suppose."
Mrs. Tripple rests a hand on your shoulder as you pull your jacket a bit tighter around you. The morning breeze feels especially cold today. Maybe it's the graveyard with its rows and rows of stones or maybe it's the casket disappearing into the earth, but today suddenly seems much lonelier. After a moment, Mrs. Tripple gives you a sad smile.
"You're a strong one, Sam. I remember when you and your brother were younger and the two of you nearly got trampled by Mr. Thompson's poor old horse. Your parents were both so worried. They rushed you to the doctor, who insisted that you both remain bedridden for another day, but the both of you were back to pulling that horse's tail the very next morning! And people wonder what drove that poor thing into the forest.... You've stuck it out through misery for so long, but that just goes to show that you've got a good, resilient heart, Sam."
You vaguely remember the events Mrs. Tripple is reminiscing over. You're just too distracted by the heavy thoughts it brings up.
