Jadegleam does not take on his new position well. He is stressed at the sudden promotion and the desertations. He considers himself unfit for the position but he can't bring neither Hawkstar nor Pearsong to their senses. His siblings and his mother try to help him but he fears the worst: perhaps there would be no clan left to lead. That night, Blaze, Rocky, and Honeycomb abandon the clan as well.

A rather tense day is erupted by the sounds of thunder. All at once, the cats of AppleClan are pelted by rain. Some are joyous by the site, not having seen the plentiful water since the drought had begun. Others like Glacier and Stonesong are more concerned with being pelted by rain. A patrol is set out to find better shelter while the medicine cats work madly in hopes the water doesn’t ruin what herbs remain in their storage.
Falcontooth, Reedspring, and Waterblossom set out to collect the rain water instead, supposing that collections of water would help overall morale.

Stardust pulls Pearsong aside. "Your rains are here. The other clans have yet to reach the lake. Your plan can still work." Pearsong is angry that he could even say such a thing. "My clan is falling apart. We do not have our home back. I've failed. None of my plans worked. You should take the rest of the rogues still loyal to you and leave. I'm cursed." Yet Stardust promises to stay. "I promised to help you get your home back. I'm staying until then."
Though the two were awkward, Pearsong would be lying if she said she didn't enjoy his company. They were both struggling commanders and they bonded oved their recent failures. Slowly, the former deputy adjusted to life without sight. Because of this, she chooses to come out of retirement to help the water collectors in the meantime.

After a few days, the rains have briefly halted but the dark clouds in the sky tell of more rain to come. Rowandusk and Rubyfeather take this time to see what herbs have not been fully drenched within the lake territory. It is during this excursion that they find the IvyClan medicine cat, who has luckily evaded any AppleClan patrols.
Thistlestem mentions that the IvyClan leader has decided AppleClan has been punished severely enough for failing to mention the lake territory to the other Clans. And that IvyClan will no longer be an enemy to AppleClan. The she-cat blinks sympathetically before sharing her own worries, “That AppleClan should get rid of those weird collars. Our deputy has mentioned she could easily persuade some of the Clan into attacking if she sees any more of those murderers.” Rowandusk merely nods her head taking in the information that while IvyClan will no longer be a problem, HollyClan and MintClan certainly would be.
Rubyfeather asks if this means IvyClan will no longer use AppleClan’s land, in which the medicine cat assures him that IvyClan will likely leave the lands to MintClan and HollyClan.

"Stardust and the other rouges have been extremely helpful in reclaiming some of our territory," Pearsong says. "They're staying." Meanwhile, Honeycomb returns with two more rouge helpers.

Havefire speaks with Hawkstar, Jadegleam, the medicine cats, Stardust, Pounce, and the other senior warriors. The elder explains that they overreacted poorly.
“It is not the cats IvyClan’s deputy has a problem with but the collars. Get rid of the collars and we have one less Clan at our pelts. It’s as simple as that.”
Stardust takes this into account, the rogue does mention it is difficult to remove the spiked collars due to how easily the wearer can be injured in the process. Pearsong mentions they can find some way to remove it without injuring him.
“Maybe honey?” Flameflash suggests.
Pounce leaves during the discussion, not wishing to remove her collar.

“If it calms IvyClan we may have little choice but to remove it. The last thing we need is another Clan at our pelts especially if they’re willing to stop attacking now that the rains have come. All we have to do is get rid of a small detail.” Pinenose mentions.

AppleClan does not have the numbers to match three Clans, especially with the rains bringing all four Clans back to full strength.

Stardust was tempted to leave the clan before speaking privately with Pearsong about the issue. "My collar is all I have of my past - who I was before all this. I wish the best for AppleClan though so I do not wish you to cause any more harm. I plan to leave, like I said, when you have returned home and this war is over. I will stay out of sight until then, if IvyClan stands strong about the matter." The two then work closely with Jadegleam to start planning for their return.

It was easy to see why Pearsong was insistent on getting the rogues to stay; she had grown fond of Stardust and having him leave so soon would leave her troubled again. However, it was clear when Thistlestem replies that it was simply against the nature of the clan. IvyClan were always traditionalists and it was not the first time they questioned AppleClan's habit of freely accepting outsiders. Though she had stepped down as deputy, the she-cat still loved her clan and she understood that if she wanted it to continue standing, she had to let go of her love for Stardust. When she returned to plan with Jadegleam and Stardust, they all agreed that he would stay in the lake camp to guard if anything ever went wrong. Hawkstar was no longer part of the planning process. Hearing about Pearsong’s troubles, Rowandusk and Rubyfeather go to Pearsong’s aid: the elder medicine cat explains to Pearsong that Thistlestem had specifically mentioned the IvyClan deputy could likely persuade her Clan into further attacks due to keeping “murderers,” within the Clan.
Rubyfeather mentions that he remembers the IvyClan deputy comes from a kittypet background so cats with spiked collars were likely fearsome. So prior bad history experienced by the IvyClan deputy mixed with IvyClan’s typical traditional values was likely some bad mix.

