Nicoโs experience after Tartarus was very different from Kelsierโs after Hathsin. The world had changed a little bit while Nico was in Tartarus, but not by much. The problem he had been trying to fix had only grown worse, and there were consequences to that. It was what Nico had expected. Surprisingly, that had been easy enough to come to terms with and eventually deal with. What was still hard to wrap his head around was the fact that the world wasnโt fundamentally different. In every way that mattered, the world was the same world it had been when Nico had fallen into Tartarus. He was justโฆ different. It felt like the world was a puzzle he had fit into, once, but falling into Tartarus had broken a piece of him off. He no longer fit perfectly into the puzzle. Or maybe it had just made him into a piece from an entirely different puzzle. He didnโt want to think about that now, though. Tartarus wasnโt allowed to even cross his mind while he was here, celebrating the limited time he had with Kelsier. He had no idea when Kelsier had to go back, and he wasnโt going to waste his time with him trying not to be miserable. He wasโฆ just going to enjoy the things he got to do with his dad. โYou could too if you werenโt a coward,โ Nico teased lightly, swinging himself into the next branch so Kelsier couldnโt get revenge for that comment (yet). He grinned down at Kelsier, then looked up to see how much higher he could realistically go. A good deal higher, if he were honest with himself, but he didnโt actually want to leave Kelsier behind.

Kelsier knew it was all too easy to think about Hathsin at the worst of times. He suspected Tartarus was the same way for Nico. He could slip into thinking about it here if he ler himself, butโฆhe didnโt want to. He wanted to keep climbing this tree until he got as high as he could, without help from his metals, anyway. If heโd Pushed off a coin, he could have gone much higher. This was a different sort of climbing though. He found he wanted to see what it was like, all on its own. โHEY!โ He called back, tone indignant, which was completely ruined by the laugher that immediately followed it. He pulled himself higher, then grabbed the next branch, speeding up quite a bit as he started putting his mind to it. โDonโt think being ahead means you can just say that! Better enjoy that distance while it lasts.โ He didnโt even think it was competitiveness that made him start to close the distance between them. It was justโฆthe moment, pulling him higher. And of course, the need to show off in front of Nico, which never really went away. His sense of drama tended to skyrocket in front of his son, and they both knew it.

It was hard for Nico to laugh, now. He hadnโt laughed easily since Bianca had died, but it was as though Tartarus had sucked all of the humor out of him. It had taken Kelsier to make it come back. He was learning how to enjoy life now. He was learning how to live, not just to survive. He hadnโt really known there was a difference before he had gotten out of Tartarus. Before he had met Kelsier. He had been encouraged to stay alive by his friends before, of course. He had found a home with them, too, butโฆ nobody had shared an experience that was anything like Tartarus. That was what made Kelsier so different. He had Hathsin. It wasnโt exatly Tartarus, but it was close enough that they could connect on a level very few others could. Nobody on Scadrial. Nobody that Nico knew in his world or even in the House. Kelsier had recovered. He had been able to help Nico start that journey, too. He climbed higher, doing his best to keep moving quickly. He wasnโt going to let Kelsier catch up to him, even as the branches started to get smaller and more precarious. โYou have to catch me first,โ Nico called back down, his grin audible. He knew Kelsier was showing off. He also had no intention of stopping him.

No one had ever survived Hathsin before. Or at leastโฆno one had ever escaped it. There were plenty of people in the process of surviving it. At least there had been. Hathsin was gone now. Kelsier had destroyed it. Which meantโฆ Well, it meant he wasnโt the only one to make it out alive anymore. Just the first. He shook his head a little, his grin wide as he pulled himself after Nico, stepping as lightly as he could to make sure he didnโt put too much pressure on the branches all at once. He was, at least, very good at climbing things that werenโt necessarily made to be climbed. He didnโt look down, not because he was afraid to, but because he wasnโt currently trying to go there. Plusโฆhe needed to focus if he wanted to stop Nico from getting too far ahead of him. โYou say that like itโs an obstacle!โ he called back, laughter in his voice as he moved higher. The tree was surprisingly good at supporting him. He knew he wouldnโt be able to go quite as high as Nico could, but for now, they were on pretty equal ground.

