plot;; alola is a harsh place with little rules in place to protect pokemon, and thus the death and injury toll is higher than any other region. due to the nature of their trials, the entire region is set in stone with their 'kill or be killed' policy, which shows issues to out-of-region trainers. a sinnoh champion decides to travel alola after suffering heavy losses, and along their way, they meet an alolan trainer who's life is very, very different from theirs.
revali's character;;
Jasper Grey | 30 years old | Champion of Sinnoh - currently in Alola, but hasn't lost his Champion title. there's an interim-Champion, and protocols in place if someone beats the interim (unlikely). - lost his closest partner, a seasoned Espeon, after a harsh battle that nearly cost him his title. - in Alola, he's a voice in the community who speaks up about Pokemon cruelty. this is a small group, growing larger by the day. he is not there often, however. current team: Pan is an Alolan Raichu, level 28. He knows Psychic, Thunder, Rain Dance, and Volt Switch. Soren is an Arcanine, level 35. He knows Fire Fang, Extreme Speed, Aerial Ace, and Flame Charge. Rey is a Mismagius, level 30. She knows Mystical Fire, Phantom Force, Magical Leaf, and Shadow Ball. Codi is a Midday-form Lycanroc, level 31. She knows Accelerock, Rock Throw, Bite, and Snarl. Shira is a shiny Luxray, imported from Sinnoh, level 37. He knows Thunder Fang, Hyper Beam, Wild Charge, and Protect.
deceased: Skye, Rowlet. Died at level 10 to a random trainer. She was the first casualty. Kairo, Pikipek. Died at level 13 to Totem Pokemon Raticate. Cecilia, Fomantis. Died at level 24 to Totem Pokemon Lurantis.
Jasper, himself: 5'' even is not a very tall height, but that's fine by him. People seem to find him intimidating nonetheless, as he has a fairly sturdy build - made for climbing, more than anything else. He has brown skin with faint freckles over the bridge of his small nose, and his eyes are a steely blue-grey in colour. He has a mole dotting underneath his right eye, and another at the left corner of his lips, with a few more dotting over his neck. His face is oval, and he has quite a sharp jawline - as a whole, it's not quite soft looking....rather stern, actually, due to his on-point eyebrows. A scar cuts through the center of his lower lip, another over the bridge of his nose, and two more over the left side of his jaw. His arms and hands are riddled in scars, as are his legs, and he has some particularly nasty ones over his body, too. Most of these are from dealing with violent wild Pokemon - some of them are from elsewhere, and he's not bothered about them. Tousled, somewhat wavy/curly hair is a dark brown in colour, with some blond due to remnants of an old bleach job. It's styled into an undercut and when he's training with his Pokemon, he'll push his bangs back and pin them in place with bobby pins. His general attire consists of torn black skinny-jeans and a loose white tank-top with a graphic on the front depicting some runes and a possible picture of the Sinnoh Legendaries, though they're stylised. He has a chain connecting from one of the front belt loops to the back, and he wears calf-high combat boots with steel toes, just to be on the safe side. He has a tattoo sleeve on his left arm, consisting of various flowers with various meanings. A more recent addition to the sleeve is an Espeon surrounded by those flowers, though that was done a good few months ago and has healed well. He also has a Ho-Oh feathers on his right inner wrist, and his back has a depiction of an Espeon and an Umbreon as the sun and the moon, circling each-other with black feathers behind Espeon, and purple ones behind Umbreon. His entire back tattoo is made with watercolour. This man has a fair amount of piercings; the shells of his ears are lined with hoops, he has an industrial bar in the left ear, and both lobes are pierced three times with small studs. He has a tongue piercing, and viper bites, and the bridge of his nose is pierced, too. Jasper has been raised into Pokemon breeding, and his father actually worked in the Pokemon Center at one point, tending to wounded Pokemon. He was taught how to bandage up wounded Pokemon and this has become an asset to him now that he's skilled at it. He's fairly good at judging when his Pokemon are at their limit, and thus knows when to swap them out. Admittedly, he makes mistakes - he's still dealing with a heavy loss, and even more losses along his way. He's very tired. Keenly intelligent and observant, he's someone who knows how to handle situations - but he's an impulsive, stubborn man who tends to come off as aggressive due to his monotonous tone of voice and lack of varying facial expressions. Honestly, people in the Sinnoh region used to dislike him due to his 'emotionless' demeanour - but he's more emotional than people know, and he doesn't enjoy letting it out.

