Roswell knew when to keep quiet and when to speak up, so he knew that for this he needed to remain silent and listen to what the others were bringing up. He wouldn't have any good ideas to add, so instead he listened to everything Hazel, Val, and Callie had to say, nodding along to show he was at least acknowledging everything.
As Hazel went over her final plan for the four of them to put into play, Roswell spoke up. "Sounds good," he echoed the words of the other two detectives before glancing over at Val, nodding to her to let her know he was ready whenever she was.

With as many dates as Tortie had been on in her life time, it was safe to say she had a pretty steady ratio of boring ones and exciting ones. There were a few terrifying ones thrown in there as well, such as the one she had been buried alive in a graveyard, but at the end of the day it had been a learning experience and wasn't as terrifying as Tortie thought it would have been. Had she learned to not go on dates that were advertised online? Nope. But she had learned how to survive being trapped under the earth.
A few times as she tried to open her mouth to talk she ended up with a good amount of dirt in there. She shook her head, spitting out as much dirt as she could until she was finally able to give a very short run down on what needed to be done before she herself was completely buried. "Shirt should come off, use that to cover your face. Don't panic, save your breath. Keep digging up." That was as far as she could get - not that she had much more to give Ives anyway - before she was submerged in dirt.
Looked like it was time for her to survive this scenario a second time in her life.

Right, everyone knew the plan, once her detectives agreed to it, she briefly went over the plan with the other officers and got out of the car, signaling for the everyone for get in position. If all went well, hopefully she and the team going inside with her could essentially smoke Axlesen out to one of the exists where there would be plenty of people waiting to stop him.
Inhaling to steady herself, Hazel gave one last nod to the others and entered the warehouse.
At first it was silence other than the bubbling noises of chemicals in barrels around them. This could get ugly if they didn’t play their cards right.
Hazel cast a small glance back over at Callie, making sure she was there.
Now to make sure Axelson was.
Moving further inside, Hazel motioned for everyone to stop as a loud, obnoxious humming of “she blinded me with science” by Thomas Dolby echoed throughout the eerie warehouse.
That was him. Weird choice in song though, Hazel could only think of two other people that frequently listened to this song...too often, and those were her parents.
Gesturing again, Hazel made the motion for everyone to enter and surround him, taking them lead as she turned a corner to face Axelson.
Luckily for them, he didn’t seem to have anything dangerous on him at the time.
”Axelson, is it? Put your hands up, you’re coming with us,“ Hazel instructed.
The tall, gangly looking man froze in his spot, his clothes hanging from his skin in a way that made him appear even scrawnier somehow.
“You’re cops, aren’t you?” He questioned.
Hazel nodded slightly. “Mmhm.”
“Captain Wynn, I presume? Kinda upsetting that the bomb didn’t work.”
“Yeah, we’re gonna have a talk about that later, right now, you’re under arrest-“
Just then, Axlesen turned on his feet, that sort of crazed look in his eyes that Hazel had seem far too many times before in far too many different people for comfort. “Or am I?” He asked, pulling a thing of tear gas out of his long coat pockets. “Aha!” Throwing the tear gas, Hazel instantly moved to cover her face and backed up, eyes trained on the perp as he bolted for it.
“He’s going for one of the exits! Everyone be ready to catch him!”

Pulling up to the graveyard, Norman rushed out of the car without really thinking. Nuru and Nyathera had to be here somewhere, and hopefully...Tortie and Ives were as well, preferably alive. Norman would never be able to forgive himself if either of them died because of his stupid actions. “Alistair, Noah, you two circle around, check the perimeter, I’m going to find my friends,” he explained and started off. Behind him, he could hear Alistair begin to protest. “Sir, you don’t have any gear, you’ll be defenseless if you run into one of them, I’d advise you to stay here and let Noah and I handle this-“
Norman shook his head, blocking out the rest of what he said.
Maybe it was dumb for him to rush in, head first, but his friends were in danger and he was going to get them out of it.
Pushing off again, Norman ignored the pain in his foot, ignored the little voice - what was left of his reason - urge him to do what Alistair said and pushed forward.
He was going to find Ives and Tortie and he was going to get them out of this mess, no matter what.
Letting out a gasp for breath, Ives clambered up out of the dirt, pushing his body further and further out until he was free of his unwanted grave and plopped down on the ground next to it, blinking away some of the dirt from his eyelashes as he stared up at the night sky, panting heavy. “I honestly cannot believe we just got buried alive...and survived,” he breathed out, not making a move to get up.
Chances were, Nuru and Nyathera were gone right now, he didn’t really have anything to worry about other than the dirt he probably ate...oh also, he definitely needed to shower later, but the point was that he survived, and it was all thanks to Tortie’s weird dating habits.

