Marshpaw had never thought the flow of the water could be used tactically. More often than not he just struggled to stay afloat in the waters back home, fighting the currents. He couldn’t imagine making it his ally. Still, if Brinetail was able to do it… Marshpaw glanced down at the water below his chin. Learning to hold his breath for longer would be helpful in any case. Even if he never grew as skilled, if would certainly be useful. Taking in a deep breath, he plunged below the surface before Puddlepaw could. He forced himself to sink lower, until the very tips of his ears were submerged. Paws scrabbling against the sticky mud below, Marshpaw tried finding a surface he could push back up against if the need came. He squinted, then shut his eyes against the stinging water as bubbles rose from his nose. Puddlepaw, not wanting to be outdone, pushed away the pain in his tail and took a deep breath. He lowered himself in the water, trying his best to feel the currents the way his grandfather could. He was never much of a patient cat, so this particular lesson was hard. He wanted to lash out around him to feel, but he knew he would get scolded for it. He focused as best as he could, until he could feel the current tugging his fur. He noticed a slight slowness in the current, signaling something was in the water. He lashed his paw out, only to release bubbles with a curse as his paw struck a nearby stone. He came back up for air with a hiss, looking around to see if Marshpaw had come up too. (ahhh this whole time I thought you hadn’t replied!) Marshpaw came up for air a second after Puddlepaw, but hadn’t had much luck understanding the currents. He had felt the river bob, but as far as knowing what was its natural flow and what was other cats… he shook his head, and taking in another breath, dove back under the water. He willed himself to go still, and this time really focused on the push and pull against his whiskers. He thought he felt it then, a slight shifting in current different from the wider waves. Marshpaw came back up, blinking against the sting in his eyes.

Brinetail watched with a hint of amusement, though his eyes were rich with contentment. It really was delicious, watching them move with so much desperation and determination just to please him. To gain his approval. He would never tire of such a powerful feeling. He grinned toothily.
“I can see you both are starting to feel it. Of course, it will take many, many tries to truly start mastering it, but you can practice this while awake, in any stream or section of the river. Again, both of you.”
Puddlepaw took a few deep breaths, before he held it and dove back under, focusing on where he had seen Marshpaw come up for air.

Scarletpaw looked at the approaching she-cat. Her first instinct was to bristle and sink her claws into this clearly maniacal she-cat. But, she reminded herself what she was here for. If she was going to get information about the cats who tormented Hollowpaw and the rest of Thunderclan, she would have to play along. Scarletpaw narrowed her eyes and gave a smirk. “Of course I have what it takes! It’s not my fault that it took forever to get in. I know exactly where I am, and you can make me stronger, right?” She asked. Rosethorn finished her examination of Scarletpaw and stopped just in front of the apprentice, "Hmm, are you sure about that?" She asked, her striking yellow eyes boring into her. Rosethorn could see the determination and ambition in this young one, as well as the untapped potential, but there was something underneath the surface that she wasn't sure about just yet. Perhaps Scarletpaw needed a push in the right direction, and Rosethorn knew just what that push would be. "I mean, I can certainly make you stronger, but how can I be sure that you actually do have what it takes to understand and make use of what it is I have to offer you?" She asked, turning away as if she wasn't all that impressed with her inspection of Scarletpaw. "Can you somehow prove to me that you'll be worth my time? I have plenty of options for me to choose from your clanmates. Perhaps one of your brothers would make for an excellent apprentice, Dawnpaw has certainly shown a lot of promise lately. A lot more than you or Tigerpaw, that's for sure."

Scarletpaw scowled deeply at that, teeth gritting lightly. As much as she wanted to protect her brothers from these cats, she hated being compared to Dawnpaw, or anyone at all. Eyes narrowing, she growled. “Please. You think Dawnpaw’s ever going to willingly come here? He’s a goody-goody. And Tigerpaw’s been shaky as a leaf since Shadeclaw got his claws on him. I’m the one who’s been wanting to come here. To learn. I won’t waste my opportunity now that I finally got here.” Her tail lashed.
“Let me show you that I’m just the cat you want.” She lifted her chin, allowing her confidence to take charge.

Rosethorn turned her gaze back onto Scarletpaw, watching her for a long moment before the warrior gave a conceding nod, "Very well then. I'll give you a chance, but keep in mind that I do have my ways of getting even the most kind and well-intentioned cats to listen to me. If this arrangement doesn't work out for me, I'll set my sights on a better prospective." She decided, standing up with a leisurely stretch. Rosethorn narrowed her eyes on Scarletpaw before she lunged at the apprentice, swiping a large paw at her shoulders to bowl her over. "If you want to prove to me your worth, then I expect that you will defend yourself from my attacks. Be careful though, I just might kill you if you fail to impress me." She snarled, baring her teeth as she spoke and starting to circle around Scarletpaw again as she prepared for her next attack.

