Elias Meinn -
Elias is a pureblood and a Slytherin, but he's not from a loud or renowned pureblood family, nor was his family especially wealthy (though they aren't necessarily poor, either). Elias generally comes off as aloof, distant, and rather cold (stereotypical of a Slytherin), but this is not really his "true" nature, and was an act developed well after coming to Hogwarts as a shield against the disdain with which the other Houses generally treat Slytherins. He is more of a quiet loner, really, and this part of his personality is genuine. He is fiercely protect of his friends and those he cares about, which is part of what started the feud between himself and Florence- the usual story of a Griffindor talking bad about a Slytherin, and Elias got fed up with it and stepped in. The Griffindor (being hot-headed as they often are) didn't take it well, and things escalated, resulting in what practically became a war between their two groups of friends (which included both Florence and Elias). While over time the rest of the students involved eventually got bored, graduated, or generally moved on, Elias and Florence both stubbornly adhered to their disagreement, which by that point had become more of a personal battle of trying to one-up each other than any kind of conflict of ideals.
Physically, Elias stands about 5'9", with pale skin and some freckles, and pale blonde hair cut with an undercut, but with the longest hair coming to about his chin. He has blue-gray eyes with a ring of copper around the center, which more than a few people have found to be almost captivating. He has a narrow build, and is neither especially muscular, nor skinny, nor chubby. He's just firmly middle. He's not unattractive, but he's nothing to gawk at either. Physically, he is all-around quiet average. He keeps with him a massive snake- a hypo albino Burmese python with very pale blue eyes- which he calls Jormungandr. The snake is practically always draped around his shoulders, and if it's not, one can be sure it's lurking nearby. Elias also has a large eagle owl named Raesvelg, which usually perches in his office rather than in the owlery with the majority of Hogwarts' owls. (Aphelyon )
Florence King -
Florence is a muggleborn in a family of five. the youngest of three siblings, with two older sisters, one with magic as well- a gryffindor two years older than him and his oldest sister, five years older than him, a teacher without magic.
comes off as an airy, soft child until provoked, showing a core of steel and well-developed intelligence. fiercely loyal to family and friends, which is how he ended up fighting elias' friend group when his sister and her friends got to fighting the slytherins. even after everyone got bored of it, his values and stubbornness kept him going- even if it was quite silly and petty, now, that he's thought of it.
While his sisters are quite tall, florence stands at a small 5'1". his hair is dyed a light silver, soft and falling in little curls to a few inches above his shoulders. his eyes are a warm hazel, complimenting his slightly darkened skin. some don't recognize that he's an adult- he can certainly hex like one, though, even if he looks like a child. he owns one pet- a little owl that he's named athena that stays in his rooms. many think he has a second pet- but in reality it's his animagus form, a sleek white cat. overall, nobody would see him as a threat or anything other than he appears- a little muggleborn with a penchant for transfiguration and divination. elias and the headmaster/mistress know otherwise, however. (Possibly, though I feel as though some NPCs one person should stick with [at least mostly] to keep it consistent. I mean not for like every little thing, but like any major interactions I feel like the same person should do the same NPCs.
And yeah, I figured it would be something like, everyone's arrived and whatever and Harper calls them to her office and is like "so neither of you are gonna be happy about this"
Alternatively, we could cut NPCs out entirely from the get-go and have them run into each other in a hallway somewhere lmao. Or like, going to dinner or when they arrive or something, idk.)

ooh, running into eachother in a hallway would be nice o; on their way to dinner to talk with all the teachers
and harper sees them walk in together and shes just. "sh oot" and looks dead inside
they could have been setting up their quarters or their classrooms (but elias' would prob be outside for the most part, hmm, prob his living quarters for him) and been like !!! whoops dinner's about to start and rush there and don't see eachother and crash into the other