Callie had gotten out of the car, returning Hazel’s nod to let her captain know she was ready. Like Hazel, Callie had taken one last deep breath before following the older woman into the warehouse.
She kept close to the small group as they moved through the building, noting the barrels of chemicals surrounding them, and the sharp smell in the air. Now, Callie enjoyed it when perps were interesting. Kept the job from getting boring. But of all the things, did this have to be Axelsen’s thing? Chemicals were not fun. She had learned this when Missy had tried to make home-made hair dye when the two of them were fifteen. It hadn’t gone well, which was why Callie’s hair, which had gone down to her mid-back when she was fifteen, now only went just past her shoulders.
Well, that and practicality reasons for her job, but who cared about those?
When Hazel signalled for the group to stop, Callie did so, listening as humming filled the air, accompanied by the bubbling of the chemicals and the odd mysterious metallic clunking sound.
Once again, Callie liked some variety. But this perp was creepy and she wasn’t here for it.
She followed her captain to surround Axlesen, standing next to Hazel and doing her best to look at least semi-tough. As they expected, though, Axelsen bolted as according to the plan. Unfortunately, this was not before he unleashed tear gas on the group.
Backing up, Callie also did her best to cover her face, covering a cough as her eyes burned. Now it was up to the others at the exits to catch Axelsen.
————
Val had done her best to focus on the job Hazel had given her, rather than what was happening inside the warehouse. With a nod to Roswell and to Hazel, the detective had headed with Roswell and the other detectives to find the exits of the building. At each exit Val had stationed two of the officers, leaving just one door for her and Roswell to guard themselves.
She stood on one side, standing up against the wall of the building so that Axelsen wouldn’t immediately see them when he exited the warehouse. With a silent gesture, she indicated that Roswell should stand on the other side.
It was what felt like a very long and tense wait, when in reality it was probably nothing more than a few minutes. Eventually, though, Val was sure she could hear faint thudding. Thudding that grew gradually louder.
Footsteps. Axelsen was heading towards their exit.
She exchanged a look with Roswell, preparing to make her move the second the door opened. She and Roswell had to move quickly, if they didn’t want him to get away. This guy was tall, which gave him a decent chance of outpacing at least Val, if not Roswell too, unless they were fast about this.
As soon as the door opened, Val was ready. With Axelsen running like he was, Val didn’t even really have to do much - sticking out a leg for Axelsen to trip over was all she needed to do.
“Going somewhere?” Val asked as she pulled Axelsen to his feet, one hand holding his shoulder while the other had a firm grip on his shirt. He wasn’t going to get away. “You really thought you were going to be able to blow up a captain in their own precinct, didn’t you?”
She looked at Roswell with a nod.
“Want to do the honours and cuff him, Cuni?”

Once at the graveyard Noah stopped the car and soon got out. He stopped himself from rushing on out there to search for any signs of the cannibalistic food truck workers. He could be an idiot at times - a lot of times really - but he realized that it was dark and that he would need to make sure he was on full alert going after these criminals. He also realized he was the only one here that wasn't injured in some way, so he had to be the one to step up and take over more of this. Running out there without a game plan wouldn't work in his current situation.
While he knew where Alistair was coming from, Noah knew that Norman wasn't going to listen. "We might as well let him do his thing," Noah pointed out. It wasn't a good idea to let Norman go out there without anything to defend himself with just in case he ran into the food truck workers, but they couldn't waste time arguing with him. "While he does his, we can do ours. If you're still holding up." They still hadn't been able to get any real medical help for Alistair's wound, and Noah was still worried about his partner. Truth be told, he was more worried about that than he was Norman at the moment. And yeah, he was worried about Norman's friends, but Alistair had literally taken a knife for Noah, that wasn't something he was going to forget with ease.

Gasping for air, Tortie emerged from the earth like some kind of dirt angel that had been trapped underground for some kind of misdeed that had been blown way out of proportion. As she shimmied the rest of her body out of the ground she plopped down dramatically onto solid earth, letting herself catch her breath for a moment as she just lay there. Eventually she caught her breath and glanced in the direction Ives's voice came from. "What, did you doubt me when I said I could get us out of this?" She questioned somewhat breathlessly and with a tinge of offense in her words. People needed to have a little bit more faith in her when she told them she knew how to survive being buried alive. Tortie knew her way around the world, she had skills and knowledge that went beyond just seducing people.

