What's Firestorm about? I like mysteries but honestly I haven't read many.

I just finished Firestorm actually! It's really good! The series is by Navada Barr and they all take place in national parks. The main character's name is Anna, who is a park ranger. The premise of Firestorm is that she's an EMT working the Jackknife fire in Lasson National Park (Volcanic National Park in California. I've been there - it's really amazing.) But the group gets caught in a firestorm. It's kind of a lock-room mystery, only the locked room is a fire resistant tent (sorta a small, one person one) that each of the 10 stranded fire fighters + 2 EMTs get stuck in during the firestorm. 10 go in, but when they open up on of the tents, there's one of the crew with a knife in their back. They're all stranded due to the firestorm and an actual storm, so it's both a project to find out who out of the remaining crew is the murderer while also dealing with a ton of baggage that being stranded - a couple with injuries - means. Slightly more spoilery reactions: ;-; I love doing the thing where I knew who was the murderer almost before there was a murder. Not because it was easy to guess - it wasn't - but because I have a skill where my favorite character will either be the one to die or the one to do the killing. Guess which was which this time?

That sounds really good! I'll have to look out for it (after I finish the stack of books I just bought... looking forward to it but I won't be getting anything else to read until the fall)! I really like locked room mysteries. I'm pretty good at guessing the killers in TV shows after watching a few episodes. My mom and I invented a drinking game (only water and soda, no actual alcohol, I was 15 at the time) for one TV show for one murder mystery show. Whoever didn't guess the killer correctly had to finish their drink. Reading murder mysteries is always fun, even if it's harder to apply that drinking game to them. (:

That sounds like so much fun. XD
I need to work out what to read next out of my TBR pile, honestly.

Figuring out what to read next is always a pain. Normally I try to go with whatever I've had the longest, but unfortunately for me that is currently a book on the Black Death and... no. Not ready for that yet.

Oh yeah! I have a ton of books on the holocaust because I'm interested in WW2, but not ready for that either. I need something I know I wont be crying nonstop over.
Currently I've binge read half of Blood Heir by Amelie Wen Zhao and it's pretty good!
Oooo! Thanks for the recommendation, Smilii!

Oof, yeah, that's a tough one. Tragic books can be absolutely amazing but it takes so much for me to work my way up to reading them. They have to be proceeded and followed by something light and fluffy, and unfortunately I am running down on those books.

Huuum. Light and fluffy, light and fluffy ...
Have you tried ... admittedly they're graphic novels, but "The Tea Dragon Society" is very fluffy, as is " The Cardboard Kingdom" and "Nimona" is very sweet.
The picture book "A Family is a Family is a Family" is heartwarming.
"The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend" is a good novel. So is "Stargirl".

I'll have to check them out! I've actually read Nimona already and I absolutely loved it. My mom sent it to me for my birthday a couple of years ago. Basically all the gifts I get from family are books, journals, or gift cards to bookstores, which I'm perfectly happy with.
that's what I get for bringing books with me to Christmas parties when I was a kid, so thank you younger me (:

XD Oh SAME. They know me well. That's the gifts I get from them as well. I'm fairly sure I did the same thing. I've been inseparable from stories even when I hated reading (audiobooks, whoot). On that note, I'm reading my history book for school.

Oooh, what book are you reading for school? What era of history? Admittedly I honestly don't know much about history but I find it pretty interesting.
also upon rereading this post I realize that I don't need to say "admittedly" and "honestly" in the same sentence but..... idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's called America: A Narrative History. Also I'm impressed I remembered the title without looking. It's American History from Colonial to about 1800s.
I'm also reading a book called Blood Heir, which is far more interesting. Though I'm halfway through and still waiting for the actual plot to happen.

Ah, coolio. Are you majoring in history or is it just a school requirement? Or maybe you're just interested in it, idk.
xD I've unfortunately read a lot of books like that, where the plot doesn't happen for a very long time. Or at least I've started a lot of books like that. When the plot finally does begin, what's it supposed to be about?

Nope. Majoring in English. And it isn't a school requirement, it's a job requirement. I need to be in school to work, so I had to pick an "easy" class to do over the summer. Here's hoping that's what it is.
I actually have no idea. I'm pretty much blind reading. We're just character building at this point and I'm getting a generic "world thinks I'm a monster but am I?" Inner struggle. Which you know the answer to. But it's interesting enough to keep me reading.
Kat: Both of those books are on my to be read pile. XD
Y'all are making me want to reread Nimonia. XD

Ah, I see. Well, I hope you enjoy it and that it actually is easy.
I read a book where essentially the entire thing was the character questioning whether or not she was a monster like the world thought. Must admit that I got tired of it pretty quickly. I don't know. I like internal struggles, but that particular one can be a bit... meh. Well, it really just depends on the writer, doesn't it? If it's interesting enough for you to keep watching, then I'd say that's all you need.
Also, you should definitely read Nimonia. It's fantastic. Definitely worth your time. (;

ash I'd love to help out! What genres do you like? I'm guessing fantasy and such based on what you're currently reading, but anything else?

ehh for fantasy it really depends, i dont really like high fantasy, fantasy elements are ok of course i really love gothic and classic literature and things inspired by it

mmm.... oof. Unfortunately I don't read a ton of classics or classic-esque stuff, so I can't really help you there. Jane Eyre is nice for sort of romantic gothic, but I'm not sure if that's what you're going for.

If you ever wanted gothic classics, Carmilla is good and less read than Dracula. For more modern, I read halfway through a Discovery of Witches at far too young an age, but it was really good in retrospect and I'm fairly sure that's romance gothic. Huuuuuum. I'd have to think more on that genre. But if you like Good Omens, you might try some other books by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimen. Graveyard Book is top tear and the Discworld series is really nice (Terry Pratchett recommends not starting with book 1 though. Which you can do, since all the books can be read out of other. Suggestion from me would be to start with Guards! Guards!)

I'm fine with inner conflict around whether someone is a monster or not, but it needs to have other stuff going on too. I've gotten pretty far in the book now and thus far nothing much. I'll probably finish it, but not the sequel I can see on the horizon. I'm also reading Loki: Where Mischief Lies off and on. Oh I love Nimonia. I really need to reread it. I forgot the whole plot pretty much.

How's the book about Loki? I haven't read it, but the title sounds vaguely familiar.

Today's mood is let's reread all of Artemis Fowl in protest to the movie. I cry. I cry a lot. Having read the book there were so many places that were just so awkward. Awkward even from a position that hadn't read it.
And then to see the deleted scenes and cry again, because it started out with almost the canon plot. But nope. Shove in the useless, non-canon McGuffin. It felt so aaaaaawkward.
This has been your 4 AM Book to Movie rant.

Hey, can't argue with a 4 am Book To Movie rant. Honestly the only adaptation that I can think of that genuinely did the original text justice is The Princess Bride. Both the movie and book are phenomenal. I'm sure there are other good (maybe even great) adaptations out there, but that is the one that sticks out to me.

Very fair opinion! Terry Pratchett's series of movies (Hogfather, Going Postal, The Color of Magic/Light Fantastic, Wyrd Sisters, and Soul Music) were all near pitch perfect to the books and I loved them. They're the only accurate adaptions that I can think of. Howl's Moving Castle and the new Little Vampire movies are good, albeit different adaptions of the books of the same name.
That's all I got though.
