As soon as fresh grass starts to peak out from the melting snow, the clan coordinates an ambush to reclaim their lost territory. They hit fast and hard, overwhelming the HollyClan dawn border patrol and their meager reinforcements. The clan's fury was fueled by the harships of Leafbare. The most aggressive fight was between Featherfall and HollyClan's deputy. Both walk away alive but worse for wear. The clan return home victorious although many bear new scars.

Drizzlestrike and Bravescar have began to spar often in an effort to be named best fighter in the clan. Though they enthusiastically encourage older warriors to join them, no one can compete with their determination and friendly but intense rivalry. Slyfern and Orangepetal are supportive in a begrudging way but Sweetfire has begun taking bets around the clan on who will come out on top.

Cherrykit and Mothkit are excited to become apprentices - maybe a little too excited in their mother's opinion. As the bets continue and more of the clan are sparring and enjoying the challenge, they often beg their uncle Stonesong or the younger warriors to teach them moves. Even with three queens and Falcontooth to watch them, they are often flinging themselves across camp trying to copy the warriors. Drizzlestrike and Bravescar's rivalry hits them again as both want to be their mentors.

The next full moon arrives and the gathering goes smoothly. There seemed to be hostilities between IvyClan and MintClan but nothing that involved them. It was apprentices' first gathering so they were excited and eagerly introduced themselves to the other apprentices but during the mingling, Cherrypaw notices that her mentor took a walk around the gathering place with the HollyClan deputy. She tries to ask about it, but Featherfall brushes it off as trying to clarify the border situation after their battle.

Jadestar worries for Falcontooth’s health as the tom is older. The Nursery Helper promises he’ll retire once the next set of kits are born, hoping the queens’s births will go well. There is an almost melancholy silence in regards to the fact that he may be unable to train an apprentice fully or that no kit will be interested in his job at all.

The apprentices were out hunting with their mentors when they spot a MintClan and IvyClan battle from across the river. This was their first actual experience seeing violence and both watched in rare silence. When one IvyClan tom was thrown into the water, Featherfall and Spiderfoot had to help him back on dry land. It ended with a decisive win for MintClan. While Mothpaw was excited about witnessing it all, Cherrypaw noticed the subtle nod Featherfall gave to the MintClan deputy before they left.

Jadestar loses another life from this stomach problem, his brother Rubyfeather also dies some days later after complaining of the same issue.

Seeing Jadestar's condition only worsen with time, Flameflash observes the kits closely, desperate for one to take an interest to herbs or StarClan. When he overhears Adderkit tell her siblings about some strange dreams she's having, he immediately tries to persuade her into becoming his apprentice. Although they were all still several moons too young to begin training, he hoped that she would agree to train a bit younger if she showed promise. Cloudshine, Honeycomb, Sunrise, and even old Falcontooth are a bit bothered by this and wonder why he couldn't just wait until their kits decided for themselves.

Adderkit is baffled and hostile to Flameflash’s behavior. The young she-kit glares often at the medicine cat when he’s not looking. She feels insulted that he would dare to think she wouldn’t want to be a warrior, likely because she was the youngest of her litter, thus weaker than her brothers.

Jadestar grows too weak to leave his den and loses another life in the following days which only intensified Flameflash's worry. Featherfall has taken up a lot of responsibility in the clan, even stepping up for their leader during the next gathering. When Cherrypaw sees her mentor speaking to Stonesong about him setting up patrols, almost as if he already named him deputy, she was a little taken aback and thought it was a little disrespectful as Jadestar was still alive and lucid, just sick. Cherrypaw and Featherfall had grown distant during this period due to his business, leaving her training mostly up to Spiderfoot.

While sick, Jadestar has enough energy to be able to speak when he calls Sunrise, Glacier, and Cloudshine to his den. He wishes to discuss mentors with the she-cats, with worry over Drizzlestrike and Bravescar’s rivalry stirring while he was ill, which would create further stress on himself and the parents of the two litters. Ideally, he’d like to apprentice all five at the same time due to being close in age but wants their opinion.

Cloudshine says that Sparrowkit was really close with Falcontooth but also said he wanted to be trained by someone "big and strong" in his words so his path may not be for certain. Sunrise joked that if their rivalry must be acknowledged, then let Drizzlestrike and Bravescar train their laziest kits so that maybe their energy levels would even out. But the most serious of them all was Honeycomb, who demanded that Adderkit be made a warrior apprentice. She was the most upset by Flameflash's constant hounding and how it was making Adderkit act up.
What they didn't know was that Sharpkit had seen his sister's distress and wanted to be a good brother. He wanted to request to be a medicine cat instead, so just sister could do whatever she wanted. He wasn't particularly interested in herblore or interpreting dreams but he already had his heart set on helping his littermates.

To the Clan’s surprise, Jadestar is well enough to conduct the apprentice ceremony. The Clan and the children’s parents are further confused when Sharpkit announces he would like to be a medicine cat apprentice, a surprise that delights Flameflash. Both Drizzlestrike and Bravescar are excited to finally have apprentices each, receiving Mistlepaw and Moonpaw respectively. Sparrowpaw is given to Glacier and Adderpaw is given to Orangepetal.