The warehouse was...kinda creepy if Roswell was being honest. He had seen a lot of creepy places in his line of work, but warehouses were always some of the creepier things to investigate. Nobody knew what exactly could be inside a warehouse, and even if it seemed empty there could be all sorts of things hidden somewhere somehow.
Before he could let these thoughts engulf him he caught movement coming from Val. He turned to look over at her, noticing her give him the signal to move against the wall on the other side of her. He nodded to show her he noticed and made his way over to stand against the wall, pushing himself as close to it as he possibly could. He didn't want the criminal to notice him before he and Val could do anything. Roswell wouldn't be able to forgive himself if he was the reason this whole case flopped.
Which, he told himself he wasn't going to let himself get lost in these thoughts, but if he ruined this case then that meant Hazel's life could still be on the line, and Roswell didn't want to be responsible for his captain getting injured, or worse.
After what felt like forever standing there in poised silence, the thudding of footsteps echoed throughout the warehouse. They were coming closer and closer, and Roswell readied himself just in case he would have to chase after the perpetrator.
Though it turned out Val was the quicker one of the two, already on it as the door opened and the tall, gangly man shot through. Before Roswell could do a thing Val had the suspect on the ground, holding him in such a way that it would be hard for him to get away unless he had some real power behind him, but judging from his appearance he wasn't exactly all that strong. Quick and limber maybe, but speed was different than strength, Roswell knew that from personal experience.
Any other time he would have hesitated at being asked to cuff somebody, but even he realized that Val was a bit preoccupied right now and wouldn't be able to get the task done with her hands holding the lanky guy down. "The honor is all mine," he answered the other detective and brought out a set of handcuffs, making quick work putting them on. Hopefully that would keep the criminal from escaping.

Once Hazel got the all clear from the officers outside, she looked over to Callie. “Looks like Ruiz and Cuni got him outside,” she explained and turned to the other officers. “Start collecting the evidence, I want all of this taken care of,” Hazel said and gestured around them to the inside of the warehouse. There was no way she was leaving any of this here. It was dangerous, lethal, and not to mention: evidence.
They had caught the guy, and now Hazel was determined to make sure they kept him.
Once she was sure that the officers were doing their job, Hazel walked out to the exit Val and Roswell were at, walking over to join them. “Good job,” she told her detectives before looking down at Axleson. “As for you, I’ve got plenty of questions for you, I hope you take your little car ride to think up some good enough answers,” she told him and Axleson sneered in response.
Hazel glowered.
This guy had a lot to answer for and she was going to make sure that he did.

Alistair let out a small sigh as he watched Norman go. Well, if anything, he was a detective and probably knew what he was doing better than Alistair did, so he should probably just let him go off and do whatever it is he does. Hopefully it would all work out at the end of the day. So Alistair nodded and looked back towards Noah. ”I’m up for it,” he said with a nod. He was injured, sure, but nothing could stop him from doing his job.
Ives looked over towards Tortie, though he still made no move to get up. “No, no, it’s not that I doubted you,” he started quickly. “I just also kinda thought that we’d die, I said a last dying prayer and everything, just in case I did die,” Ives had never been huge into praying but when it came down to literal life or death situations, he would ask for whatever help he could get.
Looking back up at the sky, Ives took a big breath and blinked some remaining dirt off his eyes. “Wow, this is really not now I thought my night would go.”
As much as he would’ve liked to stay there and think about the odd sort of circumstances that had landed him in this position, he couldn’t, for right then, a familiar voice drifted through the graveyard.
“Ives! Tortie!”
Ives glanced up just in time to see Norman rush over towards them with absolutely no regard for his injured foot as he checked the two of them over to make sure they were okay. “Im so glad you two are okay, and not dead,” Norman said as he grabbed hold of both of them, pulling them into a group hug.
Ives was still a little out of it, between the alcohol and the nearly dying thing, and he definitely had a lot of questions for his friend, but right now, he was just happy that everyone seemed to be okay.

