Everyone can see that Hawkstar's age was slowly wearing down on him. When out training Waterpaw, the leader had to strain to keep up during combat practice and later couldn't keep up when she was chasing a squirrel. Waterpaw is honored to be trained by the leader but her high energy doesn't seem to work well with her mentor's more methodical approach to training.

Pollenfeather and Pearsong convince Hawkstar that he has nothing to prove to the Clan or to them, and that his wisdom is enough to be a good leader. The Clan is large and prosperous; he doesn't need to be a commander and soldier both. Their gentle care wears down his stuborness, and Hawkstar entrusts Waterpaw to Jadegleam, hoping the younger warrior can harness Waterpaw's limitless energy.

A drought sweeps the clans. Many streams have dried up completely and the river bordering AppleClan and MintClan has been reduced to just half a leg deep. The clan is kept in manageable condition thanks to their lake territory but it is clear that other clans are not faring as well as they were. The heat makes it difficult for those with longer fur to do their duties and Treeshine in particular is kept on watch for a heat stroke risk.

Redblaze pushes herself too hard on patrol and collapses in the heat. The rest of the patrol manage to rouse her and bring her to camp, but Rowandusk warns the others that this heat can kill if they aren't careful. She assigns Lightfire, Moondream, Pebblebelly and Tendrilfur to water patrol; they are exempt from patrols until the heat lets up and their only job is to ferry water from the lake to camp and make sure the queens and elders have enough to drink at all times.

The lack of fishing spots makes MintClan wander dangerously close to their borders. Several patrols have reported antsy behavior from their water-loving neighbors, warning them not to get too close to their slowly drying river. A patrol of Olivebranch, Lunafire, Featherfall, and Shadefern get into a border scuffle after a MintClan patrol accuses them of stealing fish after Shadefern wanted to drink from the river. It was broken up before anything serious could happen but Hawkstar and Pearsong fear that it would not take long for MintClan to start expanding their borders.

At the next gathering, the other clans grow suspicious of AppleClan. With their secret lake territory, most of their warriors looked alright for the most part. There were an assortment of heat related deaths announced from the other clans and IvyClan even reported finding twolegs straying into their territory. MintClan in general looked angry and desperate. Their leader announce that a portion of their river had been poisoned by twoleg trash. With a threatening look at the other leaders, he warns that the poison could be spreading into their territory. "Though it seems like old Hawkstar and his clan are blessed beyond belief, strangely. Not a whisker out of place over there in AppleClan."

During the scuffle, Pearsong is pinned down by her former apprentice and now deputy of MintClan, Wintershine. The white she-cat glares at the AppleClan warrior, who hisses quietly in her ear.
“AppleClan must tell all the Clans about the lake territory at the next gathering or I’ll do it myself. You have no right to free water while the rest of us suffer.” Pearsong kicks the MintClan deputy off of her, merely hissing in response as her brother, Plumwhisker arrives with reinforcements. This then forces Wintershine to retreat with the rest of her hunting patrol.

Hawkstar is at a loss. The lake territory has been an AppleClan secret for a few generations now and all options left them exposed. If they allow access to the other clans, it would mean their patrols going straight through AppleClan territory to get to the lake. Then they would have to continue with the other clans knowing that they had a valuable piece of land. If they didn't, they might face a war. He asks the clan for their input and faces a divide. Some such as Treeshine, Olivebranch, Pinenose, and Dashfoot say that the other clans were not entitled to the lakes at all. It was AppleClan who found it, went through the troubles of taming the land, and it would be the other clans who would reap the reward. Others like the medicine cats, the nursery helpers, and even Pearsong want to avoid conflict and just allow it just until the drought was over.
In the end, Hawkstar has an idea. Medicine cats had a different code than warriors, were often less experienced in combat and hunting, and work in the path of StarClan. When they would commune with StarClan, it was done in completely neutral grounds. If the same conditions were put in place on the lake during the drought, with only medicine cats allowed to get water and some fish, he would allow it. He tells his idea to Pearsong and hopes the other clans would understand.

