Gila stayed in the bush where Shadowfur had directed her. She wasn't sure why he had even listened to the tom, but seeing the size of that patrol, she was glad she did. Two or three cats weren't very many, but when angered and ready to attack, well... Gila wouldn't have really stood a chance.
The gray she-cat licked her paw and drug it over her face, wincing as she cleaned her wound. It wasn't very deep, but she figured it would leave some scars. Not that it was very important to Gila, anyway. It would make for a great story. "Loner attacks clan cat and sends him running." Yeah, something like that. Gila dropped her paw and watched the cats arguing. It was taking every ounce of her to stay quiet and in the bush.
When Shadowfur motioned her out, Gila crept out of the bush, shaking out her pelt as she rose. She flicked her torn her and watched Shadowfur. "Yes. I understand, but I still don't want to leave." She insisted, narrowing her yellowish eyes. This tom could do nothing to make her even consider leaving her home.

Shadowfur's tail tip twitched in annoyance. What a hare-brain.
"Fine," he growled. "But don't expect me to feel sorry for you if you wind up dead somewhere. It'll be your own fault, and nobody else's, since you were too much of a hare-brain to understand why you can't live here any more." He stood up and started padding away. Stupid she-cat. She'll be dead tomorrow, I bet. Some patrol will find her and tear her to shreds. And, well, she'll deserve it.

So far Antpaw was getting the scents of sand, DarkClan cats, and lizard, but he knew the lizard scent was only because of Adderstrike's recent kill. Besides, Antpaw wasn't interested in a dumb lizard. He had to admit that they were tasty, but he knew he could kill something bigger and better. Pretty much anything was better than a lizard; his goal in the end was taking down a roadrunner, and while he had never killed one so far in his apprenticeship, he was bound and determined to do as such.
The ruddy tom paused to scent the air once more. His tail-tip twitched in thought as he still received nothing important. A low growl began to form in his throat. Why wasn't anything he could kill out here? Adderstrike had killed a lizard, but that act shouldn't have scared off every other living thing out in this particular area. A lizard couldn't even scream out in pain as it was killed. There was no way that killing a lizard could frighten everything else. With nothing around that he could catch, Antpaw was growing angry. All he wanted was to sink his claws into something, something he could then eat.
In his frustration, Antpaw stormed toward a rocky outcropping. He was no longer being conscious of where he was placing his paws. Doing this allowed him a surprise - a surprise that wasn't a very good one at that.
A yelp of startled pain slipped from the apprentice's maw. Fur bristling he jumped back a few paw-steps, copper eyes wide as he looked down at the small form of a scorpion with its stinger standing straight up. Antpaw flattened his ears against his head. While it was just an Arizona bark scorpion, the sting was terribly painful, but it had been coming due to Antpaw's anger and ignorance to his surroundings.

Gila snorted at the tom. "I didn't ask for your sympathy." She huffed, narrowing her eyes. "And I've lived out here for moons perfectly fine, so I don't think another day is going to make a difference" If it did, then there was nothing Gila could do about that. If she died, then she died, and if she was taken prisoner, then, she guessed she'd just be taken prisoner. Gila didn't want to join their clan, but if she had to choose to live in the clan or die, she would choose the clan.
~~
Adderstrike quietly followed behind Antpaw, making sure to stick a good enough distance behind him. As much as Adderstrike thought he hated Antpaw, the ruddy tom was still an apprentice and needed to be watched out and taught. The tabby wasn't going to get in the way of Antpaw's hunting or steal his prey; he was just going to watch and make sure he was doing everything correctly.
Everything was going okay until Adderstrike heard a yelp. The tom jerked his head up, ears perked. He bounded over in the apprentice's direction, stopping a couple fox-lengths behind him. When he saw that there was no wild animal around, a confused look spread across his face. "What happened?" He huffed, lashing his tail in slight annoyance. Couldn't the apprentice stay out of trouble for just one night?

