Outnumbered but unwavering, AppleClan fights until a pause in the battle happens, with all the clans realizing what this truly meant. The other three clans would stop at nothing to have access to the lake - even if it meant driving out AppleClan entirely. The patrols each retreat, leaving what remains of the AppleClan warriors to assess the losses. Fuzzwhisker had not survived, losing too much blood as the first target. Redblaze was also lost in the onslaught. Hawkstar is also badly wounded and he loses a life as they return to camp. While he recovers, Pearsong is left incharge to play defensive and protect her home.

A weakened Olivebranch also makes the report that it was MintClan who was stealing prey, which comes as unsurprising to the Clan. What is surprising is it was IvyClan who had attacked AppleClan while also stealing her s.

Pearsong had hope that they could hold off the others until the drought ended at least. They had the most familiarity with the territory and the lake. It would be easy to set up ambushes since they knew that the other clans needed to push into their land from specific angles. If they could hold them out of their land long enough, not having resources would certainly weaken their foes. She set up rotating patrols at all times, making scouts hide and wait to see of anyone was approaching.

At Rubyfeather and Rowandusk’s urging they are able to get various cats with long fur to evacuate such as Cloudshine and Dashfoot, even though the latter protests greatly to leaving the Clan.
Shadefern, Tendrilfur, and Emberpaw also choose to evacuate considering water may need to be fetched if the heat worsens.

The clan faces almost daily attacks. The rogues are a great help especially Stardust, who is a fierce fighter with a mysterious past which intrigues many in the clan. Unfortunately, there are still casualties. Plumwhisker was about to get pummeled by an enemy warrior until Olivebranch pushes him out of the way and takes the hit for him. She loses too much blood and passes away before they can reach camp.

AppleClan ultimately lose their borders with MintClan and HollyClan as both neighboring Clans push inwards and freely attack any AppleClan cats on sight. Cats from both Clans taunt AppleClan mentioning they deserve it for denying to tell the other Clans about the lake territory for so long, indicating that one of the former AppleClan cats revealed this information.

Their foes have gotten bolder since the fall of the border. In a joint attack by MintClan and HollyClan, they are pushed into the heart of the territory and attacked right in camp. Jacob, Yarrowleap, and Lunafire die in the battle. Hawkstar is attacked by the rival leaders and he loses a life. Pearsong has no choice but to call for a retreat and AppleClan is forced to abandon their camp and hide in the lake territory with the others who evacuated earlier. Treeshine and the rogues hold the line long enough for the rest of the clan to escape and the elder loses his life in his last stand.

Even with the reinforcements, morale was at an all time low. AppleClan had been effectively chased out of their own territory. Although the lake was the most fruitful land in the time of the drought, it was no replacement for their home of generations. Hawkstar is growing lethargic and found himself in constant pain. All the deaths in quick succession left his body little time to recover and the medicine cats spend dawn until dusk trying to keep him stable. The other's injuries are not faring well either. Pebblebelly got a wicked infection from a bite to the neck and is unable to even get out of her nest. Plumwhisker and Lightfire too have deep wounds and the herb stores are not well stocked enough to quash their pain. Pearsong's leadership is proving doubtful in these trying times as she stresses the exile of her clan. Stardust has been a driving force in their battleplans and many respect his tenacity but it has made the deputy begin to feel like she was second place to this stranger.

Although she feels nervous around the hulking, battle-scarred rouge, Pearsong tells him how she's started to feel like she's second place compared to him. Drawing closer to the lake territory, a hunting patrol was met by cats from IvyClan who had yet to take full action. The more healthier warriors easily beat the tired patrol, leading to the deaths of Moondream and Barknose. Even Groundshaker is killed when the sleek IvyClan deputy and some of her warriors somehow succeeds in choking him with his own collar. Rocky is left critically injured.

Pebblebelly and Hawkstar succumb to their injuries despite the new herbs but Lightfire seems to be doing better. Despite all the recent loses, AppleClan does see some good luck in the coming days. The clan manages to ambush an approaching patrol. With the assistance of the rogues, they end up outnumbering their enemies, giving AppleClan a much needed win. The returning warriors report that their foes were still thin despite the new territory which gives Pearsong hope that her initial plan to wait out the drought was working. AppleClan territory alone was not going to be enough to sustain three clans. Within time, they could strike back hard and take back their home. She just hoped that her father would be strong enough to lead the charge but, with how he was currently faring, she feared that he wouldn't be alive to see the charge at all.

The clan was doing a good job at holding the line. There were less access points so their enemies were forced to funnel into areas where ambushes could be set up. The few scouts sent to spy in AppleClan territory report that the three clans have turned to animosity as well, struggling to share the abandoned land. With that news, Pearsong and Stardust plan an intense attack in the following days. To boost morale, the deputy gives Firepaw and Waterpaw their warrior names. There is a little concern about how it wasn't the leader who did the ceremony but Hawkstar is still unconscious from his injuries.

With their leader shaken but standing, the clan was reinvigorated and ready to retake their home. After the initial rush to drive out anyone inside the territory, they planned to have 3 patrols push back on each border to reinforce that they were back. The initial rush patrol would be led by Pearsong while Stardust, Dashfoot, and Tigerflower would lead the other patrols. Though Hawkstar wanted to join the fray, they all knew he wouldn't dare well in the fight and had him manage the reinforcements instead.

The initial attack is held at dawn to surprise any early patrols. Pearsong leads Cloudshine, Featherfall, Blaze, Shadow, Fireglow, and Stonesong. They make quick work of the hunters scattered across their path and head straight for their camp while the next patrol gets ready. AppleClan camp had been converted into a rest spot it seems where patrols would rest before returning with their prey. Pearsong finds the MintClan deputy Wintershine there and the two begin fighting fiercely.

The younger deputy ends up blinding her mentor to force the battle to end and for the cats resting in AppleClan camp to flee.
“AppleClan has no right to remain after you and Hawkstar were content to have us die of thirst. Let alone the fact AppleClan has been keeping hidden territory for seasons!” The white she-cat taunts before retreating. Shadow lies heavily injured, a spike from his collar piercing into his throat. Stonefall bleeds heavily from one ear while Cloudshine has some cuts near her flank. Hopefully the other patrols were faring easier.

The other patrols retreat back to the lake territory, wounded and battered and low in morale. Shadow passes away due to his injuries, along with Hailstorm and Dashfoot. Due to being blinded, Pearsong steps down from the deputy position and joins the elders. Hawkstar doesn't see the point of appointing a new deputy. "Why should I, when we could all be killed or driven off into the hills?" he says, before retiring to his nest.

With their plan failed and leader in no shape to lead, many of the clan see no point in trying to reclaim their territory. If even Hawkstar thinks it was pointless, were they still even a clan? Former kittypets Emerald and Spikefeather are beginning to think it was best they just left clan life. Emerald tries to convince her kits Waterblossom and Fireglow to leave clan life too but they seem too attached. Spikefeather ends up leaving the clan without them to return to the twolegplace.

Surprisingly, it is Lightfire who convinces Emerald that if her kits wish to remain in the Clan, she should let them make their choice. He even offers joining her in whatever life she wishes to lead, be it in the Clan or otherwise.
The two later leave some days later followed shortly after by Meteor and Quicksand. The latter of which spats in Stardust’s face that his whole plan was worthless.
