owlspots ok!! if you could take sierraclan that would be Epic... lowkey wanted rainclan from the start jdsfsd
ANYWHO here was some stuff i jotted down yesterday.
1. what is the history of your clans? why did they come together in a territory, but leave borders between them?
essentially for convenience, and to help calm the absolute anarchy that was many, MANY rogues running amuck in the same area. as time passed, more and more cats began to congregate in the territory; it had a lucrative amount of prey, and there was hardly anywhere else to go where they would be undisturbed. as twolegs continued to release more cats into the wild, that's just where they went. it didn't help that the same twolegs who released the cats into the wild were beginning to cull them as well. all of this resulted in lots and lots of conflict, territory disputes, bloodshed, etc. before leadership types; falling rain (rainstar), rolling dust (duststar), sierra sky (sierrastar), and bay ripple (baystar) emerged and began to organize. what drove them to organization? as legend goes, apparitions and cats from starclan itself descended and threatened them with force. slowly but surely, the cats began to divide into groups, and those dangerous and not loyal to anyone were driven out for the good of the clans. of course, the clans didn't get along very well at all (and still dont, most of the time) but compared to the bloodshed that ruled the territory before the clans, times are much more peaceful and much less violent. the threat of twolegs still remain.
2. what are the cultural differences between your clans?
the clans all developed separately from each other and so there are many cultural differences. they are all heavily religious, although they have a few different beliefs when it comes to starclan. rainclan: located in the forest, rainclan is probably the least connected to starclan. which isnt to say theyre NOT religious, because they are, but they aren't as religious as the other three clans. due to a lack of direct connection to the stars (as its heavily forested in all of their territory save for a few sparse spots, and they can't connect with the stars or constellations as well as the other clans), rainclan just does kinda what they do lol. they still celebrate their own unique holidays. for rainclan, they celebrate the beginning of leaffall; the season that receives the most rain. they celebrate the rain and see it as a blessing from starclan. it might drive off certain prey, but it is mostly a symbol of renewal, rejuvenation, and rebirth. it makes the plants grow and the forest green. the first rain of the season is heavily celebrated in rainclan. the clan believes that medicine cats are able to tell and this is pretty true- rainclan medicine cats usually receive signs from rainclan ancestors as to when this sacred day will occur. to prepare, the clan stocks up on prey so that when it happens, cats can take off their warrior duties and celebrate with the clan. the leader will hold a certain ritual/meeting and the celebrations can begin. main celebrations happen near the turtle pond and the sky tree. this is rainclan's most major holiday/religious celebration. they also have minor celebrations on waning half moon. these days are usually used for reflection and preparation for what is to come. rainclan has certain rituals for their apprentices that other clans do not, just like the other three. of course, their training is specially suited for life in the rainforest. a common (yet dangerous) practice for rainclan apprentices is braving the snake boulder and surrounding areas.
sierraclan: arguably the most starclan-connected clan (although dustclan would fight them for that title), sierraclan, living in high altitudes without much interferance from twolegs, has the most clear vision of the night sky. they also believe they are the most connected to starclan due to their close location to the moon cavern. they have many legends and stories that they put up in constellations, in fact, they've practically deified the original four leaders of the clans and have constellations based on all four of them, plus other legendary mythological heroes and villains. moon phases are of absolute importance to them, and the even have their own form of astrology that both them and dustclan use. this "astrology" is based on the moon phases and the seasons. each cat is given a different "sign" based on the moon phase and the season they were born in. sierraclan takes it much more seriously than dustclan, believing even that some signs are luckier than others. they have many different religious customs and vigils, and they're probably the most superstitious of all the clans. all of this is not to say that they dont like to have fun though. they have many different "games" they like to play in their high-altitude territory. they can also be one of the most thrill/risk-seeking clans and many cats have tests and games they play in the more dangerous spots in their territory.

I was thinking about getting a layout for SierraClan from one of the shops on here so I can keep it in storage for a little while until I've gotten the basics of the Clan together, if that's okay? ^^
SmugGull hey!!!

Hi owlspots!
Looks like I missed out on claiming a clan but I can help with general stuff. If anyone wants a hand with lore or descriptions, just ping me.