Nico gave a quiet laugh, pulling himself up even higher. He was fairly fast, but he had less experience than Kelsier. He was also a lot lighter. In the end, it seemed that they were fairly evenly matched. He grinned down at Kelsier, doing his best to ascend faster than Kelsier. He stared up, eyes wide as he realized there were no longer any branches he could reach. He frowned, daring to glance down at Kelsier before wrapping his arms around the trunk and trying to shimmy his way up. It worked for a little bit, but it wasnโt as effective as he had anticipated. Could he shadow travel a little higher? He shot another quick glance at Kelsier, then decided that wasโฆ probably not his brightest idea. He couldnโt shadow travel that frivolously, especially since it might encourage Kelsier to use his metals up to prove a point. They were both annoyingly stubborn. Finally, Nico let himself drop back down to the branch heโd gotten stuck on. It was higher up than heโd anticipated, and he didnโt dare look directly down. He could look out, though. While still not as impressive as the view from any of the skyscrapers, it feltโฆ a little bit more earned, now that they had climbed this high for it.

Kelsier still had a ways to go before he ran out of branches. Of courseโฆNico was also standing on branches that might not really support him quite as well. He wished he had Sazedโs abilities, just for about ten minutes, so he could use a metalmind to make himself lighter. Maybe not the best use of those skills, but if it meant he could go as high as he wanted toโฆ He stopped finally, not far below Nico, but far enough that he wasnโt going to go hurtling downward if he shifted the wrong way. They were fairly high up now, he noted, and smiled as he looked out. The height itself couldnโt impress the Mistborn, but the city was more than unfamiliar enough to make up for it, and he watched, fascinated as the crowd continued to meander back and forth. It had been a long time ago since heโd learned Nico was somewhat afraid of heights. He couldnโt recall if it had been their third or fourth room, butโฆsomewhere around that time, theyโd gotten stuck up very high, and needed to help each other down. He glanced up at Nico. It wasnโt all that high. He didnโt think there was much cause to be worried. โItโs a good view,โ he said quietly, leaning lightly against the trunk.

Nico knew Kelsier was used to heights. Far more used to them than Nico was. They both knew that. But now, with the two of them standing in a tree looking out at the cityโฆ it was easy to forget that. It was easy to pretend that there was nothing to be afraid of, here. It was the two of them together, and hadnโt they proven that there was no enemy they couldnโt beat when they fought as one? If Zeus decided to strike Nico down, Nico had no doubt that Kelsier would attack him without a second thought. The scary thing about Kelsier was that, if anyone could win against a god, it was him. As long as Zeus wasnโt keen on attacking, Nico was safe regardless of how high up he went. He was in Zeusโ domain, but he wasnโt truly risking his wrath. โItโs a view,โ Nico agreed, not entirely certain if he could describe it as good. Like Kelsier, he was used to much higher. He had seen the city from the top of skyscrapers before. It was a completely different experience from this. Would a skyscraper be high enough to provide even Kelsier a knew view? โNo, youโre right,โ he murmured after a moment. โItโs good. Itโsโฆ itโs high up enough that you can see a lot, but not so high that you canโt see individual peopleโs expressions as they go about their day. And they have no idea weโre up here.โ

If Zeus struck, Kelsier would be ready. He knew something about the god by nowโฆhe would probably have used lightning if he wanted to attack Nico. If he used lightning, Kelsier would have time to push Nico out of the way. Or Push him. The sword would probably be enough to shove him out of harmโs way. But he didnโt think it would happen. If anyone was going to get struck down, he planned on making sure it was him. It wasnโt exactly hard - Zeus owed Nico a lot. Kelsier wasnโt shy about being a threat. Out of the two of them, Kelsier was the more likely target. But he wasnโt thinking about it too much. He was watching the people, the tree swaying gently beneath him. It was throwing him very slightly off balance, especially since he couldnโt afford to burn any pewter, but it wasnโt enough to make him want to climb down. โTsk,โ Kelsier replied, turning his smile on Nico again. โNo one ever looks up.โ

