โItโs odd, to think that Luthadel is static,โ Nico murmured after a moment, glancing around to watch the hustle and bustle of Times Square. It was too crowded for his tastes normally, but he was fond of it in small doses. He really did like people. He liked humanity. He liked how they existed, how they moved in and about each other, how they managed to coexist, thousands of different lives interweaving for just a moment as they passed each other in the square. Thousands of lives that may or may not ever touch again. It wasโฆ a little bit like magic, though Nico would never have said that out loud. He wasnโt a poet. โThe only cities Iโve ever really been in are ones that thrive on tourism. Venice didnโt used to be a tourist town, I guess, but it definitely was one by the time I was old enough to understand it,โ he explained, pulling lightly on the hem of his shirt as he thought. โI canโt imagine a town where the people who live there stay all the time, and thereโs nobody new moving in. I guessโฆ thatโs sort of what small towns are like, here. Itโs not at all what big cities are like.โ There was a lot about Kelsierโs world that was odd to Nico. A lot of things he knew he would struggle to understand for a long time. Nico shook the thought away โ it was interesting, but Kelsier was right. It wasnโt something he could spend too long focusing on. It wasnโt something he knew enough to ramble about. โZeus could hear us if he wanted to,โ Nico replied, distracted. He had almost forgotten he was speaking in Scadrial instead of English. โIf he listened to us for long enough he might be able to figure out what weโre saying, but he canโt justโฆ instantly translate it or anything. Heโs powerful, but heโs not the House. If he were listening, he would have no idea what we were talking about, except that weโve said his name a few times.โ

Kelsier wasnโt used to this sort of magic. His streets werenโt filled with lives briefly touching, never to exist in the same area again. It wasnโt as peaceful, or quiet. There was death, mostly. He was sure there was more, but he had a hard time seeing it when the death never went away. He wasnโt used to howโฆsafe this was. He was rarely safe. He doubted he was actually safe now, but of all the unfamiliar faces he could see, none were frightened. These were no people who were used to fearing for their lives. He knew Nico had made a point of saying this world wasnโt perfect. But Kel would have given a lot to see the Skaa look half as relaxed and happy. โIโd like to see Venice,โ Kelslee mused, glancing at Nico. โYou arenโt using Shadow travel for it, though.โ He let himself think about Zeus. He wasnโt supposed to kill him, but Zeus himself didnโt need to know that. He smiled a little at the thought. He planned on winning this bet, and thenโฆwell, theyโd have to see. He couldnโt imagine he wouldnโt find a way. Maybe he could goad Zeus into helping him. That would be fun. โAh, good. And he has no reason to be trying to hear us,โ he said cheerfully. โI still have the element of surprise. Have you ever actually seen him in a fight? Or does he just send children cryptic prophecies and let them handle things?โ

โDamn,โ Nico replied good naturedly, casting a brief look at Kelsier. โI was planning on disobeying everything you and Will Solace have told me and transporting you and I all the way to Venice because I have no regard for my own personal safety, even when it comes to frivolous matters.โ He made sure to keep his voice carefully deadpan as he spoke, though the hint of a smile was peeking through his lips. He knew he had risked his life enough times that it was a valid concern, but he wasnโt going to risk shadow travel for something as frivolous as a trip to Venice. If Kelsier wanted to go, they would either have to go by plane or spend a few weeks on a boat. He had a feeling that Kelsier would prefer the boat, especially after how he had reacted to the one time he had been on a plane. That was a memory that Nico didnโt want to make Kelsier repeat โ the room had been exceedingly unpleasant. โOne day,โ Nico managed, his voice more genuine. โOne day, when itโs safer for demigods to go to the Old World. Then maybe I can show you Venice. Iโll have to find a sfer way than shadow travel, thoughโฆ I donโt think youโd like many of the ways that are currently available.โ He fell silent after a moment, considering that and the question of Zeus at the same time. He highly doubted that the god was paying them much attention, butโฆ it was better to assume he was under constant scrutiny than to say something that could get the gods to smite him. He wasnโt too worried about that, though. The gods owed him for a lot. โIโve seen him fight before,โ Nico admitted reluctantly, arms crossing. โThat doesnโt mean Iโm going to say anything that might give you a tactical advantage.โ

