Shadow: HE’S A PRECIOUS BOY! Not gonna lie, I adore his face markings - I love those little white nose flashes on cats! And them big ol’ tufty ears. I wanted some hints towards his later appearance
I’m a little in love with his facial expressions, though.
Mint: Ah, THANK YOU! I get so excited when people think that I’ve improved. It makes me feel like I’m actually progressing! I find it SO endearing that you added this scene. In Curse it's from Shadowkit's perspective, so seeing this is like???? It hits me in the feels, because his expression ARE so good and it already shows his thoughtful personality. Unlike Shadowkit (and adult Shadow) he thinks through things and ponders them. Seeing him get inspired by the feather and getting the idea to go over to her even BEFORE he knew her is like...omg so precious. You really get to feel his kind hearted nature. THOSE EAR TUFTS ARE PERFECTION.
Scenes like this are always difficult, considering they slow down and sometimes distract from the storyline, but it's a very crucial scene, so I wanted to take the time to really show it. Scenes without words are also tricky, because so much needs to be conveyed by facial expressions alone. So, I'm really glad all the expressions came across as intended!
I'm really pleased you like the page! Getting characterisation to come through in illustration is something I've struggled with in the past, so it's fantastic to see improvement there!

I could never get that fine of detail in my art that's for sure. o.o' With lots of practice perhaps, but I'll stick to writing about it! x'D It's super inspiring to see the new panels compared to the old. Makes me want to do a side by side comparison of my writing and see the differences!! I wonder how much I've improved? ᴛᴜᴇsᴅᴀʏ *passes the tissues* Careful, Dingo. Now I want to rewrite a one shot from several years ago.
Ah, yes. Well, I think about that quite a lot. And yes, Eaglekit does change a lot - I’ve mostly worked out how he’s going to look. He’ll keep certain elements of his kit hood design (THOSE TUFTED EARS) but mostly he’ll be all new. Small parts of Shadowkit’s design will change to reflect her changing personality, but she’ll mostly remain the same.
It’ll mostly be the anatomy that changes as they grow - smaller paws, ears and eyes. I like to exaggerate the proportions while they’re young, to show age. They’ll have longer legs, of course, and longer tails. They’ll maintain all the fluff, though! |

OOOOOOOOOH, dude that's smart! It actually reflects real life too. Think of how human babies generally have bigger/exaggerated proportions! I love it. :'D
Oh yes, got to maintain the fluff. There are VERY few cats in CotV who don't have the thick fur. It's a recessive gene at this point. Further into the future though it flips once the valley becomes arid.

OH MY ******* GOD DINGO THIS IS NOT OKAY IT SHOULDn"T BE THIS GOOD *takes out inhaler* Shadowkit is SO CUTE and yet you don't make her out to be the cutest or the prettiest, it's just plain old her and it's utter perfection, like THIS IS ILLEGAL. And can we just talk about the facial expressions??!!! HOLY HELL Her looking all sad and defeated, and then the feather drops and she looks like "wtf...?" which is SO accurate. But she also looks unsure of what's about to happen. BUT THEN THAT PANEL WITH BOTH OF THEM *takes out paper bag and breathes into it* First off, you are SO good at portraying these characters so far. It makes me so damn proud and excited to see more. Shadowkit looks up not really caring at who is staring at her, and then Eaglekit has his mouth slightly open looking a bit stunned and JUST YES YES YES YES. Spoiler for those who haven't read Curse (even if you read it you might not get this right away but I think it's an obvious thing to note) EAGLE HAD A HUGE CRUSH ON SHADOW WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGER Literally I had to cut out SO many scenes of those two just hanging out because it was taking away from the pacing of the plot. RIP. And my goodness Eaglekit's smile. It's precious and it must be protected at all costs. Really amazing job dingo. The details of the moss and the feather continue to impress. The shading is on point (not too much and not too little) and the design you've chosen for Shadowkit (not using a lot of white and just making her look dark and almost muddy) is really cool to see and I'm digging it. Also her eye color and the way you make them glow a bit in the dark of the nursery is *kisses the air* lovely. |

Getting Shadowkit to look right was very important to me. Not only because she's the main character, but because she's such a powerful, emotional heroine, and I didn't want 'pretty' looks to distract from that. I had such a clear image of how I wanted her to look - and of course, doing all her inner strength justice was part of that. And UGH, I'M SO GLAD YOU LIKE HER. In the end, that's all that matters XD
And YES, facial expressions! Very important! It's part of what I love about drawing cats - you get those big hypermobile ears to play with and really exaggerate expressions. The 'wtf' expression was important (and fun!) to draw! Her trying to work out why there's a feather, of all things (and perhaps why on earth Eaglekit has bothered to approach). This interaction is crucial, considering it forms the basis of their entire relationship, so I wanted to really slow it down and convey just how much Eaglekit being there means.
As for the panel with both of them, I really wanted to convey an 'oh no, she's looking at me what do I do say something quick' expression with Eaglekit. And poor Shadowkit is very tired. She's not sure what this is, but she'll let it play out - for now, at least.
I LOVED DRAWING HIS SMILE. I think he's got a little bit of a shark smile (look at all those tiny, pointy teeth) but he's absolutely adorable.
I'm so ecstatic that you're loving this. I'm always a little nervous about posting pages, because Curse is your baby, and I want to do it justice. I'm a big fan of the glory eyes, too. It helps with the atmosphere! And I'm always glad to hear you like my shading, since it's what I think I'm the worst at O.o |

I love this so much. I remember reading the old comic on the forums and this just made my day by seeing it back on the new forums.
I can’t wait to see how they look when their older and my goodness some of the scenes from the fic in comic form would be pretty cool.
Also can I just say I love how well you’ve improved but kept to a similar style, it’s honestly amazing and the characters look better than they did, but all around it was always amazing.
Eaglekit’s also a doll and my goodness that second panel of 55 with Shadowkit was just making me ponder how something so feisty could be so adorable.

There are so many scenes that I’m excited to draw! I’m always visualising when I read the new chapters and I’ve got a lot of it planned out, and I’m so excited to share it with you all!

Eaglekit is adorable. He features pretty heavily in the next few pages, so hopefully he continues being adorable. And Shadowkit... it was a hard balance to find. I wanted to include as much of her personality as I could, and it’s always hard to make the jump to visual, so I’m really glad it’s coming through! |