โLiterally all tourists spend their time doing is looking up,โ Nico retorted, but there was nothing cold or hard in his tone. Kelsier was right in this case, anyway. Trees were commonplace. The only people who might look up were kids who were interested in climbing the tree. Their parents would likely discourage it, but that probably wouldnโt stop them. The chances were low that of all the trees in Central Park, a child would choose this one to climb. For all intents and purposes, they were invisible. โYou know,โ Nico whispered (well, said loudly enough that the breeze wouldnโt completely carry it away), โI think this might be one of the only up high places in the city where you can see the view without having security cameras or something looking at you in return.โ Security cameras had been a shock to Nico when he had first become aware of how life was in the 21st century. โThey want to make sure that nobody does anything illegal, so they put out little devices that watch everything that goes on in an area. They wouldnโt put those in trees. Itโs nice, knowing that weโre in public, but thereโs absolutely nobody watching.โ Except maybe the gods. Nico elected to leave that bit out. No need to make Kelsier hate them more.

โSecurity cameras,โ Kelsier repeated slowly, more so he could work on pronouncing the English than because he actually needed to say it. It made sense, though he didnโt know what he was looking for, and probably wouldnโt have been able to spot them himself. โHere, too? In the park? Does someone actually get paid to watch people take walks in a park?โ Seemed like a waste of perfectly good money to him. But then, he was used to only getting paid for stealing, and it probably didnโt count as getting paid when it wasnโt mutually agreed on beforehand. โPeople can see the cameras, right? Doesnโt that just mean all the people with nothing to hide are on camera, and the people theyโre trying to catch avoid them?โ

โI donโt actually know if there are cameras in the park,โ Nico admitted, looking around. โYouโd probably be better at that than me. I meanโฆ the cameras are metal, so you might be able to spot them better than I would. But there are enough cameras that if someone is trying to avoid the cameras, they just look more suspicious. So itโs harder for people to commit crimes, because they look suspicious if they try too hard to avoid being seen on the cameras, but if they are seen on the cameras, then their crime is visible to whoever has access to the footage.โ He shrugged, then looked around before looking back up at Kelsier. โThisโฆ isnโt supposed to encourage you to commit a crime here, but a good way to avoid being seen by the cameras is to find a way to disable them. Itโs suspicious and will make whoever is watching aware that something is going wrong, but theyโll probably think itโs technical difficulties instead of immediately assuming someone is trying to commit a crime.โ

โUnless you could avoid all of them,โ Kelsier pointed out, raising an eyebrow at Nico before he looked out over the park again. โThen no one would know you were there on the first place. Youโd need an alibi, but some willing participants would take care of that.โ He couldnโt help it. Being told he couldnโt go somewhere was always going to be the fastest way of getting him there. Of course, disabling the cameras was another good idea. โI think I could do that with Allomancy,โ he mused, eyeing the nearest building as though he could see the camera already. โA sudden Push could break it, maybe. Ike have to take a look at one, but testing it wouldnโt be too hard, especially if I didnโt do anything more than that at first.โ

โIf you wanted to avoid all of them,โ Nico replied, rolling his eyes, โYouโd need to know exactly where all of them were beforehand, and youโd need to know what all they could see. It would be extraordinarily difficult, and you would need someone on the inside to help. People have done it before, of course, but it requires a lot of planning. We have no idea how long youโre going to be here, and Iโd rather spend our time showing you around than helping you plot a heist on a building you hadnโt even heard of before now.โ He crossed his arms, raising a brow at Kelsier before his attention back towards the view laid out in front of them. It really was beautifulโฆ he took in a breath, then shifted so he could see Kelsier just a little bit better. โIf you want to try disabling the cameras, I wonโt stop you. But stealing here isnโt going to be as useful as stealing is on Scadrial. Itโs not like we have atium, and our currency would be useless on Scadrial.โ

โIf you were normal,โ Kelsier corrected, giving Nico a bright, pleasant smile. โYouโd need to know all that. And make plans, and so forth. I could do that. Plans are my specialty, and with my crew, weโd be unstoppable. But like so many people, youโre not taking into account the power of being Mistborn.โ He took out a coin, tossing it up and catching it easily. โI could go to the roof. Iโm guessing no one would have bothered to put cameras in places it shouldnโt be possible to reach. Once inside, Iโd just have to stay where there are plenty of people to hide me, and take a look around. Then I could come back at night, take out the cameras with a little iron, and and Soothe whoeverโs keeping an eye on them until I can knock them out.โ He inclined his head, still smiling. โBut itโs purely hypothetical. Donโt worry, Iโve much better things to do than petty theft. For now.โ