Kelsier smiled cheerfully at Nico as he spoke, an edge of satisfaction leaking into his expression. โI thought as much,โ he returned airily, moving ahead just a little so he could walk backwards, facing Nico. The fact that it was crowded didnโt bother him much. As long as he didnโt make anyone mad enough to make Nico uncomfortable, he was unperturbed by the others. Thoughโฆhe didnโt think he could ever have gotten used to this sort of crowd. A filthy, terrified mob was the closest heโd ever seen, and it wasnโt close at all. โOne day,โ he agreed, turning to walk forwards again. โUntil then, thereโs plenty to see here, Iโm sure. Iโd like to see all the places you go when you visit here. Actually? I want to see everything. Maybe youโll see something new, too.โ He fell silent a long moment, thinking. Not quite scheming, though not too far off. He had several thoughts about the things heโd do, if he ended up in a room full of gods. He was fairly certain everyone, including Nico, would be surprised if it happened. A smirk touched his features at that thought. He really did hope it would happen. โYou know, if I didnโt know any better, Iโd say you just wanted me to lose,โ he said finally, looking at Nico again. โEspecially since youโre withholding information that could, potentially, save my life. You never know what could happenโฆโ

โNew York is big enough that if anyone says theyโve seen the whole city, theyโre lying. Even elderly people who have lived here their entire livesโฆ the city is constantly changing, too. What was here when they were young might not be here anymore, and whatโs here now wasnโt here for most of their lives. I guessโฆ the point is that if I donโt see something new, Iโll be very, very surprised. Or Iโll be lying.โ Nico glanced at Kelsier, well aware that he was rambling. Around most people he might have been self-conscious about it. He would have mumbled an apology and tried to stop speaking so much, but with Kelsierโฆ it felt safe to justโฆ ramble. It felt like Kelsier was actually interested in listening to him. Nico wasnโt used to people who were truly interested in what he had to sayโฆ โI doubt you can see everything, but Iโll show you as much as I can. And not just the touristy stuff. Iโll show you the sides of the city that the locals would rather keep to themselves. The places tourists donโt think to look, because theyโre hidden, or because they havenโt been here long.โ How long did they have here? Nico didnโt know for sure, but he knew he was going to cram as much as possible into whatever time they did have. Kelsier deserved to see as much of the city as possible. Shadow travel may not have been an option, but they could still get around decently quickly if they took the right transportation. โI donโt want you to lose,โ he added after a moment. โItโs a fight I donโt want you to have in the first place. If you donโt challenge Zeus, youโll never need to know how to beat him. So justโฆ donโt challenge him. Please.โ

โWhat a fascinating world you live in,โ Kelsier mused, shaking his head in wonder. โTo have a place like this, growing and changing like a living thing. A city that doesnโt stay the same from one life to the next. I knew it was more alive than anything on Scadrial, but I didnโt realize in how many ways that was true.โ He didnโt mind the rambling, of course. It was a habit Nico seemed to have always had, and he was grateful it hadnโt been crushed out of him by certain others, who had less appreciation for the incredible person Nico di Angelo was. Kelsier may have had a lot to say most of the time, but he had a crew, too. Heโd had one even before Hathsin, even if it hadnโt been precisely the same people. The point was the same. He knew how to listen when he wanted to, and when it came to Nico, that was always. โWill they be irritated if Iโm clearly a tourist in a place tourists arenโt supposed to be?โ He asked with interest. โSince theyโll probably be able to tell.โ If heโd known what a camera was, he might have asked for one now. Whether that was to complete the look or to actually take pictures, however, was anyoneโs guess. He didnโt know that cameras existed, however, so he didnโt mention it. He hesitated as Nico continued, looking at him. A slightly more serious expression crossed his features. Heโd have preferred to be somewhere a little less busy for that. It wasโฆnot quite as lighthearted as most of their conversations in this trip had been so far. He tried to decide how best to reply. โItโs not as simple as that,โ he said finally, giving a tiny sigh. โHe could always challenge me, for one thing. He wouldnโt at this moment, probably. Why would he? But it could happen.โ He looked at Nico, eyes intense, though he didnโt slow his pace. He wasnโt going to get Nico yelled at, whatever else he did. โTrust me. Please?โ

