As the days go by, it is more evident that whoever the intruders were, there were more than one of them, proven by the unburied carcases of squirrels and birds. Their kills were still sloppy, making the good hunters in the clan scoff at their bad form. Further examining the tracks found that they were young, probably apprentice age. Drizzlestrike complains that maybe they should just go and find them and tell them off as it didn't seem like they were dangerous, just hungry and clueless of clan customs.

Featherfall disagrees vehemently with Drizzlestrike, telling him that these young cats needed to be wary of their surroundings. He tells Drizzlestrike and the rest of the patrol that they're heading home to explain the situation to Jadestar. Surely the leader will agree with his deputy and not the young warrior.

One late night, a patrol of Fireglow, Stonesong, Honeycomb, and Streamleap finally catch one intruder. It was a young tom, barely 6 moons, who was chewing on an old squirrel before realizing he was found and bolting. He was easy to catch and he was apologetic but still outspoken when he was cornered. They bring him to camp to have Jadestar and Featherfall deal with him but Fireglow notices he looks familiar in a way but cant really explain why.

After much discussion and arguing with the outspoken tom. It is eventually decided that he will be an apprentice. However there is further discussion to be had on mentor with Jadestar conflicted on giving him to one of the former rogues or a Clan cat to help him better adjust. The silver leader also acknowledges that Brave will likely be a difficult apprentice with how our-spoken he is.

Many thought someone more strict like Featherfall, Stonesong, or Stardust would be good to straighten out the unruly apprentice. Brave had tried and failed to get out of camp on his own three times now, not understanding why everyone was being so strict when he had survived on his own for a moon now. Fireglow was growing more annoyed with the young tom and he still couldn't shake the feeling like his face was familiar. Waterblossom seems to think the same and she has tried asking Brave about his life before but the tom gave very vague responses. Fireglow decided to give up and go for a hunt alone when he was "ambushed" by two similarly-aged yet familiar-faced cats who demanded to know where they took their brother. With a bit of exasperated explanation, the siblings were reunited and join the clan officially.

The new “apprentices,” prove to be as unruly as their brother, with Sweet probably being the worst. Quick to argue with the large and imposing white she-cat while Sly is more content on simply not listening to whatever Stardust is trying to tell him or sneaking off to do his own thing.

Though they don't act like it, the three apprentices were actually taking their lessons to heart. Their hunting was the biggest improvement, now able to make clean kills and know better to bury their prey. Talking back to their mentors aside, they seem to actually appreciate joining the clan especially now that the first snows have arrived. One could only hope they mellowed out with age though as Sweet has convinced her brothers to start pranking the younger warriors, much to Drizzlestrike's chagrin.

During a prank that Sweet had organized, Rootwhisker and Streamleap both wake up with thorns in their pelts. Both are given treatment in the medicine cat den.
The two young warriors are upset as they have every right to be. Rootwhisker, being the more angrier of the two, goes to Glacier and asks for Sweet, Brave, and Sly to be punished. Whether that be cleaning the elder's den for a moon, she wants the new apprentices to understand the consequences of their actions.
Glacier is unsure, so they go to Featherfall and Jadestar for advice.

Jadestar and Featherfall suggest leaving them stuck with just elder duties for the moon and though Jadestar is amused more then anything Featherfall agrees that the three should have a change of pace in training and wants to discuss it with their mentors, realizing that separating the three only made them act up worse so perhaps group training would be better. While Sweet, Brave, and Sly start changing the elders' bedding, the aging Tigerflower mistakes Sly for Lightfire thanks to their shared features in pelt color and eyes. The other elders begin recognizing the similarities to Lightfire and Emerald, two who left the clan during the war for the lake lands. Sweet grew uncomfortable and stalked off but Brave and to a lesser extent Sly were eager to listen to the elder's stories. It was here that Waterblossom and Fireglow pieced it together - the three were their kin.

With this new found information, the apprentices behavior notes of improves. Sweet still argues with Glacier and Brave can also be troublesome for Stonesong on occasion with impulsivity. But the three apprentices are more respectful overall and are seen spending time with their older siblings when the Clan is more relaxed.