Kelsier laughed. He didnโt actually know how the cameras worked, reallyโฆhe didnโt know how he would avoid them. It was a bad idea to go into a situation blind, but he was used to that by now. Maybe it would be stupid to try and steal when you didnโt understand the security, but he had to admit, the idea was also tempting. It was probably a good thing he was here for Nico. If heโd just been exploring on his ownโฆ Well, it might have been a little bit louder. โThereโs always another secret,โ he said lightly. โThe key is to make sure you always have a way to deal with the things youโre missing. I could miss a camera. But if Iโm knocking out the person watching them, Iโll be able to see them all from there, wonโt I? I bet thereโs a way to control them from there. I could always just break them all, as long as I didnโt mind people knowing there was a break in. If I wanted to be more subtle, Iโd need to find an expert and get them on my crew.โ He grinned, leaning out just a little, holding onto the branch to stop himself from falling. โItโs a good thing no one here has anything I want. Youโve never seen me pull off a real heist, have you?โ

Nico knew what he was signing up for when he agreed to this relationship with Kelsier. When he had decided that this was the man he wanted to see as a father figure. Okay, so it hadnโt been a decision so much as it had been Kelsier acting more like a father than Hades ever had, and Nicoโs heart going along with it. Kelsier was everything Nico had needed at that point in his life. He was everything Nico still needed, if he were honest with himself. Thisโฆ being able to exist in the same space as Kelsier on their own timeโฆ it felt an awful lot like a gift. โYouโre really giving this a lot of thought,โ Nico commented calmly. He knew that Kelsier could easily pull off a heist while he was here. It wouldnโt be that hard to find people who knew what they were doing and who were more than happy to pull it off with him. Kelsier was charismatic enough that he might even be able to convince an upstanding citizen to join in. Hopefully, the language barrier would be enough of an obstacle that it wouldnโt be an issue. โMaybe one day Iโll get to see you in your world and Iโll join you on a heist,โ he added after a moment, a small smile touching his lips. He thought he might like that, the ability to participate in Kelsierโs world in a way Kel was familiar with. Especially since Nicoโs world wasnโt exactly designed to show off Kelsierโs talents.

Kelsier was giving this a lot of thought, he had to admit. He didnโt know that he had any intention of actually doing itโฆthe point was that he could, if he decided to. And it was always a good idea to know what you were up against, even if you werenโt in a fight. Fights happened without warning, and the information couldnโt hurt. He glanced at Nico, his smile fading a tiny bit before he could stop it. Nico on Scadrialโฆthat was a concept. It wasnโt this world. It wasnโt any world, not that he knew of. The air here was clearer, he could tell, the plants and people both less rough and bitter, because they hadnโt had to fight to survive the same way. He was sure some of them had. Nico had. But even soโฆ โThey wouldnโt know what hit them,โ he replied, shaking his head a little and turning his smile on Nico. โBut if you really want to see a heist, all you have to do is say the word. Iโm certain I could handle anything this world has to throw at me.โ He looked back out. It was quiet up here, he realized suddenly, quieter than it was down there. As though they were above the shouts, somehow. โI think trees are my second favorite plant,โ he said after a moment, voice soft. โBehind flowers.โ

โYouโre going to lose your shit when you learn that plenty of trees grow flowers in the spring.โ It was odd to think that Kelsier likely wouldnโt know that. How would he know which plants grew flowers and which didnโt? There was no way for him to find out. โI meanโฆ theyโre not like Mareโs flower, but theyโre pretty anyway. Sometimes, when the wind is right, you can see it blowing down petals. Itโs like itโs raining, but itโs flowers.โ Nico wished he could make Kelsier stay here through the spring, butโฆ there was no chance this visit was going to last that long. The only way Kelsier was going to be able to see those flowers would be if Nico could get pictures that were high quality enough to send. The pictures he had sent in the past were enough to get across the idea of flowers, but not enough to really capture them. โIโve heard that the flowers in DC are even prettier than the ones here in the spring. There are more of them, there. The way they built the city means thereโs more room for plants and flowers and things. Itโs sort of built into the infrastructure. I guessโฆ I havenโt spent very much time in DC.โ Nico glanced back down at the ground, considering. โWe could go see some more plants while youโre here, if you want. You might not be able to choose a favorite after that. Especially if you see California redwoodsโฆ theyโre huge. Theyโre also really far away, but Iโm sure we could manage it.โ