Noah pursed his lips in thought. He was worried about Alistair, and his partner must have lost a good amount of blood at this point since they had yet to get him any professional help. While he wasn’t a medical professional in the slightest, Noah realized that if Alistair really did need help at the moment then it would be more obvious. His partner would be swaying or stuttering over words. He’d be pale - not that it would be easy to see that in the dark - and he’d just be overall lethargic and sluggish. Alistair didn’t seem to be any of those things as far as Noah could tell, so surely that meant he was okay for now.
Allowing himself to worry a little less Noah decided to continue the investigation rather than try and bench Alistair for now. ”Alright, let’s wrap this up and save the day. Or night, let’s save the night.” With that he headed on into the dark, careful to keep on the alert for any signs of the criminals or the civilians.
- - - - -
Tortie continued to lay there as she caught her breath. She remembered the first time she had to dig herself out of a grave, and it had certainly been harder than it was the second time. She also didn’t have a buddy to talk to after the whole ordeal was over with. Yeah, she didn’t like that Ives had gotten into this situation, but having a buddy around was always nice even if she wasn’t as talkative as she usually was what with her lungs still lacking the oxygen they needed.
For a good while she didn’t say anything, only listened to Ives talk as he went on about how he had actually prayed and how this wasn’t the way he had assumed his night would go. ”I’ve learned to never really plan the whole night. Things could go from zero to a hundred real quick, like this one time -“ She never got to dive deeper into the start of her anecdote when the familiar voice of Norman cut her off.
”Ayy, hey, we didn’t die!” Tortie called out from where she lay, still not making any motion to get back up on her feet.
She didn’t make any complaints when Norman somehow managed to get her and Ives up for a group hug. Tortie put in enough effort of her own to stand for herself and wrap her arms around the two. For all the arguing she had done with Norman earlier she didn’t hold any ill feelings, and she had to admit it was nice to see him after her second time being buried alive. ”It would take a lot more to kill us. This wasn’t the first time this has happened to me.” If somebody wanted to kill Tortie then they’d have to do better than just burying her alive. If they wanted to bury her and expect her to stay down there then she needed to be actually dead when she was put in the ground.

Callie had, obeying Hazel’s instructions, worked on gathering as much evidence from the warehouse as possible, with the help of the officers who had accompanied her and Hazel earlier. There was a lot to get through, and some of these chemicals were very dangerous and has to be handled carefully. The woman had worked on collecting the evidence that was safe, and arranged for a team with specialised equipment to come and deal with the chemicals and any other more dangerous evidence in the warehouse.
After this, she’d accompanied Axelson and Val, Roswell and Hazel back to the precinct.
It wasn’t a long car ride, and very little was said what with Axelson being in the car. As soon as they had returned to the precinct, Callie had stored the evidence and then stepped aside to quickly call Jason; she’d assumed her siblings would be worried about her after everything that happened. But Jason, who’d also been interpreting for Lola, had said that Lola’s response had been ‘oh, you’re alive’, which perhaps was a little more believable than what Callie had assumed the reaction would be.
After ending the brief call with her siblings and making them promise not to eat all the food in her fridge, she headed over to where the others were gathered outside the interview room. Sitting inside, at the table, was Axelson.
“Okay,” Val was saying “what’s the strategy here? And who’s going in, and who’s watching?”
She was, of course, referring to the one-way mirror which would allow the others to watch the interview without being seen by Axelson. Callie assumed that Hazel would want in on this interview, and Val seemed to assume so as well.
“I’m assuming you’ll have some questions for him, Captain,” Val commented as she folded her arms, glancing into the room at their perp
Callie didn’t much care about whether she watched or partook in this interrogation. It wasn’t usually necessarily her strong suit anyway, though it depended on the perp. That was the same for most of the 99, though; no one detective’s method of investigation was ever perfect for every perp.

Jules surprised himself by actually watching the race with baited breath. It felt stupid while doing so, since Jules was already certain of the outcome even if he had tried to be hopeful about the matter. And yet the moment the two set off, Jules was wide eyed tracing the smoke of the engines and attempting to watch for TJ.
Beau was the one who moved first, Tj initially being left at the starting line to only follow behind.
And yet... Jules couldn't believe his eyes when he first saw that TJ crossed. And Jules was fairly certain that Beau hadn't come across the line first, a statement only solidified as Beau trailed on after.
It took a moment, but in a highly undignified manner, Jules screamed in laugher with a cheer. The detective immediately started making his way to TJ just so he could grab his partner's shoulders with a wild grin and a statement no would could fight Jules on since no one around could read his mind, "I knew you could do it, you funny son of a gun!!!"
Cat had sorta wished that N's reaction was just as much disbelief as hers. Though, she really had to commend Sergeant and his ability to hide it, as she was certain that it made him seem a lot more serious in the eyes of citizens. Despite that, Cat's eyes flicked back to Shiva, as N had asked a fitting question in response.
The girl in question didn't take much time to respond, "Yeah, like, all the time. He's a little goblin out here, but not a lot of people really have the confidence to stand up to a goose that size and with that much... anger? I see people chasing him all the time trying to get their stuff- lunches, toys, soccer balls. And honestly? I can understand why, it was hell trying to chase him down and get back our ball one time. We had to wait for him to go and steal something else before sneaking into his nest or something."
"He has a nest?" Cat perked up in curiosity, "This goose brings stuff there, right?" Shiva nodded and with that confirmation, she turned to N with a question, "If we went to the goose's nest and found any of the picnic baskets there, that would confirm that humans are innocent in this case and we could call in animal control to get this goose!"
Shiva spoke up once more, adding in a little, "I could even bring you guys there if needed?"