In the next attempt at retaking their home land, their plans went smoother than they expected. With IvyClan fleeing at the sight of them and MintClan and HollyClan taking advantage of the rains, only two other patrols were there in AppleClan land. Stardust and Pounce were absent from the raids as agreeds upon, despite being a bit annoyed by it. Though Tendrilfur loses an ear, they manage to extend their borders inward. The next big step would be to retake their camp.

Pearsong is perturbed by Stardust’s earlier words as the tom had agreed it would be better to stay out of sight not try and force IvyClan to change their ways. They were in no place to even begin to do that, when she attempts to confront Stardust. Pounce angrily mentions that she should be trying to fight for them after all Stardust had done, not listening to IvyClan. The large she-cat is evidently uncaring that AppleClan would acquire more losses if the anger IvyClan.

Jadegleam is particularly worried about the upcoming battle. Like the rest of the clan, he knew Hawkstar was on his last life. If the old tom died before they could reclaim their home, would MintClan and HollyClan be kind enough to allow him passage to get his 9 lives? He was doubtful he was even deserving of them seeing as he looked often to Pearsong and Stardust as more experienced leaders. And even still, he overhears a few of the younger cats as well as the rogues wonder why all the leadership positions seems to swing around the same family: Hawkstar's daughter Pearsong and his grandson Jadegleam, even 2 of his siblings as medicine cats. Would he ever step out of the very tall shadow his kin have made?

Flameflash, while out gathering herbs, brings home news one day that he spots MintClan's river flooding. The rains don't seem to be stopping anytime soon and the tom suggests that they use it as cover to swoop in and get their home back. MintClan wouldn't dare cross the rushing river, leaving only HollyClan their biggest threat. Jadegleam agrees and plans that half of the clan go and retake the camp from possible stragglers. Stardust promises the rogues would protect the noncombatants in their makeshift camp while the rest of the clan prepares themselves for another fight - and another chance to return home.

Despite the insistence of Tigerflower and Pollenfeather, Hawkstar stubbornly stays in their makeshift camp by the lake. "It was my fault that we ended up here. I am staying until we can all return, not just some." Rubyfeather tries one last push to get his grandfather but gives up, taking Waterblossom and Sunrise as protectors while they veer closer to the HollyClan border to assess what had happened to the herb patches in their absence. Sunrise manages to spot a few HollyClan hunters failing to catch anything in the bad weather. Thankfully the rains hid their scents, allowing the three of them safe passage back to their camp.

Cloudshine, Shadefern, Spider, and Dazzle try to make their way to the camp but they are spotted by a HollyClan patrol. Not wanting to alert them of the rest of the clan's move, the four of them scatter. Shadefern and Dazzle end up regrouping and reaching the camp unscathed while Cloudshine and Spider distract the HollyClanners by pretending to retreat and circling back to take one of them down. Only after their fight do the two realize they had in fact knocked out the HollyClan deputy who was barely clinging to life. Unsure of what to do, they drag their body to the HollyClan border and flee back to report to Jadegleam what they had done.

Jadegleam is shocked, mentioning that the HollyClan deputy should be returned to HollyClan territory. The last thing they need is for HollyClan to attack because their deputy has been kidnapped. Cloudshine and Spider then attempt to return the HollyClan deputy to where they were knocked out before they awaken. Rowandusk even gives the warrior a poppy seed to ensure a hopefully peaceful journey instead of further fighting.

More and more of the clan return to camp, even Jadegleam who takes charge in rebuilding the dens and trying to refresh the borders while they still had the cover of the rains. Though nearly all of the AppleClanners have returned, Hawkstar still refuses to leave the lake. The old tom has grown weak and delirious, saying that he still had to wait for Dashfoot, Plumwhisker, Emerald, and other clanmates who either perished in the war or left the clan. Stardust and the remaining rogues warn that the rising floodwaters were growing more concerning each day. Pearsong and Rubyfeather desperately try to get him to leave with them but it was clear - Hawkstar was dying. In his last moments, he wills his daughter to leave him. "The curse I put upon the clan ends with me. Go and help Jadegleam lead. I must wait here." It was Stardust that pried Pearsong away from his side and the remaining cats flee before the flood overtook them. AppleClan had their home back, now without their old leader.

Having to trek through other clans to receive his lives is dangerous but thankfully any IvyClanners who spot them, noting the medicine cats, put enough distance between them that it was no issue. It was HollyClan that gave them the most trouble, one aggressive patrol even attempting to charge and attack before the medicine cats demanded safe passage. When they return, Jadegleam was now Jadestar. The spirit of Hawkstar gives him his last life, the life of honesty, and says that generational secrets do little when the fate of all the clans in at risk. Jadestar offers Pearsong her deputy position back but the she-cat declines, saying she has served her clan long enough. Instead, Featherfall is the new deputy.

Jadestar is excited to have new kits in the clan. New life meant a new dawn, an end to the season of hostilities. He prayed to StarClan that he could keep those kits safe, them and the entire clan - and the rogues who had yet to leave. His first official act as leader though is not to give those kits their mentors but to name his mother Tigerflower as an elder. She said that warrior life didn't feel the same now that his father had died so she wished to finally rest and hopefully keep Pollenfeather company. The elderly she-cat, the eldest in the entire clan, has been silent ever since Hawkstar passed. They hoped that another cat in their den would soothe her.