Kelsierโs eyes widened as he looked at Nico, wonder flickering through his expression as he pictured itโฆor he tried to. He had touched flowers, now, real ones. Here he stood, in a world where they had to be stepped on sometimes, because of how many there were. A world where the idea that even one could bring someone to tears was probably absurd. But the thought of petals raining downโฆhe closed his eyes, trying to imagine it. Being surrounded by them, swirling like the mist. The image in his head probably wasnโt accurate, but it made him smile anyway. โI keep thinking itโs impossible for there to be more wonders here,โ he murmured, opening his eyes again to meet Nicoโs, his expression soft. โDo theโฆโ He hesitated, mouthing the word a couple times to get the feel of it before he actually tried pronouncing it. โCalโฆcaliโฆforninia redwoodsโฆdo they grow flowers, too? They wouldnโt now, I know. Itโs not spring.โ He couldnโt help feeling proud of himself for knowing that much about flowers. It had seemed like something Nico thought went without saying, because here it probably did. But he hadnโt even thought to connect flowers with other plants before heโd blinked in, so the idea of seasons affecting them had been a vague, uncertain one.

Nico gave a small smile at Kelsierโs question. He knew more about flowers than Kelsier did, but he hadnโt known very much before Kelsier had started to blink in. He had spent time learning everything he could about them since. He wanted to be able to answer any questions the Mistborn had, becauseโฆ because flowers meant something to him. They didnโt mean anything to Nico other than just being vaguely pretty plants that existed sometimes. They were more than that, now. The knowledge that other world didnโt have themโฆ it made Nico want to protect them. It made him want to ensure that his world never lost them. How many people took them for granted? How many people never realized how lucky they were to live in a world where things bloomed? Where the air was perfumed with something natural and sweet, where flowers grew where it wasnโt realistic. โI donโt think they do,โ Nico said after a moment, shaking his head. โTheyโre not the kind of trees that produce flowers. I donโt know all of the trees that do, but I thinkโฆ itโs mostly trees that produce fruit later on. Lots of trees produce fruit in the summer or berries in the fall, and those usually have flowers in the spring. I donโtโฆ really know what the correlation is.โ Nico was silent for a long moment, trying to think exactly what to say to Kelsier. โSomeโฆ some plants have flowers that bloom in winter. I thinkโฆ I donโt know. That sounds like something youโd like. Somethingโฆ Mare would have liked.โ

Kelsier knew on some level that people would get used to flowers, eventually, but the idea of it actually happeningโฆit still felt hard for him to picture. You could get used to anything, if you had enough of it, he knew. Why else would the Skaa refuse to fight back? But he still couldnโt quite imagine it happening to him. If he lived here, would he step on them without a thought, eventually? Would he stop feeling the need to touch these leaves? โThatโs good to know,โ he noted, glancing at Nico. โMaybe they have something to do with the fruit. I donโt know. I guess Iโll find out.โ A small smile lit his expression as Nico continued, and he touched a leaf, feeling the way it quivered in the breeze. He was right, of course. The idea of flowers that grow not only where it was easy to, but in the cold, harsh clutches of winter, tooโฆhe wanted to see it. He wanted to congratulate it, one survivor to another, for flourishing where it shouldnโt have. Or maybe he just wanted to see the differences in it, the way the colors looked on a plant that struggled, in contrast to one that didnโt. The way something grew when nothing seemed to want to allow it to. โWhich ones bloom in the winter? Iโd like to see them,โ he said finally, his voice soft. โMare would have loved all of this, you know. Sheโd have loved this world.โ She would have loved Nico, too, but they both already knew that.