This was… Well, this wasn’t what N had expected at all. He had never worked a case quite like this one, where an animal was accused of being the criminal, and while a part of him wanted to call all of this some twisted joke, the sincerity with which Shiva was talking about all this made him stop and really believe that she had no reason to be pulling his leg. N had dealt with a lot of liars during his time as a detective, and he had gotten rather good at picking out lies from the truth, and there didn’t seem to be a hint of dishonesty in the girl’s voice.
Looked like today was about putting a goose behind bars.
Before he could comment on anything Cat had said, Shiva spoke up again, his attention back on her as she offered to bring them to the goose’s nest. Typically he wouldn’t want any civilians to get too involved in a case, but she was just going to bring them to the nest, so how dangerous could that even be?
”That would be great if you could. Thank you, Shiva,” N replied with a small, yet warm, smile. With as unorthodox as this case was turning out to be, getting a little extra help was more than welcomed.

They were still alive.
Knowing that they were still alive was enough for Norman. He had messed up today, majorly, but right now all he could think about was that Ives and Tortie were alive and okay, and...covered in a lot of dirt, which was disgusting but Norman was willing to overlook it right now, he could clean himself off later.
Wait...
He was hugging them.
Norman was used to hugging Ives, he hugged all of his friends a lot, but around Tortie, he had a reputation that he was supposed to keep up, he couldn’t let people from the 99 see him like this.
“Tortie, if you tell anyone that I hugged you, I will deny it and leave you here in this graveyard,” he warned quietly, finally pulling away from the hug. “Alright, we need to get you two to safety, then I can find Nuru and Nyathera, arrest them, and make sure they can’t ever do something like this again,” Norman explained as he looked around as if to try and spot the two cannibals right there.

Hazel eyed the man inside the interrogation room, her eyebrows knitting together as she watched him. Axleson wasn’t doing much, mostly just sitting there, rocking his seat back and forth and picking something out of his teeth. From here, he didn’t look nearly smart enough to pull off what he tried to...which might’ve been why he failed, or maybe he wasn’t in this alone.
Then, as if sensing that he was being watched, Axleson stared right at the window, right where Hazel was. She knew he couldn’t see her, but it was still a little creepy.
Axleson gave a crazed smile and Hazel’s face grew somber.
“I wish I could place his face,” she muttered under her breath. Not being able to figure out how he knew her or why he wanted her dead was really starting to bug her.
Shaking her head a little, Hazel turned back to the others. “Dawson and I will go in and interrogate him, Cuni, Ruiz, you two stay in here,” she ordered and looked over to Callie. “Unless you’d rather stay here instead?” She questioned.

TJ still couldn’t believe that he had actually won, he didn’t even know what he was doing and quite frankly, part of him had honestly thought that he was going to crash and die, and even if he didn’t die during the crash, he was sure he would once he got back to the precinct and had to tell Val that he crashed her death bike. But instead, that hadn’t happened, instead he had won and that was...well that was a little weird, but he wasn’t complaining.
“I’m not sure how I did it,” he confessed to Jules, still beaming about his victory. “But this is going down in my memoir as the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” he added with a grin.
Beau watched as Tyrone and Tony celebrated their victory. Honestly it was pretty cute how excited they were...and the fact that they believed Tony won all by himself. But Beau was content to let him think that, he really didn’t want a cat anyways.
Waiting until they had finished celebrating, Beau walked over to join them. “So, Tyrone, guess this means it’s you and me for the last round, isn’t it?” He asked and smirked a little, fixing his bow tie so it wasn’t crooked anymore. “I’m ready whenever you are,” he added and gestured his head back towards the bikes.

As Norman pulled away from the hug and threatened her, Tortie merely scoffed and shot him a look, her lip pulled up in a half smirk and an eyebrow raised. ”As if I’m scared of being in a graveyard by myself. You can get away with a lot in a graveyard, though it’s more fun when it’s with somebody else and you can act all scared and get all up on them and then they get all up on you and...it’s a good time, really good.” She stood there for a moment in silence, nodding her head as she went over all the times she had been in a graveyard with or without other people there with her. She wasn’t even aware that Norman had said anything else, she was just standing there having a good time in her thoughts, realizing that graveyards really needed a better rep than they were given. Graveyards either kept her on her toes or gave her a really fun time, they weren’t scary or anything like that. People were just weird and thought dead people were frightening, when really, they were just dead people, nothing more, nothing less.