Shadowfur continued walking, ignoring her. He had bothered to try and help her, and he had learned his lesson for it. No matter what his father had said, killing intruders was certainly easier than trying to negotiate with them. He should have just tore her throat and left her, just like he'd done with all the ones before. She had no place living in DarkClan's territory. If she didn't understand that, then that was her problem. He'd gladly point her out the next time he was on a patrol and saw her.
He turned his mind back to hunting, halting as he tasted the air for signs of prey. He focused his nose on possible prey, but kept his ears open in case the she-cat tried to jump him. Rogues were much more unpredictable than Clan cats.

Gila watched as Shadowfur turned and walked away. She couldn't help but unsheathe her claws, doing her best to grip the sand below her. Why was he so arrogant? Why was his entire clan so arrogant? Gila just couldn't wrap her head around it. Why couldn't she live on their territory in harmony?
The gray she-cat snorted and padded forward. "Shadowfur.. wait." She said, stopping a few fox-lengths away from him. "Can you at least tell me why I'm not allowed to live here?" Gila didn't know why she walking him; she didn't even care. She just didn't want him to leave. Though she would never admit that, it was true. It was nice to have company for a change, even if the company could be a lot better.

(from gila)
Shadowfur turned, narrowing his eyes as Gila approached him with the question. "Simply put, it makes us look weak to the other Clans. If we let rogues just wander through our territory whenever they please, then it looks like we can't defend our borders. It looks like we're just a bunch of weak, submissive fools. And if that happens, the other Clans will invade us and try to take our territory. We have no where to go if that happens. We need to be here because one Clan can't exist alone. Our traditions, everything we stand for, would disappear without the other Clans."

Gila blinked at his response. It made sense, but she still didn't understand. She wasn't a rogue. She wasn't even violent unless provoked and pushed to that point. SO why did she have to leave? "But I'm not doing anything to your territory. There's only one of me." The desert was a big place, so why couldn't they spare room for one outside cat?

(I know)
Shadowfur shook his head. "They don't know that. It doesn't have to be a group. If they see just one cat, then it makes us look weak. It makes us look like we can't maintain our borders. We have a reputation for being the most hostile Clan in the desert, and that reputation is fragile. It could easily be shattered if something goes wrong. It's happened before. Not in my lifetime, but my father was an apprentice when it last happened. The DarkClan leader got too lenient, and we got invaded as a result. We almost lost the whole Clan. Littlestar doesn't want that to happen again."

"Yeah. I can tell you're all hostile." Gila said, flicking an ear. Life was easier when you expressed yourself in different ways- to Gila that is. She wasn't the most predictable cat in the world that's for sure. The flat-faced she-cat blinked. "There's only one of me, and I'm not planning on invading your clan. I could care less about the clan life." Why did the clan fight other's, anyway? It was just a waste of time and energy in her opinion.

(and dramatic forbidden relationships
Shadowfur heaved his billionth sigh of the night. "You aren't going to give up, huh?" He shook his head. Rogues were hopeless. They only ever cared about themselves. Never about the lives that they were invading, or the trouble they could cause. As long as they themselves were safe, that's all they cared about. In a way, then, he supposed, perhaps she was a bit like him.
Which made him curious.
He sat down again. "So seeing as you aren't planning on leaving... Would you like to talk a bit?" He knew how much trouble he'd be in for doing what he was doing. After all, it went against the warrior code. If Littlestar found out... He'd be in the grave.

Gila shook her head at his question. It had taken him that long to figure that out? The she-cat would have thought by the tenth time of her saying something about not leaving that Shadowfur would have realized that she was serious. She couldn't blame him, though. He was a tom after all.
Watching him sit down sent a confused look over the loner's face. She had thought that he was leaving, going back home or going to do whatever his kind did. "I guess so.." Gila responded a bit hesitantly, her voice slightly confused. She shook her head and brushed the confusion off. There was no time for that. Gila strutted over to the tom and sat near him, careful not to get too close to him. "What did you want to talk about? She asked, her head tipped just a bit.