Lore is going to be an absolute nightmare honestly I have a few ideas for SierraClan but they really need stringing together. I was thinking about having, rather than a traditional medicine cat, a more shaman healer type role where they interpret the moon and the stars (like an astrology type thing) and have items that they feel hold strong connections to certain constellations/significant individuals who are in StarClan (ie. important leaders, medicine cats and cats they held close to them) as well as herbs and stuff. They'd still function primarily as a medicine cat but if SierraClan is the most devout and most StarClan-centered Clan then I thought tailoring the medicine cat role within SierraClan a little might fit them better!
As for rituals/traditions, if they're going to place so much significance on the stars and the sky etc. then I had an idea. Part of the final stages of an apprentice's training (following their basic warrior assessment) is a controlled climb to a small plateau of sorts somewhere in the mountains behind the camp where the view of the night sky is the clearest. There is a specific herb that grows there that they must collect a small sample of and return to camp before dawn. This final test would be a measure of their strength (climbing) as well as their observation/tracking (locating the herb), and their success in the clearest view of StarClan would signify to the Clan that they are ready to become a warrior.
Maybe something we could have in each Clan is an element of the warrior assessment that is unique to each Clan?

I love that shop.
BayClan is my favorite but I'm automatically biased towards anything ocean.
How large were you thinking for the territories? Are we covering (roughly) most of Australia, or just a certain region?

SmugGull oh it's not like any "specific" area mainly because I want a character named after a Tasmanian devil AND a koala bear it's just kind of like... a general area I guess. bayclan's zone is sort of based on shark bay, while dustclan is based on agricultural/grassland areas. sierraclan is based on the vast mountainous areas obviously and Australia has quite a few rainforests so that's where i stuck rainclan haha. so kind of just this general overview of the geography/biomes of australia. except deserts.

// rolls in
same on the bias towards anything ocean lmao that's why i claimed it
also ok so for the different elements thing - what if bayclan's assessment involved swimming to the bottom of the bay to get something. or maybe 'save' a trapped warrior (who secretly is not at all trapped) and bayclan's thing is that they believe starclan controls the tides, so when the ocean/bay recedes for too long they do rituals to 'appease' starclan
also also this is completely wild and probably too 'out there', but what if bayclan somehow found a way to mix salt water with certain herbs that creates ink which stains fur, so they have 'tattoos' that have specific meaning to them based on placement, symbol, and size? this is totally wild so ofc i understand not liking it

I, personally, love all of that - between ocean plants and saltwater and ground seashells, they probably have the biggest access to pigments. (I'd also love to see what the BayClan medicine cats can do with ocean life.)
So I figure that BayClan would probably live on the top of seaside cliffs (maybe not TOO close, they probably know that rockslides are a thing) - or within the cliffs, if there's a tunnel system and some cliffside paths. It would be a very well defended camp, I think. It would also be interesting to have some kind of diving ritual - part of the warrior assessment could be leaping from the camp/clifftop into the water as a test of bravery and swimming ability.

REALLY UNIQUE + INTERESTING... I honestly don't think it's too wild I mean in canon we have like. amputation which is pretty wack already tbh at this point pretty much anything goes. but yeah I love all of that

Ahh thank you!! Additionally re - tattoos and such for BayClan: squid ink. They can use squid ink. Especially if they catch and eat things like calamari and cuttlefish. (Perhaps ink harvesting is another duty of the BayClan medicine cat?)

*trips* look I found squidpaw I'm glad! I'm really excited for this now wow. BayClan's diet would be primarily seafood based, I think - do you think they have a reef in their territory? It wouldn't surprise me at all. Maybe they have a Moonpool-esque area that's inspired by the Great Barrier Reef. (Maybe each clan can have their own "moonplace" for limited contact with StarClan and then they have one that's more central to the clans with greater importance, that the medicine cats travel to at half-moons?)

Post by ʙᴜᴍʙʟᴇʙᴇᴇ » on Apr 21, 2019 21:51:06 GMT -5
i love him - can i give him a sweet brother named sharkpaw
also i think yeah they'd have a reef - perhaps their moonpool is in a place in the cliff-side that has an opening up in the top to see the moon, and there's a giant pool in the bottom with a tunnel that connects to the bay (very short) so they swim to the moonpool?

Post by SmugGull on Apr 21, 2019 21:54:08 GMT -5
Please do I love this. I figure they're like 6 moons, new apprentices.
Ooh, yeah, I really like that. Maybe instead of drinking from the moonpool they swim in it - sort of lie down in the shallow edges and snooze to speak to StarClan.

Squidpaw would prefer you not die actually.
What were you thinking for the main conflict? You mentioned issues with the Twolegs, would that be the main plot?
