Kellen was sitting outside the cabin on the back porch, plucking the strings of his guitar as he tried to figure out just the right notes for a song he was working. It was a long process that required a lot of patience, and he had pretty much zoned out all else as he worked. After figuring out the first couple chords, he stuck his guitar pick in his mouth and grabbed his notepad and pen so he could write down the first part of the song. Then, he went back to playing different notes as he tackled the chorus.
Alyssa was terribly bored. She had been sitting in her room all day reading, but finally couldn't take it anymore. Bursting out of the room she shared with some of the others, she waltzed into the living room of the cabin. "Anyone want to go into town and go shopping or something?" She asked, leaning against the doorframe as she crossed her arms over her chest. "We could even grab takeout while we're there." She added, hoping that would tempt someone to join her. Yes, going into town was dangerous for the Flock, but she got bored just staying in the cabin all day long.

With a dramatic sigh, Alyssa flopped down onto a chair and swung her legs around so they were hanging over one of the arms. If only she had gotten to go into town with Luke and Autumn. Turning her head towards Sunny, she replied, "Alright, a game it is. What'd you have in mind?" She asked, grabbing a nearby pillow and touching one of it's tassels with the tips of her fingers, entertaining herself as she watched tiny ice crystals begin to form and work their way up the tassel.

Mira chuckled, pushing herself to her feet beside Nova. "You know, sometimes you really remind me of my sister," she said suddenly, smile still there. "Maddy was kind and optimistic like you are, and so... touchy." She opened and closed her hands a few times as though this would explain her line of thought, chuckling helplessly at her own lack of words. Nova got up and put a hand on her hip, "I am offended yet I am glad to be complimeted!" She smiled brightly, "I know I can never be Maddy but if you ever need anything, I am here and would be glad to talk about anything. You can schedule an appointement from 10 through 11 am. I may need a week in advance for your appointement though." She joked and then nudged Mira softly with her shoulder. |

“Fine with me,” Alyssa replied, before slipping out of the chair and heading back into their room. Making a beeline for the closet, she opened the door and began ruffling through the top shelf. The Flock had a few board games, but nothing that they hadn’t played a thousand times. Grabbing the deck of cards that she saw wedged in between the game of life and monopoly, she brought them back into the living room and sat down next to Sunny. Suddenly, an idea popped in her head for a game she thought might be much more fun. “Ooh! I know! What if we play truth or dare? But with cards! It will be super fun. We could say if you draw a red card you have to tell a truth and if you draw a black card you have to do a dare or something!” She exclaimed, the excitement clear in her eyes.

"Well, if those are your office hours, I may as well just not bother," Mira replied flippantly, but a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She pushed herself away from the tree she was leaning on, heading back toward the cabin. She cracked open the front door, catching the tail end of Alyssa's excited words about playing truth of dare. "What's this? Are you playing a game?" she asked, casting Nova a curious glance before turning back to Sunny and Alyssa.
Sunny tilting her head. "Hmm, I guess that could be fun!" she replied with a smile. As Mira and Nova returned, she sat up a little straighter. "Mira! Nova! Come play cards with us," she greeted, waving the two over. "It's more fun with more people, right?"

”yep! Truth or dare? You in? Or are you too chicken?” Alyssa teases, winking at Mira, who though didn’t typically enjoy games, didn’t seem like the type of person to back down from a challenge. “Let me go see if Kellen wants to join.” She said, before disappearing down the hall to go grab Kellen from the back porch. Two minutes later, she returned with a skeptical Kellen, who seemed unsure about the idea of the game.
“So how is this going to work exactly?” Kellen asked, letting his eyes linger on Mira for a moment before claiming a spot against the wall.
Alyssa took a moment to re explain the game as she shuffled the cards. Looking around the room, she smiled widely, “So, who wants to go first?”

Mira rolled her eyes at the challenge, but moved to sit against the wall with Kellen, silently consenting to play the game. Alyssa was right, she wasn't one to back down from a challenge, and Sunny seemed excited to play, so her hands were tied. "I have no idea," she replied to Kellen, shrugging her shoulders.
Sunny raised a hand. "Oh! I'll go first!" she replied, excited. She reached for the deck and pulled a card from the middle, holding it close to her face for a cheap moment of dramatic tension before revealing it to the rest of the room. "Black! That means dare, right? Um, do I have to do the dare, or do I dare someone else?"

