Back in 2016, I collaborated with Shadow on what was an immense project - bringing her fanfiction ‘Curse’ to life in the form of a comic. It was something I enjoyed, but life got in the way of me ever completing the comic.
Then, in the April of last year I lost my iPad.
At the beginning of 2019, I found it again, in a truly bizarre place. The rediscovery of the completed comic pages prompted much discussion over on the fanfiction forum, especially since Shadow and I still collaborate on illustrated projects. Considering many of the Curse readers expressed an interest in seeing the old pages, I have decided to reupload them... and to (maybe) add a few brand new pages to the lineup, just to see how much I’ve improved.
Of course, only the art is mine. The characters, Clans and plot line all belong to my wonderful friend Shadow, who resides mostly in the fanfiction forum. go and shower her with some love - she absolutely deserves it.

The original pages, drawn over a three month period back in 2016. I won't be writing any commentary for them, since I really can't remember anything about the process of making them. Those of you who are familiar with the source material will be able to immediately tell (I hope - this is very old art) who the characters are. Everything will be revealed in time, though, so don't worry if you never read the fanfiction!
As before, scenes taking place in the Realm of the Dead will be coloured in greyscale, while flashback scenes have a ‘desaturation’ effect applied to them. Scenes taking place in present day are just normal.

 Well, I hope you all survived the horrible anatomy and frightful backgrounds of the original pages! The below pages - a continuation of Chapter Two - were drawn at the start of 2019, using the same art program with the same tools. Hopefully there is a considerable amount of improvement! I hope you all enjoy the return of this little project, and please don't forget to go and give Shadow some love <3
The first page of 2019 introduces Eaglekit! It also features improved anatomy - like correctly shaped heads - and actual shading! I did my best to match the shading and colours with the previous pages, so hopefully it came out ok! I'm pretty pleased with the expressions on this page <3
Shadowkit makes a friend! And I never want to draw moss again.
Had to draw this three times before I was satisfied, but here you go! Eaglekit continues to be adorable. And very proud of himself.

It's insane to see the improvement! Yes, the anatomy has improved, but also your backgrounds, your lighting, your composition...EVERYTHING. And what's even crazier is that you haven't lost your unique style! You've only improved upon it and made it even more unique. I feel like if I saw your work somewhere without your name on it I'd instantly know it was you. It's that iconic!! And you still have such a wonderful skill with character design. I remember you talking about how you liked Shadowhunter to be skinny and malnourished looking to give her that more ancient vibe, and it totally works even now! oh my god little eagle ;-; |

Oh wow, that's really encouraging to hear! Ah, reading that made me so happy!
And I love character design, so hearing that I'm good at it makes me so ridiculously pleased.
Oh, I'd forgotten that discussion! I'm glad to see it still works, nearly 3 (I think) years later. It's kind of crazy XD

Shadow: HE’S A PRECIOUS BOY! Not gonna lie, I adore his face markings - I love those little white nose flashes on cats! And them big ol’ tufty ears. I wanted some hints towards his later appearance
I’m a little in love with his facial expressions, though.

I’m enjoying these nighttime tones!
Now, ordinarily, Shadowkit’s expression is just 75% eyes due to her mask markings, but the colour overlay to create the night effect means I can see all the lines on her face. Most exciting.
Also I like drawing glowing eyes.

In Curse it's from Shadowkit's perspective, so seeing this is like???? It hits me in the feels, because his expression ARE so good and it already shows his thoughtful personality. Unlike Shadowkit (and adult Shadow) he thinks through things and ponders them. Seeing him get inspired by the feather and getting the idea to go over to her even BEFORE he knew her is like...omg so precious. You really get to feel his kind hearted nature. THOSE EAR TUFTS ARE PERFECTION. |
