I likely won’t be able to get anything up until at least the weekend or possibly even longer, but I’ll still be checking in. The fact that I don’t have much time is why I chose to do writing rather than replies because replies will just be super slow if I do those)

Everest couldn’t sleep. It was the night before the games—well, morning, technically, as it was almost 3 am— and he was alone in the training facility. He knew that by staying up so late he was risking his chance of being at his maximum potential for the start of the games, but his sudden insomnia wasn’t the only thing that threatened all of his training and preparation for this moment.
Amadrya.
Thunk. He sunk a dagger deep into the bullseye of his chosen target.
The girl had been occupying his thoughts ever since their first meeting. He hated it.
Thud. The next dagger hit the target, but it hit with the hilt rather than the blade, so it fell with a loud clank that echoed through the empty training room.
“Damnit!” He yelled, throwing his final dagger to the ground as he dropped into a seated crouch and dug his fingers into his hair. “Get ahold of yourself,” he commanded through gritted teeth, trying to push all thoughts of the district 7 girl out of his mind.
Picking the last dagger back up, he took a deep breath before throwing and sinking it with deadly aim. Much better. As he walked to go retrieve the trio of weapons, he argued with himself in his mind.
You know what happens when tributes fall for one another. It never ends well. They either both die, or one turns on the other.
Yes but—
No. No buts. In the arena, opening up to people makes you weak. It gives them a chance to exploit you. You know it’s true. The odds show that—
I don’t care what the odds show. She’s different.
Is she? You don’t think, if it came down to the two of you that she wouldn’t think twice about taking your life? She expects the same from you. Hell, she probably hates you. You’re a career. They all hate you. Even your precious career allies. And why shouldn’t they? You’re heartless. You were bred to kill, not to love. You can’t fool them to believe that you are capable of any less than ruthless bloodlust. Because that’s what you are. So why try and fool yourself?
No. It’s not true. I’m not heartless. I’m not.
Falling down to his knees, right in front of the target, Everest whispered brokenly, “I’m not.”

And hey, like I’ve said, someone needs to be in the final two with Burton so you never know. Though he’s doing the giving up and letting someone kill him so XD he would probs die before then or else make a very depressing final battle)

Everest gets so close to what he has waited his whole life for and could have easily taken out Burton, but he is so messed up over what he did and the fact that he truly is “heartless” that he just collapses on his knees before Burton and let’s him kill him?)