His paw hurt like nothing else. Never before had he been stung by anything, let alone a scorpion, but he knew from the pain that he had just been stung. Antpaw had heard a few stories of what would happen from a scorpion's attack, but he wasn't so sure if anything he had heard would be true. The tom knew he wasn't going to die - he couldn't die. He was a DarkClan cat. DarkClan cats were strong, strong enough to even survive the venom of a scorpion.
Annoyance bubbled up inside the ruddy feline when he heard Adderstrike's voice behind him. Of course the warrior would be around to see this. Great, he thought bitterly, Adderstrike is going to humiliate me now. He turned his eyes on the tabby with a harsh light dancing in their depths. "Scorpion," he growled, gesturing with his tail toward the creature that was scurrying away from the felines. If that dang scorpion wasn't running away Antpaw would mutilate that thing.

When Adderstrike walked up the tom, he flicked the tip of his tail. He knew something had just happened, and he hoped it wasn't too serious. Hearing it was a scorpion made Adderstrike bristle slightly. "Did you happen to catch what kind it was?" The tom asked. He slightly hoped it was just an Arizona bark. The clan didn't need to lose any cats. If it was just an Arizona bark, Adderstrike could easily help Antpaw, but if it wasn't, well... that would have been bad.

The pain was causing Antpaw to be all the more snappy toward the warrior. He hissed, hobbling around to stare directly at the other tomcat. "Arizona bark," he replied hotly as if Adderstrike should have known that already. If Adderstrike had been around this whole time why hadn't he have seen the scorpion? Or was this some sort of test to see if Antpaw knew how to distinguish the wildlife of the territory? If so that was a stupid test - Antpaw already knew what was what, he had known since he was a kit. Who did Adderstrike think he was? Did the warrior think he was some stupid kit? Antpaw for sure wasn't, and he was going to prove that to the warrior in some way or another.

Adderstrike lashed his tail as Antpaw snapped him, but chose to contain himself. He knew the tom was in pain and he wasn't going to fight him again. "Do you know if the stinger is still in your paw?" He asked, giving a small sigh of relief when Antpaw said it was just an Arizona bark. The apprentice would be fine in a few days. Adderstrike could already tell that Antpaw was going to get even angrier within the next few days of being cooped up in camp with an injured paw, but it had to be done. Luckily Adderstrike knew about herbs and injuries so he could help the apprentice. He didn't know much and certainly prided himself in being better at hunting and fighting, but he knew enough to get by.

"Well, for starters, tell me about yourself. I'm sure the life of a rogue is a lot different than the life of a Clan cat." He focused on her intently, eager for her answer. Because of his Clan's strict ways, he never was able to speak to an outsider until that moment. He was curious as to what life was like outside of the restrictions of the Clans. He knew he shouldn't be, but he was. And who better than to ask than her?

Gila blinked at his response. So that was what he wanted to know? Out of all of the things they could have begun talking about, he wanted to know about her? Gila hadn't expected that, but it made sense. "Well..there's not much to tell. I've lived here for my entire life, and I just suck to myself. I'm normal. I eat and sleep like any other cat, just alone." Gila wasn't really sure how to answer his question. The life of a rogue was pretty much self explanatory. She was like any other cat, just by herself. Just like she had told Shadowfur.

He blinked. "So then why not join a Clan? Doing that would fix all of that. You'd have friends, a place to sleep at night, an education... I mean, unless you like living alone, of course." Having spent his entire life living in a Clan, he couldn't wrap his mind around the idea of living alone, all day every day. It sounded awful to him. As violent and cold as DarkClan could be, he was still grateful for the company. If he were left alone as Gila was, he'd surely go insane. He felt cold just thinking about it.

[ Mine have been too omg I'm sorry about that ]

Gila watched Shadowfur as he spoke. Join a clan? That would be a mistake in every way. She saw how those cats acted on patrol when she wasn't even in plain sight, so how would they act with her living amongst them? "Your clan wouldn't want me." She said, "I saw how they acted just at the mention of me. It's not like I'd ever have friends there, anyway. I'm just a good living alone- if not better off." She gave a small snort at her words. Living in a clan would bring disrespect to her entire life, and she was sure that they would feel the same way by having a loner in their midst. Gila appreciated the offer, but she just didn't know if she could take it up. Clan life didn't seem all that great to her. Rules...rules..more rules. How fun.