Kellen gave Mira a small smile as she sat next to him, and he couldn’t help but notice the small spark he felt when her shoulder brushed his. “This should be interesting,” he murmured to her softly in his low voice, before turning his attention back to the other flock members.
Alyssa smiled deviously as she watched Sunny draw a black card. “That means you get to be pick someone to date!” She replied, wiggling her eyebrows at the younger girl. “Then it’ll be their turn next.”

Mira snorted softly in amusement. "Hm, we'll see," she replied, obviously not super excited to be playing, but also unwilling to back down now that Alyssa had challenged her. She watched as Sunny picked the first card, wondering who she could dare, and what kind of dare an eight-year-old girl could think up.
"Okay, uh, I dare... Kellen!" Sunny announced, pointing at her chosen victim dramatically. "I dare Kellen to sing part of his favorite song." Sunny was no stranger to singing for people, often having a song in her head ready to sing whenever she was doing some menial task. Specifically, she liked to sing while she cleaned.

Kellen clenched his jaw as Sunny pointed at him, and tried to refrain from glancing at Mira from the corner of his eye. He didn't typically sing in front of large groups of people. Normally he chose to sing by himself or maybe for one other person, but not ever in front of everyone. Glancing over at Alyssa, he raised a single eyebrow, "I'm guessing there's no skips, yeah?"
Alyssa rolled her eyes dramatically and shook her head, "No you imbecile. Besides, we all know you like to sing so you might as well get it over with," She added with a pointed look.
Shifting his weight, Kellen leaned forward a bit, clasping his hands over his knees as he began to sing the chorus of one of the songs he was working on. His voice was on the deeper side, and had a raspy quality to it. Once he finished, he cleared his throat then leaned back. "Alright, so it's my turn next?" He asked quickly, wanting to change the subject.

Chuckling at Sunny's smug face, Kellen took a card from the young girl and glanced at it. "Truth," he said, holding it up for everyone to see the red card. "Alright, let's go with...Mira," He paused, looking over the smaller girl next to him. "If you could go anywhere where would you go and why?" He asked, before putting his card back in the deck and leaning against the wall waiting for her to answer.
Alyssa couldn't help but smirk as she watched Kellen interact with Mira. It was clear the older boy had a thing for their leader. He practically had "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" written all over his face every time he looked at her. Too bad the loser was too scared to actually do anything about it.

"Chicago..." Kellen repeated under his breath. The city was probably hundreds of miles from here, but it was definitely possible to make it there in a day or two. Maybe he could somehow make it happen. He was about to suggest a road trip--or flight trip--when Alyssa interjected.
"Oooh I bet they have great musicals there! Oooh!!! What if we saw Chicago while in Chicago?!" She exclaimed in excitement. It had always been her dream to see a real Broadway show. And while Chicago was no New York, it was at least bigger than Westwood.

"Oh come on, it's just a dumb idea," Mira waved off, glancing away. She knew there was no way they could actually go to such a big city. Traveling such a long distance was out of the question in her mind, not to mention all the dangers it brought. That many people meant the chances of being discovered went up ten-fold. There was a reason she'd chosen such a secluded spot to make her home, after all. "We all know why we can't do something like that, right?"
Sunny deflated at the swift change in mood, Mira's pessimistic words quickly stifling the excitement in the air. She glanced down, falling silent. "Is it really impossible for us to do things like that?" she asked softly. "I mean, isn't that what normal families do? Go on trips to visit places they want to see? There's gotta be some way."

Shifting so he was facing Mira, Kellen shifted his gaze from her to Sunny. "I mean, surely there's some way we could figure out how to do a trip, right?" He asked, keeping his voice low in an attempt to keep Sunny and Alyssa's hopes up too much. "We'd have to be careful, and plan it out really carefully, but I'm sure we could figure it out."
Practically beaming, Alyssa shot up and tackled Kellen in a hug, "Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!" She exclaimed, half screaming, before running to her room to go pack her bags.
Realizing what he had just done, Kellen winced, "Hey I didn't say yes for sure! And it's not ultimately up to me, you know!" He called after her, but it didn't seem to do any good. It was true though, the decision wasn't his to make. He may be older than Mira, but she was the one who started this flock, and he ultimately deferred to her judgement. Gently putting his hand on hers, he tried to speak to her in her mind, but he wasn't sure if it would work.
Sorry about that...what do you think? Is it too dangerous? He asked her, using his telepathy so they could continue the conversation in private.

