โSince you showed up here,โ Nico shrugged, a half smile tugging at his lips. โSeems only fair that I get to visit your world since youโve been to mine.โ He knew it didnโt really work like that, but Kelsier had managed to save his life here. It seemed only right that he be able to visit Kelsierโs if only to let him see Mare one more time. If only so he could meet Mare. He may not have believed sheโd like him much, but he still wanted to meet her. If only to tell her thank you. He doubted Kelsier would have become the man he looked up to if it hadnโt been for her influence. โHonestly, anywhere I wonโt be hunted by monsters every second of every day sounds like a vacation to me,โ he admitted, shrugging and nudging his jacket back a little on his shoulder with his ear. โBesides, fighting your fight sounds like a better deal than fighting no fight at all anymore.โ He had wanted an end to the war, of course, but he was a weapon. A weapon didnโt have much use in times of peace. โHmโฆ ohโฆ Earth days are twenty four hours. Twelve-ish hours of sunlight, twelve-ish hours of darkness. Each hour is sixty minutes, and each minute is sixty seconds andโฆ every second isโฆ oneโฆ twoโฆ threeโฆ yeah. You get it, probably.โ

Kelsier didnโt reply immediately, the urge to quip right back and fall into the easy rhythm theyโd had for so long now tugging at him. But something else tugging back. Something he didnโt know how to explain, or even if he wanted to. โYouโd be disappointed, Iโm afraid,โ he said finally, keeping his voice as light as he could. โThere are plenty of monsters there, too. Believe me, Iโve met them. Besides, if you came there, who would give me an excuse to visit here again?โ He touched the trunk again, then shifted, pulling himself just a little bit higher, ignoring the way the branch creaked dangerously under his weight. โYou know, I canโt wait to see what your night looks like without the mists. Itโs strange enough to walk around with no hint of ash on the ground, and ash isnโt a friend to anyone.โ He couldnโt imagine a night without mist. It was likeโฆwell. He supposed it would have been like imagining green plants and flowers he could cup in his hand, before the House had turned that into a reality. It had ruined him, really. Tasting his dream had only made him that much more determined to claim it.

โI think the biggest difference between your monsters and mine is that yours are human,โ Nico replied quietly, shrugging just a little bit. โI meanโฆ and the fact that mine have no reason to act like anything other than monsters. Itโs justโฆ how they are. Itโs been in their blood and minds for centuries, andโฆ and some of them donโt have to be monsters, I guess, but after thousands of years of being killed by heroesโฆโ he trailed off, giving a small shrug. He was going to get himself into a philosophical rabbit hole if he kept going, and he had never been the biggest fan of philosophy. โYouโre changing the subject,โ Nico noted, but he was okay with letting it drop for now. One day, he would see Kelsierโs world. He would help as much as he possibly could. He would make sure that Kelsierโs war was won, even if he had to go there to do it. โI never said I would want to stay in your world forever. Just that I think it would be neat to visit.โ He fell silent, peering up at the sky as though he could make the night appear just by wishing for it. โI think youโll like it,โ he admitted after a moment, glancing down below him before hopping smoothly down onto a lower branch. โBut thereโs a lot more for you to see before we get there.โ

โTheyโre monsters,โ Kelsier replied, the words quiet but certain. โHuman or not, itโs all they are. Have you ever befriended one of your monsters? Ever felt like there was any other way an interaction with them could go?โ StillโฆVinโs accusations echoed in his ear. Sheโd had his fury in her eyes as sheโd said itโฆthe fury that could only come from injustice. Only this time, hers had been aimed at him. He didnโt live as a regular Skaa would. He hadnโt realized how used to safety heโd become, but sheโd been right about that. His own life mirrored a noblemanโs more than a Skaaโs, now, in most practical ways. He shook his head a little. These werenโt thoughts he needed to dwell on, now, and they certainly werenโt thoughts he wanted to burden Nico with. Not yet, at least. โI am,โ he agreed, smiling a little. โAnd I know youโre not going to let it go that easily. Weโll talk about it, alright? But itโs only my first day here, and I havenโt even been inside a McDonaldโs yet.โ He turned, watching him descend, a small smile touching his expression. โI believe you promised me French fries.โ

โIโฆ well, yes,โ Nico admitted after a long moment, staring up at Kelsier. โThere are some who would be called monsters who have proven themselves to be otherwise. There was Iapetus, the Titanโฆ his memory was erased when he was pushed into the River Lethe, and Iโฆ wellโฆ I visited him. I tried to keep him company, because thereโs nothing worse than being alone when you arenโt sure who youโre supposed to be. Heโsโฆ heโs trapped in Tartarus now, but heโs no monster. Even when he started to remember. Even when his brothers found him and tried to convince him, he was no monster. And there are others. Ella the harpyโฆ she memorized bits of prophecy. Sheโs kind, kinder than you would think a harpy could be, even though most would just see her as a monster because of what she is. And Tyson, heโs a cyclops. It would be easy for him to be cruel like his brethren, but heโs not. Even among monsters, not everyone is monstrous.โ Nico let the thought hang in the air before he hopped further down, trying to make his path as smooth and easy as possible. It was much easier to climb up a tree than it was to go down one. โWe can get McDonalds,โ he added, stopping just long enough to stare up at Kel. โAre you hungry?โ