Wait...what?
Norman instantly let go of Tortie, breaking up the hug. “That’s disgusting and I hope your ancestors are looking up from hell and are ashamed,” he told her, dusting himself off. Well, now that he got a bit too much information about Tortie, it was time to bring these two back to Noah and Alistair. He wasn’t about to risk getting them hurt. “Come on, lets go-“ He was cut off by a voice.
“Leaving so soon?” Nyathera practically purred out as she walked out of the shadows, a large knife in hand. “What’s the rush?”
Norman glowered. “Ready for round two?” he asked, shifting himself into a defensive stance.
Nyathera laughed. “Round one wasn’t even much of a match,” she said with a smirk.
Norman stood his ground, positioning himself in front of Tortie and Ives. “I’ll handle her, you two go,” he ordered quickly.

Seriously, at this point Norman just needed to realize that Tortie was a fully open person about everything in her life. ... Okay, maybe not everything, there were some things that did need to be prompted before she would talk about it, but other than a few things she was an open book and always ready to mention some off the wall story of hers. The fact that Norman wasn't used to that by now was surprising. "Oh, I know they are, but I'll be getting the last laugh when I die and become queen of Hell once they see all my sins stacked up." Tortie was well aware she wasn't going anywhere good once she died, but if she was going down then she was going to be the best at being the worst.
Tortie straightened up and turned her gaze over to where one of the cannibals from earlier stepped out of the shadows, asking for another round. "You didn't even give me round one, we can't start round two just yet," Tortie called over to the woman as Norman stepped in front of her and Ives as if he could stop anything from getting to them.

Callie couldn’t help but look to the Captain with some surprise when she suggested that she go in with her while Roswell and Val watched from outside the room. Callie has once been thrown out of an investigation for offering the perp candy. Another time for blasting music at ungodly volumes as an interrogation technique, which failed because the perp just so happened to be a heavy metal fan who blasted all of their music constantly anyway.
“Me?” Callie asked, before nodding, a little bewildered “Of course! That’s fine by me.”
Val too nodded in agreement with Hazel’s plan, and with that confirmation in place Callie followed her Captain into the room. Once inside, she laid all the files and evidence they had collected thus far on the table in front of Axelsen. After that, she stepped back to allow Hazel to come forward, perching on the table to one side.
“Hey, remember us? I’m Detective Dawson. You might not have noticed before, so I’d like you to take this opportunity to note that I’m a cute blonde. And this is Captain Wynn, who you may remember from such events as attempting to blow her up. you can see, there isn’t exactly much room for you to deny the charges brought against you. Our evidence is pretty airtight at this point. But Captain Wynn and I are hoping you might be able to fill in a few details for us.”
Now was time to ask the questions. She figured she should start the ball rolling before handing over to the Captain, who could take control of the interview from there. Callie wasn’t stupid; she knew that giving Axelsen a false sense of security by having Callie start the interview and then giving Hazel control to give him a bit of a scare was a good interview technique. Worth a try, anyway.
“How do you know Captain Wynn? Secondly, why did you attempt to blow her up? This is obviously not payback for your previous arrests by officers in this precinct, or you would’ve focused on them and not Captain Wynn.
And finally, what’s your star sign? Not in a flirty kind of way, I don’t find trying to blow up my boss an attractive quality in a man. I just have a running tally going to try and find out which star sign commits the most crimes, and which commits the most of each type of crime. This is very important to me, thank you.”

Norman let out a small sigh, looking over towards Tortie. “Listen, I know you’re trying to help, but you’re a civilian, I need you to get somewhere safe so you don’t get hurt on my watch, so can you maybe just listen to me for once?” He questioned, giving Tortie a pointed look. Now really wasn’t the time for her to come over and do her Tortie stuff and get them all killed or something.
“Look at you two, bickering like some old married couple,” Nyathera interrupted. ”It makes me sick.”
Norman glanced over at Tortie and shuddered. “Yeah me too,” he said and looked back to Nyathera. Thoughts of being married to Tortie aside, he couldn’t focus on all of this at once. “Also would you mind staying out of this for five minutes? I’m having a conversation here, I’ll get to you in a minute,” he promised and looked back to Tortie. “Anyways, I need you and Ives to leave,” he explained again.

Hazel stayed back as Callie asked the questions. She kept to the corners and paced slowly around the room, just fast enough that Axelson kept glancing her way. He was getting nervous. Good.
Callie brought up some good questions, and some...well some that weren’t as important to Hazel but were still important to Callie so they mattered.
Axleson glanced over at Hazel again before looking back at Callie. “I don’t have to answer to you,” he started off stubbornly.
“Answer the questions, Axleson,” Hazel ordered in a cool, steady voice from behind him.
Axleson turned around in his seat however by the time he went to look at Hazel, she had already walked over to the side, keeping mostly in the shadows of the room.
He was starting to sweat now, that was good.
“I uh...” he started slowly, eyes following Hazel until he looked back to Callie. “I don’t really know her personally,” he started. “I knew...her parents.”
Hazel stopped in her tracks for only a moment.
Now they were getting somewhere.