Scarletpaw hissed at the powerful strike, feeling herself be bowled over. She knew she had to take this seriously, so she allowed herself to roll fully over until she could leap back onto her paws. Lowering into a defensive stance, she trained her green eyes on the other she-cat. Rosethorn’s claws stung, yet it was her threat to target others that made Scarletpaw blaze with determination. She needed to survive this, if she was to truly help her Clan, and she refuses to die now.
She focused her raw anger into her mind and body as she gave a fierce snap. “I won’t go down so easily!” She lunged towards the dark cat, claws extended as she swiped for Rosethorn’s side.

That’s what makes it fun, dear.” She said with a dark purr, her eyes glinting with the thrill she felt when she teased the young apprentice. It appeared that angering Scarletpaw was just as easy as she had thought it would be. Growing serious again, Rosethorn crouched down and bunched her muscles before she launched herself at Scarletpaw, her front paws aiming to pin the apprentice’s shoulders to the ground.

This time, Scarletpaw was ready. There was no way she was going to allow herself the chance to get pinned, or the fight would be over before it started. She ducked low and shot to the left, darting to the side to put space between herself and Rosethorn. She narrowed her eyes, aiming a sharp bite right at Rosethorn’s tail.

Rosethorn snarled when she felt Scarletpaw's sharp teeth bite down on her tail and quickly twisted around, slashing a large paw at the apprentice's face and muzzle with her claws extended. The large she-cat grinned, "Well, look at that. I guess you really do have some fire in you after all." She said with a low growl, pulling herself up to her full size and lashing out with both her front paws, aiming heavy blows at Scarletpaw. "But you won't get very far with predictable moves like that."

"But you won't get very far with predictable moves like that." Scarletpaw bit her lip as sharp claws scored across her muzzle. Ugh. She'd have to make some excuse when she woke up as to why she had that. Thorns would do, for now. She focused back on the fight, growling as she put her effort into avoiding as many blows as she could. It was hard, seeing how strong and quick Rosethorn was. Her words sparked an idea in Scarletpaw's mind though, as she thought of the way her mother would train. Vixenrose was often seen as a gentle and social cat, yet Scarletpaw knew her mother was a very tricky fighter. She wasn't afraid to use dirty tactics to get an advantage, as her size and strength were not as impressive as most of her Clanmates. But, Vixenrose was adamant that to protect the cats you loved, you sometimes had to fight dirty. After all, it was Vixenrose who had hid the Clan's kits in the camp walls when the rouges invaded camp, and Vixenrose who had blocked the hole in the wall and shoved thorns and her claws into the eyes of the rouges who tried to get in. It was the deed that had earned her her Warrior name all those moons ago, a story that was heavily known in the Clan. Scarletpaw focused on her mother's words, before she narrowed her eyes. I guess I'll be unpredictable then.Scarletpaw leaped backwards, before she sank her paw into the inky black dirt and dust beneath her paws. She flung her paw upwards, aiming the debris at Rosethorn's eyes and muzzle to try and momentarily blind her.

Rosethorn growled when the dirt hit her eyes and gave a sharp shake of her head, blinking her eyes rapidly to try and clear her eyes. She knew her moment of distraction would cost her, but Rosethorn had to had it to the ThunderClan apprentice for actually trying to fight dirty. "I guess there's hope for you yet, but I still think you can do better than that." Rosethorn conceded, wanting to see how far Scarletpaw was willing to go to prove herself.

What do I need to do to prove that I want to be here?”

Rosethorn sat down and rubbed a paw across her eyes to clear the dirt out of them, finally managing to blink open her eyes and look at Scarletpaw. "Fine, you want to prove yourself? I need to know that you'll be willing to do what it takes to get what you want, even if it means betraying the ones you love and care about. You're own clanmates. Think you can do something like that?" She challenged, her eyes glinting as she stared Scarletpaw down. Rosethorn had never been one to trust another cat so quickly, so she wanted to make sure that this apprentice was the real deal here. "I want information. Anything you can get me on Lightningstar and ThunderClan, and if I deem it valuable I'll consider taking you on as my apprentice."