โDo you have libraries in Scadrial?โ Nico asked, frowning a little as he tried to picture a library among everything else Kelsier had told him about. It was hard enough to imagine books in general being available to the Skaa, let alone an entire library. It was entirely possible that Nicoโs current level of illiteracy in Scadrial was the same as many of the Skaa. He likely wouldnโt stand out for not knowing how to read. Whichโฆ he realized would be a problem on Kelsierโs end here if he decided to take him to a library, but they could get around it. โBasically,โ he continued, trying to keep his thoughts as grounded in one place as possible. He was used to them flying off in all different directions, but he didnโt want to forget his point. โThey have a lot of information available to everyone for free, and all you have to do is go and either look it up online or find what you want to know in a book there. Thereโs bound to be some books on flowers, and even if you canโt read them, we can learn together. If you want, I mean. Iโฆโ he blushed, frowning a little as he realized he didnโt actually know exactly what Kelsier wanted to do. Was a library too boring? How much did he really care to learn about flowers? Nico wished he knew exactly how to direct this visit so Kelsier could get as much out of it as possible. โIโฆ honestly donโt know which flowers bloom in winter, only that Iโve seen a couple. But I bet we could find that out at the library, too.โ He fell silent for just a moment as Kelsier continued. He would have loved to show Mare around, though he wasnโt sure she would like him nearly as much as she would like the world. He wasnโt a flower. He was just a hardened kid who cared too much and had done too much harm in the past. There were reasons he and Kelsier got along, but he couldnโt help but feel that some of those reasons were also reasons why Mare wouldnโt like him. He tried not to dwell on that too much. It didnโt matter what Mare thought of him. Not technically, at least.

โLibraries? The nobility do,โ Kelsier replied. โA lot of the skaa canโt read, at least not well. I can, becauseโฆwell, you know why I can. But itโs not a skill I use that often, especially with Sazed around to do it for me.โ The idea of a library that was just generally accessible to anyoneโฆthe concept excited him. Not necessarily because he would have gotten that much out of it, himself, but for another, semi-adjacent reason. โItโs entirely too bad I didnโt drag poor Saze here with me,โ he told him, shaking his head a tiny bit at the thought. โLibraries accessible to all? Information available at a whim? Religions, cultures, lives shared with anyone who cares to learn about themโฆany Keeper would give their right hand to exist here for even a day, and Sazed isnโt just any Keeper. Weโd never drag him away from your library once he found his way inside it.โ He gave a small, light chuckle, and it left behind a quiet smile as it faded. โIโd like to visit the library, when we get a chance. Even if Iโm sure Iโll get some odd looks, letting you tell me what the books have to say.โ The thought of Mare here, Mare in this bright, impossible worldโฆhe felt it ache inside of him. She would have loved it even more than he did, he was sure. This had been her dream first, hadnโt it? It was her dream, still. He was only trying to make it a reality. โI wish you could have known her,โ he said finally. His voice was softer than it ever was, and quiet, enough to make him wonder if Nico would hear it at all. โI wish she could have known you.โ

โSometimes I think I hate your world more the more I hear about it,โ Nico admitted, shaking his head just a little. He may not have been the biggest fan of books, given how difficult it was to get into them because of his cocktail of neurodivergency, but he appreciated libraries for what they were. โI meanโฆ here, theyโre more than just repositories of knowledge. Theyโre that, too, of course, butโฆ libraries here are also places people can go if they donโt have anywhere else. They donโt provide food or a place to sleep, but they have tools that help people who are unemployed find jobs. They have activities that are built to help out schoolchildren whose parents need to be working when their kids need to be picked up. Theyโre great for people who canโt afford books on their own, because the books are all free to borrow. Iโm sure there are dozens of other reasons why libraries are great for people who might otherwise be disenfranchised. I donโt spend a lot of time in libraries. The point Iโm trying to get to isโฆ I donโt think our libraries are very much like noble libraries at all.โ Nico tried to give a smile, but he wasnโt sure if that information would be comforting or frustrating to Kelsier. It had to be frustrating to know that there were worlds where things were better. It had to be infuriating to know that your people were suffering while there were people elsewhere who didnโt have to deal with any of that pain. It had to be inspiring, too. It had to be (at least in some ways) a beacon of hope that things might actually be able to change. โWeโll visit,โ Nico whispered, and it was a promise. โYouโll see what libraries are like, and we can learn as much as you want about anything youโre interested in. Maybeโฆ maybe we can see if there are flowers here that look like Mareโs.โ Nico glanced away, jaw working as he thought of the woman Kelsier had loved. โI donโt think sheโd like me very much,โ he admitted, breathing out. โI thinkโฆ Iโm kind of the opposite of everything she would have liked, if everything youโve said about her is true.โ