i love your char aaaaa time to make mine, haha also: moonbat, the best bat, the only bat
current info on the alolan boy, wip
florence king ; 27 ; alolan trainer -rebuilding from having his team nearly wiped out by the totem pokemon salazzle in the third trial -started a bit late on his journey bc he had to help his family at their local inn -understands the pokemon language pretty well except for the more specialized dialects
team: daphne is a mudsdale, level 36. she knows high horsepower, double kick, stomp, and iron defense. ( + earthquake ) tempest is a talonflame, level 35. he knows quick attack, flame charge, peck, and roost. ( + acrobatics, tailwind ) beryl is a ribombee, level 31. he knows pollen puff, draining kiss, psychic, and stun spore. ( + dazzling gleam ) camelia is a vaporeon, level 32. she knows quick attack, water pulse, aurora beam, and rain dance. plush is a stufful, level 20. he knows brutal swing, flail, tackle, and baby-doll eyes.
deceased: chirp, pikipek. died at level 8 to a random trainer. amethyst, alolan meowth. died at level 14 to totem pokemon raticate. felix, torracat. died at level 26 to totem pokemon salazzle. plume, oricorio. died at level 27 to totem pokemon salazzle. may, morelull. died at level 25 to totem pokemon salazzle. bec, lycanroc (day form). died at level 26 to totem pokemon salazzle.
notes: 5'5", slightly darkened skin, hair dyed a light pink, slightly curly hazel eyes, a cheerful lil grin usually on his face dresses light but packs a jacket or two for cold nights, mostly tank tops with patterns or pokemon on them, shorts, and good walkin shoes has a few tattoos, but nothing else- mostly some native flowers on his left arm and stars in the pattern commonly recognized by alolans as lunala looking down over the region
a cheerful guy, pretty unconcerned about the deaths of his pokemon or any wounds other than daphne, who was his first pokemon- the family pokemon, really, their mudbray, obtained before he even got his litten. finally going on his journey after his little sister was able to start helping their family's inn, and enjoying it quite a bit. knows quite a bit of the general pokemon language, more than the usual alolan- he can't say anything much in it besides the moves of any of his pokemon that can't understand enough english to recognize their moves in battle. i'd say there's more to him atm but i'm better developing stuff in rp lol

okay!! i'm gonna do that, then ^^ i'll be around to talk from time to time, though, nbd. oh! it's likely illegal in alterity, and ngl, i like the restriction, kind of? it makes fights a little fairer, but lbr, illegal moves would be used in alola nonetheless. the four moves listed are the moves recorded by the pokemon center, imo.

ayy man, alolan life d: jasper might've started using illegal moves in desperate situations, but otherwise he avoids them as much as he can. he wants to try playing by his own league rules.

There were few things more devastating than losing a Pokemon, but at this point in his life, he wondered if anything would best it. Every day, even months after the incident, he still felt the sharp sting of her death as if he had an infected wound, as if he was seeing her death replayed to him over and over. Technically, he was. It had not been pretty - it had been brutal and entirely against the Pokemon League ruling, and as such, he'd defaulted as the winner - but at what cost?