There wasn't a lot that made Tortie stop in her tracks, but what the cannibal girl had just said had done just that.
The idea of her and Norman being some old married couple was downright gross, like stepping in a pile of poop that a dog had just made like ten seconds ago and it was in the middle of summer when the temperature was, like, 91 but with humidity it was 110. Norman had his fun moments, sure, but never, ever would she want to get involved with him, and luckily Tortie knew Norman felt the same way. To be honest the thought of marrying anybody left a slightly sour taste in her mouth. It wasn't like she was opposed to the whole idea of matrimony and all that, and there had been a point in her life some years ago where she had thought the idea to be nice and something she would enjoy, but after some experiences...well, it would take a lot for her to go so far as to give herself away to marriage.
Usually she could get rid of these thoughts, but for some reason they wanted to cling inside her mind more than usual. It wasn't this unusual when she was alone, but with other people around she could usually bounce right back. Maybe everything that had happened tonight was just finally starting to get to her.
Deflated ever so slightly, Tortie took a step back. "Fine, but don't get used to me listening," she replied rather shortly, giving Norman a look that said even though she was backing down to him now didn't mean it would always be like that.

Was...was Tortie actually listening? Well this was...new, to say the least. Norman had to say, he appreciated it. Once Tortie and Ives were safe from danger, he could finally focus on the actual threat here.
Nyathera.
“Believe me, I won’t,” Norman told Tortie. He doubted anyone would get used to Tortie willingly listening to them. It wasn’t her style, much like it also wasn’t Norman’s style. He hated to say it but they did have similar styles, at least in that case. “Now go with Ives and-“ Norman paused, glancing around. “...Where’s Ives?” During his argument with Tortie - and to some extent, Nyathera as well - he had lost track of his friend.
However just then, as if to answer his question for him, a loud war cry like scream came from behind and Norman turned to look just in time to see Ives leap off the ground and fling his entire body right at Nyathera.
She clearly wasn’t expecting that and got knocked off balance.
The two of them tumbled to the ground, Nyathera lost grip of her knife and it fell out of her hand.
”Tortie, change of plans, grab the knife!” Norman said quickly, jumping into action. He didn’t condone Ives’ actions but there was no denying that this was as close as they had ever come to actually stopping Nyathera, he had to act on it.

Axelson's statement about not having to answer to Callie caused her to fold her arms and raise one eyebrow. Her slight Texas accent came out stronger than it usually did in her next statement of warning to the man.
"Now you listen to me," she warned "I already don't exactly appreciate you trying to blow up my boss. If you start getting sassy with me then you and I are about to have a real problem."
Hazel then ordered him to answer the questions, with her usual cool but authoritative tone of voice. After that, it wasn't difficult to get answers out of Axelson. She stopped short when he mentioned Hazel's parents. That wasn't exactly the answer she had been expecting, to be honest. She cast a glance to Hazel because, well, Hazel knew a lot more about her own parents than Callie did, for obvious reasons. Perhaps this was something Hazel would want to ask him about herself.
Still, she looked back to Axelson, hopping down from the desk and facing him, putting both hands on the table.
"Okay, you're gonna have to do a lot more explaining than that. What do her parents have to do with all of this?"
Their evidence on this guy was airtight, they really did just need an explanation of who had hired him and why. This information about Hazel's parents was so obviously the key to the answers they were looking for. Though Callie had an unsettling feeling that they were about to open a can of worms.

Well that was...that wasn't something Tortie had expected. She didn't know what exactly she had expected out of this situation, but it wasn't Ives flinging himself at the cannibal lady with a war cry that meant business. It seemed like cannibal lady hadn't expected that either, but really, who would have expected that in the first place?
It took Tortie a good second or two before she realized what Norman had called over to her. Once it had registered in her brain she was quick to act, jumping forward and then ducking to the ground to grab the knife, securing it in her grasp. "Got it!" She called over to Norman. "What do I do now, stab her?" Tortie had no qualms in stabbing somebody - it wouldn't be the first time, and she was sure as heck it wouldn't be the last.