It was a good thing, hearing about the libraries, the world, so different from Scadrial. It was good because it was proof that Kelsier was right, that the Lord Ruler was wrong, that the world was supposed to be different than it was. That there was something to aim for, and flowers werenโt a legend, a dream that could never be a reality. There was somewhere they were going. And Kelsier was going to make sure they got there. He wanted to see the library, here. He wanted to look up flowers, and he wanted to find the closest one to Mareโs he could. And then he wanted to draw it, over and over again, until he could do it from memory. It wouldnโt be hers. But it would be proof that hers could exist. He glanced at Nico, startled at the words. He didnโt answer for a moment, though not because he didnโt have an answer. He just hadnโt expected to need one. โYou donโtโฆNico, do you really think she wouldnโt have loved you?โ He asked, and his voice was genuine, his gaze steady as he watched him. โDo you think, just because youโre the son of Hades, and your abilities are tied to his, she wouldnโt have been able to see who you are? She believed in hope, Nico, more than I ever can, but more than that, she believed in beauty and truth. She loved the idea of flowers, but they werenโt all she stood for. If you couldnโt have bonded over plants as they should have been, then you only have to look up to see what would have brought you together.โ He looked up, and closed his eyes, imagining the constellations that could be seen if there wasnโt ash and mist and light in the way of them. โDid you know she told me about the stars, long before I could see them for myself? Weโd stand on the roof, as high as we could go, and weโd look up, and Iโd point, anywhere in the sky, and sheโd tell me which constellation I was pointing at. She probably lied a few times, when I pointed at nothing, but it didnโt matter, because the stories were always true. Every single one of them.โ He breathed out, and slowly, he opened his eyes again to look back at Nico, quiet smile at his lips for a long moment before he spoke. โShe would have loved you.โ

Nico looked up at Kelsier, uncertainty blossoming in his gaze. He had never really been able to think of himself as deserving of love. He had believed he was, once. A very long time ago. Before he had ever needed to question his place in the world. It had been years since that. He had earned Kelsierโs love because the Mistborn was just as complicated as he was himself. โItโs not because of Hades,โ Nico murmured, trying to sound like it didnโt really matter. It did. โI meanโฆ it is, partially. But not entirely. Itโs only partly that I would kill every flower she loved. Itโsโฆ I donโt know. You know who I am, and you know what I can be. If the situation calls for it. You know what Iโve done, all the mistakes I madeโฆ I donโtโฆ I donโt want to imply that she isnโt open minded or anything, because I know she wasnโt butโฆโ he hesitated, blushing as he realized heโd been gesturing wildly the more worked up he had gotten. โI just think maybe I donโt deserve for her to see me as the kind of person whoโs worth loving.โ Nicoโs voice was quieter at that. He hadnโt been sure he would even say it out loud, but there it was, out in the open. Mare wasโฆ Nico hadnโt known her. He couldnโt say for sure who she had been. He couldnโt say fo sure whether she would have cared for him or not. In his mind, though, she was the embodiment of everything Kelsier strived so hard to bring to his world. She was kindness and light, grace and joy. She had been a person too, of course, but in Nicoโs eyes, she was the flame that drove Kelsierโs involvement in freeing the Skaa. She was everything the Lord Ruler tried to snuff out. It didnโt matter that she had been a thief. Wasnโt that the point of the Robin Hood story in his own world? That there were thieves with more moral background than the rich. He pushed the thought away, instead paying attention to what Kelsier was actually saying. โI didnโt know she showed you the stars,โ he breathed, looking up as though he could see them through the sun stained afternoon sky. โI would love to hear the stories,โ he added, breath catching in his chest. โI wish I could have told her the stories of the stars here.โ He let out a soft sigh, shifting so he could see Kelsier a little better.