โNew York is one of the most alive cities in the world,โ Nico agreed with a small nod. โI meanโฆ itโs called the City that Never Sleeps, by some, and itโs an accurate enough name. But youโre right. It really does learn and grow as more and more people come in and the population shifts. We also have people leaving all the time for various reasons. The people who live in New York today will not be the same people who live in New York tomorrow, and the city will change around them. The city will change because of them. A good city has to work for and be shaped by its people. I doubt Scadrial is like that, but I think New York is, at least culturally.โ It was odd to Nico that there was no diversity of cultures in Kelsierโs world. They were all from the same place. They were all supposed to have the same beliefs, because there was only one religion left. The others had all been squashed out. Were there traditions that continued that hadnโt been made by the Lord Ruler? โI donโt think theyโll be irritated, no,โ Nico replied after a moment, shaking his head. It was easier to think about that than the really serious things. โI meanโฆ they might give you a few funny looks as long as where you are isnโt illegal, but they wonโt be annoyed. They might actually think itโs good that a tourist is seeing the parts of New York that are actually real rather than just a performance for tourists.โ He looked ahead, shoving his hands in his pockets as he continued to walk, ducking around a woman whose clothes were painted on. โI see what you mean,โ Nico said after a moment, turning a little so he could search Kelsierโs expression. โI really donโt want you challenging Zeus, though. Doโฆ do you promise that you just want to know for self-defense?โ The concern lacing his voice was more obvious than he had intended it to be. โItโs notโฆ that I donโt think you could beat him. Itโs justโฆ I donโt want to worry about you taking that risk. Heโs powerful, and there are a lot of people who will fight for him if he asks, or if heโs in danger. Andโฆ and I donโt know if you could take an entire pantheon.โ

โThe Lord Ruler does everything he can to stomp that out. He stomped out every other sort of culture he could find, and erased the other religions so heโd be the only god anyone even knew about. And it worked, technically. Heโs been ruling a long time. There have been rebellions before, of course, but theyโve never really stood a chance, and deep down, they knew it. Severely outnumbered, outplanned, outmaneuvered. You know that Marsh was part of the rebellion before I was, right? He quit because he didnโt see any point. Most people will eventually give up if they see no other option, and the Lord Ruler makes sure to eliminate every one of them. You donโt have to worry about being overthrown if no one believes itโs possible to overthrow you.โ He shook his head, about to continue and instead doing a quick double take as he realized the person he had just passed was not in fact wearing actual clothing, but paint. Right, Nico had warned him that was a thing hereโฆhe turned back ahead, a small, perplexed frown on his features as he tried to understand what would possess someone to do that. Who had been the first? Why had people decided to follow their example? It felt like it defeated the purpose a little, but he didnโt care enough to devote any more energy to it, so he let it go. โWhy are there places that are just for tourists to go if the people that live here would like the tourists to see the other places?โ He asked, glancing at Nico instead. โThat seems counterintuitive. Why not just make everything real instead?โ He shrugged a little. New York seemed to be coping perfectly fine without his help. Even if he probably wouldnโt ever quite understand it. He focused on Nico again instead. He could see Nico was serious about thisโฆhe didnโt want Kelsier to fight Zeus if he could get around it. This wasnโt the House. Not that the House didnโt have consequencesโฆhe tugged his brain away from that thought. โHonestly, Iโd love to punch him,โ Kelsier admitted, not looking away from Nico, his expression serious. โI really would, and heโd deserve it. But no, Nico, I wonโt challenge him. Iโd just rather have the ability to fight back against any enemy, generally speaking.โ

โI didnโt know that, actually,โ Nico murmured, eyes wide as he looked up at Kelsier. He had heard a little bit about Marsh, but he hadnโt actually known that he had been part of the rebellion before Kelsier had made it his life goal. It was odd to think of a Kelsier who wasnโt dedicated to taking down the Lord Ruler. It was even stranger to think of a Kelsier who hadnโt been part of a revolutionary effort, no matter how small. It was hard to admit that Hathsin had changed Kelsier, but it definitely had. For the better, in many ways, butโฆ maybe it wasnโt all good. It was likely that the Kelsier from before Hathsin would never have thought of Nico as a son, butโฆ would Kelsier be happier? He would still have Mare, but he may never have come up with his crazy plan to overthrow the Lord Ruler. He may never have become hope. โNobody believes heโs mortal, do they?โ Nico asked after a moment, and it made sense. If a man had lived for a very long time and had been unable to be brought down by rebellions, eventually people would start to believe that he couldnโt be killed. He was a dictator. He was cruel and he kept them hopeless for a reason. He spread a doctrine that was probably more full of lies than it was truths, and people believed it. Not Kelsier, though. Had he ever believed it? Had his belief that the Lord Ruler could be killed come entirely from his time in Hathsin? It seemed possible that Kelsier would have gone mad without a final goal. Nico could imagine him picking one that seemed impossible to achieve and clinging to it because it was the only thing keeping him alive. Nico had experienced that himself. โIf the tourists go where the locals go, then the locals will eventually leave, because the tourists tend to be obnoxious. Especially in large numbers. So they want some tourists to see the city as it should be, as it is for the locals, but not all of them at once,โ Nico replied, distracted. His thoughts were still on the Lord Ruler, though he knew there was nothing he could do to change Kelsierโs world. There were, however, more important things to focus on. If Kelsier actually had to fight Zeusโฆ Nico didnโt like it, but he would rather Kelsier be prepared than unprepared. Even if he suspected Kelsier would just as soon challenge the god as be hunted down by him and need to defend himself. โWhat, exactly, do you want to know about Zeus?โ