He had been only eleven years old when he'd met Vui, and barely thirty when she'd died. Nearly twenty years together - they'd grown up together, had explored Kanto and Johto, had bested the Hoenn region but had denied the title to go to their home turf to take the Champion title, to Sinnoh. At one point, they'd even been to Unova, and even Kalos. Every region accessible to them, they'd explores. Just weeks before Vui's death, they'd made plans to visit Alola, to experience the wilderness firsthand, to see the damage that was being done. If she had still been here, it would've been a Champion's errand. As it was, he'd decided to go back to basics to try out exploring the region for himself.
If he was being entirely honest with himself, Jasper Grey hated Alola. It was a gorgeous place, the people were kind and welcoming, the food was good, the entertainment even better - but he had an issue with one thing.
The way of battling. In Alola, there were no laws in place to protect the wild Pokemon. He'd seen more than his fair share of severely injured wilds, too timid to come near. He'd found bodies (had buried them, to give them some sort of funeral), and had managed to convince some trainers to allow him to treat their Pokemon. Nowadays, he carried a medical supply kit in his shoulder bag. Someone had jokingly referred to him as a traveling Nurse Joy, had inquired if he was part of the Joy family - but that was not it. In this region, medical training for Pokemon seemed even rarer than in other regions - and that was a rarity, in itself. If he could save just one Pokemon, he was...happy. Some of the younger trainers on previous islands had already started coming to him, had asked for his number so that they could ask for advice if their Pokemon were hurt and they weren't near a Pokemon Center. A small step in helping these Pokemon, he had thought, and briefly, he'd been proud.
But battling always carried risks, and that was why there was a thrill. The devotion and sheer loyalty of a Pokemon at his side, the wildness of a battle that carried little of the clumsiness of actual wild battles, but all of the grace of the movesets provided to them. The Sinnoh League had become known for their ability to make their battles much like Contest battles; they were highly televised around the world. While the Indigo League had the spotlight for being the first League to settle the laws, the Sinnoh League was showy. It was what he loved about it - to be able to coordinate with his Pokemon.
He'd decided to stop that, now. What was the point in being a show-off if his Pokemon died in the process? Vui had been a miscalculation on his behalf, it was his fault, his fault, his fault. It repeated in his head more often than his original starter's death. At least Nikos had achieved his life goal of becoming an Empoleon - Vui hadn't had the chance to complete her life goal of traveling the world. After Alola, he was sure there would've been more regions, he was sure there would've been anything else. As it was, Vui would never be able to see the world again. He didn't think about what happened to Pokemon after deaths - only thought about the weight of it, hoped that they were happy...he had known that his partner wasn't happy. He should've stopped it, should've left the Champion position to travel with her without fear of her death, but he'd been so attached to the goddamn position. Even now, he refused to stand down. If he was called, he'd fly back to Sinnoh immediately to fight a challenger who beat his interim. As it was, the Elite Four had strengthened their team to protect the League, their loyalty seemingly only for Jasper, nobody else. It was a nice thought, at least.
But onto the present.
Akala Island was a nice island, in his opinion. The volcano had been fun to explore (he had a female Salandit in the PC Box, she'd been too aggressive to use immediately) - Lush Jungle had been interesting. He had gotten the hang of the 'fighting to the death' thing, and the Alolan Pokemon that he carried with him had started to grow closer to him. Hell, their English had even been getting better with the help of Shira, who...he had to admit, had become something like his new partner.
"We should get in before the storm starts," the Luxray mused softly, his head angled towards the sky. The two, walking back from the Grass Trial, had been silent up until this point. Another grave was left behind, but at least she'd been in a place she loved. The little Fomantis had been feisty, her battling had been amazing - but in the end, she wasn't strong enough, and Jasper had known that. It had been a split second decision; sacrifice her, or let Soren die. He'd chosen to sacrifice her. "There's an electrical current in the air."
"Yeah," Jasper flicked his gaze upwards and squinted. The swirling clouds were dark, and the wind had picked up. "Is there anything around? Any Pokemon hiding in places?"