Scarletpaw hid her wave of relief as Rosethorn seemed content to stop the fight. She stood up, looking at Rosethorn with as best of a neutral look as she could. She hated the idea of ever giving these dark cats anything about her Clan, yet she knew that this was far preferred than getting herself torn up fighting to prove her dedication. She needed to play it up, and act like she didn’t care about anything but herself. “Information? Yeah, I can do that. Lightningstar’s become as frail as a leaf these days, and it’s made Thunderclan seem like a total pushover. I’m tired of being seen as weak. If it means getting the respect I deserve, I’ll tell you anything you want. My mentor hardly has an eye on me anyway, so sneaking in for a listen will be easy.” She smirked.

Rosethorn watched Scarletpaw intensely for a moment before giving a small nod, "Good, you have two days to gather as much information as you can." She said, giving a lash of her tail. It was a short deadline, but she wanted to see how dedicated Scarletpaw was to this mission. "Remember, if I don't find what you bring me to be valuable, I won't hesitate to kill you and move on to the next cat who can bring me what it is that I need." Rosethorn warned.

Scarletpaw pushed down her nerves, reminding herself that she needed to look and sound as resolved as possible. She had two days, and a pass to further her goal. She could do this, if she focused hard and got Rosethorn information that was critical, yet also could be defended if she told her here in the Clan. Ghostscreech would help in that regard, but she had to lay low these next two days. “Done deal. I’ll even tell you, Lightningstar plans to go to Windclan and Riverclan to tell them about what happened to Yarrowcloud. He’s been running himself ragged, looks about as strong as a newborn kit.” She started, hoping that would be a good morsel for Rosethorn for now.

Rosethorn's ear flicked in interest but wasn't all too impressed with the information, having already been aware of Lightningstar's mission to warn the other Clans. But if he was really running himself ragged like the apprentice said, that means that a change of leadership in ThunderClan might be coming sooner than the others had thought. "Hm, it's a start, but we'll see what else you have to offer in two days time. I'll even give you bonus points if you can manage to get me information on some of the other Clans as well, but don't be too worried if you can't." She said, giving a flick of her tail.

She did feel a twinge of frustration that she wouldn’t be called to training as intently as Dawnpaw always was. Even so, she focused more on her promise to Ghostscreech. She wouldn’t mess this up. Closing her eyes, she tried to will herself awake.

Rosethorn watched as Scarletpaw's form slowly disappeared in front of her, a small smile playing on her lips as she thought about all of the possibilities and uses this apprentice could offer to her. She was curious to see what information Scarletpaw would be able to bring to her after two days. Let's just hope that it isn't anything that I already know. She thought to herself, standing up and padding away from the clearing.

Your mentor, who did you receive?” She questioned.

"It is," Viperpaw said egerly, yet calmly, "And Lilith is my mentor, she was a recent rouge if I'm correct, she had me practice hunting and jumping, I caught a sparrow and a mouse," Suddenly a sharp sent pricked her nose, Another cat? Or just an odd sent in this foggy place? even if it wasn't anything, Viperpaw knew better then to let her guard down, she tensed, ready for an attack, even in her first time here, she could tell BlackBird loved the element of suprise, if BlackBird had another cat stalking Viperpaw at this moment she needed to be ready, and if it was nothing, well- She half hoped it wasn't nothing, if it was someone, she could practice battle moves again, even if she was horrible and probally would lose, she wouldn't give up without somewhat of a fight.

Blackbird didn't see Rotflesh yet, yet his scent was unmistakable. Even so, she did not betray her knowing with anything, her face remaining calm and inquisitive for Viperpaw. If anything, she was amused to see if Rotflesh could provide Viperpaw a good test by ambushing her. If Viperpaw caught on to his trick and fought back well enough, Blackbird would move in to assist her. She didn't want to lose this apprentice, not so soon after catching her in her web. She humored. "Lilith. So Spiritstar thinks you'll relate well to a cat who was once a loner like yourself. There are worse cats to get, weaker cats. She'll teach you well enough. And I'll teach you even more."

"Yes," Viperpaw agreed, "I want to learn as much as possible, and become a well-known fighter. I will admit I am not the best in battle, as I showed you before I have already put much thought into my starting stance, but I havn't gotten many chances to think about battle moves, of course I know the basic swipe, rolling to dodge, etc.. but I don't now much more," Viperpaw paused, the sent in the air was certainly stronger then before, and it did have the tint of cat in it, but BlackBird gave no hint in her voice that there was another cat, "Thanks to my mother she only thought it was important to hunt," she said bitterly, "She said, 'Fighting you can run away from, hunger is inescapable' hah, I think thanks to her little phrase there, she died, my mother said many odd things, another one was, 'if you've eaten in the past twelve days, your not starving.' She was definetly an odd one."