By now Axleson was sweating, Hazel could see it from here. He didn’t have the guile to hold off. Sooner or later, they’d break him, and by the looks of it, it was gonna be soon. “How do you know Doctor Isaac Wynn and Doctor Mary Wynn? No offense but despite the wrinkles you don’t seem old enough to be a work acquaintance,” Hazel commented, looking over at Axleson through the corner of her eyes.
Plus not to mention, her parents had been dead for at least a good twenty years by now.
Axleson glanced around from Hazel to Callie, clearly still sweating. ”I uh..”
”Just answer the question, Axleson, I’m sure we all have places to be,” Hazel told him sharply.
Axleson paused for a moment or so before finally, he caved.
“I was a new scientist working on the same project as them, they stole it from me and took everything from me, you’re parents ruined my life!” Axleson shouted angrily, glaring over at Hazel.
Hazel kept her gaze steady. “Get in line,” she told him, voice dry.
Axleson continued to glare. “It took me awhile but I finally figured out my perfect plan for vengeance, they took away something that I loved, so I’d take away something that they loved, you.”
Hazel ignored them comment. Her relationship with her parents had been complicated at best, but even she knew that there was no love there.
“Well, I hate to tell you this, but Isaac and Mary are dead, nothing you do to me is going to get back at them now,” she explained and Axleson’s shoulders fell.
”They’re dead?” He echoed and Hazel nodded. “So...So I did all of this for nothing?”
Hazel moved over to the table, placing her hands down on the cold surface as she met his gaze. “Fraid so, maybe next time you try to blow someone up, you should do your research first.”

Callie let Hazel ask her questions then, watching at the Captain but the final pieces of pressure on that made Axelson break. What she noted, though, was Hazel’s attitude towards her parents. That was something that saddened Callie to know, that Hazel’s parents had ruined her life, as she saw it. But they were also dead, and so Callie’s thoughts of maybe mentioning something to Hazel later went out of the window. Maybe it was better not to give the Captain her sympathy for what her parents had done if they were already dead and buried.
Either way, she gave a triumphant smile after the interaction between Hazel and Axelson.
“Thank you kindly for the confession, hon,” she said “That’s very helpful to us.”
She folded her arms as she lifted her chin, looking down from Axelson through her glasses.
“Fortunately, my sister is in town and she’s a prosecution lawyer, and a very good one. I’m sure she’d be delighted to make sure you go down for a very long time.” Callie commented confidently
Double Dawson, indeed. Missy would be only too happy to take a little work here for a while.
With that, she turned her blue eyes to Hazel.
“Well, Captain, I think we have everything we need,” she said, her gaze flicking back to Axelson “Unless our friend here has something else he’d like to say?”
Hazel’s strategy had worked perfectly, and Callie was glad of it. The two of them had made a good team, and they hadn’t had to bring in anyone else. No harsher strategies were needed, just smarter ones.

Norman gaze Tortie a puzzled look. “What? No! We’re not stabbing anyone, just keep the knife away from her!” Norman told her in exasperation. This whole situation was all sorts of weird, but the one thing he did know was that they weren’t stabbing anyone.
This was why Tortie was not a detective.
Turning his attention back towards Nyathera, Norman pulled out a paid of handcuffs he had grabbed from the police car and cuffed her as Ives got off. “As for you, let’s bring you in,” he told her and Nyathera sneered.
Ives got up and grinned as he looked from Tortie to Norman. “I have never felt so alive and I was just buried alive, is this what your job is always like?” He asked as he looked over towards Norman.
Norman glanced over at him and shrugged, a light smirk pulling at his lips. “Yeah, pretty much.”
—
It wasn’t too long before they got back to the car, however as they neared, Norman’s eyes widened in surprise as he saw that Alistair and Noah had already managed to find Nuru and arrest him. “Hey, you got the brother! Good, this means we’ve got them both,” Norman said as he walked over and nodded in greeting.
Now all that was left was to bring these two to the precinct and fill out the paperwork.
Then this agonizingly long day could finally be over.

Today was going to be an interesting page for her journal, that was for sure.
Hazel had kept a journal since she was young and she didn’t plan on stopping now, it was a good way to keep track of her thoughts and her experiences. Plus this way, if anything ever came up in court, she had a list of references in her journal...no seriously, she listed references for everything in her journal, just in case she ever needed it later in life. Was it a little paranoid? Yes, but paranoia had gotten her this far in life, why get rid of it now?
Smirking once Axleson confessed, Hazel moved away from the table and towards the door. “Doesn’t seem like he wants to add anything else,” Hazel commented as she watched the tall man squirm in his seat, clearly he hadn’t meant to over share like that.
Looking back over to Callie, Hazel sent her an approving smile and a nod of her head. “Good job Dawson, I couldn’t have done it without you,” she told her, giving Callie a pat on the back before leaving the room.