Kelsier glanced at Nico, less surprised that he hadnโt spoken much about Marsh than he expected to be. He hadnโt exactly gone on about the crew either, had he? He talked about his world, and Nico did know who was in his crew and what they were generally like, but he hadnโt said much about his brother. Nico knew about him. Nico probably had some idea of what he was like, even. Did he know Marsh, too, had loved Mare? Kelsier doubted it. He couldnโt remember ever saying it. โMarsh? No, I don't suppose he does seem very mortal. They call him Ironeyes, you know, for his piercing stareโฆโ He grinned at Nico, then let the expression fade and shook his head a little. โNo, they donโt. He calls himself a god, and itโs easy enough to believe him. Itโs much harder to dare call him what he is - a simple tyrant. A man with more power than is good for him.โ He would fix that. But not yet. He had the eleventh metalโฆit had to work. It had to be the answer. There were still secrets, more than he knew how to find, let alone answer, but he didnโt need to uncover them all to uncover the one that would end this. And if notโฆhe still had his backup plan. Everything was in place. He could die, but he would never lose. He considered the reply, then shrugged. It made senseโฆthey wanted their privacy, still. It wouldnโt do to have a thousand unfamiliar faces every day, staring in amazement at the things you considered commonplace. It would get old, eventually. At least Kelsier would still be allowed to see them. He turned his attention to Zeus instead, and what exactly would be most useful to know about the god. Nico wouldnโt know how Allomancy might affect him, of course, but he could answer most of Kelsierโs other questions. โWhat does he fear?โ He asked thoughtfully. That seemed like a good place to start.

Nico watched Kelsier, arms crossing at the joking response. That wasnโt what he had been asking, though he knew why Kelsier had tried to make a joke of it. Kelsier may have been the most impressive person Nico had ever met, but he was still just a man. There was only so much he could do, and nobody knew how to kill the Lord Ruler. What was the difference between a man and a god? The gods in this world could be killed. They could be trapped in Tartarus and prevented from respawning. They could be killed and punished just like any human, it would just take a lot of effort and more skill than most mortals had. Was the Lord Ruler any different? Nico knew that Kelsier had a secret weapon, but they didnโt know if that weapon was going to work. He pushed the thought away. Kelsier was going to save his world. Nico had no questions about that. If anyone could, it was going to be Kelsier. Nico had saved his world, so it was Kelsierโs turn now. Kelsier had always been more competent than Nico anyway. โYouโre going to defeat him,โ Nico whispered, not looking away from Kelsier. He knew that Kelsier believed he could do it (or at least pretended to believe he could), but Nico had a feeling he was less confident than he sounded. Even if that wasnโt the case, having someone elseโs belief could never hurt. It was, admittedly, easier to think about Zeus. It was uncomfortable to consider that there may not actually be that many differences between the king of the gods and the Lord Ruler. They were both self-appointed deities, it was just that Zeus seemed to try a little bit harder to be fair. He did, after all, have to share the world. Most people didnโt believe in him anymore. โI have no idea,โ Nico said honestly, giving a small shrug. โI donโt have deep conversations with the gods about what they like or fear. I can imagine he doesnโt want to lose his throne, though. His biggest threats are Poseidon and Hades.โ

Kelsier knew he was only a man. He was mortal. He was doomed to fall, if not because of his own plan, then because there was no avoiding it. He didnโt know if there was an afterlifeโฆhe had his doubts. Once he was dead, he had to assume that would be it. That was why he needed to make sure his crew had all they needed, in case it happened before the Lord Ruler fell. A plan within a plan. He knew they would hate him for itโฆdragging them into a revolution and forcing them all to see it through. Irresponsible, as always. They would understand. Or if notโฆthey would do what needed to be done anyway. He looked at Nico, meeting his eyes at the words. Nico knew he believed in himself. He knew he could probably do with a little bit less belief in himself, at times. He rolled his eyes at it often enough, after all. But maybeโฆhe knew more than that, too. He didnโt know the fallback plan. Hopefully, he never would. But that didnโt mean he didnโt know the doubts that whispered in his ears, sometimes. He smiled a little, one of his more genuine ones. โI know,โ he replied, and he meant it. โBut thanks for believing it, too.โ He looked away again, considering Zeus. Was he better than the Lord Ruler? Kelsier didnโt have enough experience to know. He couldnโt be any worse, at least. โI see,โ he mused, his tone thoughtful. โThat makes sense. Fight a god with another god, and you never even have to show your face until itโs over.โ

