The demon had been forced out of the woods and into the city. She was harder to track here, she hoped, though without a contract, she couldn't change shape or use any other means of magic. What little she had leftover from her last contract was fading quickly. It hadn't given her much, unfortunately, because the contractee hadn't survived long.
The hunters had found them so quickly after the contract was forged. She hadn't even had a day to teach the woman to defend herself before the hunters had caught up and cut her down. That had been maybe a week and a half ago. She'd fled that city and tried to lose them in the woods. It hadn't gone as planned.
Without magic left over, she wouldn't be able to hold this form much longer. The first part of her disguise to slip was her eyes. They'd turned from gentle pale irises to brilliant red orbs, blocking any sight of the white or pupil. She had to correct this quickly, or she'd be stranded out here in her true form. If that were to happen, it was over. It wouldn't be just the hunters tracking her down.
For now, she hunkered down behind a dumpster in the alley between a cheap restaurant and some sort of law firm. She needed to catch her breath. The hunters had to be at least a few hours behind her, especially now that she didn't leave an obvious trail of broken branches and undergrowth behind her. She could afford, she hoped, to take a few moments to try and clear her head. She wouldn't get much farther without a plan or strategy.

Mirabella sighed as the doctor led her out of the room, murmuring apologetically to her. She knew that he was only being nice, but she had heard the same condolences every day for the past two years. Her sister was terminally ill and had been for quite some time. Mirabella knew that her time was coming to end but still fought tooth and nail to pay for the best surgeons and every treatment they suggested. She was eighteen, parentless, and now she was going to lose her only remaining family.
The girl shook off the 'reassuring' hand the doctor had placed on her shoulder and fled from the quarter. Within moments she had left the hospital completely and sped off in her car. There was a cheap restaurant not too far away from the hospital and the bartender never carded her. Her sister remained numb from pain by medicine, Mirabella used to other methods to stay numb.
She parked her car in the alley behind the restaurant, slamming the door shut despite the fact that there was no one there to witness. Profanities slipped from her lips as she climbed the back stairs of the restaurant. She stopped right in front of the door, sliding down to her knees, unable to even make her way inside. That's when Mirabella heard a rustle, perhaps it was imagined, either way she still figured it was better to be safe then sorry.
"Who's there?"

The demon spotted the car lights and had remained very still to keep from avoiding attention, though in her exhaustion, she'd let her foot slide the pavement. The colors of her hair and skin were fading quickly, and the paleness made her easier to see with all the city lights illuminating the night. Upon being called out, she stopped to consider this... The slam of the car door and the reek of disinfectant.
There was potential here. Perhaps she could make this work.
Do not show weakness. Do not show how badly you need this.
The demon stood and straightened herself briefly before stepping into view. She paused, uncertain of the best way to introduce herself. Before the silence lasted too long, she began to speak. "Perhaps this might seem an odd place for introductions, but I am Valkoinen, a being of opportunity. You'll find it quite beneficial, I believe, to converse with me for a bit."

Mirabella hadn't expected an answer at all, especially not an introduction that included someone calling themselves a 'being of opportunity'. She didn't move from her hunched position on the doorstep but did manage to look up at the exceptionally pale woman. Valkoinen? Is that Russian? She didn't have time to ask before the stranger encouraged her to talk for a bit longer.
"I'll find it beneficial? You're the one that clearly hit the glass too hard tonight." Obviously, the woman had been drinking a little too much inside and had wandered outside only to find that she was far too wasted to do anything. That was the reasonable assumption. Besides, no person in their right mind would refer to themselves as 'a being' or speak in such a formal manner. Valkoinen didn't seem much older than Mirabella, thought he girl found it hard to place any sort of age on the woman.
"I'm going to call you a cab - what's your address?"

The demon's expression blanked briefly as she tried to rethink this as quickly as she could. She needed to make it clear she had what the girl wanted, but since she wasn't certain exactly what that was just yet, she needed to tread carefully. Maybe a more direct approach?
After barely a moment, the woman spoke. "I have not hit any glasses, as you say, but I do address you. Did you come here from the hospital to drink? Surely if you were just released, alcohol might be a little strong for you." Though her eyes were fixed on the woman in front of her, her ears were straining to listen for the sound of anyone approaching. Even if it wasn't the hunters, any interruption could be enough that the girl rejected her proposal and she was left again in a pinch.

Mirabella laughed dryly, perfectly aware that the woman most likely had no idea why she was laughing in the first place. "I wasn't just released, so there's no problem with that." She paused for a moment, struggling to speak the words she needed to explain her situation. "My sister-" her voice broke, and Mira took yet another second before trying again. "My sister is in the hospital. Pediatrics to be specific, she's thirteen. I was just visiting."
Mirabella stiffened slightly and watched the woman through narrowed green eyes. There was something wrong.. Mirabella had no recollection of mentioning the hospital to Valkoinen. She never mentioned it to anyone. Only the bartender was aware of her situation, and that was because he was the one she cried to when it got late in the evening. Of course Mirabella never remembered any of it, but waking up to mascara and tear-stained sheets and catching a sorry glance from the bartender the next day was indication enough.
She said nothing though, figuring that it was best to hear the woman out. Those details could be dealt with later.

Ah, there was her answer. The sister. The hesitation, the falter in her voice. She had her bait, but she needed a hook now. She'd never been very good at this part.
"Perhaps just visiting would be an understatement? It is not just disinfectant that I smell on you. Medicine. Stress. Usually when I come across siblings with such an age gap, they tend to be distant from each other." The demon mused out loud. She stopped, realizing she must have moved too quickly or overlooked something when she caught the shift in the girl's body language. She was suspicious? Would it be best to come outright and say it?
"What has your sister in the hospital?" She asked.