(( a bit of a shorter starter than i would have liked, but. shrugs. i'm just as tired as u, florence ))
He was absolutely exhausted.
How long had it been since he had a cup of coffee? Tea was good for the soul, but coffee- coffee was where it was at. It ran the world just as well as money did, and helped people get their jobs done.
It was a shame that he didn't have a cup to drink right now, because he was about to hit rock bottom and he had to be at dinner. Dinner with co-workers, which was even crazier.
Florence didn't know how he had gotten the position of the Transfiguration Professor at Hogwarts. It was still almost like a dream- after certification of his Mastery in the subject, everything had snowballed- Headmistress Harper extending the interview even as he was still studying the effects of the rare wizards and witches that had the animagus of a magical animal, frantically pulling everything together after acceptance... Getting his classroom set up had been the final step. He was here. Classes started in just a week and a half. How crazy was that?
He hadn't slept the night before in his excitement to get there and set everything up, which was his first mistake. The silver-haired wizard had been subsisting on coffee so he didn't fall asleep while getting everything ready in his classroom, and his quarters only had the basic furnishings, and- well, it was a recipe for disaster. Pepper-up Potions had proven disastrous while he was studying for the Mastery exam, and coffee was the last resort, and now he was just hoping that he made it to dinner and didn't screw everything up-
Wait. Was he late?
"Tempus," he mumbled faintly while rushing to the Great Hall, cedar and unicorn hair wand swishing with a lazy care- and a curse flew out of his mouth soon after. The panic did more for his sleepiness than coffee would have done, his legs moving faster-
Until he crashed into someone at the intersection of a hallway, a bit too panicked to see whoever it had been in his rush to dinner.
Please, oh please, don't let it be the Headmistress.

(lmao I just see "I'm just as tired as u florence" ..... "he was absolutely exhausted"
edit: also sorry this is a bit long and took a while, I wasn't really entirely sure where I was going with it lmao)
The morning had been rather hectic, as were... pretty much any mornings where Elias tried to do something other than sleep in. Really, he was more of a night owl, but begrudgingly accepted that at least for the duration of the school year he would simply have to be miserable. Still, it paid well, and there was really nothing within his grasp that was more prestigious than teaching at Hogwarts, especially for a wizard as young as he, and so even if he never intended for it to be a permanent arrangement, it would certainly do for a few years. It had been six years since he had graduated from Hogwarts, passing most of his classes well enough, and his OWLS with an E, but neglecting to go on to his NEWTS despite the opportunity to do so (traditional schooling, really, had never been his style). From there, he returned home to Scotland for a year or so to help on his family's ranch, before heading to Iceland to study the native dragon species (which were, surprisingly, not all that well catalogued even in modern times) with his cousin. He had remained there for the past several years, and upon deciding to return to Great Britain was surprised to receive an owl from Headmistress Harper less than a month after his return, inviting him to come teach the Care of Magical Creatures class. Professor Hawthorne had retired the year before, and as it had turned out the teacher she hired to replace him proved to be entirely incompetent, resulting in several fourth-years with unicorn related injuries and a never-ending stream of howlers. Elias had never aspired to a teaching job... he much preferred beasts to humans, but despite himself, he ended up agreeing to, at the very least an interview. And, well, there was really no saying no to Harper.
None of these things were what was on Elias's mind now, as he rushed to settle into his room, or at the very least clean up, before dinner. He had spent most of the day settling his beasts into their new home- a small, rather makeshift "stable" of sorts on the grounds near the forest- as well as some of the smaller ones into their own cages and terrariums in his quarters. He didn't have anything exceptional, really, just some creatures he had convinced his family to part with for the time being- a griffon and a pair of hippogriffs, a kneazle or two, a tank of flesh-eating slugs, and so on. He had just gotten the last of his "pets" in their tanks, fed and watered, and had managed to change clothes when the clocktower chimed for six.
"Damn, I'll be late. Wouldn't be good to be late on the first day, even if it is just dinner," Elias muttered to himself as he quickly finished dressing. "Come on now, Jorumungandr," he called to his snake, which was warming itself in the light of one of the room's large windows. The snake roused itself irritably before climbing up Elias's extended arm and wrapping itself around his shoulders. The 23-year-old took a quick look at himself in the mirror- messy and probably smelled like hay and dead ferrets, but it would have to do- grabbed his wand from his desk, and quickly headed out of the room. His quarters were set off in a rather secluded corridor on the second floor, which suited him just fine- he would hate to have to haul his creatures too far to the classroom (at least those he could demonstrate indoors), and stairs were his mortal enemy. Thus, it was his incredible surprise when he hadn't walked more than 12 feet, rounding a corner and running directly into what he could only assume was the only other person in this part of the castle. Jormungandr tightened around his shoulders to keep its place, while Elias stumbled back a few paces, quickly checking his pocket to make sure his wand hadn't been knocked out or damaged in any way. "Sorry about that, I suppose we're both running late," he apologized quickly without looking up. Aw damn, who did I immediately make a bad impression with this time? he thought, taking perhaps a bit longer than necessary to check his pocket, so as to avoid having to make any kind of eye contact. The person he had run into was quite small, so he assumed a woman, quickly trying to remember what professors he had met who were around the same height.