"Alyssa_!" Mira called after her, but it was already too late. She sighed heavily, leaning back against the wall. She was trying to find a way to break the news to Alyssa that it was indeed impossible when she felt Kellen suddenly touch her hand. She jumped, both at the touch and at the sound of his voice distinctively in her mind, and almost broke the connection in the process. Christ, I'll never get used to that, she thought before she could stop herself. She quickly rerouted, returning back to the problem at hand. I don't know... like you said, it would take a lot of planning, and we'd all have to be extra careful not to get caught. This isn't a question of "do we go or don't we", something like this could be potentially disasterous. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't even consider it.
Sunny was dumbfounded as Alyssa suddenly shot out of the room, not sure what she should do. She glanced over at Mira and Kellen, then back to the bedroom, and eventually decided to chase after Alyssa and see what she was up to. She poked her head into the bedroom. "Alyssa?" she called.

Giving her an apologetic smile, he thought, Sorry... before continuing on. And I totally get all that. But what if we could pull this off? Just as one fun...family...trip? It was weird for him to use that word, but he supposed Sunny was right. They were like a family. I think it could mean a lot to the kids. Plus, you'd have Luke and me to protect everyone. And they aren't exactly helpless on their own. He added with a chuckle. I think it could be good for the Flock. I get we need to stay under the radar, but what good does being free do if we can't actually be free? He asked, hoping he wasn't crossing the line.
Meanwhile, Alyssa was humming the tune to a song from Chicago while she began rifling through her devestatingly small closet. "Ohh we can do so much shopping while in Chicago!" She said excitedly to herself before hearing Sunny say her name. "Want to help me pack?" She asked as she momentarily turned around to look at the younger girl.

Mira fell silent, considering this. It was true that being cooped up in the cabin wasn't her favorite thing, and she'd much rather be out exploring than bored in here, but that didn't change the fact that the risks involved, in her mind, outweighed the possible goods. She sighed softly. I'll think about it, she conceded at last. I'll see if I can figure something out, and I'll talk to you and Luke about it soon. I just... don't want anything bad to happen.
Sunny walked funny into the room, closing the door behind her. "Um, I know you're excited to get out and go somewhere, but I don't know if Mira's on board yet," she replied, moving over to a spot on the floor that she'd set aside for herself. "It might be a little early to be getting excited."

Nova silently listened to the conversation while sipping her luke-warm soup. Her hands wrapped around her bowl of soup. When the topic came up of Chicago, Nova raised her eyebrows and her eyes went wide, "Oh no, that's not safe whatsoever," She set down her now empty bowl. Alyssa was already packing but with a single command of her voice, she could make the other stop, "Going to Chicago is such a risk, we simply cannot take it," She looked back to where Alyssa's room was located and thenh looked at Mira, 'You know I can tell her to stop, I still have some power over her.."

Kellen couldn't deny that he was disappointed when their connection was interrupted--the telepathic talking seemed to work better with Mira than anyone else he had met--but he should have expected it. In a small cabin with so many people living in it, it was hard to have a moment truly be private. He listened to Nova interject and discuss the possibility of the trip with Mira, chosing to stay out of it for the most part. He had put in his two cents, so he wouldn't push the issue. He trusted Mira to make the best decision for the Flock. And he would support her no matter what. Once she got up, he did the same, but stopped to clean up the pile of cards Alyssa had left scattered on the floor in her excitement to go pack for a trip that probably wouldn't even happen. Nova was right, it probably was too dangerous.
With a huff, Alyssa turned around. "I just hate being cooped up here though! I get that Mira is the boss or whatever but the rest of us want to have lives too. Why can't we have at least some sense of normalcy?" She asked, frustrated. But the rant was more for herself than for Sunny. More than anything, Alyssa wanted to travel and experience the world. Heck, she had wings that would make it easy--and cheap!--to travel. Sometimes she felt as if she was just as trapped here as she was at the school. Of course, they didn't get experimented on here, but they also hardly got to live like normal teens.