Nico gave one of his rare, genuine smiles (though they werenโt so rare around Kelsier). He didnโt know if his belief helped alleviate any of Kelsierโs doubt, butโฆ Kelsier had believed in him when he was doing the impossible. The least Nico could do was return the favor. He glanced away, moving along the street towards the Empire State Building. They could, of course, get back on the bus, but Times Square was an unfortunate place to pick it up. The line was already starting to wind around the block. He figured it would be best to walk at least to the next stop, if not all the way to the Empire State Building. Kelsier was probably used to walking further in a day than that, depending on how big and spread out Luthadel was. Hopefully the injury wouldnโt stop him. โWe should visit a pawn shop,โ Nico said after a moment, glancing over at Kelsier. โI donโt know how pure the metals would be, but at least we could get you some metals for pretty cheap.โ The last thing Nico wanted to do was poison Kelsier, but he knew the Mistborn needed metals, especially if he was going to heal the injury he had sustained as fast as possible. โAnywayโฆ yeah, you arenโt the first person to have that idea.โ Nicoโs voice was quiet, barely audible above the din of the city. โThe first warโฆ there was a demigod who believed that we could rule better than the gods. He believed that the gods were just using us, and he wanted to overthrow them. Their time was over, he believed, andโฆ and he thought it would be best if he could start a war among the gods so they could take each other down. It wasnโt a bad idea. The gods areโฆ old. They arenโt the best at knowing whatโs best for us, even though they maintain that they are. He ended up working with an old enemy of the gods, but he was manipulatedโฆโ Nico looked away, shuddering at the few memories he had of Luke Castellan. โIt didnโt end well for him. But the gods changed their behavior after that.โ

Even with the injury, which he was pointedly ignoring so far, Kelsier didnโt think heโd have any trouble walking around wherever they wanted to go. He didnโt know how far it was, but he spent his nights leaping between rooftops and getting into fights with people who specialized in killing him. A stroll through a city wasnโt going to tire him โPawn shop?โ He repeated, tasting the word. โFair enough. Iโm guessing no one really has vials of all the basic around here. Probably should try to make sure itโs as pure as possible before I actually swallow any, though. Itโd be a pain to get poisoned right when I finally get to see your world.โ He listened to the story, then opened his mouth, about to congratulate the unnamed demigod for doing what Kelsier assumed he would try to do, were he from Nicoโs world. The words didnโt quite make it out before he saw Nicoโs expression and stopped himself. So they hadnโt been a friend. Or if they had, that wasnโt how theyโd ended up. He shook his head a little. โI canโt say his plan sounds all that bad to me, knowing what I know about the gods. I can admire the planning it must have taken, starting a war. But I know itโs not as simple here as it is in my world. And I know you donโt want the gods to fall.โ Even if he did find it hard to believe. Maybe it was just that he had only met one god, and that was why his wife was dead. Or maybe he just didnโt like authority figures, and you couldnโt go much higher up the food chain. He pushed the thought away, focusing on Nico and offering a smile. โEven if I wouldnโt mind the chance to speak to a few of them myself.โ

It was unfortunate that they couldnโt just buy bottles of metal. It seemed that what was useful in Kelsierโs world wasnโt useful enough in Nicoโs world to warrant selling it on every street corner. Which was a shame, because it was exactly what Kelsier needed to be as powerful as he usually was. Nico knew that Kelsier could survive without metals (he had for most of his life, after all), but in a strange place like this, he likely would need them. Besides, pewter was probably going to help his wound heal faster. He didnโt want to make Kelsier walk around with a wound like that which could reopen at any moment if he moved too suddenly. โWe can try to find Hazel,โ Nico mused, tilting his head a little bit. โShe might be able to tell us if the metals are pure. Sheโs better with metals than I am. I think thatโs because Pluto is more well defined as the god of riches in Roman mythology than Hades is in Greekโฆโ he let that thought hang in the air for a moment before shaking his head. โIf we do that, though, Iโll need your permission to shadow travel to San Francisco. Itโsโฆ really not that far.โ That was a lie, but there was no way for Kelsier to know that. He didnโt have to know that California was on the other side of the country. Even if he found out, he didnโt have to know how large the country was. โMight be our best bet at making sure you donโt get poisoned. I thinkโฆ the Hephaestus kids might also have some metals, but those are a lot more likely to be impure.โ He fell silent for a few moments, thinking about Luke for just a second too long. It was scary, actually, how similar Kelsier was to Luke. They would have gotten along. โIt wasnโt really his planning,โ Nico said after a moment. โHeโฆ he was working with a Titan. The Titan got in his head, and he didnโt realize that he was setting the world up to be taken over by Titans. The godsโฆ the gods are better than that.โ

