Figured why not. I have a thread for everything else. So I'm just gonna use this thread in a vain attempt to try and get better at German.
Currently I'm using a lot of different ways to go about actually doing this stuff. Primarily I'm using Duolingo, but also using books, help of some friends (one who is a native German and one who just speaks it as a second language), and attempting to bury myself in as much media as possible.
I'd say I'm about High School level two. Or I'm supposedly that, since I took 3 semesters of it in high school and proceeded to forget most of it. Now I'm back at roughly the same level and a bit further past that in understanding.
Could say that I'm struggling but roughly conversational. I can get the gist of most things if written out. If spoken veeery slowly I can also do the same.
Grammar is so far my biggest struggle, but slowly getting there.
So if anyone wants to hang out with me, come on in. If anyone has any corrections for things while I learn ... //clasps hands togther// Pleeeeeeeease. I need all the help I can get. XD

I've been messaging back and forth with a German lady for about 2 weeks now over some books I bought from her on German ebay. Since I don't speak German, what I've been doing is typing up my messages in English on Google Translate, then I translate it to German, then I reverse translate it back to see how it reads grammatically, fix my wording, then finally send off the correct message.

I think there are a few German-speakers on the forums too! I know someone has been posting some German warriors books from their local bookshop - which leads me to think they live there too.

Was that me? Because I'm currently hunting for more of those German Warriors books before everything goes into lockdown again. Rising numbers and all that "good" stuff are making Germany nervous. *sigh*

I don't know german very well but while I was studying it one of my teachers showed us this video. It's pretty silly but some classmates said it genuinely helped them with their congregations so hey, hope it helps I just love the video in general cause it's gold.

I took 6 years of German but have now forgotten almost all of it... Although I've been trying to kind of get a bit of it back by listening to the German cast recording of Anastasia the musical. I'm nowhere near the point of being able to translate it all, but I know the show well enough I can follow along pretty well...

I honestly did not expect this many posts when I came on today, so heck yessssss!
Hello y'all!
So I've been working on that grammar thing today. Specifically the placement of 'nicht' in a sentence. So what I've gathered today is it proceeds the word that you're negating, unless you're negating the whole sentence/what's being negated is unknown, in which case it's placed at the end of the sentence.
This is what I'm following so far, but I'm off course not 100% sure yet.
In other news, last night I started pasting household words around my living space, because as Leap posted, the 'der', 'die', and 'das' are murdering me and I'm bound and determined to start memorizing them somehow.

XD I've just been listening to various artists and trying to read Warriors in German.

Are you looking for hardcover, paperback, or does it matter? Like I said, I just ordered a very large shipment of German books (41 to be exact), and I had to ship them by sea (it was about $125 cheaper that way). I am going to have a few duplicates - 4 of the mangas, 3 DOTC, 1 Guide, and a couple of Super Editions. The mangas are paperback, and the rest are hardcover. I think I remember directing you to some DOTC books before, but I can't remember if you got them or not. Also, I'm not sure if beltz.de is getting ready to close shipping again or not, but that's where I'm planning to get the ones I'm missing. Bookdepository.com also gets some in every once in a while.

Today in learning German, I make the observation from my flashcards that a lot of fruit use 'die' excluding apples and peaches, which use 'der.' I need to look further into this, but I'm gonna assume for now that if I run into a fruit not listed in my flashcards, it's gonna be 'die ___' just from experience thus far.

Also rote, rot, and roter is confusing me and I know there's a grammar point that still isn't sticking and I know it's the various cases part of German grammar, but that is really having trouble sticking in my head thus far, so continue practicing it is and hope some lightbulb will turn on like it did for 'kein' and 'nicht.'

I'm trying to think of other ways to make learning go a bit quicker. I'm thinking right now "plaster words all over my room" but I'm trying to think of more fun ways.
Anyone got any show recommendations that are in German?

I just found out that besides the English Audiobooks for the Warriors series, there are also the German ones on Youtube. I'm still mad that my edgy thirteen year old self sold them during a particular "being way too old for these dang cat books" phase because listening to them now made me realize that they are very good when it comes to the narrators speaking in clear voices and still conveying enough emotions for the story to be told in a captivating manner.
Here is the audiobook of the first book Into the Wild/In die Wildnis (Part/CD One) for an example:
As for German shows, if you have Netflix or any other streaming service there should be an option to change languages and if German isn't there some German Anime Dubs can also be found on Youtube. Most shows that are produced by Germany and in German as the original language usually lack subtitles and can be hard to follow because the pacing is either too fast or the actors sometimes mumble certain sentences.

The fact that I've read the book rather recently in English helps. So far I've been listening to various parts over and over and trying to pick out new things, but I've surprisingly been able to work out good chunks of dialogue, so I'm really pleased about that!

I used rosetta stone to learn german years ago. If you can get that (i think we might've pirated it but idk lol) it works wonders. It even has conversational pieces that you can do using a microphone.

Very nice! I'll look into it. I'm trying to work out other things I can do. I've been learning vocabulary through a place called 'Drops.' Now it's just mostly finding other places to rephrase grammar.

Today features 'struggling with grammar you already know.' But also the sweet, sweet feeling of at least feeling like you've got the basics and just have to think a bit harder about the rest.