โI wish it were always that easy,โ Kelsier said wryly, shaking his head just a little bit at that. The fact that there were monsters who werenโt necessarily enemies all the timeโฆwell. It wasnโt his world. As much as he had his doubts about it, he knew monsters and noblemen werenโt actually the same. There were parallels, to be sure. But if anyone represented the nobility in Nicoโs world, he thought it would be the gods, not the other monsters. As a matter of fact, he wouldnโt have been all that surprised to learn that the other monsters werenโt completely to blame for their part in it. He watched Nico begin to make his way down, one eyebrow cocked at his slow, careful progress. And then he leaned casually to the side. The fall took a remarkably short time. He was used to leaping from buildings that would have probably been considered skyscrapers in this world, from city walls and his own steel-pushes. The tree, though admittedly much taller than any tree heโd ever seen before, was nothing in comparison. He landed lightly, using just a little bit of pewter to make it look effortless, and turned to smile up at Nico. โI could eat,โ he called up, as though heโd merely been waiting on the ground the whole time. โAlso, if you jump, Iโll catch you. Just so you know.โ He did have to admit he was impressed with Willโs stitches. As far as he could tell, he hadnโt torn a single one.

Nico looked up, eyes widening as he watched Kelsierโs descent from the tree. It wasnโt so much climbing down as it was graceful falling (and Nico was grateful that Kelsier had done it in New York City and not somewhere that wasnโt quite so used to weird things. As it turned out, Kelsier was just the right amount of weird to fit in instead of drawing attention to himself. Nico had to stifle a laugh at that fact - he had a feeling Kelsier wouldnโt much like the fact that he actually fit in). โYou really like showing off, donโt you,โ he commented, rolling his eyes just a little bit. He wouldnโt have traded in Kelsierโs showmanship for anything, although he felt well within his rights to make fun of it. It was Nicoโs world - he was the one who was supposed to be showing things off. โYou know, I could just shadow travel down. Make it look as effortless as your allomancy.โ He wouldnโt actually do it, no matter how much he threatened. He wanted to be able to use his powers freely again, but he needed to find a way for them to stop eating him alive first. He shook the thought off, then eyed Kelsier for a long moment. It didnโt take more than a second for him to decide that jumping was worth it. Nico was out of the tree in less than a moment, hurtling towards the ground and trusting that Kelsier would be underneath him to break his fall.

โThat surprises you?โ Kelsier replied, grinning up at his son with more satisfaction than anyone deserved to get from falling out of a tree. He doubted he fit in here, but he didnโt fit in even in his own world. He prided himself on it, in factโฆbeing an element of chaos in an otherwise orderly system. It was always nice to be needed, after all. โYes, you could,โ He continued, shading his eyes so he could see Nico better. โBut I seem to recall you telling me weโre meant to blend in. Besides, you know perfectly well Iโd go ahead and use the rest of my pewter if you did.โ Heโd have done it, too. But he knew Nico wouldnโt really use shadow travel like thatโฆneither of them had much of a self preservation instinct, perhaps, but they were both very good at staying alive without one. They were reckless, not stupid. And then Nico was falling, and Kelsier moved, guided by instinct more than anything else. The thrill of being trusted so completely by Nico never really went away, no matter how much time had passed since it had been won againโฆNico, trusting him to catch him. Nico, being alright with what would happen when he did. He caught him effortlessly, not even needing to burn any pewter to steady himself from the impact. He grinned at him, pride and everything else filtering through the expression for just a moment before he set him down lightly on the ground and dusted himself off.

โNot in the slightest,โ Nico shot back, a tiny smile pulling at his lips. Kelsier wouldnโt be Kelsier without the showmanship, and Nico like this dad exactly as he was. He wouldnโt have ended up feeling how he did about Kelsier if it werenโt for some of the defining characteristics of the man. Even if that meant he had an obligation to roll his eyes and remind Kelsier he wasnโt as cool as he thought he was sometimes. (Even if the things he did were, secretly, very cool). โIโm lucky,โ Nico replied, something like mischief dancing over his features. โI can do however much magic I want, and nobody here will notice a thing. If you tried to do the same thing, thoughโฆ well, I donโt know if the Mist would shield your Allomancy. And Iโm not sure itโs something we want to risk in the middle of New York.โ He thought for a moment as he regained his balance, not pausing in his thoughts for even a second as he was caught and set back down. โWe could go upstate and convince someone that youโre a cryptid, and then we could see if the Mist works. Thanks, by the way.โ Nico brushed himself off, shaking a few stray leaves out of his hair. โFor now, though,โ he amended, glancing around as though to determine which way might be the best path for McDonalds, โIโm about ready for you to taste test a Big Mac.โ