There really didnโt seem to be any easy access to metals here. Without Allomancers, there wasnโt really any need for vials of metal solutions. It wasnโt like anyone here had any reason to make metals easy to swallow. Still, heโd have felt a lot more secure if he could find a good way to get more. He wasnโt burning pewter, though it would have probably helped his injury heal better. And faster. His body wanted to, as it always did when he was hurt, but he wasnโt letting it. He wasnโt burning through any more of his pewter, not when he didnโt have that much left. It wasnโt as though heโd really had any time to back a bag when heโd decided to come. It had been life or death. He was actually proud heโd had the presence of mind to leave a note. โShadow travel?โ He repeated, glancing at Nico at the words, one eyebrow quirked up. โI donโt like that idea much. And not that far is very relative, you know. You did go halfway around the world once.โ He shook his head. โNo shadow travel. Itโs not worth it. Iโll find metals somehow, or Iโll make it without them.โ He hesitated, turning his thoughts back to Luke. He couldnโt help feeling like he and the boy were similarโฆhe hadnโt know him, but the plan was one he could admire, one he could even have come home with himself. Using the noble houses against each other, letting them weaken each otherโฆthat was exactly what he was doing. โToo bad,โ he replied, shaking his head. โIโd have liked to hear that the gods were beaten in recent history.โ

Nico made a face as his shadow travel idea was shot down. He knew it was dangerous, but he also knew he wasnโt as fragile as others tended to treat him. So what if he got hurt shadow travelling? He would recover, as long as he didnโt do too much again too soonโฆ he gave a small sigh, irritated that nobody elseโs powers seemed to impact them in the same way. Nobody else had to worry about how much they used their powers. Nobody else had something useful that they couldnโt use whenever they needed to. It almost would have been better to have no powers at all. Almost. โOkay, well halfway around the world was far,โ Nico retorted, crossing his arms. โThis isnโt that far. It might be the only way to get you safe metals, and I donโt think having you without them here is a good idea.โ It wasnโt about the shadow travel. It was about Kelsier being here, and Nico being unable to help him. Kelsier had come here to save Nicoโs life. If Nico couldnโt even help him get metalsโฆ frustration burned in the pit of his stomach, but he didnโt say anything else. The slight temperature drop in the surrounding air said enough. โHow much pewter do you have left?โ Nico asked reluctantly. He didnโt know how much time they had to find metals, butโฆ there had to be a way, even if travelling across the country wasnโt an option. He wasnโt really interested in talking about taking down the gods, either. It had been an interesting point of discussion for a while, but he knew that Kelsier would be serious about doing it if he were allowed to ruminate on it for too long. The gods werenโt that bad. The gods kept things in balance, and they were working hard to be better. Simple as that.

Kelsier glanced at Nico, catching the look on his face and the small sigh at the same time. He knew Nico didnโt like being told not to do something, especially when it was something he was trying to do to help. And even more especially when it involved his powers. He couldnโt blame him. He relied on Allomancy all that time, even though he hadnโt had it for hardly any of his life. He knew how much heโd hate it if someone told him not to use it, because it was too dangerous and he needed to b e careful. He knew how much more heโd hate it if it was someone he actually knew, and they were right. He let a moment pass, searching Nicoโs expression as he decided whether to question to shift in tone, or the sudden cold he felt against his skin, in spite of the weather. After a long moment, he decided against it for the moment. But that didnโt mean he wouldnโt if it seemed like there really was something wrong. After all, Nico had just made him promise not to willingly challenge the king of the gods to a brawl. Stopping each other from making stupid decisions seemed to be how they worked. โI have enough,โ he replied instead, offering his best winning smile. โAnd I can make do without it, if need be. Itโs not as though there are any other Allomancers here, andโฆwell, I have handled monsters without metals before, havenโt I? I get the sense theyโd be a lot easier to kill here.โ