(( i'm always tired. coffee keeps me going dw!! ))
"I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean to inconvenience you, it's my first day he- Elias?"
As he picked himself up, running a hand anxiously through his hair, his eyes blinked wildly in the direction of his old...rival, he guessed? Why was he there? Maybe it was just something else, but he had said he was running late and did that mean he was a professor too and why hadn't he heard about this yet-
"What in the hell are you doing here?"
Florence wasn't quite sure if he was having a nightmare or not. His old enemy, the one he hadn't thought he would have to encounter after he graduated was right in front of him with a snake on him and this had to be the worst thing that had ever happened to him. Elias was still as annoyingly tall as ever, still with that look on his face that Florence wanted to hex like they were in their third year again, and...
No. He had to be professional, even if it was a Slytherin enemy he had to deal with.
Stay strong, Florence.
"You must be in the wrong part of the world," he said stiffly, wand held tight in his hand and no that's not what he wanted to say at all. Just as before, just as when they were younger the words seemed uncontrollable- and he was a friendly person! Why couldn't he be one with Elias? "Last I heard, you were in Iceland."
They had to be at dinner ten minutes ago. That didn't really stop him from glaring at Elias, a sharp frown on his face. A professional he may be, but with this? All of the smiles went away.
Perhaps he was being childish.
....Perhaps.

Elias balked as he heard the other person speak. What caught him off guard was not the fact that it was male (since he'd assumed it was a woman) but rather the fact that it filled automatically with an unexpected mixture of anger, anxiety, and irritation. He recognized it immediately; even though it had been so long, and he sounded a bit different now, it was so obnoxiously familiar. Immediately, his apologetic demeanor evaporated, his eyes snapping to the other person's face. "Ah," he replied. "You."
Goddammit, he cursed, his thoughts spinning as he considered how he could- and should- react to this. What was Florence King doing here? Surely he didn't teach here? Elias hadn't bothered to keep up with him after they'd graduated, dedicating no more than an occasional, unpleasant thought to his high school nemesis. Elias's aloof expression sharpened into a disdainful frown at Florence's question: "What are you doing here?" He could see Florence's hand tightening around his wand, and instinctively, Elias mirrored the movement. Of course, he had no intention to start dueling the other professor here in the hallway on his first day of work, but still... it was tempting. And if Florence swung, Elias would not hesitate to return the favor.
This thought clouded his mind for a moment, and Elias was unable to formulate an adequate response before Florence spoke again. "You must be in the wrong part of the world. Last I heard, you were in Iceland."
It seemed that the attempt to never think about the other again was not mutual. Though he wasn't normally a fan of making enemies- he wasn't especially confrontational, if he could avoid it- something about their rivalry had always amused it. It was, at times, tedious, stressful, and outright anxiety-inducing. Elias never enjoyed being hurt or humiliated, particularly by a Hufflepuff (his Housemates never let him live those moments down). But still, there was something just so incredibly satisfying in eliciting such a strong response in someone, in seeing how the silver-haired man's face flushed with anger and how he shuffled with discomfort at the confrontation, obviously restraining himself.
"Ah, so you kept up with me then?" Elias replied coyly after a heartbeat, allowing himself a wry grin. His tone was taunting and almost flirtatious. "I would have thought you'd be over me by now."