Shira moved his gaze around, his keen eyes glowing faintly. It was always interesting to watch how a Luxray interacted with the world - he'd had one, before. Not the same golden colour as his current partner, but she'd been the same, in other ways. Noble and wise, sensitive to the world. He enjoyed Shira's presence as much as he'd enjoyed hers.
"There's an empty cave. I just saw...a Yungoos, I think, leaving it. We can take it over."
He gestured for the Pokemon to lead the way, and he did. They had to push through the undergrowth to get to it, but there it stood - a rocky cave, covered with moss and clearly dug out by some kind of Pokemon - probably Dugtrio. When they entered, however, it was empty. Some rocks stood in a circle in the middle, but there had not been a fire here for a long, long time. There were no telltale scorch marks, and grass was beginning to grow. Whoever had used this place before had not come back, and for that, he was grateful.
"Take Pan and bring some...branches, maybe. Twigs. Something flammable that can keep fire," he told Shira, before releasing Pan from his Pokeball.
For a moment, Pan looked baffled - but then again, he often looked baffled. Even now, he wasn't quite used to a Pokeball, and so going in at one point and emerging at another was still an experience he didn't understand. Jasper listened as Shira repeated the instructions to the Raichu, and the two left the cave to go do that. Jasper crouched down and pulled his sleeping bag out of his shoulder bag, laid it out near the to-be-fire pit, and sat cross-legged, taking his boots off and crossing his legs. After a moment of thought, he brought out Soren.
"You chose...my life. Over hers," was the first thing he said, his ears flattening briefly. "Why?" even now, his accent was an interesting thing. Soren, however, had learned English rapidly due to where he'd lived before.
"I didn't want to choose," he began carefully, listening to the idle chatter of his other two Pokemon outside. He didn't understand it, but it was pretty to listen to. "But it was you or her, and you've...you've been loyal, even though you never had to be. She could've been something amazing, but you are something amazing."
Soren digested this for a moment, his eyes narrowed as if he were furrowing a brow, or something like that. He was an elegant beast, Jasper had to admit. Though it was not like Alolan forms of Pokemon, there was something more sleek and slender about him, shorter fur compared to their Kanto and Johto counterparts. They were neater and, if he had to be honest, much larger.
"Thank you," he murmured eventually, laying down near (but not on) his trainer's sleeping bag. It was a beginning to trust, Jasper hoped - something that showed that Soren was willing to work with him. The others only ever listened to Shira, which meant that the Luxray had to be out for battles solely to give commands. It was a little tiring, but he wanted it to work.
"You don't need to thank me."
A flick of the ear showed that he'd been heard, but there was no response. The two sat in a comfortable silence until the others returned, many twigs and sticks and even a small branch in Shira's mouth, and some logs floating around Pan. It was an amusing sight, but he only gestured to the firepit. Some of the logs were set in a circle, and some of the twigs and sticks were set in the middle. After a heavy sigh, Soren exhaled and a fire was lit. It was warm and comfortable, and outside, Jasper could see the beginning of the rain. Some thunder rumbled above head, too, and Pan looked...excited. It was cute. As it was, however, he had to return the Raichu to his Pokeball; there was too high a risk. Despite his cute bafflement and fluffy looks, if another person happened to come by and enter, he'd be the first one to attack. Instead, he allowed Codi out of her Pokeball.
"Warm," she said softly, settling by the fire. As a Rock type, it was unlikely that she'd bother to leave the cave while it was raining. She hated the rain.
The three Pokemon were arranged near the fire but semi-close to Jasper; Shira was the closest, actually resting on the sleeping bag. Codi maintained some distance, kept an eye on Jasper and perked her ears whenever he moved or shifted his weight. After a few moments, he pulled a book out of his bag and smiled at her as she raised her head with some interest, watched as she shuffled closer.
"What story?" she whispered, eyes widened.
"The Ugly Ducklett," he replied, looking down, at the illustrated pages. "I don't want to ruin the book."