Nico breathed out, doing his best not to make a snarky comment about not being able to use his powers. He could, in theory, do it anyway. He could go get metals for Kelsier and make sure they were as pure as possible, and there was nothing Kelsier could do about it. It wasnโt as though he would refuse to use metals that Nico had risked his life for, butโฆ that wasnโt the point. The point was that Nico had no reason to risk his life at the moment. He didnโt need to get metals for Kelsier unless they had exhausted all other possibilities. โWe canโฆ we can try to get some of the Hephaestus kids to test the metals for purity,โ he said after a moment, gritting his teeth. The last thing he wanted was for Kelsier to be poisoned just because this world wasnโt suited to people who needed metals to fuel their powers. โI justโฆ I know you can fight without metals. But itโs a dangerous world, andโฆ and if we get mixed up in the wrong kind of thing, if you end up having to face a god, even if you donโt intend toโฆ then you need to be able to fight back against them. Itโs not so much about monstersโฆ we can get you better weapons to use against them. Itโsโฆ I donโt know. You tend to get yourself mixed up in things that are a lot bigger than you. And youโre still injured.โ Nico cast a pointed look at the spot where the wound was. It wasnโt going to get better quickly unless Kelsier could use his pewter, and Nico could tell he wasnโt actively burning it. โWe need to try to get you metals. Even if itโs just in the city.โ

Kelsier knew he couldnโt stop Nico from going, if he decided to go. He couldnโt make that decision for him, even if Nico had said heโd need his permission. They both knew that wasnโt quite true. It was more that heโd prefer to have Kelsier with him, not left behind in a strange place he didnโt understand. And also that heโd rather not go against him, overall. But it would still happen if Nico thought it needed to, because Nico made things happen, no matter what risk there was to him. โI know,โ he acknowledged, dipping his head. โIโm not blowing off your concern. I probably do need metals at some point, but itโs not urgent. I still have some pewter left, and your friend patched me up pretty well. Iโm not in any danger.โ He hoped that was enough to help ease Nicoโs concern. He really wasnโt that worried about it, even if heโd have felt a lot more comfortable with a few more vials on hand and a solid plan for getting more. He wasnโt all that dependent on them, butโฆhe did need them. He was Mistborn. And more importantly, he was Kelsier. He and trouble had a tendency to find each other no matter what else was happening.

โWillโs pretty good at med stuff,โ Nico allowed after a moment, trying to force himself to relax. Kelsier was fine. Nico may have been used to emergencies, but this wasnโt an emergency. It was odd. Nico had heard of people who were good in a crisis, and he had most certainly heard of people who werenโt good in a crisis. The thing was, most people who were good in a crisis were also good at dealing with day to day life. Emergencies were the kind of thing that you had to be good at normal life to handle well. Some people who could handle normal life perfectly well didnโt handle emergencies well at all. Nico was the opposite, somehow. He could do emergencies. They fit in his mind. They made sense to him. Day to day life? That was where he struggled. โWhatโฆ would you like to do now, then?โ Nico asked after a moment, trying to get back to the cheerful mood they had been in not too long ago. They were supposed to be having fun. Nico was going to do his best to make that happen. โDid you want toโฆ go straight to the Empire State Building? Itโs not too far a walk, if youโd want toโฆโ

Kelsier wasnโt sure whether or not he was good at day to day life. His version of ordinary wasnโt exactly what most people thought of, after all. Even most criminals wouldnโt have known how to cope with life as the Survivor of Hathsinโฆno one else in the world had his normal. He hadnโt even had his normal until the last few years. The difference between his normal and and emergency wasnโt very large, either. But he did know what Nico meant. If things ever went back to the sort of normal he was fighting forโฆwhat would he have left? He wasnโt sure he was really built for anything else, anymore. If he ever had been. โThis is your world. I trust your judgement. Wherever youโd like to go next,โ he replied, offering a small smile as he eased back into the light conversation theyโd had before. There was no need to let the technicalities get in the way of their time hereโฆthough Kelsier knew there were still conversations that needed to be had. This was an incredibly different world. He didnโt even know for sure that he would be able to get away with killing anyone, if something happened. The technology here was a lot more formidable than heโd realized it would be.

Nico found it more comfortable to sink back down into the lighter, more familiar conversation theyโd been having. He was as aware as Kelsier was that there was a conversation to be had, but he wasnโt sure he wanted to have it until after heโd shown Kelsier the city. He wasnโt sure that he alone would be enough to convince Kelsier that killing someone in this world was a very, very bad idea. Nico didnโt think that killing every day citizens was going to be an issue (unless Kelsier found out about Jeff Bezos or Elon Muskโฆ then they might have a problem), but he was worried about Kelsier going after gods. He had earned the right to kill the Lord Ruler, because he understand the world the Lord Ruler operated in. He was able to organize a plan of attack that made sense. Killing Zeus was a whole different beast. โOkay,โ Nico said after a moment, looking around briefly. They could go to the Empire State Building, but Nico wasnโt entirely certain he wanted to take that risk now. Maybe they would justโฆ go somewhere else first. There were plenty of other things to see in the city, after all. โYouโveโฆ never been to Central Park,โ he said after a moment, thinking through his options, โThatโs not too far away. We could explore Times Square a little more and then head in that direction?โ