Kelsier fell silent, listening as Nico tried to articulate his thoughts. Easier said than done. A phantom smile haunted the Mistbornโs face for a moment at the sight of Nicoโs gestures, a language all on its own, and not one the House had ever bothered to translate. Or perhaps it hadnโt been able to. What had the kid told him, so long ago? That he thought the things you did without meaning to said more about you than the things you did on purpose? He didnโt remember the exact phrasing, but stillโฆKelsier thought he might understand what he had meant by it. The gestures were so deeply Nico, and theyโd almost certainly been unconscious. He shook his head a little. He was still trying to convince himself that he wouldnโt blink back this time. That this wasnโt merely a room, that this wasnโt time he had to steal away in the dead of night. This belonged to him. He could take it as freely as he wished. It was exhilarating. He gave a soft, nearly inaudible sigh, and pulled his mind back to the moment, and the conversation. He weighed his answer on his tongue, trying to decide whether to let it free or leave it unspoken, before he finally looked back at Nico. โYou and me both,โ he answered, and his voice was gentle. โI donโt know if I ever told you this, butโฆIโd never killed, before I lost her. Before she was killed. I was a thief, so I certainly never had the moral high ground as far as most people were concerned, but so was she. But, nowโฆโ His smile slipped sideways. Or maybe it slid away entirely, and there was another, different sort of smile waiting underneath it. It was hard to tell what exactly was different about it, but if two things could be both the same and opposite, then that was what it was. โSheโll never meet the Survivor of Hathsin. Iโll never know what sheโd think if she did. But, you should knowโฆthereโs no doubt in my mind that she would love you. And I like to think I knew her well enough to be right about something like that.โ He shook his head again, one hand resting against the trunk, steadying himself without the familiar burn of pewter. โAll that aside, thoughโฆIโd like to hear about your stars. Maybe we can trade tales, sometime.โ

Nico didnโt even seem to realize he was gesticulating. He had grown up doing it, and though he had tried to tone it down around Minos in an attempt to make himself smaller and less noticeable, the gestures still came back when he was with people he trusted or when he spoke about things he was excited about. He trusted Kelsier implicitly. It wasnโt a decision to allow himself to gesture around the Mistborn, but he had quickly become comfortable with it. He trusted that Kelsier didnโt want him to take up less space. In fact, he had a feeling that Kelsier probably wanted him to feel comfortable taking up more space. He was still getting used to the idea that there were people who wanted him around. That there were people who enjoyed his company not just because he was useful, but because he was someone they actually liked being around. โOh,โ Nico whispered, dark eyes meeting hazel as he turned to look at Kelsier. He had known that, from a conversation the two of them had shared what felt like eons ago, but he hadnโt actually thought about what it meant. If Mare had never seen Kelsier kill, had she even known that he was capable of it? She had a dream about what the world could be. She had found beauty in flowers and small things like that. She had ideals about how the Skaa should be treated that Kelsier was fighting for. Would she have approved of Kelsierโs methods? It was a thought that made Nico distinctly uncomfortable. He had often wondered a similar thing about Bianca, but he had always known the answer. She would have hated the way he went about things. She never would have let him risk his life in all the ways he had. She wouldnโt be proud of him, no matter how much he wanted her to be. โWhen I get to your world,โ Nico whispered, his voice as firm as though he could speak it into existence, โYou might have your answer. If you want. I bet I can raise your spirits as well as I can raise the ones here.โ He was silent for a long moment before he moved towards Kelsier, finding an odd comfort in proximity. โButโฆ I believe you. Iโd be a fool to think youโre not the expert.โ Nico glanced at Kelsier, trying to force a smile. He wasnโt as good at them as Kelsier was (yet), but he was learning. It wasnโt convincing, but it was a smile. โIโd like that. Trading stories,โ he added, voice genuine. โI can find us somewhere to see the stars tonight.โ

Kelsier hesitated as Nicoโs words sunk in, along with the possibility behind them somehowโฆheโd never really considered before. Heโd always said that heโd see her again eventually, and sometimes, he even thought he believed it, but this? Having the option in front of him in a way that was nearly practical, an impossibility broken up into manageable pieces? It was what he did, each time he pulled off a heist. So what if you could never do the impossible? You could stop believing that the impossible existed in the first place, and that was at least nearly the same thing at the end of the day. But he couldnโt quite let this become a possibility. Not yet. โSince when is that a โwhenโ?โ He asked lightly, lips quirking into a smile. โMy world wouldnโt be nearly as good of a vacation as yours, Iโm afraid. But I appreciate the thought.โ He leaned out, letting the branch he was holding take his full weight so he could sway gently above the ground and ignoring the way his newly closed wound protested the movement. โAl any rate, Iโll have to think of some good ones before night, then. Which brings up the point that I donโt even know how long earth days are, do I?โ