Florence's mouth twisted into something between a frown and a grimace. If only they had met anywhere else, he wouldn't have hesitated to hex him and apparate away. He hated this situation so much- but Elias brought out the strong reactions in him, something that seemed wrong in a kind and loyal Hufflepuff, something he had never appreciated. The frown grew deeper as he sniffed and looked away, ignoring the angry flush creeping across his visage.
"Well- not my fault someone had to mention it," he muttered, a special sort of venom in his voice.
It was pitiable, how bad he was with any sort of comeback or verbal sparring. He did better with demonstration and action than he did words, and even better with curling up by a fire than taking action against someone, but he couldn't help it, really.
A pause stretched for a long moment, Florence struggling to hold his composure, before his eyes flickered in the direction of where they both were headed. "So you're a teacher too," he grumbled flatly. It wasn't a question- there had been another new professor, Headmistress Harper had told him, and the silver-haired wizard hadn't even hazarded a guess as to who it would be.
A substantial mistake on his part, he supposed.
Between studying, becoming an animagus, and stressing over his life, Elias had filled most of the free time that they had during their school years with their fights and pranks and general rivalry- enough to give most of their teachers permanent headaches. Perhaps the Headmistress had wanted to have them meet during the dinner as to not have a big disturbance?
"We might as well head to dinner," he said with a grimace. At least the students weren't due for another week, Florence thought- even if he wasn't hopeful about the situation. We can settle this and never see each other outside of meals during the school year.

Elias almost had to stop himself from chuckling. He had forgotten how much he enjoyed getting to Florence. "I suppose they must have thought you'd be interested," Elias countered, slipping his wand back in his pocket, though he kept his hand resting next to it as well. He was confident enough that Florence wouldn't do anything here and now... there was no reason to, really, and the stakes were too high. Still, it never hurt to be prepared. With his other hand, he shifted Jormungandr into a more comfortable position on his shoulders- though the snake didn't seem to especially appreciate the disturbance- and then nodded in response to Florence's assumption.
"Yes, care of magical creatures, in case you were wondering," he replied. "What about you.... muggle studies?" The comment wasn't really intended to be a dig at Florence's heritage- Elias didn't care about things like that, so much- but rather that he found the idea of muggle studies to be pointless, boring, and rather silly (after all, all a wizard really had to do was go into the muggle world for a bit and it was easy enough to figure out, at least to some degree). It was only after he said it that he realized how it might be misconstrued. Well, it's too late now, he thought to himself with a grimace. I'll just have to roll with it. Shifting again, he started off in the direction of the Great Hall. "Yes, I'm sure we'll be quite late now," he replied a bit bitterly.

(( rip them ))
"Like I'd be interested in what's happened to a Slytherin that kept trying to hex me throughout school," he hissed, eyes ablaze for just a moment until he settled down, a solid shift in his shoulders. He had to stay calm. Elias couldn't get to him, not while he was like this. His right eye definitely wasn't twitching.
Muggle Studies? Muggle Studies?
"I'll have you know that I'm teaching Transfiguration," he growled, starting after him with a quicker pace just to keep up. "I have a Mastery now, not like you- all you did was lark about with creatures for a few years! You're nothing compared to me!" The venom in his voice was clear, just as the offended tone was- any attempt at cool-headedness was gone, even though he hadn't been a Gryffindor in Hogwarts.
"It's all your fault," Florence hissed under his breath, unsure if Elias could hear him or not. He was absolutely fuming, unlike the composed Slytherin in front of him, unable to keep his emotions on hold. That was what he hated, absolutely hated- couldn't he have stayed away from him for the rest of their lives?
He needed a Calming Potion now. Or the chance to have dinner in his bare living quarters. Anything would be better than bickering with his rival in front of former teachers, his current co-workers.
"You're such a prat," he said with a snarl as they strode into the Great Hall, the startled looks of the staff floating their way as they approached the table. "Can't you be a good person for once?"