Mirabella finally stood up, wiping the corners of her eyes as she adjusted her stance. "Stage four lung cancer," she answered blandly, the words sounding foreign on her tongue. Mira usually danced around the phrase, trying to avoid the topic all together. She only ever heard it from the doctors or her death-accepting sister. "But I don't understand how that is at all relevant."
Boldly, Mirabella crossed the distance to stand right in front of the woman, sizing her up with crossed arms. "What is it that you want?" Clearly, Valkoinen wanted something from her. Otherwise she would have stopped prying long ago.

Something of a twisted smile crossed the demon's face when she heard the ailment. It wasn't an act of insensitivity as it might seem, but more of realization as it dawned on her exactly what kind of opportunity this was. She knew exactly what to do with this, if she could just get the contract.
"I can fix it." She said shortly, the smile still on her face. She placed a hand the lower half of her face as she let out a short, sly chuckle. "Forgive me, I do not mean to mock your misfortune, but as I said. I'm a being of opportunity. I can take her illness away." And give her horrible condition to one of those miserably persistent hunters. That should buy her a bit more time.

Mirabella had already looked rather fed up with the woman before, but after noticing her smile.. well, Mira was practically bristling. Having people feel sorry for their situation was bad enough, but then this woman had the audacity to take delight in it. "I'm sure you don't mean to mock my misfortune-" she began, spitting out the words. Mirabella quieted once more at the mention of a cure for her sister. Perhaps the woman didn't word it like that, but the intention was clear.
"You can.. you can take it away? I-I don't understand." This was a lot to process. While this was all good news, Mirabella was certain this was going to get her hopes up, only to crush them in the end. "How?"

It looked like she had her contract. She just had to not lose her on this last bit.
"Well, it is not difficult. Just a little hard to get your head around it." The demon replied. She hadn't realized how far her cover had slipped, but she started to catch on when the skin in the upper corner of her forehead began to peel and fall away, revealing white, reflective scales. "I never said I was human, nor did I say this was a real cure. The path you would walk after would not be an easy one, either."

Not human? No real cure? Who was this woman?
Mirabella had just opened her mouth to speak when the white scales caught her attention. If she hadn't already had such a weird night, she might have screamed. Instead, Mira found herself wanting to know more about the woman. "You could really cure my sister? And what do you mean by walking a hard path? What would you get out of this?"

"Ah, clever. You know nothing is without its price. I can cure your sister. I can take everything away." The demon grinned, placing a pale hand over the scales to try to slow their spread. "Thing is, I can only do what it is that I do if I have a specific arrangement with you. A contract, if you will. This contract is binding, and if it is broken, things will go back to the way they were before. I lose that which you have given me for the contract, and your sister will return to her current condition. But you must also be aware that there are people in this world who do not like what I can do. They hunt me, and others like me. This will make you a target to them, too."
Hopefully that was enough to cover everything. She had to be careful with the way contracts were. She couldn't lie, or force someone to sign it, but she could place loopholes where she needed them if she had enough time to think them over. This didn't seem to be the case here. "As for what I require from you, I seem to have fallen target to a specific group of hunters. I cannot face them as I am. If I have your loyalty, I can save your sister and my self."

Mirabella frowned, eyebrows furrowing together. She loved her sister, yes. However this wasn't typically one of the jobs you took on as the older sister - in fact, Mira was fairly sure this wasn't in the "good sister handbook". A part of her was infinitely aware that she would make the deal. It was Clara after all. Another part of her was praying that she could convince herself otherwise.
"And this deal of ours. Is there an expiration date? Or does it simply end the moment I die or you're safe?" She wasn't daft, the woman was clearly running for her life and the moment Mirabella sold her soul she would be a part of that world. "It seems like you need me a lot more than I need you."
That was a half-truth. While Valkoinen seemed desperate, she wasn't exactly pleading for her help. But if Mirabella had learned anything from years of negotiations, you never put down all your cards on the table at one time. She couldn't let on how much she needed the demoness.

So she'd been a little too transparent this time... She'd just have to be smarter about it next time. She could always try to find another contract, but this one was here in front of her, and if it just took a small adjustment to get her what she needed, she could worry about filling other contracts after.
"I do not like putting time frames on my contracts, but you have a point. I assume you will want to spend time with your sister once she recovers... Hmmm.. If a time frame is what you wish for, I'll implement one. I will permanently and irreversibly remove your sister's condition. For an added measure, I can rewrite her immune system to prevent anything like this from happening again. While you are bound to my contract, I will do what I am able to preserve your safety, and after our agreement is over, I will be on my way unless you choose to make another contract. As for this contract, it will last until the group that is following me are no longer capable of posing a threat to me. Until the contract is over, I require from you your trust and your loyalty." The demon stated, shifting her stance. With the terms of the contracts all laid out in the open, she could forge the actual physical contract here and now, if she still showed interest.

Aarow's heart almost stopped when he heard the knocks. Infinitely glad the door had been locked, he regained himself and restored his cover, not realizing he'd changed the tone of his hair ever so slightly closer to Alayah's. He got up and walked to the door, unlocking it and opening it. He hadn't really understood her through the door so he gave an apologetic look. "Sorry... What did you say?" He asked, a little uncertain if she'd mind repeating herself. Alayah smiled when Aarow opened the door, though was briefly concerned when she heard the lock click. "Oh, I just said that dinner was ready." She told him, beginning to turn towards the stairs and glancing back to see if he had followed. (Sorry this is short I haven't had much time.)

(It's alright. I'm just glad you've returned.)
Aarow nodded, stepping out of his room and closing the door behind him. He walked just behind her, though he was careful to not actually get close to her. He was still very cautious of her. Again, she seemed nice, but he wasn't sure how much of his first impression he could trust.