Kelsier, in his own world, evaded people who had very strong opinions about him all the time. He knew it wasnโt the same, exactly, but all things considered, that probably would make it easier to get away with some law breaking. No one knew how to handle a Mistborn here. He could hide his identity well enough, and it would be very clear that it hadnโt been Nico, so there wasnโt much danger there. The main thing was that he didnโt currently see any reason to end anyone here. Except Zeus, but he had meant it when heโd said he didnโt plan to pick a fight with the god. Not unless he tried anything while the Survivor happened to be here, anyway. Then he was fair game. โSounds good to me. Letโs go,โ he replied cheerfully, glancing around the street thry were currently on. He didnโt have any idea what Central Park wasโฆhad Nico told him that yet? But he did trust Nicoโs judgement. Even if he did suspect his son was rethinking bringing him to the Empire State Building for a reason besides aesthetics.

Kelsier was fairly certain he wasnโt in any real danger. At leastโฆnot from the ordinary human members of this world. He was sure they were decent at their jobs, but they didnโt even have Allomancy. They werenโt demigods, either. Or vampires, or hazekillers, or anything else. He certainly hadnโt clawed his way out of Hathsin to get caught by a few powerless humans. The idea of causing a little mayhem was a tempting one, too, but he had more important things to focus on than pushing his luck as far as it could go. Unless Nico felt like it, at some point while he was here. It wasnโt like he was going to say no. But for now, he let the thought go. There were things to see here. Things to experience for the first time, which Nico there to tell him what it was, or what it meant, as he did. โThereโs even more of it?โ He asked, surprised. โDamnโฆLuthadel isnโt small by any means, but itโs not nearly so packed. Thereโs less to see, even if it takes just as long to get through. Is there anything more here you wanted to show me?โ

โI guess thereโs just a lot to see anywhere,โ Nico replied, fighting his way through the crowd. He tried to do what more of the locals did โ head up, shoulders back, walk straight ahead like youโre going to trample anyone in your path. The issue was, he was smaller than most people were, and they werenโt exactly going to take a scrawny kid seriously no matter how assertive he tried to look when he walked. It was easier for him to duck and dodge his way through. Sometimes, he thought, he would have made a great pickpocket if heโd been born a few decades earlier. Orโฆ if heโd been allowed to live a few decades earlier. Was pickpocketing still a common thing when he had been a kid? โTimes Square is one of the weirdest parts of New York,โ Nico admitted, glancing around and catching sight of some of the weird, off-brand character costumes that surrounded them. โIf you ever need to kill a few hours people watching, Times Square is the way to do it. Sometimes itโs fun to look around and see the tourists seeing it for the first time. Andโฆ like over there, you can seeโฆ that woman thinks she looks like a local, but sheโs not hiding it very well. She keeps trying to see the tops of the buildings.โ

Nico may not have been tall enough to clear a path, but Kelsier most likely was. This being Nicoโs world and not his own, he wasnโt quite as certain about how he was supposed to carry himself as he might have been, butโฆNico was here, too. Nico was in the crowd risking brushing against strangers to show Kelsier where he lived, and a Kelsier wasnโt going to just let him get bumped into. Besidesโฆit wasnโt as though he needed to put that much effort into looking intimidating. He was wearing short sleeves, after all. Hopefully that meant he could clear a bit of a path for Nico, if he wanted to use it. He glanced in the direction of the woman in question. She did seem to be looking upโฆwhich made Kelsier instinctively try and see the tops, too. โLooking up. Smart woman,โ he observed. โShe could be a Mistborn. Do locals not try that?โ

Kelsier did notice the stares he got from a few people, but he didnโt pay them any attention. He could assume it was mostly his scars that drew the attention. Odd ones, certainly, for someone in this world. They were unique to Kelsier in his own world too of course, but there, they did have a cause. Hereโฆhe had no idea what someone might think of them. He just didnโt care enough to try and keep them out of sight, especially if they meant no one bumped into Nico. โFair enough,โ he replied, still eyeing the tops of the buildings. He was half trying to gauge whether he could make it up there with one Pushโฆit probably depended on what the tops were made of. If they were metal, scaling them wouldnโt be difficult at all. If not, he would have had to get creative to pull it off. โSo thatโs why people donโt like tourists. We tend to get in the way,โ he added, smiling a little at the thought. If there was one thing he was definitely good atโฆ