Realising what he meant, Codi hesitated. She stared between the other two Pokemon, before reluctantly crawling over, settling in a position nearer to Jasper than he expected she intended. Slowly, he adjusted his hold on the book to allow her to see, and began to read. He knew that the others were listening, too - and he only wished that the others could listen, but as it was, they were just too aggressive. These three knew how to be passive, and...gaining Soren's and Codi's trust, it was his priority, at the moment. These three were the backbone of his team. He'd begun to love them so dearly, as if they were his regular team.
Once the story was over, he realised that the Lycanroc at his side had begun to doze, her body shifted onto its side and her head resting against his leg. He didn't move, and instead chose to read another story for the benefit of the other two. It was a nice activity; it got the Pokemon used to his voice, and...he liked to think it built up trust. He remembered years of reading with Vui, had enjoyed when she'd begun to read over his shoulder as her literacy increased. Maybe he'd see if Codi was interested in becoming literate, to see if she wanted to be able to read on her own. It was an interesting thought, and it would help him spend more time with her.
It was scary to know how much he doted on his team, even if only one of them shared the sentiment. He would do anything to keep them safe, even if it meant actively killing other Pokemon - and he hated that that was the case.

Sometimes, Florence wondered if he should be more concerned about the fact that his whole team had nearly died a month or two ago in the third trial he had faced.
Hm.
He had come from something approaching simple origins. Pokemon were just always the daily topic of conversation as trainers and others- but mostly the trainers- came in and out of the family inn, chatting about what had happened to them. As a young child, he had bounced on the edges of conversations- of stories too exciting for him to handle, eating up stories of how nearly all of a trainer's team had fainted and they had still pushed through to win a fight. How exciting was that? Trainers from other regions got all upset, cried when his family was impressed- why? It wasn't like it was anything particularly upsetting. Even young, they all knew what happened. It was the way things went. Pokemon battled, and they were either the victor or the loser. The way of the world.
As he grew, as he aged, everything got so much more wordy- but still always so simple. There was no reason to mess with the laws governed by the sun and moon, no reason to mess with what Arceus had put into place. He had cooked for the inn's patrons, hummed at their stories, offering no comfort beyond a warm smile. Grief was for family Pokemon, was for family that was human and meant to live out long lives. The hysterical customers were merely given a room key and politely ignored.
When they had gotten Daphne as a young Mudbray, as a calm and smart little thing, his eyes had been wide. A Pokemon all their own, one to belong to them and only them. The laws of the world just couldn't apply to her- she wasn't wild, she was domesticated and sharp and a worthy companion.
"Will you journey out one day, beyond Ula'ula?"
Her words had been even, as level as they always were from when he was a teenager as they sat outside to gaze at the stars in Lunala's wings. A source of wisdom from such a small body- small enough that only his baby sister Olympia could ride her. Florence had just tilted his head towards her, a smile forming on his lips as he leaned against her, eyes still focused on the sky above.
"Don't worry, Daphne. I'll take you with me when I go, when my parents can manage the inn with Olympia to help them." His murmur was airy, full of an unconcerned hum, his visage tilted upwards once more. "I won't let you faint. Won't let you die. You're family."
"Family." The Mudbray seemed wise beyond her years, lidded eyes glancing at him for a moment before they were both back to before. "...I will protect you with all of my might, then, Florence. With the utmost care."
It was settled.
Even when they had started with a sarcastic Litten lounging on Daphne's back as they traversed the first island years later, when he was an adult, his priorities were the same- to protect his family and to finish the island challenge. The first two deaths had been nothing- an unfortunate series of circumstances, but they weren't fit enough to survive. Only the Litten showed any sadness at their deaths. It seemed that Felix carried a soft touch, but it was of no concern.
Two months later, it was an extreme cause for his slight panic- a Salazzle foaming at the mouth with fire, four fainted Pokemon on the ground, an exhausted Mudsdale the only thing between him and a loss. His family member was the only one left that could do anything- all out of Super Potions, his eyes were wide- he couldn't lose a sister, couldn't lose the closest friend he had, his voice was hoarse but-
They left the battle victorious, Daphne poised with calm. Nothing could shake her, not even a near-death experience.