"Ah yes, you waved your wand and read books, while I discovered three new species of Arctic dragons," Elias replied, rolling his eyes. "Such a shame that I managed to get myself hired at the most prestigious wizarding school and I didn't even get to take some extra tests." His amusement was waning somewhat now... the ideal point was when the adversary (as Elias generally addressed him as, in his own mind at least) was bothered but still struggling to control himself. They were past that point now, and normally about when the hexing started. Instead, though, Elias took advantage of his longer legs and walked faster, but annoyingly, Florence kept at his heels like a small and very yappy dog.
Elias was a bit surprised at Florence's rather loud comment the moment they entered the Great Hall: "You're such a prat." The smaller man's voice carried surprisingly well in the mostly-empty room, and a few of the other staff members- most of whom were already seated at the teachers' table- looked up in surprise. Of course, it didn't take more than a moment for most of them to recognize precisely who had just walked through the door, and to look thoroughly displeased about it.
"Why can't you be a good person for once?"
Elias let out a snort. "Would it matter to you one way or another? I am a Slytherin after all, isn't that proof enough that I must be evil?" His expression was coy and mocking, but his tone was rather bitter as he raised one eyebrow, hazarding a glance at Florence. Without another word, he approached the table and gave a small, polite bow to Headmaster Harper, who was sitting at the center of the table with an unreadable expression- probably somewhere between horror and curiosity. "Madame Harper," he greeted, now ignoring Florence as if he was no longer there. "I hope the end of your summer was pleasant?" He glanced along the table, looking for his seat, really trying to find any excuse to stop the small, angry Hufflepuff from breathing down his neck.

"You're the one who kept provoking me," he hissed softly, hands shaking ever-so-slightly even as he drew himself up to make himself seem taller in front of the Headmistress, who looked extremely unimpressed. She had been a Slytherin, too, if he remembered correctly- she was wonderful. Elias, though? A prime example of a Slytherin gone wrong.
"It was wonderful," the Headmistress said evenly, eyes passing over to Florence for a short moment before focusing back on Elias. Florence resisted the urge to interrupt, with surprising success. "My niece will be starting her first year here soon. It'll be a pleasure to see her along with the rest of the children."
"Your seat is over there," she said to the shorter wizard, "between Professors Holt and Lee." The dismissal was clear, and the exasperated share she leveled at Elias spoke volumes of her current mood.
"Don't give me any more headaches than I'll already have," she sighed after Florence was out of earshot, absolutely unimpressed with what she saw coming in. "You're next to Professor Graves."
She wasn't paid enough to deal with them.
(( Anything you can think of that'll be done now, or would you like to do a short skip til the end of the meal? Harper would prob want both of them in her office. ))

Elias smiled. "Ah, that's lovely. My youngest brother just graduated last year." He watched as Florence stalk off before turning his attention back to Harper as she spoke, not showing his annoyance at the situation the adversary had created for him. Why couldn't he just stay irrelevant? I didn't do anything.
"Hey, he's the one who got all hot and bothered," Elias replied with a shrug, risking a sideways glance at Florence farther down the table. "I barely even said anything." That much, at least, was true. Still, he couldn't truthfully say that what little he had said hadn't been crafted specifically to egg Florence on. But, of course, he wouldn't tell that to Harper. He cast another glance at Florence before taking the seat that the Headmistress had indicated, trying to push the thought of the Hufflepuff from his mind and instead of focus on all the other stuff he needed to do. He found it rather difficult, especially once the food arrived- the familiarity of the Great Hall just seemed to heighten his instinctual suspicion that someone would charm a glob of gelatin to fly into his ear. Still, the meal passed without incident, and by the end, he had begun to relax somewhat. I can deal with a bit of animosity, he thought determinedly.
(yeah sure)