โThat seems unfair, somehow,โ Kelsier noted. โWith me being the only Mistborn, out of the two of us. Maybe Iโll just have to make a friend out of your Mist, too, then.โ They werenโt entirely the same thing, he knew. But he had to admit there were similaritiesโฆboth of their mists hid them, protected them, kept certain people from finding them when they didnโt want to be found. And even if Nicoโs wasnโt an actual, physical mist - at least not one that could be seen - he liked to think it would recognize him as something to protect, anyway. โCryptic?โ He continued, tasting the word curiously as Nico continued, trying to get the pronunciation just right. He wasnโt convinced heโd succeeded. โOr we could just see if anyone notices a few flying coins here and there. Itโs not like theyโd be able to tell it was me doing it, would they?โ He was willing to leave that to another time, though. For nowโฆhe was more interested in seeing whether McDonalds deserved its reputation, not to mention its status as the only thing he could really remember Nico reliably saying heโd eaten. โThat sounds dreadful,โ he said brightly, grinning at the name. โWhat a terrible name for a food. Itโs like calling your soup Slow Trinam or Tall Vinele. Mac is a common name here, isnโt it?โ

โI donโt think the Mist is friends with anyone,โ Nico replied with a small shrug. โBut it does tend to be helpful in making sure we donโt getโฆ I donโt know, carted off to mental institutions or anything? I donโt know. It keeps us safe and mortals sane. Itโs just a good thing you can see through it.โ Nico hadnโt stopped to consider what it might have been like if the Mist had blocked Kelsierโs sight. Nico might have ended up in Tartarus againโฆ he said a quick prayer of thanks to whatever deity ensured that Kelsier had been able to help him. And another quick prayer that the Mist would block Kelsierโs mischief from the view of the world. He wasnโt sure his world was ready for any Mistborn, let alone Kelsier. โYou really, really like tempting fate,โ Nico teased lightly, rolling his eyes affectionately. He had gotten used to Kelsierโs nonsense a long time ago, and he wouldnโt trade the Kelsier he had now for anything. โWe can talk more about you shooting coins random places over McDonalds. Regardless of how stupid you think Big Mac is as a name for food. It tastes good, and it comes from the name of the chain. Like McNuggets. Itโs basically the same thing. Besides, fast food places here have weird names anyway. Like Smashburger. Which doesnโt sound appetizing in the slightest.โ

Nico had a point. Kelsier hadnโt thought of what could have happened if he hadnโt been able to see through itโฆwould he have been able to help? Would he have been able to fight back, if he couldnโt understand what he was fighting? It didnโt matter now, though. He could see through it, and as far as he knew, that wasnโt something that ever changed. โOh, Iโm just very thorough,โ the Mistborn assured him, lips quirking up into a small, only slightly arrogant smile. โItโs always a good idea to see what your limits are. Besides, itโs not as though anyone could trace it back to me. In fact, itโs probably the least dangerous thing Iโve ever wanted to do.โ He really was looking forward to McDonaldโs, though. Heโd heard enough about it since heโd met Nico, and though the House had gifted him with the experience of powder hot chocolate, it had really been neglecting the possibility of French fries. โMcNuggets,โ he repeated, trying out the word. โSmโฆsmaaaโฆsmash burger? Smashโฆyouโre right, thatโs even worse.โ

โIโd tell you youโre insane,โ Nico replied, a ghost of a smile touching his face, โbut Iโm pretty sure youโre already well aware.โ If it had been anyone else, Nico might have been annoyed with the recklessness. He might have tried to perform damage control, butโฆ as much as Kelsier needed someone to perform that role, it was never going to be Nico. Nico trusted him too much for that. He had chosen to see him as his dad for a reason, and believing he needed to perform damage control would have negated that reason. โYou donโt have to worry about the vowels too much,โ Nico replied after a moment, shoving his hands in his pockets and looking up at him as he began to walk away from the tree and towards the fabled golden arches he had waxed poetic about forโฆ probably way too long. He might have liked the food, but that didnโt mean Kelsier was going to. They werenโt even โgoodโ french fries by a lot of peopleโs standards. โYou should hear how some people here pronounce vowels. You can go all over the country and hear some really strange pronunciations. Your accent might not be super familiar, but that doesnโt mean you have to work to pronounce every vowel the way I do. I probably pronounced things wrong based on the IPA or whatever it is. Smashburger - the way you said it - is close enough.

Kelsier gave a light laugh, both at the words and at the hint of a real smile he could see on Nicoโs face, even without looking at him directly. โWell, that goes without saying. We both know my sanity fled to the hills a very long time ago, if it was ever truly there to begin with. But I swear not to cause any more mayhem than strictly necessary, unless it happens to be your idea first. Iโm far too interested in the other sorts of thrills this world might have to offer to ruin them as carelessly as that.โ He grinned, skipping ahead enough to walk backwards for a few paces, as they approached the arches - which were, notably, yellow, not real gold - and left the trees. The leaves still drifted gently around them in the breeze, and he couldnโt quite keep his eyes from wandering to them as they fell, butโฆthere would be time to let all of this sink in. โFair point,โ he said after a second, his tone turning just a little more serious as he considered that. โThereโs actually some variation between cities on Scadrial, too. But I rather like your way of pronouncing things.โ