Much to the chagrin of their sons, Havenfire is quick to point out Wintershine spilling information about the lake territory is not their only worry. They also had Horsetail to fear in HollyClan. While not the weakest of the Clans of the recent drought, they were generally the first to unsheathe their claws. Pollenfeather even comments worriedly that, “Even IvyClan would be willing to shed blood with such a valuable resource.”
It is a hopeful and wary sense of anxiety that enters AppleClan as they hope the medicine cats can meet with their idea before other cats reveal things too soon.

Rowandusk, Rubyfeather, and Flamepaw present Hawkstar's idea at the next halfmoon gathering. They announce that AppleClan has found territory that would benefit all the clans during the drought and it may be in the clans' best interest to share it like they share the gathering place or where they spoke with StarClan. They say that Hawkstar is asking to meet with all their leaders to find a peaceful solution. The three are told not to mention how long ago the lake was truly discovered however and they could only hope that the former AppleClanners in other clans would keep their generational secret. The other medicine cats seem wary but allow it and Hawkstar waits for the day of their meeting. Flamepaw in particular had trouble keeping his nervousness in check - he was not one to lie and this entire thing troubled him greatly.

The elderly HollyClan medicine cat grumbles that this should have been mentioned at the gathering and not Hawkstar’s polite nonsense about being blessed by StarClan. Like the HollyClan medicine cat, the other leaders and deputies seem insulted that Hawkstar waited this long to tell them. Hawkstar tries to reason with them and say that the territory was dangerous, mentioning snake, badger, and fox attacks he had heard from elder tales, but it was clear that MintClan had enough. The leader demanded that a neutral path be made through AppleClan territory to the lake and it be free hunting grounds for all. Hawkstar and Pearsong say that it was an unreasonable request but IvyClan and HollyClan agree. Threatened and outnumbered 3 to 1, Hawkstar and Pearsong are forced to allow it. They both know that no good would come from this - AppleClan would surely feel like they were thrown out of their own home but Hawkstar and Pearsong were too averse to conflict to do anything about it.

Returning to camp and giving the news that the other Clans are not to be attacked on the path to the lake is met with understandable outrage from within the Clan. Olivebranch and Plumwhisker are especially shocked at how easily their father and sister did not not seem to even try and argue against something more incredulous as this demand. Many cats traveling through their territory would scare away potential prey as well.

Unfortunately, what was done is done. The other clans sent patrols to mark out the new path facilitated by AppleClan senior warriors. They work on some compromise to avoid cutting directly through AppleClan however this makes the neutral path long and across rougher terrain. It was not long before everyone began to notice that the path was slowly shifting to be more direct to the lake, slowly encroaching on valuable hunting grounds. Tensions are incredibly high when patrols meet each other. Disputes break out when some are caught hunting on the path and not at the lake. The "peace" was fragile and everyone could sense that one wrong move and it would shatter completely.

An AppleClan hunting patrol consisting of Jadegleam, Waterpaw, Shadefern, and Barknose encounter a patrol of IvyClan and MintClan cats who are traveling along the lake pathway. The discussions between the IvyClan and MintClan patrols end up distracting prey, with neither group particularly caring at how Jadegleam glares angrily as his apprentice loses a catch. The tom is doing everything in his best interest to keep his fur on as it wouldn’t be best to antagonize at least eight cats from two different Clans.

A patrol composed of Olivebranch, Fuzzwhisker, Redblaze, Spikefeather, and Firepaw meet another patrol carrying squirrels, prey that was rare in the lake and likely caught in AppleClan land. Tempers flare, insults are thrown, and Fuzzwhisker is attacked by one of them. As soon as the first blow was struck, the rest of the patrol fights vigorously and tells Firepaw to return with reinforcements. When the apprentice arrives bearing the news, Hawkstar knew that his plan had failed and war was soon upon them.

Hawkstar leaves with Pebblebelly, Nightcloud, Redblaze, and Barknose to go and confront the patrol at the lake. While war was likely imminent, this was their current battle.