"Hm." The unimpressed eyes of the Headmistress followed Elias as he sat down before she sighed, sat back, and rubbed at her eyes. "Don't start," she muttered at the professor at her side before starting to eat. "They're as horrible as always."
- - "King, Meinn, to my office."
The order came as most professors were leaving the hall, chatting quietly together and heading back to wherever they needed to be. Harper's gaze caught Florence as he slumped, halted from a discussion with Professor Holt, and she merely smiled at him as he groaned.
"Come along, Elias," she hummed, just a bit softer to her former student that was still at the table.
"I know everything about teaching here," Florence was complaining as she walked up to him- silenced with a raised eyebrow before he started muttering more.
It wasn't his fault that Elias was such a...such a...
"Bloody hell," he murmured under his breath, a pout gracing his features. Right about now his sister would be going 'wizards do not slump over' with a sharp tone but he could care less- this was about their rivalry, wasn't it? Couldn't they just not talk about it and instead duel in abandoned hallways like they had done near the end of their schooling?
Of course not.
After Elias was following closely, the Headmistress started to speak with her usual calm, level tone. "As you two are professors now, I expect you to behave like one. Both of you. Don't egg each other on, don't respond, avoid the other as much as you can, I don't care. Just...don't cause havoc like you did before."
She had to have been speaking about The Incident. A duel in their seventh year. Even if Florence still had been satisfied with it- he had won, after all- none of the teachers had been pleased. At all. Had they really done that much destruction to the hallway?
"He doesn't deserve peace," Florence humphed, narrowing his eyes over at him. Petty he may be, but....
He was still cowed by Harper's silent look. There was no winning that battle.

Elias had spent his meal mostly silent, not bothering to speak with any of the other professors- his former teachers- all that much. He hadn't exactly been a social butterfly, nor an ideal student, while at Hogwarts, and his favorite teachers had since retired or moved on, leaving him instead surrounded by mildly disdainful acquaintances. Which, in his opinion, was probably worse than absolute strangers. He had to prevent himself from letting out an audible sigh at the thought; he'd never really felt entirely at ease here, and really why he'd agree to actually return was beyond him. Of course, had he known that Professor King would be there to snap at his heels every step of the way, well, he certainly would not have. But, it was too late now. He couldn't let the Headmistress down so close to the start of the school year, so he would at least see it through for the time being.
He finished his meal silently, allowing most of the others to leave before he bothered to rise as well. As he heard his name spoken sternly from farther down the table, however, he realized he should have made his escape while he could. He didn't allow his dissatisfaction to show, however, and just nodded obediently to Headmistress Harper. "Yes, of course." Elias got up and followed her, groaning inwardly as she called over Florence as well. I would have been happy to just ignore him and be done with it, he thought, daggers in his glare as he cast an unhappy glance at the silver-haired man. But no, he had to go and draw attention to us. He said none of this, however, even as Florence muttered something under his breath. A snarky comment wasn't worth making such a bad impression with the Headmistress on his first day.
Elias followed the Headmistress silently until she stopped and addressed them both, listening with no visible reaction except, perhaps, the faintest traces of displeasure on his face, as well as a small spark of anger in his eye. Not directed at Harper, of course, but rather at Florence, and at the sheer stupidity of this whole situation. Their feud had been stupid even in school.... why did it have to bother him now? Why did Harper feel as though it was a good idea to invite him to teach in the same year that she hired Florence, especially if now she seemed insistent upon repeatedly scolding them both for something Elias wasn't even eager to take part in? As usual, it was all his fault.
"I have no intentions of going out of my way to cause more bickering," Elias finally replied with a shrug, not gracing Florence with so much as a glare, even after his comment. "As I said before, I've hardly said a word to him, and what I have said... well, it's his fault if he's taken it badly. I'll keep to myself, but I can't and won't take responsibility for his actions." He said the last part with a bit of a huff, as though they were a pair of children accused of stealing from the cookie jar and he was insistent that it was Florence who did it.