Salt Just jump in somewhere) Rushingwolf No yours are longer than mine xD) "They treat each other better than that... for the most part. If you were to join, some cats would of course treat you differently, but they certainly wouldn't kill you if you were a Clanmate. Unless, of course, you did something horrible, but then it would be justified. You'd still have to take The Test, however, like every other Clan cat. I'm sure you'd get DarkClan, though. Maybe The Choosers are already watching you. Maybe they've been watching you your whole life, and you haven't even realized it."

---
Gila blinked as Shadowfur talked. Everything the tom had just said went right over her little gray head. Test? Choosers? What did any of that mean? "You clan life seems too difficult." The she-cat said, watching Shadowfur with a blank face. "It's so much easier to be free. You don't have to follow rules and it's all about pleasing yourself. Plus, you don't have to take some test to be a loner- whatever that consists of." She spoke, settling herself down in the sand. The she-cat tucked her gray paws under her fluffy chest. She figured she might as well get comfortable. She didn't foresee this conversation ending soon.

(You probably should, but that's up to you)
Shadowfur nodded. "There are a lot of rules and regulations, yes, but there are also pros. There are always cats to talk to or hunt with. You're guaranteed a safe place to sleep every night, no matter what. You have the opportunity to have kits in a safe environment, where they won't constantly be preyed on by coyotes and snakes. It's a lot better than constantly fending for yourself, in my opinion. And plus, the rules help to keep order. Without them, there would be absolute chaos."

[ Okay^^ Is a calico acceptable?]
--
Gila furrowed her brow at the explanation of clan life. It did sound nice, yes, but it already seemed chaotic. Checking borders, always talking, bad personalities.. Sure, having a set place to sleep every night and safe place to raise kits was nice, but rules? That didn't stick well with Gila. She didn't see the need. "But you're still basically fending for yourself. You had to fend for yourself when you met me, when your brother came, and when that patrol passed through. If your life is like that, it doesn't seem like there are many pros."

(Eh, not really. A calico pelt would really stand out against the sand)
Shadowfur nodded. "I suppose you have a point. So then tell me, what are the pros of living a loner's life? Besides not having rules to follow, of course." He flicked his tail, the long black appendage stirring up some sand in its wake. His wide eyes fixated themselves on Gila, waiting for whatever answer she would give. He wanted to know what really was so great about living alone with no one else to lean on.

Gila nodded at Shadowfur's answer, then thought for a moment at his question. "Well, for one you don't have to listen to anyone. You get to do your own thing, not worry about doing the wrong thing. It's liberating, really. I couldn't imagine being confined to a camp with other cats that are practically competing with each other by the looks of it." The she-cat supposed her answer went with the whole "no rules" thing, but really, she didn't know how else to answer. She didn't know enough about clan life to establish a better answer, but from the way it seemed by the encounters she had seen so far, it didn't seem that much fun.

He nodded. "I can understand that. You know... Your life intrigues me. I've always wondered what it would be like to live outside of the Clans. To be without a sure home. Without cats to keep me company all the time. Without a nagging brother." He laughed at that. "I can't help but be fascinated by your way of life. Perhaps that's why I didn't kill you tonight. Perhaps it's because I wanted to know more about you and how you live."

"I'm not stupid. I would know if the stinger was in my paw," Antpaw hissed. Why was Adderstrike treating him like a kit? He was an apprentice, fully capable of fending for himself. He was a full-blooded DarkClanner at that. Antpaw was able to look out for himself no matter what. Though, deep down, there was a faint feeling of appreciation inside the ruddy tom. Never had he ever had a cat actually see if he was doing okay or if he was alright. For some reason it felt...nice that some cat was looking out for him, but he wasn't going to say or do anything about that.
Antpaw hobbled forward. He was in excruciating pain, but he still had to hunt. The prey wasn't going to catch itself, and Adderstrike was for sure not going to get something for Antpaw to eat.