Four bodies of fainted Pokemon were pushed to the edge of the area by the Trial Captain as they left the scene.
A month later, and now they were here. Past Lush Jungle, on their way back to Heahea City, the humid feeling of approaching rain on his skin. Riding on his faithful partner, Florence kept a little tune floating about as they walked down the trodden path, steady and relaxed. There was no reason to go too fast, not when they'd be wanting shelter sometime soon- thankfully his bag was waterproof, though. Rushing to find shelter did nobody any good.
"Hey, where do ya think we should head off to?" His question was lazy, open-ended- he didn't mind too much about where they would end up. Worrying about what would happen only caused problems in the end, and the soft snort Daphne sent him seconds later confirmed that. "No idea," she murmured in her usual tone, even as she moved her head about. It didn't matter that it was in the natural language of wild Pokemon- even if he rarely spoke it, Florence could understand. Daphne had slowly but surely Stomped the knowledge into his memory. "Doesn't matter. Pretty sure I can smell a group up ahead-"
A raindrop splashed on her nose.
"Then-" Another one. The Mudsdale merely sighed and kept going despite the sprinkling starting to pick up in frequency.
"We'll find them easily enough. They're just off the road, maybe five minutes....ten minutes? No. Twelve, fifteen minutes away." She disliked the rain. It wasn't that she would retreat to her Pokeball- it was just...an unpleasant experience. She could live. Daphne was too strong to weaken under the presence of rain.
"There."
Minutes later, Daphne finally stopped. Her stamina had kept her going since Lush Jungle, for perhaps a few hours of a steady pace- on maps it looked like it would take seconds to cross routes, but he didn't mind. None of them minded. It was just them and the land....and another trainer, it seemed. With a curious little sound he released his Vaporeon, Camelia, to enjoy the rain that was starting to pour down and soak his clothes- but not his bag, thankfully enough.
"Rain! Rain! Rain is my most favorite thing ever!" The excited little Eeveelution pranced around on Daphne's back, the moisture soaking into her and giving the Pokemon a healthy looking shine. As the Mudsdale started to verge off course, starting to walk again in the direction that both Daphne and now Florence could sense the presence of a trainer. Light from a cave- perfect to shelter in for the night.
"Alola," he called out in greeting, certainly loud enough to carry into the cave as they approached. "D'you mind if we also shelter in there for the night?" He ignored Camelia's grumblings that they'd be out of the rain and scratched her neck lightly, chuckling as she melted into the touch. The Vaporeon was such a tactile creature- she wasn't a companion, but he was certainly fond of her.
Florence ran a hand through his pink hair when they finally stepped out of the rain, sneezing and trying to displace the water as the Vaporeon that had been with them hopped off to curl up just in the rain. At first glance, he could only blink- a few large Pokemon, huh. At least there was enough room in the cave for him and Daphne to comfortably fit, though.
"Let me get these bags off of you before you go ahead and lay down," the trainer chided softly, managing to take the bags she carried for him off. Eyes darted over to the other trainer before he waved in a second greeting and sat down near the fire, eyeing the Lycanroc closely before turning to the other human.
"Alola, again," he chirped, a wide grin on his face while his clothes slowly dried off. "How're you doing?"
"What he means to say is that we thank you for not forcing us out of this shelter," Daphne said slowly and patiently, nudging Florence in a clear movement. He only laughed- the snickering of a Vaporeon could be heard from outside, though, and that made him sniff.
"I'm perfectly thankful."
"Thank Lunala that I'm not chewing you out right now." Florence rolled his eyes at the sound of the Pokemon language, leaning back against his partner and paying more attention to the other trainer until Daphne gave up and started to really rest.
"So. Having a good night? Finished up the Lush Jungle trial today or yesterday or something?"