As the season gets colder and the snows get heavier, the younger members of the clan find themselves struggling a bit. When out on a hunting patrol, Rootwhisker gets her tail caught on some fallen rocks and she is burried under the snow for a few hours. The search party led by a frantic Tendrilfur finds her nearly frozen to death. She is alive though half of her tail has gone limp and she develops a heavy fever.

Rootwhisker is incoherent when awake in her fever haze, tossing and turning in her nest often enough to leave the medicine cat’s den incredibly messy. And it is not the first time that Flameflash has had to hunt for missing herbs that had become lost due to the scattering of moss in the two days since her rescue.

One of his his herb gathering trips, Flameflash watches as a HollyClan cat chases a squirrel past the border and up a tree, only to leap back over to their side after catching it. He goes to confront them about it but he is met with the rest of their hunting patrol who all but threaten him to leave. He goes back to the clan disturbed and immidiately informed Jadestar and Featherfall.

The theft of prey is a problem and Jadestar sets out to bolster patrols on HollyClan’s border. Falcontooth also volunteers to go out with the medicine cats as the Clan does not have any kits and their healers may need protection against a potential patrol. One day, HollyClan set out to push into AppleClan's borders, sending a patrol to try and overwhelm hunters near the border. In a misguided attempt to help their brother, the three apprentices sneak off into HollyClan territory and steal some herbs. Another hunting patrol consisting of Waterblossom, Spiderfoot, Orangepetal, and Drizzlestrike is attacked, far deeper into HollyClan’s territory, led by their current deputy.
“Steal our herbs, we’ll at least make sure it’s put to good use!” The HollyClan deputy hisses shortly before the hunting patrol is attacked. The wounds suffered by the hunting patrol are heavy as the patrol leader, Waterblossom, chooses for the cats to flee.
While cowardly in the eyes of HollyClan, their decision is the correct one as the AppleClan patrol scramble and flee, some wounded heavily.

In an attempt to strengthen their border defenses, Jadestar leads dedicated border patrols to stop any more surprise attacks from happening. It is a good plan and prevented further pushing into their territory however as a result of the lack of herbs, Jadestar's wounds grow infected and he loses a life after one of the skirmishes. Fireglow has also failed to recover and passes away the same day.

There is a lull between battles but the clan is on edge after losing lives so soon. One chilly day, Streamleap's hunting patrol finds the body of a dead deer. Some call it a bad omen but eating from the carcass might be a good idea as it is not only herbs going scarce but fresh prey as well. Jadestar asks Rubyfeather and Flameflash if it would be a good idea to feed on it, just in case the deer might be diseased.

Desperate for fresh-kill, the deer is accepted and recovered back to camp. Weeks later however, illness characterized by vomiting, diarrhea and a high fever has swept the clan, likely brought upon by the dubious prey. With several warriors at a time incapacitated, patrol schedules slow to a crawl. The sickness proves particularly unmerciful to the clan's more senior members, with Reedspring sadly succumbing to its effects and passing.

The sickness causes the clan to lose control of its border and HollyClan has taken advantage of their weakness to extend their scent markers. Although they would like to reclaim it, Jadestar and Featherfall know that acting too soon while the clan was still recovering would likely lead to even more losses. There is one boost to the clan's morale however as Emberblaze announces she is expecting kits and moves into the long empty nursery.

The Clan slowly recovers, even if sudden mourning strikes them. Not by the death of any cat but by the sudden retirement of both Opalflame and Rubyfeather. Jadestar’s siblings are too weakened by the illness and Rubyfeather deems it is better for the Clan’s morale for an early retirement instead of sudden deaths on the Clan’s paws.
Instead of moving straight into the elder’s den as that would require an expansion, Jadestar offers his nest to his siblings, choosing to sleep with his fellow warriors instead.

When the next gathering happens, Jadestar refuses to buy into HollyClan's taunts and reports business as usual. However, there is clear animosity between the cats attending. Sly, the only one of his siblings present, threw enough insults that a HollyClan apprentice tried to attack him only for them to be hauled off by their mentors and scolded. The gathering ends soon after and there is clear desire from the clan to want to reclaim their land now that the snows were easing up.
